Over the past week I've seen people on here and people on other sites say that Go Launcher has malicious code in it and that it steals your data to sell. Me and my mum have both been using it for about a year now. Why would Google let it stay in the market and how could it be one of the most popular launchers if it's malicous?
Is there really something wrong with it?
No, it just started embracing ads since it's free :\

No..
But they added ads which might be dangerous for your phone.
I haven't noticed any ads.... Where exactly have they placed them?
What about this AppCenter and GameZone they added?!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's specific third-party themes that are including ads, not Go Launcher itself.

That would make more sense.
What is it with everyone hating on ads! I mean seriously! If you hate ads or think they are dangerous which they are not, then be willing purchase an app...which 99% of you will not obviously...that's why ads exist. Whats the difference between an ad on a website and an app? Nothing. Both come from the same place.
Oh no an ad! How dare they try to earn from a free app!

^^ They Have ADS TOO!!
jp idk if they do or not but it seems funny.
Just be thankful you have little square ads you can ignore and not 30 sec videos with no skip button after 5 secs like youtube and draw w/friends.
Those things have a way to really get me mad.
Ads are ok. Im happy that push ads are going to be extinct though. Banner ads don't really bother me.

I stopped using Go Launcher because it was running services for apps/Go Plugins I didn't install. That was the final straw, really. I found that it became really bloated and overly complex. The Go Launcher team are introducing too many functions IMHO and not focusing on what they do best: making an excellent, flexible launcher. I do miss it in some ways. You won't find as much flexibility for free...
These kinda threads always make me laugh. If you want privacy, lock yourself in your house and never go outside, never go online, never use your phone, send a "trusted" person to buy your groceries.
What are they gonna do? Sneak in, steal the hot pics your gf sent you on whatsapp? Attempt a home invasion and rob you of your playboys? Or heaven forbid, forward the hot pics your mistress sent to your mom and your wife/gf.
So what if they serve ads? Dont like it, use another app. These developers need to earn a living too, they use a model that provides you with FREE software for your phone, to use at your discretion. Go Launcher is by far the best launcher out there, it kicks the pants off anything that comes at a price too. If you dont like ads, dont use themes which push ads. Its that simple. Or use an app like adfree
Threads like this hurt the OSS/FS community. The privacy issue is actually pretty moot since most users sign up for forums and trial software and gladly hand over personal information. If you silly enough to keep your bank account details on your phone (which you going to hand out via using your credit/debit card at your local convience store anyway, where for all you know al queida has planted sleeper agents) then you deserve to have your wife see what you and your mistress get up to
Go launcher is the best launcher, if there are ads, please support the developer. Tell me one thing that you could do with any other launcher that you cant with go. This ad method is least intrusive, must be encouraged as means for developers to permit core functionalities free
The ads are from themes not from go launcher..

Yeah, exactly, the crappy notification spam comes from themes via AirPush. Nice to see some antimalware apps start detecting this crap. I have nothing against banners, spamming notification bar is completely different though. On the Go apps note, Go Keyboard free has exactly this kind of annoying spam.

Im serious. Its getting to the point I won't even browse the market anymore because there will be 50 in a row from the same damn developer. Its like google dont care enough to fix it.

Haha totally agree with you! The Android market is a complete mess. As much as I love android, the apps are terrible compared to the Apple app store. My roommates iPhone 4 just kills it with all the Badass apps and games.
Sent from my EVO from the Apple Store.
Man those are great apps? I mean we don't have a browser or an app to view porn or pictures like that. With out these apps how would we survive? I only use the market to get ideas for downloading apps then report the dumb "spam" apps
It's weird that we dont have more going in the quality of our apps..
Theres a huge community behind android!
Google's lax policies are bringing things down a bit though!
I think we should be able to spam those apps with an easy long press and tap!
That way the market would almost take care of itself..
i have to admit... i made a wallpaper app but not one like that.. Basically it is called "Theme Park Wallpaper" Its personal pictures of about 7 different florida theme parks like disney, universal etc..
I do add more photos all the time.
I dont think my app is spam but I agree with the OP that I do not even look at the market daily anymore due to all those other wallpaper apps.
? Where do you even find those on the market? Live wallpapers take up most of the top spots in the Themes section. IMHO most of the apps worth installing (Quality apps) take up the top spots in the market anyway.
Still I agree Google needs to take a broom & sweep that crap out. How fast do they get rid of Spam Apps once they are reported? Anyone know?
Well can all group up & police it (. Yeah I said "police it", big whoop, wanna fight about it? >;(
Sadly the app creator is just going to make things worse
..
Agreed. But how would Google lay claim to 100,000 apps w/o all the soundboards and live wallpapers?

Wondering if anyone else is having this problem. A few apps seem to get a bit screwy after using adfree. One of the main ones is Words with Friends. It loads up and goes to a full screen error.
Any way to set exceptions for certain apps, or should I just deal with the ads?
I had to pick ad free or words with friends on my dinc ...sucks there is a big ad that tries to load there for some reason only when you have ad free...
Yes words with friends does not work with adfree...it sucks

They need adds to create revenue, so they try to make it as difficullt to block them as possible. Also, this hould be in Q&A/General section.

