What can you do to the skyrocket to essentially not make it a phone, besides the obvious. Say i buy a new phone and never get rid of the skyrocket(i wouldnt dare leave the skyrocket ) What could you put on it to say JUST make it an media player? No other apps, no home screen. You just turn it on and it will only play music to a customized UI like a microsoft zune(i had when it first came out). Or maybe you just wanted a camera. etc.. Yes, you can delete files that you dont need put it in airplane mode bla blah blah. Thats not what i am looking for.
I don't know if anyone would see use for it besides me, but i wanted to see. I know this could be possible and maybe you can call me crazy.

There's actually no need to give it up as a phone, even if you remove the SIM card. I have two main devices that I alternate between, my Skyrocket and my HTC Vivid. I have GrooveIP installed on both. This app allows you to use a device to make calls over wifi or your cell data network so you do not need a SIM inserted to make calls as long as you have wifi available. This way I can simply put the SIM in whichever device I decide to carry on any given day, and leave the other behind at home to send and receive calls over wifi when I am there. And this way both devices are fully functional with all of their capabilities at all times.
There's no need to cripple either device when you have this option (GrooveIP) available for only a few bucks from the Play Store. Actually my use of GrooveIP goes way deeper than that, as you can easily see by the list of devices in my sig.
With this one app, and possibly one more (TextPlus), you can keep as many phones fully functional that you may so desire.

I realize i can still make use of the functions wifi and other apps to use when i dont have a plan for the skyrocket. That is not what im asking. Im talking about stripping the phone of all phone capabilities. Im saying strictly make it a Media player not like the galaxy players because they have apps i dont want apps.....just a media player. Or one function.
I guess this is a useless question im asking, what do they say dream big or go home?

Yeah i dont think anyone would want to waste time developing something, thats why there are a bunch of projects i read where they tried to make a media player rom and just abandoned them. Do the make a developer pill that you could ingest and build stuff?

If you can figure out a way to register a media player as the default launcher, that would probably be enough, no?
The phone has an OS so do music players. So finding a way to install an OS from a music player on it shouldn't be impossible. It's like stripping a windows machine and then installing linux no? So getting some OS off of an MP3 player and looking at what it needs as far as file structure would be a good place to start. I have two phones and since I've gotten the Rocket my SGS4G has basically become my MP3 player. I get about 12 hours out of it with airplane mode just playing tunes. If I could replace the OS with something dedicated to music and get more time I would make that trade off. Especially if you could still flash back to an Android OS.

Okay so are we talking about porting a OS/ROM from a music player? I wonder who the best Dev to talk to about this is? Im no expert in this subject or else i would have done something by now . If we got more people interested im sure a dev would support it right?
There's actually a ROM project out there for almost this exact concept! I read the OP once here on xda. Let me search for it and see if I can find it. And the idea was exactly this: to take an old phone and flash this ROM to basically turn it into a Zune, so that its main purpose became an mp3 player. Let me look for it...

So far I love the phone. The feel and weight of the phone just seems better then my Captivate(which I gave to my wife). After not getting data on the phone unless I had WiFi on kind of sucked, but if you make a new network. You will be able to gain data back.
The only thing I am not liking is when I set up my HTC sense with Facebook, it put all my friends from facebook into my contacts list in my phone. I do not want all my friends on the list. I have tried and figure out how to delete from the list but cant figure it out. Anyone know how?
I also side loaded a few apps using the SLW program, once you download HTC sync on your computer it was easy.
I cant wait until this phone gets rooted so I can go in and change some stuff around, like ringtones. You can have custom ringtones when the phone is not plugged in to the USB but once you plug the USB in, it reverts back to the stock ringtones because it thinks shuts off your SD Card. Well you know what, I guess I can have the option to only have it charge will plugged in. That might work.
Other then that me loves the phone. Glade my wife had an upgrade so I could get the phone for $79.99 from Costco and a free charger with it. She loves my old Captivate so I was like hell ya ill trade ya!
Ha I love it...got a feeling alot of wives will be getting a captivate tommorow

Also, for those that just want to install apps and leave the phone stock you can go to this thread created by me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943174
The phone feels so polished and the screen is awesome, no Craptivate screen but it will turn heads.

