So I see a bunch of folks around xda mentioning, even recommending applanet.
i`m certainly not opposed to free but I just cant figure out why they want permission to access to log in credentials when installing the app.
Would anyone smarter then me like to give their two cents on this?

hmmm. I don't remember it asking me for credentials....I got the apk and installed it, and it launched......maybe it used my stored credentials? hmmm. I did not give it too much thought as I have 2 google accounts. 1 for junk and another more serious. They could hack the junk one all they want.

Lemme clarify. When you install the app. The permissions page pops up telling you applanet wants (among other things) permission to access your account credentials.
Very few apps I have seen need this level of access.

Just buy apps!
Pirating will stop/stall development for the best and new apps in the android market. Support them, this will give you more pleasure with your tablet in the end.

Agreed ... baring in mind that there are apps on the Market that require really suspicious permissions as well, regardless of whether they are free or not. It's probably worse with APKTor, which is not designed towards secured downloads

I support many developers by buying apps. I didn't start this thread to be lectured by you.

As in - when you install an app from the market, it tells you what it's going to access on your phone and asks for your OK. He's asking why an app would want access to your credential information portion of the phone (as opposed to just SD Card Contents, etc). He hasn't said ANYTHING about trying to pirate apps!
BTW, I've never seen one ask for that.

By that you mean what? That people opposed to pirating apps shouldnt read threads by people that do?
Im also opposed to pirating. Yeah, if the app is free and you cant get it, then ask the dev for the apk, but knowingly taking a paid app without giving a donation or any recognition to the dev is wrong.

Having said that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and since the awkwardness of the apPlanet apk changed my mind about installing it I don't even see a need to continue those thread.
BTW. Some apps are ridiculously expensive and I still don't see a reason to pay upwards of $20 dollars to a group of investors just to find i still can't edit word documents.

There is a big difference in "circumventing software limitations imposed by others" on a device you have bought and own and blatant pirating of apps

So, everyone on xda has no morals? Im sorry, but thats a ridiculous statement. People on here mod free apps, or they will mod paid if you have proof youve paid for the app. No roms have paid apps in them unless theyre put in by mistake and then theyre taken out.
And yeah, there are ridiculously priced apps (navigation for £40 - £80) but people do buy them.

Applanet is a warez source - this site has a very strict policy *against* warez, which is probably why the "hacking" aspect of it is tolerated.
There's one other thread on XDA concerning Applanet and it got shutdown immediately.
BTW. Some apps are ridiculously expensive and I still don't see a reason to pay upwards of $20 dollars to a group of investors just to find i still can't edit word documents.

That still doesn't make stealing an application right though does it? Don't forget that you have 24 hours from making your Market purchases to uninstall and get a refund if it doesn't suit your needs.

I though this subject was not about pirating but more about why an app asks for some rights.
btw applanet is not only for pirating it also provides free apps unavailable on the market.
in addition it seems to not providing anything anymore the last past days....

There's supposedly a new release coming soon, and they're fixing the server end of it as well.
I think what it boils down to is if you're uncomfortable with the permissions an app is requesting, then don't install it. Better safe than sorry right?

We don't do warez here. XDA is about getting the most from your device, not about screwing people over.

rooted finally, now i have a few Adfree issues?

Wondering if anyone else is having this problem. A few apps seem to get a bit screwy after using adfree. One of the main ones is Words with Friends. It loads up and goes to a full screen error.
Any way to set exceptions for certain apps, or should I just deal with the ads?

I had to pick ad free or words with friends on my dinc ...sucks there is a big ad that tries to load there for some reason only when you have ad free...

The game and adfree worked fine on my Due. I have adfree on my TB, but not the game.

Sorry for the wrong section. Figured due to it requiring root and being caused by an app not working with another this would work.
Never had the issue with my DX so I was confused. Guess I'll get rid of adfree for now.

I don't see how this can be...
The original version is in the Android market, and lists an XDA forum thread as the authors homepage.
It had a bug with the way it worked with one app, and was fixed by someone locally, who didn't try to pretend it was theirs, or anything other than a fixed version.
How would it count as warez?

