Hello I am new in the forum and I would like to know can I install windows 7 or 8 in Samsung Note 10.1
PLEASE HELP
You will be able to install Windows 8 on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 -- when you see a pig fly. So, keep your eyes peeled. And, let us know when you see it!
If you wanted windows why didn't you wait for the windows tablets?
At this time you can't install windows(any version except maybe 95) on an Android tablet. You need drivers that we just don't have...
Windows 8 is a closed source operating system thus it will be very hard to get it working as we do not have the drivers

Yes apply for MS licence $175000 per unit .
Though i can let you have MS licence for $800 no questions asked .
jje
you can access your desktop/laptop windows installation through a remote desktop app like splashtop remote desktop, which works pretty well. but yeah, no way to install windows directly on the tablet.
Remote desktops are very slugish though. Cant play a movie through it with out it being choppy. To you devs? Is there a remote desktop app using udp protocol? Or a mixture of udp and tcp like dns can? I think it may be the windowing that is making it choppy

This is your lucky day fella, I've ported windows 9 for you.
Wow, all of you have managed to act like the arse end of an ass. Not every person is tech savy. I seem to read so many threads where some innocent guy asks a question and 10 or 12 people just cant resist the urge to get in a dig. I wonder if you realize your not making the person who asked the question seem silly but rather making yourselves look like adolescent dorks with a nerdon. Sometimes it's ok to let a silly question go by you know.
Further more just what is so silly about his question in the first place. It is more than possible to port windows 8 RT to any device though it would be very much less than legal however any research done by windows will come across this and the 1000 threads like it and perhaps eventually lead microsoft into allowing the porting to certain devices if there were enough demand. Yes thats rather unlikely but it could happen though nothing ever happens without there being a question asked first. And what is wrong with wanting more as well. I like my tablet very much however I certainly wouldn't mind being able to duel boot windows. Yes there are some units that do this if one is interested but this is the device that we have chosen to purchase and by being here are we all not trying to make it better? So who could deny that duel booting would not make it better. Can it be done atm, no. Will it be done in the future? Probably not on this machine. Should people who are interested in such things ask if its possible? Absolutely. Without demand there will be no supply.
pc= windows. tablet: android. enough said, end of story!
as i wouldnt like a pc with android, the same goes to tablet with windows.
Without being a jerk like others, of course no, some simple reasons no dvd drive, usb drive, and really no way to port over a completely new os that is kept very private. And doing this would be a risk to any developer that tries.

I'm with you on these people behaving like idiots. Whilst there appears to be little chance of Windows on a Samsung Exynos4 device, it is not impossible to port Windows between platforms. See work done by Dark Forces Team (DFT) with Windows Phone 7 and a very limited Windows 8 on the HTC phones. Unfortunately there are enough easier targets that not many people will focus on such a hard task.

I was looking into this windows 8 on my galaxy note as well. Just because I don't have much faith in the PC world anymore and I always come to this site for the correct answers to my thoughts.
Keep seeing YouTube videos of people doing it on all sorts of tabs.
But YouTube is full of prank videos mainly.
I'm not A+ certified but I figure most aren't so I don't understand all the bad comments. Pretty sure this forum was founded for questions like this. It's not a dumb question to ask.
But trolls will be trolls I guess ....

Dear XDA: I think the time has come for you to step out of the shadows. I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and started looking for a magazine in their sizable magazine section. I was frustrated when i went to look for a magazine about android -anything- and found zero mags. However, i did happen to find 12 magazines covering apple. Soo i searched online and to my dismay have only found one magazine that covers android and only apps. Please save all of us who love android and need something to read on the toilet. I promise you i will be the first to subscribe. There is a desert wasteland when it comes to android magazines and you could be our oasis. Seems like now could be the opportune time.
(sorry for the dramatics...just thought it would be fun to post my thoughts about this...)
A magazine on Android ? hmmm...
It's a good idea. There's inough content out there right now to fill a year's worth of monthly editions. I'd subscribe (as long as it wasn't priced unreasonably), and it could open way more people to Android rooting/flashing/modding...

Sounds cool. But sounds dangerous for xda also. Just thinking that people who aren't supposed to root or mod their phones might pick up a magazine andtry, then fail, maybe even brick their phones, and then they try sue xda. All i'm trying to say is I think it's best for people who don't have the mindset for modding or whatnot, to not be introduced to it or even tempted.

