I love android because of its limitless options of customizing, whether you root, or do not want to root.
Looks pretty nice
A general computing platform
Why do I love Android?
I can buy a phone that is more powerful than any computer built more than 10 years ago, run it stock, and have a perfectly capable machine that will handle 100% of the duties for 99% of the population. I can take that same phone, disable some security settings, and run any app available in the wild west of the internet (IOS needs to jailbreak to install anything not approved by Apple). A simple root and custom rom, and I can modify the feel, performance, and capabilities any way I see fit. Throttle that massive dual core processor to 300MHz and get 2 weeks of battery, OC to 2100 and catch it on fire, whatever. I can access an accelerometer, magnetometer, barometer, photodetector, proximity sensor, and GPS network on almost any Android device.
Android is a suite of tools that I can use to solve problems and create. Most phones are devices that are opaque to the user.
When I have my phone, I have a mythical device straight out of a fantasy novel. I can know my position anywhere on earth, to within meters. I can contact almost anyone on the planet. Instantaneous access to entertainment, news, financial information, databases, and people. If there is a mountain in the distance, I can measure how tall it is, look up how tall it is, or ask someone else how tall it is. Two days ago I used my phone to level a chemical reactor worth upwards of $10,000 and improved the efficiency by 15%, just because I could.
That is why I love Android.

So that is how the winner will be chosen. Truly random. Goodnight and good luck everyone!!!!

Given Samsungs previous support of Cyanogen this is probably good news. Since he announced that Cyanogen will remain a side project of his it means we won't see it by default on Samsung phones but it will mean that their phones will probably edge closer to something resembling Cyanogen and be great for those that never switch to community created roms.
With Google buying Motorola, Samsung knows they need to step up their game to compete against Googorola phones in the future, this will be part of that process.

The past few days have been pretty exciting.
Whatever reasons are being announced, for Samsungs hiring of Mr. Cyanogen, intimidating Google has to be a big one. Especially being that it is only 11 months since Google tried to shut down Cyanogen (http://bit.ly/obp8sD).
Also, everyone is now talking about Amazon's killer Android tablet (http://bit.ly/mUS5O0). I think all rumors but Amazon's Kindle shows they can do tablets, Amazon doesn't have the "just for nerds" label that scares some Android and maybe even iPad users away, and if Amazon sells the tablet for $250, a $50 loss for each tablet they sell, Amazon will become one of the biggest Android players.
Google's purchase of Motorola Mobile has been classified by some as a patent battle but others (http://bit.ly/mUS5O0) think there is more to it.
And Apple and Nokia seem to be joining in the patent battle (http://bit.ly/n2q0Oe).
Leverage may just be your thoughts CD, but I think they're on target. Though I agree with your concept, I'm pretty certain I don't have a clue about the details. The big boys are playing hardball and all I can do is watch.

Seriously though, I'm about two weeks new to the HOX AND XDA but have been a member of several "other" android forums. I dev and theme(mainly for myself) and am no expert but always willing to help when and where I can and help anyone. By doing so I believe it creates a much better community. I'm currently working on root for 2.20 since my HOX was cursed with it out of the box. I'm open for testing if anyone needs it since I am within my 30 day window and am on really good terms with my AT&T guy.
Hi all, I'm a HTC fan, Canadian and like the Hox community a fair bit.

I'm Jake, I'm 21, I live in Topeka Kansas, I'm a personal trainer, I play rugby and I'm a phone whore. The one X is the only phone I've ever pre ordered. Currently my one X is naked except for a zagg hd. I have a black cruzerlite tpu for when I go on road trips. I'm a fan of Turge's roms and I'm loving viper, my second favorite rom is paranoid android but the battery life just can't compare to vioer. My previous phone was the og atrix. I used a lumia 900 between that and the one X for all of about 10 days just to see what all the windows phone hype was about. I wasn't a fan. I'm actually in a happy committed relationship with my one X and plan on keeping it for a good while and even as a back up phone after I move on. There's just not much I can complain about with this phone.
I'm Rob. I do IT stuff, or at least that's the idea. Chyeah.... That's about it.

My name is Brooks. I'm 19, from Kansas City, MO. I've been developing Android for a few years now, and I really got into development with the Inspire. I moved to the One X back in July, and have been waiting patiently to bring something new to the development scene.
A buddy from my old development team from the DHD/Inspire joined me on the One X, so expect to see some new work on the horizon.
If you ever wanna chat, add me on FB, follow me on Twitter, I got G+, and GTalk as well. Have fun guys!
I have been on XDA for several years, from Windows Mobile days. I've served some time with iOS, tried Windows Phone and webOS. I enjoy android, and the part time hobby it is to experiment and try new things with my phone.
I'm 27 with a 7 year old son (yeah, we should have called him "oops" ) and a 2 year old princess attached to my calf when she's not torturing our pit bull.
I live in Utah, never smoked or had alcohol (it started as a religious thing, but I'm not active and have seen alcohol destroy too many lives), I'm not a polygamist, I am somewhat obsessed with Star Trek, I enjoy dry whit type of humor and sarcasm after growing up with British parents.
I try to keep it light and casual unless someone pushes a hot button issue.