Ok I know what you're saying, and I didn't even realized my phone did that until you just mentioned it. I didn't see a way to get rid of them either.
If this is bothering you because you have to scroll through so many more names to get to the contact you want to dial, have you tried the t9 smart dialer feature? Lets say you want to dial 'John', instead of scrolling all the way down to his name, just spell out his name via t9 (5 for 'j', 6 for 'o', 4 for 'h', etc). The contacts that match what you're typing will appear and you don't have to scroll through all the names. My Evo and other HTC sense phones do this ( stock android doesn't, but you can download other dialers in the market that do). If you already knew this and just don't want the names to appear, can't help you there.

i went to check this out in the store today. a few thoughts
-size is great. i compared it to my nexus one w/seidocase and it is only slightly larger... like less than a .25" larger in width and length
-weight is great. very comparable to n1 w/case
-sense 2.0 looked pretty slick.
-very fast... zero lag.
-my only stickler was the screen. i could see the "grid" dots on the display unit. is this typical of slcd?
Love it already and havent had it 5 hours yet, beats my old htc surround hands down.
This kicks the captivates ass all around, even unrooted with stock rom. Soooo glad I pulled the trigger... nice to have a decent exchange email client as part of the basic package (sorry touchdown, but the integration is a big plus... I hated the separate address books).
The more I use my phone the more I realize everything works and works well.
Have installed pretty much everything there is and it plays or runs them without a hiccup.
Obviously the only apps it will not run are the ones that require root. My plan is to do this very soon so I can take advantage of those as well.
Every single game I've installed is smooth with no lag.
Emulators work with zero issues, my plan is to try the the psx one next.
You can not measure the battery life right away, it has to get used to a few charges first. See the Desire HD forums and they will say the same.
I've made some calls and can say that it sounds great, I've tried both the loudspeaker and the ear speaker and both sound fine to me.
Obviously the small speaker will not be that loud especially at first. Still planning to use DSP Manager to see if it fixes it.
I've still to try out the gps while moving in the vehicle as well.
Build quality is very satisfying and is what's expected from HTC.
Where I had trouble getting 3G I am now getting a constant H+ according to the phone.
What else can I say I made an excellent choice and with the Sideload Wonder Machine, root, radio and custom ROMs there's room to make this phone even better with those options.

I upgraded to the S3 a month or so back so I have a 4 month old S2 that I'm looking for uses for. I have nobody to give it to and don't really need/want to sell it yet, so I've been researching non phone uses for it. Maybe a streaming cam for home security, a media pc (with external storage of course), something along those lines. Any ideas?
One use: you can use it to test out roms and kernels without fear of damaging your only phone. I'm sure it'd help a dev out if they knew that their rom caused issues, and you have a phone to fall back on.
I'd be doing the same but AT&T bought my SR.
Stock ICS on my S3
Make a cell-bot!! ... I'm into robot things.. so it interests me. Then you could use the cell-bot for the home security. (recording.. and put a tazer on it) or make one of these YouTube Link but with the skyrocket interfaced somehow..
I would do it.. but just don't have the time.. I have a first gen Nao robot (from my university) that I code on. Mainly python or C++. Takes too much time lol
Sly's use is a good one too.. could always use people that aren't afraid to load up a fresh build and report non-bias info.
I assume that it will no longer have a sim card so, wifi only. I'm a little strange, I use my SR for about everything but a phone. I do use mine as somewhat of a HTPC at home. I have it on the nightstand connected to tv which has a small surround sound system. From there I use it for: clock, online streaming (hulu+, netflix, youtube, tedtv...etc.) music and movie streaming from main HTPC, downloading music and movies (faster than my home pc on same wifi). I also use Splashtop which controls main HTPC giving me all the functions of my computer.(tv tuner card and recordings web browsing, documents, printer) remotely with video and sound, So simple explaination: It's my Tv, stereo, clock, htpc for my bedroom. Although I have an MK802 that works pretty well, I'm getting the MK802 iii in a few weeks which will do all of this and be remotely controlled from my phone. Oh yeah I use it as a pc remote control also. These are just the home uses.
But, you could also donate it to a good charity. The "davietr" charity foundation. LOL!

This crossed my mind as well, I was going to make a quad-rotor using the s2 as the I/O controller. It has the perfect setup, all the sensors minus a ground proxsinity sensor. Wiring it all up is no problem, the problem lays in my lack or programming knowledge.
I knew I had seen that one in the video somewhere... but couldn't understand what he was saying
http://www.brookstone.com/rover-remote-control-spy-tank-for-ipad
If I had my hands on that one I would tear it apart and put an Arduino in it (personal preference for building bots -- and simple to use)
Wish I knew more about interfacing a phone with this type of hardware application.
I know the cell-bots website has *some* info..