A Warning on any article helps, they cannot get sued just because someone brick their phone, it wont be XDA fault.
Yeah but some narrow-minded twit is bound to try and go after xda at some point anyways, if it hasn't happened already. And there's always an opportunistic lawyer to accomodate (apologies to any members who happen to be lawyers lol). That's why there are disclaimers at the top of almost every thread. At least magazine revenue would help pay the legal defense fees.
This site has gotten so big since Android got hot, there's a constant influx of people who just bought their first smartphone and already know they want it rooted with CM7 and A2SD, but have no idea how to make it happen. If properly implemented, the mag could be a roadmap to get them started, and teach them some forum etiquitte (search, read, search, read, find correct forum to ask in) before they end up neck deep in technical terms they've never heard before, and a device that no longer boots. Beats following some half-ass youtube video with a megaupload link and then having a first post on xda titled 'help i bricked my...'
Edit: damn you, skepticalguy, you stole my spot ;-p

A warning/disclaimer won't be a magical 'no lawsuit' pass for anyone. If enough people face issues and ends up bricking their devices, the magazine will get sued. Whether the lawsuit succeeds or not is up in the air, but I doubt it's 100% guaranteed to fail and, more likely than not, retailers selling the magazine will then ask themselves if they should continue stocking it or not.
And, of course, we're just talking about lawsuits from regular folks. Imagine if Google (or any number of other corporations involved in profiting from Android) gets a hold of the news that there's a magazine out there advising the general population on hacking the OS. Somehow, I think this is going to be another one of those times when 'Do No Evil' no longer applies.
If XDA decides to gets its own magazine, it should do what others have done: Give advice to look up how to do it, but do not offer any direct advice. If the people reading the magazine decides to continue doing it, then they only have whatever advice source they looked up to blame if something screws up. Of course, this still doesn't give the 'No Lawsuits' pass, but it'll probably be a much stronger case for the magazine.
All of this could just be my pessimism speaking, so no one has to feel that what I said will be unalterable reality. Still, it seems like an awful lot of risk for an attempt to get into a market that is supposedly not doing so well. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being online-exclusive. I doubt Engadget, with its 5+ million visitors, is complaining.
True true. The xda portal is pretty much like engadget itself. And engadget gets some of its news from xda also. Guess the problem is, the amount of people that are interested in hacking and modding, which is a relatively small amount. And well, as said before, we don't want to be inviting people who aren't supposed to be hacking or modding, else we get more threads saying how they bricked their phones. So maybe it's best to just stay as it is now.
^ Yes, you are right about that, but perhaps it's not as matter of exposure.
Look at the iPhone. Jailbreaking is much more widespread than Android rooting, but last I heard, it was still only about 2-4% of the entire iPhone userbase that was doing it. As others mentioned, there are several iPhone/Apple magazines too.
I think hacking has always been the domain of a small number of folks who probably knows the method to find out how to do such things by themselves anyway. The overwhelming majority probably doesn't want to hack and additional exposure by magazines to them might increase the hacking community by a small amount, but probably not any very significantly.
Rooting/jailbreaking/custom ROMS/etc will probably continue to be the domain of folks like those who frequent XDA and it's unlikely that it'll ever be as popular as, say, downloading MP3s until it becomes a super easy/risk-free task that has an undeniable benefit to the common man.
But frankly, I don't see a need to make it as common as downloading MP3s anyway. XDA is freely available to anyone who wants to know and, for those who don't want to know, let them continue using a stock Samsung Nexus S.
Yes... xda is the way forward! It is improving alot!!!!!!!!!
Now we have xda tv, i cant wait to see whats next!

Asus Transformer 2 (Prime) was just confirmed an hour ago, didn't see any posts about it in General so decided to throw one up myself.
Comes with Nvidia's Quad-core, or Penta-core depending on how you look at it, processor, most likely Ice Cream Sandwich if not Honeycomb with an upgrade by the end of the year. It's also thinner than both the Ipad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 at only 8.3mm with a Micro-SD card slot and Mini-HDMI excluding the ports that will eventually come on the keyboard dock.
Can't post links since I don't have eight posts yet, so if you want to find more info just google Transformer Prime and I'm sure you'll get a lot more information.
kal-el chips, finally!
this thing is a bit too shiny, but i can ignore that for how epicly thin it looks, the raw power, and how great its going to be to use (taken from the transformer 1)

