My review of the TF700 and its usability as a Laptop replacement. - Asus Transformer TF700

I love my TF700 and have customized it so that it perfectly serves my productivity needs. Read here if you are on the fence about replaing your laptop, buying the TF700 or want to see how I get the most out of mine (ROM, Apps, Case).
Edit: Some people are suspicious that I'm sending traffic to my site. I honestly just like having the ability to design and arrange my pictures and writing. I tried posting the whole review into this post and XDA said that my edit had been flagged. Probably because I have a bunch of links to stuff (like the case and such) and am a junior member. Anyway, I don't make any money off of my site, I just like sharing. Sorry if I've offended anyone.

I find it a little suspicious that you are trying to drive everyone to your website instead of posting your review here.

Nice review, and really nice case.

Sorry.

Sorry, that's not my intention. I like having all the pictures and don't know how to host them on the forum or arrange them in a post. I don't make any money off the site I just share stuff there. If this is not cool for the forum rules I'd be happy to take the link down and try to move it over into a post.

I don't see a need for any apology my friend.
Welcome to the TF700T forums!
Stay awhile!
* BB code is here if you haven't found that already.

This is actually nice thread. I don't use Office stuff often but it's nice to have Polaris preinstalled. I work mainly with Latex, so what I need for productivity is DroidEdit and RefMaster. Well, probably it's kinda "not for everyone" thing.

As Thats OK, I bid you welcome to our forums -- lthough I've seen more posts from your hand already.
Linking to external stuff is not exactly new on XDA -- we have TechxZero in here with his external reviews on CROMI and other stuff, while on the SGS2 forums every self-conscious ROM seems to have its own external website. You'll have to visit there to see the changelog, otherwise you wouldn't even know what you'd be flashing on your phone. Luckily, the relevant website would be the only place to get to the download link anyway.
I understand Bonez' point of view as well, for more often than not the aim is indeed to make money off of a visitor's presence, but you solved it nicely. Next time mention the external character in your post beforehand, and just state that it's a no-revenue site. You should be fine.
Now, I'm off to read up a bit.

One under-emphasised aspect of the PC replacement ability of the Infinity is remote desktop apps. Chances are you also have a PC or Windows laptop somewhere. On top of the native productivity apps, you can get some real horsepower w/ a remote desktop session.
Jump Desktop is the best of the best from my extensive testing. Splashtop is probably second. I use both to connect to my home Windows 7 laptop and my Enterprise Win 7 desktops at work. Throw in a wireless mouse and you are definitely set up for leaving Windows at home...
Full screen apps round out the effect by using all of the screen real estate

Of course! I got it from this woman's Etsy store: http://www.etsy.com/listing/113138846/ipad-mini-leather-case-ipad-mini-wool?
Just contact her through etsy and specify that you'd like the wool sleeve made for the TF700 with keyboard dock .. a custom job she did for me already. She doesn't charge extra for custom jobs only needs the dimensions, but because she already made one for me she probably still has the measurements. If not I could try and dig up the measurements I sent her.

Couldn't agree more about Jump Desktop and a wireless mouse. Actually, I prefer a bluetooth mouse over a 2.4Ghz wireless mouse as there is no dongle needed for bluetooth.
Combine that with the keyboard dock, an Android phone and a tethering option and you have the best of all worlds! Can be productive anywhere, anytime!
Also, co-worker of mine gave me a Microsoft Arc mouse, which is really slick - it "folds" flat, so I slide that in my slip case (which I use to transport my TF700+dock) - if I'm not my my desk (where I have a bluetooth mouse), I can use the Microsoft Arc mouse - ultimate portability!

Asus Transformer Prime, Penta-Core ICS Tablet

Asus Transformer 2 (Prime) was just confirmed an hour ago, didn't see any posts about it in General so decided to throw one up myself.
Comes with Nvidia's Quad-core, or Penta-core depending on how you look at it, processor, most likely Ice Cream Sandwich if not Honeycomb with an upgrade by the end of the year. It's also thinner than both the Ipad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 at only 8.3mm with a Micro-SD card slot and Mini-HDMI excluding the ports that will eventually come on the keyboard dock.
Can't post links since I don't have eight posts yet, so if you want to find more info just google Transformer Prime and I'm sure you'll get a lot more information.
kal-el chips, finally!
this thing is a bit too shiny, but i can ignore that for how epicly thin it looks, the raw power, and how great its going to be to use (taken from the transformer 1)
always wanted a transformer, maybe i can obtain one of these.

