Opinions on rooting HTC One X. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I am exchanging my 3.18 One X for a 2.20. I am very excited to root and learn and hopefully not brick too much.
What are your opinions on rooting and experiences with the HTC One X?
Has it been a fun time full of enjoyable learning and sweet ROM's? What are your favorite ROM's and why?

You won't regret it. Best experience ever.
You will get mad.... And disappointed.... but it's so worth it.
-Sugardaddy Duncan

Unless you're impatient you'll like rooting... Take it slow and don't brick your phone.
Not allowed to post what your favorite ROMs are really... Mine is in my signature.

If you have to ask then maybe it's best you don't.
Not insulting you, but inexperienced users are just generally...annoying, especially if they don't read and immediately call for help. Before you decide, go read the rooting thread's instructions. Then read the comments about people who have had problems. Ask yourself if you could solve problems like this if it came down to it. If you decide you want to, go for it!

just root the phone

This. However, on one hand he did go so far to exchange his phone for one that was rootable. Perhaps he read something before hand. Hell maybe he'll even continue this trend.

Yes I have done quite a bit of reading. Unlocking the boot loader is new to me since I used to have an Infuse. I must have flashed it 30 or so times over my two year contract. My Mom and I got our Infuses at the same time, but what puzzled me was that no matter which ROMs I used over the course of my two year contract, her stock phone always seemed to be faster and more responsive, lol. To this day two years later she's still rocking the stock Froyo Infuse and it's running superbly.
I am one of those jack of all trades types that can follow instructions well, but never have a crystal clear understanding of what's really happening under the hood. Coding and development interest me and are fascinating, but I am not passionate about it by any means. The guides and tools that people come up with like Hasoon2000's tool are really great, and allow thousands more people who would never dare try and unlock their boot loaders a fighting chance.
I don't really know where I'm going with this, but yeah... this is a cool forum for sure. I've been silently observing it for a few years.

I'm not allowed to say my favorites, but I can tell you by experience the official CM10.1 nightlies have been VERY solid lately. Combine that with a few other tweaks (radio, kernel), getting the settings perfect and just getting to know android (I came from an iPhone 3GS that was waaay past its due date), I'm just in love with this phone.
Unlocking the bootloader wasn't even an annoyance to me; until I started lurking here more I thought it was just standard procedure for rooting phones. Even though rooting it, flashing ROMs and achieving S-Off for the first time was a huge headache, im glad I did it. This phone FLYS.

You ever heard of that song, "I GOT THE POWER!"? That is exactly how you will fell. Go for it. Different ROMs have different taste. Some people still prefer sense, while others like the ones based off of CM. Everything in my SIG you should be able to achieve as I have 2.20 also

Do it - that's why you bought an android phone anyway right?
The devs here have some great roms and as long as you read up enough you won't stuff phone. Enjoy.

[Q] Anybody Running HTC Sense ROM?

Hey guys,
New user here (and a CS major), so I know a little bit about what rooting and flashing is, however have NEVER done it, so implementation wise, I'm very naive about how to do it, and I definitely don't want to mess my phone up. My first Android device was purchased in November of last year with the MyTouch 4G. Made a great decision. Decided to upgrade to a G2X just recently, got it in Friday, purchased the docks for it today (which yes, I am slightly disappointed with)....but I miss the HTC Sense ROM.
Basically I'm wondering if the HTC Sense ROM is smoother and if anybody is using it on the phone yet. Any feedback would be great. Thanks guys!
Also, is there any way to change what the "hard" buttons on the front are set to do? If I rooted it could I change what these buttons did. I'd like to use the 'genius' button that HTC has on their MyTouch 4G instead of search.
I've also read through some of the threads about rooting and flashing to a new ROM. Basically is there anything I should know being a newbie when it comes to flashing and changing the ROM on it? Any hints or tips?
Thanks again!
There are no roms for the G2x yet.
This includes steps for Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050534
Once you have root access, you can go into the Market and download "Rom Manager".
This will download and install a custom Recovery Console which allows flashing.
Again, the phone is so new, there are no available Roms available at this time. We do have Root and Recovery which is 2/3 the way there.
Again, so I'm a little new to this whole rooting stuff, so there is no HTC Sense that will work with this phone because I have found some downloads, but I'm just not sure if they would work.
Again, I'm new here, so I don't know if this is one of those things I will have to wait a while for or what...any idea based on past phones?