Ive read up on Arduino some time back, looks like lots of people were thinking along the same lines as I. First thing i'd do with that thing is replace the cam with a better one, maybe a servo to enable some movement of the cam, also pull out those motors and put in some brush less higher torque ones. I'd be willing to buy one of those bots (pending some research) and modding it with the s2 as an on-board interface if anybody has any knowledge of programming. I think it would be a good project for the community.

Is there a way to display the phones screen on the tv?

Hmm a bit behind times are we?
Depends on what roms your running for 1.
Ultragen rom has TV out. I tried it, was going to use my phone as a smart TV function to see xbmc movies, and doesn't work for me. Maybe not the right cable.

It works on stock.
Could we get someone with a little knowledge to elaborate on this topic? I've been trying to get tv out my phone for two years. The ONLY rom I've ever been able to get it to work with is Ultragen. I don't like ICS though. Does anyone know of a BML rom in which tv out will work? Does anyone know WHY it matters what rom you have? Or maybe how to change something somewhere to make it function properly? I would LOVE to be able to get it working on Valhalla Final.......
I keep hearing ....its a matter of the right cables....I've purchased several cables at different price ranges...and hooked them up multiple ways and the best I've managed to get is a very distorted partially visible snowy screen with audio.
And that's with every rom.
From what I understood is it works on CM9, but there is a green line when you change the rotation.
Alternatively, if what you want is to display pictures or videos from your gallery on TV
and assuming you have Smart TV hooked up to your router. You could use iMediaShare
app, (or any DLNA capable app in the market) it works wonders, to stream any video
or pictures from your phone (or youtube) to your TV. Without the hassle of cables
and such.
Besides, I used RCA cables before with our phone, and picture quality is (outright) crap.
Thanks all for the input. Smart TV, which I just purchased anyway, is a pretty good option.
My main interest in the feature was the ability to play emulators from my phone on the tv.
I read a post FBis251 wrote about being able to sync your wiimote to your smartphone so you could use it as a controller for your emulators.
Not too big a deal, as I don't travel often, it would just be neat.
Once again, thanks for the input all.

and how? could I, an average American with a little bit of itelligence and common sense, fix it?
I'm by no means trying to take away from what the devs do, it simply amazes me, but there has to be a way of getting the feature to work.
I would not go as far to say the roms are incomplete without the feature, as it wouldn't be used that often, but come on guys, how cool would it be to have a multi platform emulator on the fly!?!?

Nope.
It works on GB. Go back to GB, stay on GB and use TV out.
@lumin30-I'm so sorry man. I just read your post and realized I forgot to thank you for your pm response. My bad my man.
I haven't figured it out on GB. I got it on the Ultragen, which I believe is ICS, so anytime I need the feature I just switch to my Ultragen backup.
Only downside is I haven't figured out how to get back to GB other than Odin, which really isn't a big deal either, just a little inconvient.
Tv out works on ics but has a green bar at bottom of screen in landscape but not in portrait. Here are instructions with pics and a link to a video. Make sure you select NTSC. For some reason default PAL. Also make sure your 3.5mm jack has 4 pins like the one in the pic.

Here is what I am wondering.....
When I had a captivate I saw this ROM :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093696&highlight=captivate+touch
Basically it turns the captivate into an iPod touch in a way. The dev took out the phone basically. It will play videos, music, camera works, wifi etc.
The deal is I have an old Infuse sitting in my desk drawer, my 2 year old like to steal my phone (Note 2) and open the gallery and swipe the pictures back and forth, pinch zoom, knows which one is the video player, and the music player. Well she also knows how to delete stuff apparently LOL. What I would like to do is load the infuse up with pics and princess movies and let her play with it (it has an otterbox) that way if she deletes something I won't be scrambling trying to figure it out when I need it and it's gone
I am trying to avoid her making an emergency call which (if I remember right) a cell will do without a sim card in it.
Are there any Roms out there for the Infuse that are similar, or how hard would it be to port something like this?
Thanks

Thanks

Probably easiest solution is put the phone into airplane mode. Your two year old would have to get it out of that mode and then know 911, enter, etc. There was another post in the forum for a similar request...do a search, there may be other options too.

This works alright but it kills the wifi so I can't add shortcuts to youtube videos what would happen if I rooted and uninstalled the phone and contacts?

You could try but you would probably need to open the ROM and remove the phone.apk and contact.apk from there. My current ROM allows contacts to be disabled and no such option on the phone.
Cool thanks! I may play with it and see what happens. In the meantime I am going to PM the Dev and see if he would mind if I ported (or attempt to anyway LOL)

You can turn WiFi back on after you go into Airplane mode and the cellular radio will still be disabled.
I also saw this thread over at Rootzwiki that might have a solution for you. I haven't used it so try it at your own risk.