The Tegra 3 chip uses four 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 cores, in addition to another Cortex-A9 made on a low-power process, that runs at 500MHz. When the tablet is doing mundane things like checking emails, it drops onto the low-power core to save power.
It is logically a quad-core chip, but it will switch to a single low-power core whenever possible to save power.
Put windows 8 on it and I'll buy 10

I'm glad you hate Android so much. If you didn't, you'd probably beat your wife.
No, if I buy a tablet I want a full desktop, or at least laptop experience out of it. You seem to like to make everything out to look as though I'm the bad guy and troll me even when I'm paying something a compliment. That said, I wouldn't buy an iPad, or another android tab. They're mobile OSes and I want a desktop OS for my tab.

Someone brings up the topic of a brand new Android tablet, and your response is "if it had [my favorite software-maker's OS] on it, I'd buy 10." How, exactly, is that a compliment?
Oh, right, 'cause you're a troll!
That statement was actually in relation to the razr thread, however the hardware of this looks outstanding and I'd love to see it run a desktop OS. Asus announced some new 2012 windows 8 tablets though and I'm sure at least one will use a similar chassis so no worries. If I own a tablet computer I want it to be a small computer, not a big phone.

Oh, well gosh darn. I assumed you were talking about, you know, the topic of this thread—and not some random, unrelated phone. Silly me.
Well, I suppose I missed the line about domestic abuse in the original post. Please sir, practice what you preach. Do not knock a thread off topic and then proceed to insult someone else for doing so. While we're on such a kick, please do not insult my English, I am not originally from an English speaking nation. However, looking at your posts, I could provide you with tutoring. There is no reason to turn every thread that I post in to a jumbled mess, your insistence on doing so is based on a ban you received that was not by my report.
As far as the tablet goes, it's outstanding hardware, I just don't see any current mobile OS replacing my laptop. Android is, however, getting closer and closer. Build a decent version of WINE on there and I may just pick one up.

This isn't a topic about whether or not tablets are technologically equivalent at handling the tasks of a laptop, as we could all agree they are not. (Again, I'm the one being off topic?) But I certainly agree with you. I'd like tablets to be more like laptops than phones, but (back to on topic...) the introduction of quad-core chips in tablets is certainly the right direction for accomplishing this.
To be quite honest, I don't see the core count as anything outstanding. I mean the only issue we really have with tossing these into phones is size constraints. Tablets get much larger. What's really going to matter is how they make use of such power. Without some crysis quality games, what is the point in all those cores?
lmao I've never seen a thread derailed so quickly.
You guys are badass. Keep it up!!

Looking at the dimension (thickness) of the TP, IMO it will not work.
There definitely is a new Prime dock. Nobody but ASUS knows for sure yet if the TF101 dock will work with the Prime, but smart money is betting that they're not compatible.

Although I Don't have TF... yet....I do recall reading when the TF1 first came out they did an interview or asked Asus the question and they said that the Dock is future proof and will be compatible with future TF products
http://www.anandtech.com/Show/Index...0&page=9&slug=asus-eee-pad-transformer-review
"...ASUS tells me that the Transformer dock will be compatible with all Transformer branded tablets in the future."
Make of it what you will
The Verge or Engadget (can't remember which) said due to dimensions, the dock won't be backwards compatible
There was a review in a Brazilian blog today which definitely said that the current dock would not work on the Prime. I don't expect items to be future proof, but I am a bit upset at Asus since they definitely said the old dock would work with newer models. I've pretty much decided to see what Windows 8 brings to tablets, Android tablets have been a bit of a let down so far.
I don't agree that ASUS "definitely said" the TF101 dock would work with future devices. In fact, I'd love to see a link where they said that. The most I can remember is one reviewer saying that someone at ASUS told them this, but I've never seen that verified anywhere else.
i've read it (french news site), its definitely not compatible..
So the new Tf is not compatable with the old dock?
It is NOT compatible.