I also love HTC Sense. It's the only thing I miss about the MyTouch 4g. I'm not sure which ROMS you are referring to, but there are no ROMS available for our phone yet, including Sense ROMS. I'd be very careful about flashing anything until you're comfortable with the steps, and lingo.
Got the G2X last week, upgraded from a virgin G1. I am also new to the root world. I have been browsing around the site here for the last couple of days. There is a wealth of information here, but it is a little overwhelming... Is there a thread/sticky/website that goes over the basics for a beginner. I apoligize in advance for being a newb.....
Thanks,
Mike

I actually work for T-Mobile, I feel pretty comfortable with what I'm doing, and have no qualms about flashing but I will be careful as always about it. Yeah, I REALLY miss the messaging portion and genius button of the mytouch. Would love to get those two options back....
Also about my second question, when flashed does it change the outter "hard" buttons too? For instance instead of search could I use the search button as a genius button?

In time I think there will more guides/stickies. Unfortunately for you guys, I think the majority of the people that bought a G2x came from previous phones that they were flashing, rooting, and modding. You're in the right spot. XDA is definitely the best place to learn.

so far, there's a hack to map the search button to the camera app. it works great. and the same button snaps pics if you like.
I hate HTC sense, and every other android skin for that matter, although certain tidbits of TouchWiz are nice. You won't find sense on the g2x anytime soon, it's designed for HTC phones specifically, so porting it to a different brand would be very difficult and tedious.

Nice job not being an ass *blinks*, I HAVE read the stickies, and spent the past hour or so looking through threads, just looking for a little clarification. I didn't realize that there were different ROM for different Phones. (Thought it might be like Windows to PCs, doesn't matter on the manufacturer of the PC, you can install windows on it as long as it meets bottom end reqs) If I had understood that, I wouldn't have asked the question.
And don't act like I'm not Tech savvy. I fix computers as a side job, I'm a developer and about to graduate with a Computer Science degree from a good nationally certified university. But I haven't worked in phone development at all, so this stuff is something I'm learning about. Again, I was just asking a few questions, don't get your panties in a wad.
You wont see a sense rom anytime soon, this isnt a htc device. Return the phone and wait for the htc sensation

Yea I don't think we'll see a Sense rom but anything can happen. Usually people with Sense and the Genius button go the other way (want a dedicated search and pure android)
The good thing is Sense can be replicated to a certain degree using themed launchers. There are even iPhone themed launchers. I use Launcher Pro because they have several special widgets that function and behave much like some of the Sense variants. The recent release of Launcher Pro has added themes to the mix, and are already lots of "Sense" themed Launcher Pro widgets and dock styles.
As far as the Genius button, I've never used it. I DO know that the Search key is awesome and allows searching in most apps. Also you should download "Google Voice Search" (not Google Voice, that is Visual Voicemail) and map it to a long press of the search button. Then you can just press and hold and say, "map pizza" or "call mom" or "text girlfriend hey I'm running late. see you in 30 minutes."
Hey!
Sense is not impossible, but you're probably not going to see it for a looong time if it does ever happen. HTC's software mantra is "lock-and key"-- only HTC branded phones have the correct permissions/drivers/guts in general to flash Sense ROMs. I've been waiting for one on the Vibrant since release. They got one booting, but it's far from stable and the whole project has been abandoned due to difficulty.
I second the "read, read, read" theme. Go to the vibrant or atrix or nexus s forum for example. (any comparable smart/superphone will do). Read THOSE stickies/posts/comments in alllll the sections. You have to get a feel for the lingo around here. This website comes complete with its own independent subculture. Which is unfortunately titled "geek".
I would say the most important part to learning however, is trying... and then totally ****ing it up and freaking out aaaand, since you don't want to have a $200 brick on your hands, you are forced by circumstance to learn :] As a word of encouragement, I've been from vibrant to nexus one and back and I find that even with all the ass-backwards stuff I did the first time I tried making/flashing zips/unlocking bootloaders/using fastboot for the first time etc., it's actually pretty damn hard to brick a phone beyond repair if you have half a brain.
CS major eh? Went to carnegie mellon myself. The place was full of them :] Being that the g2x has no ROMs, you're a cs major and you're most likely monetarily bound to an open source phone os for the next 2 years, why not download the android sdk and start cookin' up some ROMs yourself??? I've been told by people who do it that it's not that hard to learn. Carpe Diem my friend.
Any questions? PM me. The community around here used to be really really cool and helpful and informative. Now it kind of sucks :/