Hello my name's Eddie most around here just call me E, I'm 44 and I have a 10 yr old daughter & 6 yr old son. I pre-ordered my ONE X and been follow this forum since the very beginning.
Been coming on XDA since windows mobile. NRG windows mobile 6.5 roms!
I'm 24 (25 in 2 months) from New Jersey. I'm not into IT and my career is in Finance but i'm very fond of technology. I read a lot of technology sites because technology is a hobby for me and i find it very entertaining to follow the entire industry.
My smartphones have been Nokia N80, HTC Touch Pro 2, HTC Surround (1st gen windows phone), and HTC One X.
One X is my first purchased android device although i did run it on my HP Touchpad (cm9).
I was never committed to a certain mobile platform but i've come to realize that i really like the control and custom ability of android. I think i might stick with android from now on.
As for my username: I'm not much of an alcoholic but i do enjoy having a drink or 5. (Black Label) and the occasional smoke.
I've learned a lot from XDA over the past few years and i still have a long way to go before i fully understand what the hell most of you are talking about. So cheers to that.
I'm Brad, 30 with crappy tattoos and a receding hairline. Contrary to what my incredibly unoriginal username would have you believe, I have NO metal in my head. I install home theaters, control systems, networks, and energy management systems for a living. I travel quite a bit for the EMS part of my job. Like all of you, I am a nerd and I love all things tech. The main focus of my love is Android. I think it's so cool that we have phones that are more powerful than laptops we used to own. We hold in our palm a piece of technology that is like something out of a sci-fi movie when we were kids and that to me is awesome. Crossing my fingers for hoverboards in 2015 I've been with Android since the HTC Hero. Have also owned the OG EVO 4G, EVO 3D, Galaxy Nexus, Epic 4G Touch, and now the One X. Also owned (and loved) an iPhone 4S for my first few months with AT&T.
I'm Matt, 17 and from Queensland, Australia. I have been on xda for a couple of years since my first android device the HTC Desire. I'm in my final year of high school at the moment and would really like to get into Android development but don't really know where to start.

Hi Guys. I was wondering if there is any apps or method I could use to (block incoming) {know how to do this and out going calls and even mms if possible. I have this phone rooted and and running cm7. Its acctually a HTC inspire. However you guys in the HOX forum are my family
Reason behind this is my daughter is getting [email protected] grades. I think it is important in this day for a teenager to have comunications for emergency. I'd like to know how I can limit her from usage. ATT wants to charge me 5 bucks a month to do this.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
I never understood the rational behind doing something like that. Do you honestly think denying her the ability to use a phone is going to motivate her to spending her time actually studying? I know I wouldn't.
Sent from my HTC One XL
Rational is for every action there is a reaction. Good grades are required to have a cell phone. Bad grades = no cell phone.
Or choice if you like? Choose to have bad grades = choose to not have a cell.
I've taken it away. But would like her to have the opportunity in emergency to contact essential persons.

I guess I don't view negative reinforcement as an effective solution. Granted, I'm not a parent but I was more recently a teenager with bad grades. Well... Not that recent but you get the idea. I certainly don't mean to tell you how to raise your children and think I might be overstepping my bounds.
Anyway... I you can still dial 911 if you take the SIM card out on a lot of phones. She won't be able to call you but could still use the phone for emergency use only. Dunno of an app to do what you're asking unfortunately.

I understand you position. I was there once also. Everyone needs structure. Like android you need a breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. We try and structure Our enforcement like the society that they will eventually have to live in. Choice is the problem, and choice is the solution. There are good choices that have good outcomes and not so good choices..... you get the point, I hope. I also thought about my ten year old who has a galaxy phone. I don't want her calling anyone but family. We need a kiddie ROM

Don't let anyone tell you how to parent, only you know what will and won't work on your kids. Good on you for being an active parent, regardless of how you choose to do it
Also, rationale, not rational.
I'm just speaking from my experience as a child... I'm 17 now... My parents don't believe in grounding or taking anything away on that note... I think that's the way to go I believe when parents take stuff away you want to do worse to piss them off... I've gotten caught stealing(I'm sorry) smoking weed.. all they give me is a slap on the wrist...I have a 4.3 GPA taking intense classes and having the freedom and that makes me hapyy and want to work harder ...just my two cents ..everyone has their own beliefs though