How is it hearsay. You clearly don't know Anand's reputation in the tech world. It's clear in this case ASUS clearly lied to him.
AnandTech is the site that mainstream tech media like Engadget and Verge and BGR quote to explain technology beyond their understanding.
I don't know how much clearer you want than "ASUS tells me that the Transformer dock will be compatible with all Transformer branded tablets in the future."
There's not a hint of uncertainty or hearsay.
It is indeed hearsay. Anand had no proof or commitment to the statement from Asus. The definition of the word hearsay is quite simple.

Here's the definition of hearsay (from dictionary.com):
1. unverified, unofficial information gained or acquired from another and not part of one's direct knowledge: I pay no attention to hearsay.
2. an item of idle or unverified information or gossip; rumor: a malicious hearsay.
So, yes, AnandTech stating that some unidentified person at ASUS said the dock would be compatible with future versions is the very definition of hearsay. ASUS themselves making the statement that the dock would be compatible would NOT be hearsay.

Android Piracy - Real numbers

Hi
few days ago i have released my game on android. I have spend almost a year on development.
There are two option available lite and full ( paid ) full - with full content, and lite with truncated content. Implemented market licensing library. And two separate analytics to track lite and full version separately.
After an hour from release there was first payment, and of course user canceled within 15 minutes transaction.
After 3 hours - i have noticed that google is indexing illegal APKs . What the **** !
They tells that are for developers , and in other side they indexing pirated content ;/
So far there were total 7 full purchases in 3 days
So here is analytics from full version ( from 3 days )

There is a lot of piracy on android, its very easy to find pirated apps and there's only one solution I could think of although not sure it is a perfect solution.
That would be to have the app check for licence validation and if none found over a long period of say a month have the app refuse to run until it can check with google but it might annoy a lot of potential users.

hi tajniacki
I think that you are little bit on lost position. I think thats why some devs release only free apps with advertisements inside - but this have also some disadvantages:
I had app for kid - about learning letters. - After some realease dev add ads inside app thats ok for me - but how can i explain 2yo kid to not click on color bars that appear on bottom of screen?
^ haha good point. I think developers will have to go the extra mile in android. I think devs should use some type of Internet based verification (this would actually be a really good startup idea i think). Similar to windows except nothing works if the app is unable to connect to the internet every so often.

As Blizzard ? Keep most of the stuff on remote servers and play only after logging in ? It will be very hard for small devs , and startup idea is good
Everything can be cracked but this is madness :0 A lot of companies tried to have better DRM protection without luck. So we are on the lost position which is very sad.

That's a big problem for people like myself who live in areas where they can't always get reception for a licence check or who don't have a data connection.
I bought a panorama camera app then found it only works when connected to internet....bit pointless if you are trying to take pic of a place that has no reception though.

It is sad. Especially for small developers that spend tons of time and don't necessarily have the resources to implement insane drm and licensing/validation structures.
I think like much pirated content, we just have to hope there are enough decent people still willing to pay for things. And realize not every pirated copy is a lost sale. Pretty lame that they are readily indexing that stuff, but I'm guessing it'd be hard not to.
I'd hate to add up how much I spend on apps. I've probably only refunded a couple times when I felt the app wasn't what I needed or if I already had a competing paid app I felt was still stronger.
Good luck!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Yes, it would be expensive and impractical for small devs. But on the flipside, only the more expensive apps are readily available as pirated copies.
Im not saying u need Internet every time. But u will need internet for installation and u will need it like every other time u use the app. Obviously not the way to go for many types of apps.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using XDA
Wow, I knew Android piracy was bad, but I didn't realise it was that bad. The worst part is that whatever DRM or whatever you add, they'll crack it in days Tools like apktool or apk-manager or whatever, while designed to create mods and themes etc. for apps, make it all to easy to reverse engineer apps. Sucks, but I guess that's "how it is"
EDIT: It's not hard to see why many devs turn to putting ads in their apps and releasing for free.
I think the best way to look at piracy as a content creator is to look at the people that illegaly download your content as a group that isn't a part of your potential customers. These people always justify their ways by saying they "wouldn't buy it anyway". But then if you wouldn't buy it anyway, why the hell do you want to pirate it?
It sucks but that's the way it is! I think you should just try and look at the positive side that your work was that good that it got pirated