Hello all,
I have had my HTC Inspire 4G for a few days now. I am completely new to smart phones but have figured my way around using apps, the internet and changing my screen's wallpaper.
I see that the phone comes with tons of useless apps that I want to get rid of and I heard about "rooting" my phone.
Whats is rooting anyway? What are the pros and cons?
How can you trust the person that made the root program etc
also are there any useful websites I should know of? is this the premier android forum? are there any others out there
It sounds like you oughtta do some googlin'. There are a number of guides and articles that you can read over that will answer your initial questions. Try this one:
http://www.androidcentral.com/what-rooting
Probably the two most important things you need to know are: search for answers to your questions before you ask them publicly, and follow directions to the letter. After that, things will go pretty smoothly for you.
Perhaps you overlooked the stickied guide in this general section of the forum?
Guide to rooting and flashing by user Mudknot2005.

In a nutshell, "root" is the superuser of a unix system. Like Administrator on windows, only even more powerful. The phone runs a linux OS so at the core it is unix-like. "rooting" can mean a lot of things, but basically, it is getting sufficient privileges on your phone to be able to read/write whatever you want and from there, change how the phone behaves.
If you do decide to root i suggest using bubbys one click. I know it reads scary, but its actually very easy. There is even a vid linked to it to show you better. Good luck!

If you're that concerned about it, I don't recommend rooting your phone.
FWIW, I do malware cleanup/puter repair as a side gig and I haven't come across anything on here that wasn't legit.
Use the Ace Hack Kit and follow the instructions to a T. If you hit a bump in the road, search first then ask if you cannot find a definitive or concise resolution for your issue.
Anyone who is new to smartphones (or just android period) i don't recommend you rooting your phone..
I say learn about it some more. watch some videos, read some threads, then read them again.. and again.. to it sticks in your head..
then i suggest you should root.. it sucks to see thread saying "help i bricked my phone!"

+1 I Second that. I'd like root my phone, but since I'm in no hurry, I'm on here reading and learning about it. I'll prolly root after December if AT&T doesn't let me utilize my upgrade to the newest HTC device they have then, as I paid for this via off contract pricing. I had heard from Desire HD owners, that it is tricky to root given HTC's signed bootloaders. Hence the, what looks to a noob, as an overwhelming and potentially complicated process. Like the others have said just read all you can about it, and when your ready to take the plunge, follow the instructions word for word, and you shouldn't have any problems.

In reply to you, as well as in general, to the OP...
Well, I paid off contract as well, waited before rooting, not because I was scared of "bricking" my phone or because I didn't "trust these people" because it might "be a virus," I wanted to get familiar with how the phone operates in an unmodified state -- to get a baseline.
Really, it's not that big of a deal to root. You aren't going to brick your phone. The only true bricks (will not even power up) that I've heard of happened with some people who ran a certain function within a certain version of clockwork recovery that had a bad bug.
Everything else is a "soft brick," meaning it looks scary, but it's actually fixable.

I think people should see what the stock ROM experience is like for about a month or so before rooting and flashing another ROM, especially if this is your first Android phone.

Just lost a great dev.

Scott had locked both of his threads thanks to a few xda members who had problems, and decided to take it out on him.
I think those people who blamed him should apologize, instead of being selfish and ruining for us all.

I'm amazed at how some people can act like little children.
I never used any of Scott's work before but I've heard he turned out some pretty kickass stuff.
*sigh* People will never learn.
When people ignore mods telling them to knock it off, you know it's not going to end well.
Maybe a timeout for a day or two will let cooler heads prevail in the end.
I understand, if I was in Scott's position I would probably do the same. I just thinks it's funny how things clearly say what to do, and someone still messes it up.
I just sucks that people have to take it so far as to blame the dev for not doing something. When it for one flashing any thing has always been at your own risk, and two getting pissed off, and posting a nasty thread instead of just asking for help politely.

I'm pretty sure he is on his rom forums, maybe, just maybe if those people apologize, and we all ask nicely he may come back.
His work is great, I mean the s3 forums are donating to get him a phone. That alone should say something.
Now we are down to, we'll one sense rom that is kept up. And our aosp roms which can't progress much more without source.

This totally blows. His roms were great and that's all I rocked since the very beginning. I can't blame him at all. Hopefully within time maybe he can return. There are plenty of people that are greatful for his time and work.