Worked for me as well. I don't mind the ads in Words free. I had them on my DX with AdFree running as well. Thanks again.

The problem with Ad Free (or any ad blocker) and Words With Friends is not unique to the Thunderbolt. Same issue on my Nexus S.
You can get past it by opening the app, and VERY VERY QUICKLY hitting an existing game to open it. You'll bypass the first ugly ad and be able to play the game. If you aren't fast enough the first time, hit the back button to exit, and then reload and try the game.
Works for me on both Thunderbolt and Nexus S.
edit: I don't usually mind ads, but it's apps like Words w/Friends that drive me to ad blockers. Ads that are intrusive, non-relevant, and obnoxious turn me off. Words violates all of those, even going so far as to start video ads without my okay. I understand devs and companies need to generate revenus, so I always buy a pro version of an app if it's available; I don't expect stuff for free, but I won't put up with intrusive ads either. Does Words have a paid model? I haven't seen it.

Apps that remove adds take away from devs revenue. If they had an app without adds, they would charge for it. If you posted that it would be warez since it would be taking away from dev revenue. Taking out the adds does the same thing, thus making it warez.

I'm pretty sure they pay for putting the ads there not for every add that shows up... So that screws up you explanation

[Poll] Ads on Apk's

Do you find adverts in applications troublesome or not? Or do you think it depends on the application, and how big, and where the advert is placed?

The ad-issue hardly depends on placing. But as an android developer myself i see ads as a good thing. This way i can provide free-users a full and unrestricted app and can still drive income.
For example check out my Darts app, do you think the ads are too obstrusive? Atleast i havent had a single user complain. Also barely anyone buys the ad-free version.

Getting a free app with an ad instead of paying is fine with me, unless it gets in the way, which it rarely does.

I don't mind ads as long as they don't get day way. Like if I was playing words wit that friends nd the he she said any. And the ad gits in they way. Like no Mr. No no no no no.

What's the deal with Go Launcher? Malicious?

Over the past week I've seen people on here and people on other sites say that Go Launcher has malicious code in it and that it steals your data to sell. Me and my mum have both been using it for about a year now. Why would Google let it stay in the market and how could it be one of the most popular launchers if it's malicous?
Is there really something wrong with it?

What is it with everyone hating on ads! I mean seriously! If you hate ads or think they are dangerous which they are not, then be willing purchase an app...which 99% of you will not obviously...that's why ads exist. Whats the difference between an ad on a website and an app? Nothing. Both come from the same place.

jp idk if they do or not but it seems funny.
Just be thankful you have little square ads you can ignore and not 30 sec videos with no skip button after 5 secs like youtube and draw w/friends.
Those things have a way to really get me mad.

Ads are ok. Im happy that push ads are going to be extinct though. Banner ads don't really bother me.

I stopped using Go Launcher because it was running services for apps/Go Plugins I didn't install. That was the final straw, really. I found that it became really bloated and overly complex. The Go Launcher team are introducing too many functions IMHO and not focusing on what they do best: making an excellent, flexible launcher. I do miss it in some ways. You won't find as much flexibility for free...

These kinda threads always make me laugh. If you want privacy, lock yourself in your house and never go outside, never go online, never use your phone, send a "trusted" person to buy your groceries.
What are they gonna do? Sneak in, steal the hot pics your gf sent you on whatsapp? Attempt a home invasion and rob you of your playboys? Or heaven forbid, forward the hot pics your mistress sent to your mom and your wife/gf.
So what if they serve ads? Dont like it, use another app. These developers need to earn a living too, they use a model that provides you with FREE software for your phone, to use at your discretion. Go Launcher is by far the best launcher out there, it kicks the pants off anything that comes at a price too. If you dont like ads, dont use themes which push ads. Its that simple. Or use an app like adfree
Threads like this hurt the OSS/FS community. The privacy issue is actually pretty moot since most users sign up for forums and trial software and gladly hand over personal information. If you silly enough to keep your bank account details on your phone (which you going to hand out via using your credit/debit card at your local convience store anyway, where for all you know al queida has planted sleeper agents) then you deserve to have your wife see what you and your mistress get up to

Go launcher is the best launcher, if there are ads, please support the developer. Tell me one thing that you could do with any other launcher that you cant with go. This ad method is least intrusive, must be encouraged as means for developers to permit core functionalities free

Yeah, exactly, the crappy notification spam comes from themes via AirPush. Nice to see some antimalware apps start detecting this crap. I have nothing against banners, spamming notification bar is completely different though. On the Go apps note, Go Keyboard free has exactly this kind of annoying spam.