The Tegra 3 chip uses four 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 cores, in addition to another Cortex-A9 made on a low-power process, that runs at 500MHz. When the tablet is doing mundane things like checking emails, it drops onto the low-power core to save power.
It is logically a quad-core chip, but it will switch to a single low-power core whenever possible to save power.
Put windows 8 on it and I'll buy 10

No, if I buy a tablet I want a full desktop, or at least laptop experience out of it. Someone brings up the topic of a brand new Android tablet, and your response is "if it had [my favorite software-maker's OS] on it, I'd buy 10." How, exactly, is that a compliment?
Oh, right, 'cause you're a troll!
That statement was actually in relation to the razr thread, however the hardware of this looks outstanding and I'd love to see it run a desktop OS. Asus announced some new 2012 windows 8 tablets though and I'm sure at least one will use a similar chassis so no worries. If I own a tablet computer I want it to be a small computer, not a big phone.

Oh, well gosh darn. I assumed you were talking about, you know, the topic of this thread—and not some random, unrelated phone. Silly me.
Well, I suppose I missed the line about domestic abuse in the original post. Please sir, practice what you preach. Do not knock a thread off topic and then proceed to insult someone else for doing so. While we're on such a kick, please do not insult my English, I am not originally from an English speaking nation. However, looking at your posts, I could provide you with tutoring. There is no reason to turn every thread that I post in to a jumbled mess, your insistence on doing so is based on a ban you received that was not by my report.
As far as the tablet goes, it's outstanding hardware, I just don't see any current mobile OS replacing my laptop. Android is, however, getting closer and closer. Build a decent version of WINE on there and I may just pick one up.

This isn't a topic about whether or not tablets are technologically equivalent at handling the tasks of a laptop, as we could all agree they are not. (Again, I'm the one being off topic?) But I certainly agree with you. I'd like tablets to be more like laptops than phones, but (back to on topic...) the introduction of quad-core chips in tablets is certainly the right direction for accomplishing this.
To be quite honest, I don't see the core count as anything outstanding. I mean the only issue we really have with tossing these into phones is size constraints. Tablets get much larger. What's really going to matter is how they make use of such power. Without some crysis quality games, what is the point in all those cores?
lmao I've never seen a thread derailed so quickly.
You guys are badass. Keep it up!!
Man, this is definitely the hardest thing I've ever decided to post to XDA...
Long story not-so-short: I won a GC to Best Buy for 500$ from a local gaming establishment...(read: illegal slot-machine parlor type place).
I had no idea what to get, as I already have a jillion Android devices/tables/phones/accessories and so on...
On a whim, I decided to just get an iPad 2, (just the 16GB, WIFI-only version, just to kinda see what all the hype was all about, and also due to the fact that I had played a couple of games on the store demos and was pretty impressed.)
Mind you, (and if you have ever read any of my anti-Apple rants on XDA) this was my FIRST time owning anything from the company, and I hadn't really touched an I-anything since the mid-eighties, when I used an original Mac in my high school computer lab for writing assignments..
Now, having no recent experience whatsoever with "today's" iOS, upon first use of thie thing I was greatly impressed just with the slickness of the interface overall, and the fact that the first couple of FPS's I legally bought from the app store looked and ran flawlessly (oh yeah, that Temple Run thing is also like video-crack).
I was pretty floored already, but when I decided to jailbreak it and install the basics like Cydia, installous, and Dreamboard, that's kinda when "**** got real".
I realized that many of the arguments I used online when dismissing iOS as a "real" option for someone who is into device hackery as much as I am suddenly dissolved...
No app drawer, or widgets?
No longer the case, solved by a Dreamboard theme...
No live wallpapers, or custom keyboards?
Same story.
ONLY able to use a proprietary Market for apps, music, books, movies, etc?
Solved by Installous and Cydia.
Bonus?
I can theme this thing to look and feel just like a Honeycomb tablet:
For instance, here's my current setup on this thing, and I'm really just scratching the surface of learning what can be done with it:

Here's a page that shows a couple of more themes I can 'one-click' add:
And here's a freaking app-drawer on an iOS device, something I didn't know was possible:
Basically, I'm just "coming out" and admitting that I'm actually quite smitten with this iPad, which is something I NEVER thought I would say:
(I still couldn't EVER use an iPhone as a daily because there are still a ****ton of limitations compared to Android, so that would never happen, but I gotta say, that for a tablet, even compared to my other Android tablets, right now this is my favorite....)
Please, don't hate me, fellas...(but have fun with the obvious flames that are to be expected....I just had to give props where props were due.)
Anyone else out there with a similar experience?