I agree... Ban them, god I hope Scott comes back, one of the only reasons to keep this phone. I was worried and stated that this could happen, I saw it in the Vivid thread.
I hope he reads this and realizes that there are way more that appreciate his work more then complain about it. If he did leave I can't say I blame him, just hope it doesn't happen

So I have a few choice words that I think this entire forum should read, but its mainly directed to whomever was talking crap about Scott. And I don't know who it was. And I apologize for the occasional profanity, but its stuff like this that really hits home for me.
As developers, we try to enhance the user experience of our phones for the good of the community. We don't get anything out of developing besides the occasional donation that someone gives us since they like our work. We aren't forced to do the work that we do. I can turn around right now and cease all development on the two ROMs I do (AOKP and Evervolv) for this phone. But I don't. Want to know why? Because of all the people in the threads saying "Wow, this ROM is awesome! Thanks Rohan!" and "This made my phone really awesome! Thanks!". If I didn't have those people then I wouldn't feel like updating the ROM. Even if you aren't using my ROMs and you drop in to say "This looks awesome, though I will wait for more stability!" That feels good too since you know someone still liked your work.
When you have someone calling you "selfish" and "annoying" it gets to you. When you put your work out, you want it to be the best. When it isn't the best, you try to make it the best. Thats why I and every other developer on XDA update and fix bugs. We want the ROM to be the best it can be. Thats why I stay up regularly till 2 AM looking up new Android features and the Platform Guide on the android developer site. I want to become a better developer for the community. Not for myself, but for the community. When you have someone degrading yourself, you feel like ****. And when you don't feel good about your work, you feel like the community is not enjoying your work. At that point it becomes a "why bother even updating this" sort of thing.
So when someone is being an asshat in the forums against you, it hurts. If you think that putting these ROMs out benefits us, the developers in any way besides the infrequent donation, you are sorely mistaken. We put these ROMs out for the community. I enjoy making ROMs for the community because I like to see all of the "Great job!" posts in my thread. It vindicates my work and proves me right that I can indeed make a ROM people like. Sure, the donations are an added plus and they help as well.
And now onto the "selfish" part of that statement. Are. you. effing. kidding. me. Seriously? You call us selfish. After staying up late hours to get a ROM out for YOU, you turn around and call us selfish? I dont even know what to say to that statement. We are not "selfish." You think putting our name onto a ROM is the best prize in the world? Why the flying f*** would we need that? So that people know my name? Are you effing kidding me?
So whomever it was, GTFO. The work that we do as developers benefits nobody but the people of these forums. We, the developers help make XDA how great it is. If you don't want to deal with developers, please, go back to stock. We don't need you to run our ROMs.
And to the rest of you, thank you for showing your support. Its a sad day when someone as nice as Scott is lost due to a few spoilt brats in the forums. And please, if you are using a custom ROM and you are enjoying it, tell your developer that you like it. Tell them that this phone became better because of their work. I promise you that we read the posts when we have time. And whenever we do it makes us feel a bit more warm and fuzzy inside.

He's amazing, and makes an amazing ROM and you should all be ashamed of yourselves for driving him away. I swear to god, I hate what xda has become. there are only a select few that put in any hard work for the rest to reap the benefits of, and there are always a sh!t ton of brats who think that they paid for these ROMs when they paid for their phones. It doesn't work that way, you sniveling little d!ckheads. These devs don't work for the manufacturers, the carriers, or xda- they do it FOR FREE, FOR US, because they kick ass, and they deserve nothing but respect from ALL OF US. Seriously, I am issuing a blanket F*CK YOU to every douche on xda who ever talked sh!t to or about any dev here.
I am going to go through his threads and anyone I see talking any sh!t to or about Scott is from here on out permanently banned from receiving ANY of my case giveaways.
Gunny, kleeman, rohan, or any of the other forum regulars that I interact with on a regular basis, if you would be so kind as to help point out who the offenders are it would be greatly appreciated.

Sad thing is like at least 4 people had the same issue, and it's all from lack of reading.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Scott state a long time ago like cleanrom 2.1 days that CWM caused issues? And Scott also said he loved CWM and hated to switch from it?

Yep, back when the SD card wiping issues first started happening he told everyone not to use CWM and to use TWRP instead. Buuuut people don't want to do any actual reading so it becomes Scott's fault for not showing up at their doorstep and holding their hand for them when they flash his ROMs, cross the street, take a piss, what have you. Bottom line is if you flash, you assume ALL risk. It's your own damn fault for not reading. Even if you're flashing an updated version of the ROM you've been running for months, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS read the entire OP for changelog, flash instructions, etc. The moron in question said that it's because his xda app didn't put the warning in red but bottom line is it was still there. Had he READ THE ENTIRE OP, he would have seen the warning whether it was red, green, blue or purple with pink polka dots. His own damn fault, and at this point I'm glad his phone got eff'd up. Serves him right.

can someone from toronto soup up my rogers one x?