That's easy to say, but when 7 out of ~3000 customers are paying, it's not so practical any more.
Most pirates are the younger generation, imagine, they have no options for paying the app, therefore they become pirates and unfortunately they stick to it.
If there were young people-friendly payment methods then maybe 15-30% more would pay.
So this is the sad reality we're living in.
Sent from my HTC Optimus Ray S
To be honest, most piracy occurs with apps the user would not purchase but if they can get it for free they would try it. I am not defending the act I do not pirate and have only purchased 4 apps. It is a catch 22, I do not want to waste money on crap, and the developer deserves their due for there efforts. If piracy did not exist, I guess my point is that you would not have nearly the number of downloads

This is very true, as a young teenager I had no choice, as I had no income source, no cc to validate when I did get money, and it just stuck. Only recently have I realized that it's not a good practice. I still pirate all of my media initially, but many things I buy, especially if the dev or artist is struggling or new (Sarah donner and her music) or if the product is absolutely amazing (minecraft, the binding of isaac)

Maybe put a version of your app out there with a few features disabled but use adverts in it and perhaps it would earn more income as people will click ads at some point and each click is money you might not have from the app if only selling one version?

You guys are forgetting about adblock on android. But yes, I have pirated some apps, but if I like it, I'll support the developer. If the Dev gets no money, that means no app.
You can easily filter the illegal downloads with email address verification. Very effective and low cost.
App: Public Key + Email Address
Server: Private Key + Verification Algorithm
This is extremely sad, and I think we need to set a fire under Google to do something about it. The problem is it is hard to do anything without closing the system, which would be to much like apple (evil)! So here is an idea; when someone is sideloading an app, the installer checks the market, and if it finds that is a paid app, it refuses to install it! Only problem would be with things like the amazon app store, where they both have the same app. They could at least make the app produce a sort of license before it installs. I know nothing of drm, so don't listen to me if this is dumb.

Wow, I would never expect it to be that bad for a phone.

[Q] Windows installing on Note 10.1

Hello I am new in the forum and I would like to know can I install windows 7 or 8 in Samsung Note 10.1
PLEASE HELP
You will be able to install Windows 8 on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 -- when you see a pig fly. So, keep your eyes peeled. And, let us know when you see it!
If you wanted windows why didn't you wait for the windows tablets?
At this time you can't install windows(any version except maybe 95) on an Android tablet. You need drivers that we just don't have...
Windows 8 is a closed source operating system thus it will be very hard to get it working as we do not have the drivers

Yes apply for MS licence $175000 per unit .
Though i can let you have MS licence for $800 no questions asked .

you can access your desktop/laptop windows installation through a remote desktop app like splashtop remote desktop, which works pretty well. but yeah, no way to install windows directly on the tablet.
Remote desktops are very slugish though. Cant play a movie through it with out it being choppy. To you devs? Is there a remote desktop app using udp protocol? Or a mixture of udp and tcp like dns can? I think it may be the windowing that is making it choppy

This is your lucky day fella, I've ported windows 9 for you.
Wow, all of you have managed to act like the arse end of an ass. Not every person is tech savy. I seem to read so many threads where some innocent guy asks a question and 10 or 12 people just cant resist the urge to get in a dig. I wonder if you realize your not making the person who asked the question seem silly but rather making yourselves look like adolescent dorks with a nerdon. Sometimes it's ok to let a silly question go by you know.
Further more just what is so silly about his question in the first place. It is more than possible to port windows 8 RT to any device though it would be very much less than legal however any research done by windows will come across this and the 1000 threads like it and perhaps eventually lead microsoft into allowing the porting to certain devices if there were enough demand. Yes thats rather unlikely but it could happen though nothing ever happens without there being a question asked first. And what is wrong with wanting more as well. I like my tablet very much however I certainly wouldn't mind being able to duel boot windows. Yes there are some units that do this if one is interested but this is the device that we have chosen to purchase and by being here are we all not trying to make it better? So who could deny that duel booting would not make it better. Can it be done atm, no. Will it be done in the future? Probably not on this machine. Should people who are interested in such things ask if its possible? Absolutely. Without demand there will be no supply.
pc= windows. tablet: android. enough said, end of story!
as i wouldnt like a pc with android, the same goes to tablet with windows.
Without being a jerk like others, of course no, some simple reasons no dvd drive, usb drive, and really no way to port over a completely new os that is kept very private. And doing this would be a risk to any developer that tries.