I have an itouch and I've used a number of iPads they are nice I'm considering getting one but I'm waiting a bit more just to see if the rumors about the iPad 3 are true. I've already got apps in iTunes that will work that I bought so not a big deal. To each their own a lot of people hate Apple I do on certain things but they do actually make some good products.
Nothing wrong with a device that makes you happy, regardless of the make/os.
Ill admit to having one for a week, but my reaction was different. After having a galaxy tab 10.1 I couldn't adjust and even with jail breaking I hated it.
Hope it continues to keep you satisfied. What most diehards on both sides often forget is there's room for both makes in the world.
The best device will always be whatever makes you happy.
Congrats on your purchase.
Mazook...i would have never thought it possible! Well it is a great device so have fun and enjoy. People bicker alot about apple/android and which is better but i feel both are great. So why not just enjoy all the great mobile tech we have available and appreciate it for what it all is......AWESOME!! Thanks for sharing man.

I don't get why people get on here to brag about their ipads and iPhones. Really now.
Now that right there is a damn sexy setup for an iPad. Jailbreaking was definitely a must for me on my last 2 iOS devices. People can hate on Apple all they want (like I do ) but they do make high quality products.

iPads are OK, as long as you can never ever ever EVER touch iTunes. That's the deal breaker for me. I can't stand that POS. My wife has an unmodded iPad, and every time I have to update her machine, iTunes pisses me off. Heck, it even pisses her off because her bible software (Olive Tree) seems to lose settings after a major OS rev. I've had to fight with the stupid thing to get her purchases from OT back onto her device. The device itself isn't bad, although it's pretty limited for me, but iTunes is the debil, Momma!
Well since we are confessing... it was actually me who chopped down the cherry tree. George Washington is innocent! Whew! I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders!

Are we really so engaged in fake-warfare with cellphones that threads such as these are the norm at XDA?
Just curious help me out here.
I love my iPad 2. I have played with practically every other tablet out there, I still think it's the only one worth getting.

lol...because that's the only thing my brain knows how to use: I can manipulate through home screens, sling thru apps no prob with an Android setup: it's all I've ever known: seriously, until I put that simple little Xoom theme on it, I was moving thru screens on it like a retarded baboon might: (no offense to any retarded baboons out there).
Also, to Phatman: not trying to come on XDA to "glorify" this thing: I was just pleasantly surprised by something from a company that, in the past, I always (rightfully!) bashed because of their business model and completely proprietary products: I'm just showing that I found what a difference a jailbroken device can make: I'm not selling or advocating the purchase of one: Hell, I thought I'd be the LAST person on Earth to ever own one: the ONLY idevice I've ever purchased before was a Bluetooth keyboard from Apple that I bought from Walmart, at like 2AM to test out on a Nook Color when CM first got it working: they had no other Bluetooth keyboards from other manufacturers available, and it took me like 20 minutes of just staring at the package to make up my mind a "go thru with the purchase", with all the "ethical issues" the entire buying process was creating for me....
Trust me, bro: this was far more "confession-time" than "finding new religion-time".
Edit: Robzilla: thanks for the tip about iTunes: haven't used it: now I'll know not to use it in the future.

iOS is NO DOUBT a fantastic product and device. but 2 things do bother me, and both of them are really more about business
1. i shouldnt have to jailbreak/root a device to customize it... (keyboards, themes, launchers, etc)
2. i REFUSE to buy products from a business who conducts themselves in such a sleazy manner. just like i cant stand the fanboy who justifies apples ethics because "they are superior". sounds a lot like a certain Pro-Aryan leader of the past...
other than that, im glad you are happy with it! remember, i hate APPLE, not you.

The iPad is a great product but Apple sucks as a company that's all
The iPad destroys Android tablets. The transformer prime is less usable than the iPad from early last year. I prefer Android on the phone over iOS, but Google and the manufacturers don't get what made the iPad successful, stability, convenience, and the apple store warranty process when something goes wrong, not specs and features. People go to a laptop/desktop when they want specs and features. If your customer has to pay shipping for defects or read 50 page filled forum with complaints, then you are doing it wrong.

If Samsung would only improve their update policies. People buying an iPad know apple will give them the cool new features for at least 2 years after the sale. Android buyers are becoming paralyzed because they don't know which device will be supported. Anybody with professional sales experience will tell you eliminating obstacles to buying is key, I wish Samsung would realize this.