Hi I just tried to unlock bootloader on htcdev.com on my Rogers htc one x; and got confused not even half way through; despite majoring in computer science at university.
I know, I know, I am a shame to the internetz.
Can anyone install a custom rom for me in the Toronto area?
I will bring with me either a 6 pack beer or 3 tall cans, your pick.
However if you try to lure me into a sketchy alleyway or I feel that you are up to no good, I will have to call it off and run away.
So yea, if you are willing to install a custom rom for me for some beer, then please do.
** or if you could let me know if there's an easier way to unlock bootloader, I could probably do it myself!
Wont get any easier than this

I wouldn't pay somebody to put a ROM on your phone, or you'll have to pay somebody every time you want to update it. You aren't going to want to sick with the same ROM for the next 2 years. Spend some time reading the forum and follow the instructions and you should be fine.
Where in Toronto are you? If you're close enough, I'll do it for fun. Shoot me a pm, I'll teach you too on the process.

Agree to the previous responses. Just start reading, and figure out the process. We all had to fumble through as n00bs and learn from scratch. Any knowledge you gain will not only help any future mods on this phone, but also on any phones you get in the future. You don't want to have to get people to root every phone you buy.
I understand that the process and terminology can be intimidating for a beginner. But its really not that hard once you put in some time and effort. If you were smart enough to be computer science major, you can certainly handle it. It just takes some reading, and being able to follow instructions carefully.
It's probably like the whole "riding a bike" thing. Once you know, you know forever. It's just a matter of muddling through on our own that first time out, with all the inherent risks of bricking and public shame - OR recruiting some local talent to show you the ropes the first time out. Like dad jogging next to you after he took your training wheels off.
So with all that, I thought about asking this same question in Long Island NY. But the only ROM I'd really consider would be CleanROM based on 2.20 - but there's that pesky linkify issue and the tethering problems I've read about. So I guess I don't need the assist.
Unless someone's giving a Nandroid 101 seminar nearby...
The most confusing part for me when unlocking from htcdev was using android SDK. I'm a big noob like you too man, I didn't know anything about it when I got my phone 2 weeks ago and spent atleast a week reading stuff before I even tried anything.
Maybe try youtube-ing some android SDK videos to get an idea how it works.

Htc one x att variant ROMS

After looking there are a lot of ROM's for the 1xl and others but not a lot for the att variant htc one x. Just wanting someone to point me in the direction of some stable builds of jellybean.

Currently there is no AT&T build of Jellybean available. However, the AT&T One X and the international One XL are the same phone, so you can use those ROMs.
One XL = AT&T One X. Same hardware, same ROMs. As long as its a ROM for the dual core Snapdragon version of the One X/XL (not the quad core Tegra3 version), you can flash it.
As indicated in Turge's thread/survey in the link above, over 60% of the users here are AT&T users. So many/most of the ROMs will at least have AT&T in mind.

I would advise sticking to XDA, and this section of the forum (AT&T One X) specifically. Other websites are not well organized, refer to the Tegra3 One X more often than ours, and can get you in a lot of trouble (as flashing a ROM for the Tegra3 version may brick your device). Stick to this forum, and you'll be safe.
This is really the place to be, after all.

I have found many roms for the xl that is what i found if i had known that the xl and x att variant are the same. I wouldnt of posted at all that is the problem with making 5 variants of the same phone. I had been with ios since the 3g up until the 4s i traded it in for a skyrocket. I tried as many roms as I could with it until, while flashing i had the back off from pulling the battery out to get into recovery and during the flash i dropped it and the battery came out. Lesson learned so instead of paying the 45 to jtag it i still have it as a paper weight but the htc is completely different. I have since installed the viperxl 3.1.0 its great i love modding my phone having something a little different from everyone else i doubt me getting a little butt hurt will stop me. Sorry for getting a little outraged. But after searching a couple of sites i got a little frustrated. And normally i stick to xda for my info and roms. it is by far the best

Just to reiterate, just stick to XDA and save yourself a headache. Most other websites just steal content from XDA, anyway. So you really aren't gaining anything by looking at random websites.
And I've even made a list of all the ROMs with links here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