I'm with you on these people behaving like idiots. Whilst there appears to be little chance of Windows on a Samsung Exynos4 device, it is not impossible to port Windows between platforms. See work done by Dark Forces Team (DFT) with Windows Phone 7 and a very limited Windows 8 on the HTC phones. Unfortunately there are enough easier targets that not many people will focus on such a hard task.

Though I found your post to be less distasteful than some I think you must feel guilt as you found it necessary to try to defend jackass like behavior. Gee I apologize. Not. There is no need to treat people with anything less than the dignity they deserve, unless your a child who hasn't yet learned to treat others as you would like to be treated. If you dont find a problem in the general attitude in this thread then im sorry to say you need a life lesson.

I was looking into this windows 8 on my galaxy note as well. Just because I don't have much faith in the PC world anymore and I always come to this site for the correct answers to my thoughts.
Keep seeing YouTube videos of people doing it on all sorts of tabs.
But YouTube is full of prank videos mainly.
I'm not A+ certified but I figure most aren't so I don't understand all the bad comments. Pretty sure this forum was founded for questions like this. It's not a dumb question to ask.
But trolls will be trolls I guess ....

Attn RDs: Win a CuBox from Solid-Run

Want to get started developing for these cool Android Stick Computers? Let us know your idea, and you are automatically entered for a chance to win one of three CuBox units, thanks to the kind generosity of Solid-Run!
Note: This contest is open to Recognized Developers who live in the US and UK only. Winners will be selected by myself and Elite Recognized Developer AdamOutler. More details will follow in the associated XDA Portal post, so be sure to check out www.xda-developers.com .
Good luck to all who enter!
Edit: Contest is now live! http://www.xda-developers.com/android/win-a-cubox-from-solid-run/
Aww.. I'm selecting? I was going to enter and offer to develop a way to brick one seeing as how their website says they're Unbrickable for developers.. Sounds like a challenge. Someone else do this for me
I would consider toying with XBMC, linux, android or whatever i can toy with on it and look at trying to do an AOSP/Cyanogenmod build on it if its possible. Its very low powered, but appears to have some kernel source available. Is it feasible to be done? no idea. Would have to take a shot at it to find out.
Thanks,
-h8rift
EDIT: Just re-read Adam's note...yeah i'm sure i'll brick it along the way and let you know how it goes, hehe.
I just got the acceptance letter for RD a couple days ago (proof, I'm also sure a member of the developer committee could confirm this), but it's not set on my profile yet.
What I'd like to try with the box is getting an interface set up on it to use it as a car stereo with a touchscreen mounted in the dashboard. I've set up a similar system with an old netbook I have, but power requirements for the netbook raise some issues, mainly with draining my car battery. A lightweight ARM system could largely mitigate, if not completely solve this issue.
There are also space issues. I would like something that I can mount to the back of an LCD and have in a contained easy-to-remove unit, instead of having to run power and VGA cords through my dash.
I also would like to use it as a system for managing my door locks, with a USB keypad possibly stuck in the back of my truck bed, where I can enter a pin and have it lock/unlock my doors. I would also like to try to use a fingerprint scanner to unlock the doors.
Here's some pictures of what I have now:
Picture 1
Picture 2
Picture 3
Picture 4 Don't worry, I've cleaned the wiring since then
Picture 5 XBMC with a modified Xeebo skin. This is the best media player I've found for the job. I was using Winamp at first, but XBMC has cool visualizations and whatnot.
Picture 6 Closer up, I've since filled in that top metal bar with a sharpie
Picture 7 Cleaner wiring, though still a bit messy. Note that my truck is old enough that I don't have a passenger airbag.
Not shown: I've got an acutator in the driver-side door, and a circuit that I built to accept TTL-level voltages and trigger it (essentially two relays making an H bridge, powered by two transistors that get set high by the TTL input. Both relays are ground open and charged closed, so I can set either one high and control the actuator)
Edit: Just to note, I had previously designed this to work with a RPi, but I found it a bit lackluster and not fast enough for what I wanted. Not to mention it inexplicably died one day.
Hello everybody!
First I need to say, that I'm from Hungary, not from US or UK, but I'm really interested in this, so I give it a try. (I can pay for shipping if required.)
Android is my favourite OS, so I would like to make CyanogenMod configuration for this device first. When it's ready I would like to play with linux too and developing ROM's with ubuntu. I have access to the xda build server, so it will be a good pair for the developing.
I wanted to buy an RPi a long time ago, but I didn't have enough money to buy it. If I get one of three CuBox now, i won't betray XDA. All my development for/with this device will be public here.
Thank you for your attention!
atis112
PS: Unbrickable? As Adam said it's a challenge.