The phones being released now are awesome out the of the box. SGII running 2.3 is good. Ice Cream update is only going to make the majority angry. Why do people think that updates that change the look of the device equates to good? It doesn't. On XDA we are an extreme minority. I wish more people would realize this. GPS works, phone works, text work, apps are awesome with many choices to pick from so what is wrong with it? Oh... it isn't running the latest android OS and that means the device isn't supported, right? Wrong. We just got another update for random fixes on a already stable device.
Here is my reasoning in regards to Apple projects or Android. If I have to go to the extreme to modify it to my liking then your not getting my money. I will not support locking down my devices. I would enjoy a free Ipad. I'd probably love it. But I'm not going to give Apple any money. I'm not going to give Motorola any love with a locked boot loader either. Or Assassin Creed for the PC, they aren't getting any support from me. The choice between Barnes and Nobles and Amazon Tablet for me is simple, Amazon because they didn't lock the boot loader.
Greetings all...
You may be aware that verygreen is working on CM10 development for the 8.9" Kindle Fire HD. I am also working on getting this working on the Kindle Fire HD 7".
What works:
-Almost nothing so far. I can get past the bootloader and CWM will run (Thanks, verygreen!), but the CM10 ROM still needs to be developed further. I can flash it, and it appears to complete, but nothing comes up on the screen.
Trust me, this will be a slow process, but it IS BEING WORKED ON!
I will post any progress that I make.
::UPDATES::
[12/4] I now have screen working.
[12/5] Boots fully, but no touchscreen and the resolution appears to be wrong. (see image below.)

Hi!
This is very good news!!!
Great work
As green has noted, the nexus 7 is a far superior deal, better hardware for the $, and is inherently unlockable by the manufacturer.
(Just wanted to note that in this thread for anyone considering a 7" tablet purchase. Go with open systems. The fire hd boot loader is now unlockable, but the next hardware may not be so easy.)

I agree, the Nexus 7 is a better deal right now....
But once CM10 is running on the KFHD7, I bet it'll give the N7 a run for it's money. Plus, you know there are going to be a million people (exaggerated) who want to load up their KFHD7 with CM10, so someone has to make it happen.
Oh, and just so everyone knows.... I have a Nexus 7 too.
good to hear it's going to happen on the 7" variant. Can't wait. :fingers-crossed:

No.
Now that we have the ability to unlock the bootloader, Safestrap becomes unnecessary.
Yeah don't get me wrong... I'm all for developing alternate oses for formerly locked devices, if only to demonstrate how futile and immoral (for lack of a better word-- dickish is another) it is to try to lock people out of their own devices. . but why buy them to begin with if there are better options?

Because people like having a choice. From everything I have seen and read, the physical quality of a nexus 7 left a lot to be desired. I like the speakers and screen on the kindle hd better. I am tied up to Amazon ecosystem. So many reasons. It's a sad world when people only want you to buy one thing. Competition is good for everyone. The original kindle fire is the entire reason the Nexus 7 came to be at that price.
Not to mention, that no matter how many people you tell fattire, they aren't all going to go out and return their kfhd, and buy an N7. It would be like me going around the nexus 7 forum, and telling people that the kfhd has a way better screen and seems to be a better buy. When you post useless comments on these forums, it certainly isn't helping get anything done:these threads don't need to be arguments.

If it were true that the KFHD 7" were a better buy, then by all means anyone should say so in any forum. I'm not going to modulate my opinion because I'm in the KF HD forum. The facts are the facts. Although the build quality of the N7 is great, I wasn't talking about screen quality. I was focusing on something more fundamental-- the locked bootloader bug, which comes with every KFHD.
Without escalating this too much, I don't think our posts pointing to this bug are "useless"-- not everyone here has made a decision on what 7" device to buy yet. While the bootloader being unlocked comes very easy and quickly for you and seems to be taken for granted, poring over uboot code and finding and/or creating fixes is a lot of extra and IMO unnecessary work that could be better spent on other, more useful things.
I am tied up to Amazon ecosystem.