Letting your girl "pick her destiny" is good, at least I think so. I'm 20 year old now, and when I was getting in trouble in school and what not my parents would discipline as they saw fit. I was being extremely dumb and thought it was cool to do drugs(weed) but, because I was in soccer and working my way towards a soccer scholarship... My parent's didn't do a whole lot, I just got teh truck taken away from me for a few weeks, and I had to tell my coach if i ever wanted to get my keys back. He is like a second father to me, and he kept getting on me when I messed up at practice. I'll never forget certain moments at practice either... It was absolute hell but, I've never touched that stuff since. I've carried a 4.0 through my senior year, and currently have a 3.6 in my soph year of college. Scholarship is almost up, and now I'm looking to join the military. I can't thank my parents enough for the way they handled that. Most f the people that I have hung out with in high school are now dealers/arrested for possession with intent to distribute/pregnant... That list could go on forever.

Experimentation is different than using, in my eyes. If I ever have kids, I say that because my little cousins are natural living birth control, I wouldn't scold them for being a teenager but like you said, I wouldn't let it run/ruin their lives.

So we strayed off topic... Kind of. The title does say off topic. but it was more of sharing stories of what parents did. At least, with me it is. Don't know about Omar

Hi guys, so apparently I've given the impression that I'm a conceited **** on these boards. I like to think that I'm not, so first off I'd like to just apologize for the way I've come across, and now that my ban is removed I'll be using these boards with the intention that they were given; to discuss Android, Skyrocket, and all things related. No more flaming. You'll just have to see if I follow through.
So, that aside I'd like to ask for your help developers/users. I'm writing my final paper on XDA-Developers (we have to analyze a digital public sphere, Google Habermas public sphere for more information, and write a paper on a specific line of inquiry about a commons based peer production) and my line of inquiry is essentially, how this massive community falls together without the guidance of Google.
They essentially just release Android code to public, and all of this happened. No one at Google told CM to exist, or any of the wonderful ROM creators/porters that exist on this board, and no one told us users to install these ROMs. So if you could write up WHY you guys do it, it'd be incredibly helpful. I'm talking about anything from a 800 word speech about open-source and the message behind it, to just being bored, to just liking the looks of your phone, to just being part of the community.
Thanks, and again I'm sorry for previous interactions.
I do it because I like the freedom allowed on custom ROMs. There is much more customizability on a custom ROM than on a stock one. Performance is another huge plus. It allows my device to work at a higher level than normal.

Thanks! Do you mind if I quote you in the paper?
Many, many Att upgrades ago, I was researching new phone options to grow beyond BlackBerry. Came down to iPhone and the captivate. When I came across XDA, the decision was easy -once I understood what Android had to offer a geek like me, iPhone was out of the question.
Soft-bricked the cappy the first night I had it. Never looked back

Actually, I have a section on the risk involved and why people would continue with it; would you say you had enough confidence in your computer-literate abilities that you weren't overtly worried about a hard-brick or that you really had no idea but you were aware of the benefits and wanted them no matter what.

Nail on the head. I understood what benefits came with the territory, but had no prior experience with Android or Linux. Although I am very literate in Android now, it's really just a hobby. Although fun, I see no considerable gain from my flashing and modding activities (aside from a performance perspective, usability and reliability at par, or less than oem)

Same question as the first guy; mind if I quote you?
Don't mind at all.
I do it for the chance to prove myself wrong there are many things that I am not familiar with however on Xda has giving me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and I understand that every new person newcomer new developer anybody starts off starts Step 1 and in this community it makes it possible to be a level 1 and still be great I flash ROM to flash ROM I like the uniqueness I like the capabilities I like the ability to know that I have no boundaries.

I first flashed because i was bored with the stock rom. Sense then it's become addictive, if i twick tjis or that will i get better performance or better battery. What roms run smoothly. Gets my heart racing every time because i know one little screw up and the phone is dead.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I started flashing and rooting because I love to tinker and modify, I've done cars, computers, etc. I started porting and playing with source because of my inherent need to learn to know what makes things tick and because I wanted to give back to the community that taught me.
As far as when I started I wasn't ever worried I have a strong IT background and I did tons upon tons of research in understanding the processes, the risks, and the rewards. I'm of the do it right the first time or don't bother mindset so anything I do I understand.
Yes I allow quoting

From the first day I got my first android phone I started to root it and find ways of better the performance since I noticed battery was really bad on stock. Xda educate me starting from the simple things to more complex like modding, installing all kind of custom roms, fixing softbricks on my skyrocket. I was even induced to learn some Linux coding. I install as triboot Ubuntu, win 7 and wind 8. My wife and mi daughter have iPhone each. Mi wife has an iPad and mi son has an iPod and with all the pressure at home I stick to my android because of the versatility.