Very nice! Looking forward to see what the devs can do with this baby
For all you that didn't read the Portal Post/OP: It's for Recognized Devs only!
Well, if I had one of these devices I'd work on Linux integration into Android.
So what does this mean:
Most developers have a separate machine for doing particular work on their devices, or even any kind of developing in general aside from their Android devices. With Android devices starting to become more powerful than my laptop (and cheaper than when I bought my laptop), we SHOULD be able to harness Android's underbelly to do more things like developing and compiling directly on them, on the fly, and on the go.
Some people suggest using Ubuntu or some other Linux distro for ARM, but that isn't always the most user friendly thing on a smaller screen. Unlike Android which we already know is pretty user friendly.
Now there are some applications that exist that create development type environments for Android but why not just create a toolchain to compile Linux applications for the Android OS so that they're compatible with the Bionic C library?
So in it's most basic form, I'd be making use of this box to test, create and integrate Linux programs into binaries that Android users can use to their hearts content
As for the technicalities, I have a US shipping address, so that won't be a problem.
and @Adam: you can be sure I'll check to see if it's really unbrickable. I have a thing for bricks.. I'm curious to see how unbrickable their "unbrickable" is. If there's a method, I'll publish it :silly:
Please abstent to post no RD members. Thanks

That's the plan. However, I am tempted to suggest that we extend the contest by another week to allow for a greater number of responses. What are everyone's thoughts on the matter?

What more could be done to get more entries? It already had a news article posted.
That being said, I'd find it unfair towards myself and the other entrants if it was extended, since we entered during the timeframe it was initially supposed to last for.
Below are a few (of many) ideas I have had for the CuBox
A small headless server for my command center... err.. I mean house.
central file server, VPN server, webserver
Not sure if there is a stable xbmc distro, and if not, work on that.
Update server for my desktop/mobile applications
More on the development side of things, I'd like to turn it into somewhat of an all-purpose toolkit for Android devices and write a corresponding mobile application using the AOA protocol. I'm thinking somewhat along the lines of Adam's rooting box meets mskip's Samsung/Nexus toolkits. Also, working on bringing CyanogenMOD to it would be another priority.

I think I speak for all of us when I say thank you, Adam, and CuBox for this contest. Development toys/kits are always appreciated in contest form. We're all here because we love to tinker with things, understand how they work, and give that knowledge back to the community so others benefits from our experience.
Thanks again,

When they get the time to go through this and decide who gets them, they'll post it here. And if they did abandon it, Will will let us know. Don't worry guys, just be patient.
Thanks to everyone who submitted.
I just wanted to thank everyone personally. Will is deciding who the winners are and hopefully will give you guys a response soon.
Some of your ideas are really interesting and I would like to see them come to life. I hope the winners will kickstart CuBox development and make the system open to everyone. I, also, hope no-one manages to brick the system otherwise we'll have to change our marketing!
I look forward to seeing the results and wish everyone good luck!