That's precisely the problem with the locked bootloader. It's a power grab, an attempt to lock you into using only one OS, and buying only through one company. And so, without a bootloader fix, you're stuck with a single OS, without access to source code, as you are tied to their services more and more. You said "I like having a choice." Well, it's not a free system out of the box; it severely limits your choices, and that matters. As far as 7" prices go-- credit the KF all you like, but do remember the KF was an unlocked device. (Also, the 7" Nooks, ultra-cheap android tabs, and the Play Store deserve credit too, but I'll leave this for another discussion.)
Anyway, we've said our opinion. The readers can take it or ignore it.
Okay, it boots. Touchscreen not working, and resolution appears to be off.
I'll add this to the OP as well.
Not to derail a thread for CM10 dev, but I thought I should weigh in so that fattire doesn't look like a complete a-hole.
I totally agree with his sentiment of "dev's cannot keep spending their time opening devices which are locked." Consumers need to understand this isn't a "given". Finding exploitable code takes weeks by a dedicated dev who does it for free. And is only getting harder. There will be a time in the not so distant future where locked bootloaders will be perfected. The only way we can tell vendors that this is wrong is by not buying their products. (However futile this may be -- see my reasoning near the end)
I also disagree on a few minor points which are more specific to the how/why we end up with these devices and the economics of ecosystems.
* We get these devices as gifts. And for various reasons we don't really want / can't return them.
* We end up with less than usable devices when we move into areas that aren't as desirable (IE: international use of Kindle's can be tough in Amazon's ecosystem)
Which makes for users wanting to install a new OS like CM10 or another variation of AOSP.
Amazon makes money on the ecosystem usage. Not from the tablet sale. So just the act of buying it isn't going to score a huge payoff for Amazon. It's more to do when you buy the books, movies and apps from their stores. If everyone bought a KFireHD and then unlocked and put CM10 on it. I think the message to Amazon would be: your ecosystem needs work.
Lastly, consider the # of users who have modded their 1st gen KFire's with a new OS. Now take that # (I'd guess it's in the 40k range) and match it up with the millions who bought them. From a practical stand point that kills the "Don't buy their products until they unlock them" argument. But it's still the right thing to do if you are the kind of user who wants to change their OS. Don't buy a locked device and then hope to be rescued later by a dev.
Perhaps we can sort of agree to disagree on some things, and let this thread continue.
EDIT: Grats ReverendKJR
I think hashcode said it very well. I know a lot of dev types who refuse to contribute at all to locked devices on principal or because it's a hassle... But I (obviously I hope) think these broken devices *should* be fixed and alternative oses made available lest it appear locking bootloaders are an appropriate or successful strategy (ie , capturing and locking in customers vs. keeping their business on the merits)... Although there are security/privacy/performance/compatibility factors too) My earlier comments and i think greens too were directed to those considering a new 7" purchase.
Nice work, rev.

I suppose it comes down to priorities, but for many users here an unlocked bootloader is important. The suggestion that folks buy the Nexus 7 isn't contradictory to competition. In fact, the suggestion to buy the Nexus 7 is an exercise of buying from the competition, in part, to voice an opinion that unlocked bootloaders are important.
Locking the bootloader must have a negative financial impact on a company in order for them to leave their devices open.
For me, the trend of locked bootloaders and losing device control goes beyond simply impeding my recreation. Its a matter of security and getting my monies worth from a device.
Keep in mind the people in this thread suggesting to buy an open device are the very same people that are responsible for spending their time and money to unlock the closed devices. This should, at least in some way, give their opinions some weight.

Nice work so far. I agree somewhat with what others regarding purchasing locked devices however I think there is something attractive about tinkering with something that a manufacturer told you they don't want you tinkering with.
That being said, I won one in a drawing and it should arrive this week or early next. I might be willing to do some testing if you need it at some point. Let me know what I can do to help.
Great progress, so I believe we can agree to drop the subject with no further discussion? Very good than.

Note: This contest is open to Recognized Developers who live in the US and UK only. Winners will be selected by myself and Elite Recognized Developer AdamOutler. More details will follow in the associated XDA Portal post, so be sure to check out www.xda-developers.com .
Good luck to all who enter!