Perfect! Stock Infuse, flashed entropy DD, flashed the zip from that thread and it is exactly what I needed! She can still play with the dialer but if she hits call it will force close. Great find and thank you so much!!!

So I have that urge to buy something new and I've stumbled across the sony SW2 in my looking around and I was wondering if this would be worth it to buy? Those of you who have had one for a while, do you think I should get one?
I think it all depends on its use per the individual, it is very handy for me when I'm at work and in a meeting I can see who's calling and read messages etc and also when I'm on my motorbike also saves me having to pull out my phone to see whoa calling messages etc. I would say though if you have a Samsung phone then probably have a look at the gear

If you can get it for less than $150, that's a decent price... However, there's LG's and Moto's watches coming out this summer if you can wait a few months - but those are rumored to be around $250.

If you need a device to remote control your smartphone, then yes you should get it. If you are happy just taking your phone out of your pocket and using it, then you dont need the Sony Smartwatch 2. It is not an indepedent device. It can do almost nothing by itself, it is 99% dependent on your phone.
The best way to describe it is that it is a second screen to your smartphone. To be able to use it you must have your smartphone on you, at all times. It not autonomous working at all.
Hi all,
can this Sony SW2 keep the time by itself if I go running to the park and leave my phone at home? Just keep the time.
I know it would be more useful to take the phone in my pocket and probably try to have an Endomondo's Sports Tracker widget on the smartwatch.. does anyone knows about a good sports tracking app like Endomondo's ?
Thanks.
Sure, why not. It's only money.
I have had mine for 8 months and love it. I had not worn a watch in perhaps 20 years. (I'm a reformed pocket watch user.) If you like to know who is emailing and testing when it happens, covertly, it is great. There are other things it is great at too, but those are the #1 use. I like the color screen v.s. monochrome screens, but battery life suffers. Price is reasonable, relatively speaking, but if you are an Android user and have a little more $$, I'd wait until summer to see what the new Google based watches bring. They appear to be a step up. The only thing I'd wish for is voice transcription to reply to email or text and I believe that's coming in the Google OS watches.

Yes it can. And your SW2 comes with Runtastic, which is pretty okay for me.
Sw1 can keep time only till it has battery or has not been switched off. If you switch it off or battery finishes, you need to connect it again with your phone to get time.

Not on your Nexus it doesnt..... it doesnt have an answer call button, though theres a fix if you are rooted.
Also it has no speaker or mic so youd need a bt headset. Which can already be used to answer calls.

Note that you cannot answer from the watch, in any case, using a galaxy nexus.

Because the calling app that Sony offers to you onli offers the 'answer call' button on Sony phones. Unless you move it to the system partition, which requires root.

LOL It's a fair question, I joined this forum when I have a Qtek 2200 (made by HTC and also known under the brands XDA, O2), and after a Qtek 2020i, and used this forum just to get some informations. When this devices become obsolete I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5830 but I didn't like the Froyo GUI so I change to iOS devices that aren't supported here. But since a few months ago I become tired of it, always the same and without big changes, and planned to switch again to android that had a big improvement since froyo and its know more appealing to use.
One of the thing that I found out immediately was the different ROM's available to install, and I have been playing with them in my devices.
So it's natural that now I had reasons to post, to clear my doughts.
I don't use to write just to make number, I hope that you'll be clear.

I see in the call extension app description that "answer call" is for Xperia Only. I have a rooted HTC One M8, but I did not move the app to the system partition (I doubled checked just to be sure); however, I can answer calls with my Sony Smartwatch 2. Not sure if it is because I am rooted or not, but I wanted to pass along my experience with my phone and the call extension app in question.
Rob
I've found that the lack of a 'Call Accept' button is not a major deal breaker for the Call Extension program. Wired or BT headsets have the action button, so the SW2 is still good. PLUS, with the recent upgrades to the core program, it's perfect to setup for a 'idling watch-face' that contains the pertinent information that I need.
Remember, the watch will allow you to tuck the phone back into the pocket or holster and leave it there. I myself enjoy starting an album as I leave the house to catch my bus for work, then just use the SmartMote Extension to change the song or tweak the volume on the sly.
Oh, and with the phone settings extension I found, I can cut the phone's Wi-Fi when I leave a well, so it doesn't draw extra power looking for a connection - without going fully into the watch apps, because it's latext update puts a shortcut directly into the watch-face itself!
Yeah, I'd recommend getting this watch, if you need a new watch. Once you have it, you find reasons to have it.... (Not the least, because it reduces the need to turn on the phone every five minutes to check it.)