Advertising blockers

As some may (or may not) know, Google has removed a number of this type of app from the Play Store citing violation of some arcane clause of Play Stores T's & C's. Can anybody shed any light on the real reason for this. I can't personally see a problem with using an ad blocker. The devs are still doing what they have to by putting ads in their apps.....still fulfilling their obligations. By using an ad blocker, I'm exercising my personal choice/right to NOT have to view them.....in the same way that I could choose to watch a TV station that doesn't broadcast ads over one that does......where's the problem with that? Is it just me, or does anybody else think that Google is wrong for doing this?

yep i think google are out of order for stopping these add blockers as i was useing and now my phone is full of rubbish adds again !!! boo to you google .....

I use one too....updated my ROM but did a full wipe first....so it got deleted. Tried to re download it from play store and it had gone.....without any warning/explanation.
Did a Google search for it (no irony there then lol) and found an alternative DL source for it....so, luckily for me, I'm not being bombarded with loan offers and other s**t like that......

I'm not sure, but it may be for ethical reasons. Blocking ads, preventing developers receiving their deserved income.

Not sure how blocking an ad will prevent developers from getting paid......surely their money comes from paid/donate versions of their apps......can Google turn around to a dev and say "X's phone is running an ad blocker and as a result doesn't see the ads that you included in your app.....therefore we aren't going to pay you" I'd be surprised if Google had that apple big brother capability to be honest......Android isn't as 'locked down' as that.....on the contrary.....we all know it's as open as it's possible to get.......
And if you're suggesting that sales linked directly to ad exposure will suffer if people can't see the adverts......
My reply to that is.......how many Android users who encounter those adverts see them as anything other than an annoyance.....are an appreciable number of them/us REALLY going to go out and buy the product as a result of seeing an advert on a phone.....I wouldn't think so......
One last point.......
How can the advertisers even begin to estimate how much revenue is generated (or lost) through phone 'spamming'.......I'm sure they wouldn't decrease or withhold payment to a dev because a percentage of phone users use ad blockers......how would they ever find out........

Apps with ads in them bring in revenue for the developer. Why else do you think they would they be there?
Some are paid per click, some are pay per view. So if you are blocking ads, you'll never click on, or view one, so the developer will never get paid from ads on your device.

With respect, before I rooted my phone, when I encountered these ads on a daily/hourly basis, I NEVER clicked them anyway.....and I'm sure I'm not the only one.....in fact, I'd be prepared to suggest that only a tiny minority of phone users actually do click on them........
And I will ALWAYS choose (and have chosen) the pro/paid/donate option for an app if I think that the app merits it....or if I want the added functionality that the paid version offers......so it's not as if I'm saying that the dev doesn't deserve to be paid, because I will choose to pay him for his app if needs be.....

I think this is Googles try to keep Android attractive as a platform for developers! Why would you develop for a platform where everybody is using a adblocker therefore you can't make any money of it?
I'am using AdAway myself. You can still get it from a non official maket!

If I had to guess, google must have gotten so much grief from devs and big companies that use ads that they had to remove these apps from the play store... =/

Google has to negotiate contracts to determine the amount of compensation for ads. By taking away ad blockers, they are able raise the price of advertisement costs (or keep it the same if advertisers are trying to lower it due to ad blockers). More revenue from ads mean more revenue to Google AND the developers.
Also, why are you guys even on XDA if you think the only place to download an app is the Play Store? Probably those same people that say flash doesn't work on Jellybean...

It's hard enough to make any revenue as a Android developer. Since Google decided to release the market without the payment option in the beginning, nowdays Android phone users still don't wan't to pay for apps.

Most of them requires, but there is one which doesn't require mandatory root such as Ad Block Plus I guess.