Aww.. I'm selecting? I was going to enter and offer to develop a way to brick one seeing as how their website says they're Unbrickable for developers.. Sounds like a challenge. Someone else do this for me
I would consider toying with XBMC, linux, android or whatever i can toy with on it and look at trying to do an AOSP/Cyanogenmod build on it if its possible. Its very low powered, but appears to have some kernel source available. Is it feasible to be done? no idea. Would have to take a shot at it to find out.
Thanks,
-h8rift
EDIT: Just re-read Adam's note...yeah i'm sure i'll brick it along the way and let you know how it goes, hehe.
I just got the acceptance letter for RD a couple days ago (proof, I'm also sure a member of the developer committee could confirm this), but it's not set on my profile yet.
What I'd like to try with the box is getting an interface set up on it to use it as a car stereo with a touchscreen mounted in the dashboard. I've set up a similar system with an old netbook I have, but power requirements for the netbook raise some issues, mainly with draining my car battery. A lightweight ARM system could largely mitigate, if not completely solve this issue.
There are also space issues. I would like something that I can mount to the back of an LCD and have in a contained easy-to-remove unit, instead of having to run power and VGA cords through my dash.
I also would like to use it as a system for managing my door locks, with a USB keypad possibly stuck in the back of my truck bed, where I can enter a pin and have it lock/unlock my doors. I would also like to try to use a fingerprint scanner to unlock the doors.
Here's some pictures of what I have now:
Picture 1
Picture 2
Picture 3
Picture 4 Don't worry, I've cleaned the wiring since then
Picture 5 XBMC with a modified Xeebo skin. This is the best media player I've found for the job. I was using Winamp at first, but XBMC has cool visualizations and whatnot.
Picture 6 Closer up, I've since filled in that top metal bar with a sharpie
Picture 7 Cleaner wiring, though still a bit messy. Note that my truck is old enough that I don't have a passenger airbag.
Not shown: I've got an acutator in the driver-side door, and a circuit that I built to accept TTL-level voltages and trigger it (essentially two relays making an H bridge, powered by two transistors that get set high by the TTL input. Both relays are ground open and charged closed, so I can set either one high and control the actuator)
Edit: Just to note, I had previously designed this to work with a RPi, but I found it a bit lackluster and not fast enough for what I wanted. Not to mention it inexplicably died one day.
Hello everybody!
First I need to say, that I'm from Hungary, not from US or UK, but I'm really interested in this, so I give it a try. (I can pay for shipping if required.)
Android is my favourite OS, so I would like to make CyanogenMod configuration for this device first. When it's ready I would like to play with linux too and developing ROM's with ubuntu. I have access to the xda build server, so it will be a good pair for the developing.
I wanted to buy an RPi a long time ago, but I didn't have enough money to buy it. If I get one of three CuBox now, i won't betray XDA. All my development for/with this device will be public here.
Thank you for your attention!
atis112
PS: Unbrickable? As Adam said it's a challenge.

Very nice! Looking forward to see what the devs can do with this baby
For all you that didn't read the Portal Post/OP: It's for Recognized Devs only!
Well, if I had one of these devices I'd work on Linux integration into Android.
So what does this mean:
Most developers have a separate machine for doing particular work on their devices, or even any kind of developing in general aside from their Android devices. With Android devices starting to become more powerful than my laptop (and cheaper than when I bought my laptop), we SHOULD be able to harness Android's underbelly to do more things like developing and compiling directly on them, on the fly, and on the go.
Some people suggest using Ubuntu or some other Linux distro for ARM, but that isn't always the most user friendly thing on a smaller screen. Unlike Android which we already know is pretty user friendly.
Now there are some applications that exist that create development type environments for Android but why not just create a toolchain to compile Linux applications for the Android OS so that they're compatible with the Bionic C library?
So in it's most basic form, I'd be making use of this box to test, create and integrate Linux programs into binaries that Android users can use to their hearts content
As for the technicalities, I have a US shipping address, so that won't be a problem.
and @Adam: you can be sure I'll check to see if it's really unbrickable. I have a thing for bricks.. I'm curious to see how unbrickable their "unbrickable" is. If there's a method, I'll publish it :silly:
Please abstent to post no RD members. Thanks

What more could be done to get more entries? It already had a news article posted.
That being said, I'd find it unfair towards myself and the other entrants if it was extended, since we entered during the timeframe it was initially supposed to last for.
Below are a few (of many) ideas I have had for the CuBox
A small headless server for my command center... err.. I mean house.
central file server, VPN server, webserver
Not sure if there is a stable xbmc distro, and if not, work on that.
Update server for my desktop/mobile applications
More on the development side of things, I'd like to turn it into somewhat of an all-purpose toolkit for Android devices and write a corresponding mobile application using the AOA protocol. I'm thinking somewhat along the lines of Adam's rooting box meets mskip's Samsung/Nexus toolkits. Also, working on bringing CyanogenMOD to it would be another priority.