Apps like that are considered warez at XDA, and will be removed and acted upon as such.

Sorry for the wrong section. Figured due to it requiring root and being caused by an app not working with another this would work.

I don't see how this can be...
The original version is in the Android market, and lists an XDA forum thread as the authors homepage.
It had a bug with the way it worked with one app, and was fixed by someone locally, who didn't try to pretend it was theirs, or anything other than a fixed version.
How would it count as warez?

Worked for me as well. I don't mind the ads in Words free. I had them on my DX with AdFree running as well. Thanks again.
The problem with Ad Free (or any ad blocker) and Words With Friends is not unique to the Thunderbolt. Same issue on my Nexus S.
You can get past it by opening the app, and VERY VERY QUICKLY hitting an existing game to open it. You'll bypass the first ugly ad and be able to play the game. If you aren't fast enough the first time, hit the back button to exit, and then reload and try the game.
Works for me on both Thunderbolt and Nexus S.
edit: I don't usually mind ads, but it's apps like Words w/Friends that drive me to ad blockers. Ads that are intrusive, non-relevant, and obnoxious turn me off. Words violates all of those, even going so far as to start video ads without my okay. I understand devs and companies need to generate revenus, so I always buy a pro version of an app if it's available; I don't expect stuff for free, but I won't put up with intrusive ads either. Does Words have a paid model? I haven't seen it.
Apps that remove adds take away from devs revenue. If they had an app without adds, they would charge for it. If you posted that it would be warez since it would be taking away from dev revenue. Taking out the adds does the same thing, thus making it warez.

Do you find adverts in applications troublesome or not? Or do you think it depends on the application, and how big, and where the advert is placed?
The ad-issue hardly depends on placing. But as an android developer myself i see ads as a good thing. This way i can provide free-users a full and unrestricted app and can still drive income.
For example check out my Darts app, do you think the ads are too obstrusive? Atleast i havent had a single user complain. Also barely anyone buys the ad-free version.
market.android.com/details?id=com.cdroid.darts
Getting a free app with an ad instead of paying is fine with me, unless it gets in the way, which it rarely does.
I don't mind ads as long as they don't get day way. Like if I was playing words wit that friends nd the he she said any. And the ad gits in they way. Like no Mr. No no no no no.
Not proud to say it but....I use ad block >_<

I guess if they are out of the way, then it's ok. But I would much rather pay for an app straight up and be done with it
I read this just now and gave it a good thought!!
Google Removes All Ad Blocking Apps From Play Store
The thing that comes to my mind is this:
As the article says that ads are truly the means of rvenue for sites and apps, ad blockers should not be encouraged. Now as xda is a community of developers, should we too adhere to the above Google Rules and ban Ad Blockers..!!!??
Food for Thought!!
Please let me know your opinions unless this thread is closed by xda..!!
Not that I want to see ads on my phone, but XDA should adhere to this change as Android is owned by Google.

Good news for devs. Doesn't matter to me cuz I would rather have ads on the apps/games than paying for it.
As I know, only a few percent of android users are using ads blockers. So I think it doesn't matter for developers.
Well it should be an option

I've had ads drastically reduce the usability in some apps and simply deleted said apps and installed alternatives. Other times i do not mind. When an ad completely covers the app i am using and i either have to click on it to make it disappear and open a web browser or find the microscopic X that ends up opening my web browser anyways it is annoying . Now if it only a small banner centered on my screen at the bottom with my screen in vertical or even horizontal mode i dont mind at all. It is not too distracting, usually out of the way of functions etc. It is only when it hampers the user should ads be blockable thats just my 2 cents. Don't mind supporting so long as it is not a nuisance. And some ads i do click on because "oh hey i was looking for something like that" XD

That indeed is theft. Such a pointless thread, and such a pointless question. I hope you can reflect on your thoughts that devs put allot of time to publish their work and you guys take advantage of this.
Imagine someone came to your house, forged your car key and drove off. You run to them and go. What are you doing. The person stealing your car can say "I love doing this, I do it all the time, I just can't quit". That would suck wouldn't it.

You are a bad and evil person for even asking such questions. Jk jk.
I'm against stealing apps....but I may be even more against developers that try to milk their clientele for as much money as possible via in-app purchases. Charge a fair flat rate for a game and get rid of the annoying advertisements bugging people to make in-app purchases. Personally, I will never pay for any sort of in-app purchase but have no problem paying a few bucks for a quality app that doesn't have ads and doesn't prevent you from using the app properly if you don't continuously make in-app purchases.
That's my two cents.
What the hell man. No. There is no penalty... It is against the privacy act to find out where people live from Ip addresses. So there will be no real life penalty. But btw, I've seen my friend use it (he stopped). Btw u get insta-banned from play store until u turn it off. If Google catches u UR google account will be terminated/disabled. Still you should stop