I was a hard core BlackBerry user until it seemed like they stop making the effort to keep up with Apple/Android so I jumped ship. I didn't like the Apple interface and Android looked interesting. The Skyrocket was my first Android phone and my only up to this day(played with many others).
I was on stock GB for a long time before I even knew rooting existed. I looked into root, read many post on xda and other forums, and soft bricked my phone 4 times over the weekend until I got it right. Since then I'm slowly becoming a flashaholic. I mostly flash for the endless customizations and performance tweaks. Flashing roms is also a great way to stay up to date without spending $200-600 on the latest phones.

The reason I chose Android was, ironically, choice. I had spent two years using apple iPhones, and it had left a bitter taste in my mouth, in that you had what you had. As a rebellious soul, I felt hindered. The "take what we give you" principal began to anger me. After my iPhone 4 crapped out, I called AT&T and ordered my Skyrocket. Two days later, my electronic world changed. Root, roms, and the developers behind them continually creating new and more useful modifications at a pace that was hard to beleive. The devs commitment to the community, in addition to a global company (Google) that was actually encouraging these things was akin to watching the wheel being invented. A complete difference in night and day. How could it get better? Well, three months ago, it did. I ordered a Nexus 7. Out of nowhere, providers and the regular and sometimes driver restrictive device makers were out of the picture as well. It was now Google, myself and xda. I can now decide how my device will be used. I alone will determine how my experience will unfold, with the blessing of the company who created it. I work very hard for my money. And for the first time, I actually feel that I fully own the devices that I purchased. You rent an iPhone. You own an Android.

I'm an old computer guy... It's always been about 'bigger, better, faster'. When the 'smart phones' came out, I figured I could reprogram them. They seemed to be tiny, Linux based computers. While researching my project, I found XDA... A whole bunch of folks with the same idea.
I'm now retired, (which is really cool but you can get incredibly bored)... SO, I tweak my phones for fun. My son broke his HTC OneX so we had to take it to AT&T to get a replacement. The sales person saw my Skyrocket with JB on it when I answered a text from my bud (JellyBean is not officially available for the skyrocket yet)... EVERY person in the store HAD to see my phone. Even the manager came out to look. Rather than tell me my warranty was void, they all loved it. The only question the manager asked is if I know how to return it to stock (in case I needed warranty work done) THAT'S why I do it... Bigger, better, faster... & the 'WOW' factor. On a side note, I've made several new friends AND I've learned a LOT about coding and such. I've always been cursed with not only needing to know HOW something works but also the need to know WHY it's got to be that way.
As far as the 'flaming' & 'bashing' goes, that's all part of the camaraderie & tomfoolery that goes on in any group. For those who do it in a non constructive manner, no offense is ever taken on my part. Karma WILL take its toll... LOL
Good luck with the paper. I'd love to read the finished product.
There's an old adage among us old 'bikers' that also applies to this question: "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand"
I have a 12 year old sister and she's not really "normal"
She's a bit slow in social terms and not much of a fast learner. Her father bought her a laptop for Christmas and I was really wanting to get her every Friday and just show her some tricks and tips and help her with her homework. Would be nice to influence her in some way because I believe she really needs it.
But I'm not much of a teacher when it comes to technology. I can do just about anything technically but I can't really explain even how to stop "Do you want this to be your default browser" popups to people who aren't so tech savvy.
What should I do? I've already showed her a YouTube series to watch for "Beginning with Windows 7" or something but she still doesn't really understand. I got it to where she can text me through Gmail but I still have to go up there a few times and click on my name because she doesn't understand how to open the chat window back up.
Any ideas? She doesn't really have a good computer. I couldn't even get those cheap "iSpy" games at Walmart to run stable. I plan to show her how to use Google and Wikipedia for school but what's something fun for a 12 year old girl? Besides Facebook. I doubt her Father would allow that.

Really? I never watch the news anymore. They dramatize serious subjects and it just ticks me off.
But yeah, I figured I could spend more time with her. She really has no one to really teach her anything, no offense to our parents. But she's getting to the age where I think she should consider taking things like education more seriously. I dropped out and getting into college was hell. My older Brother graduated but is nothing but a labor slave. Her Father and our Mother has their issues as well so she really has no role model. I think I should be more involved so if she does want to do something with her life, she doesn't have to go down the hard path like I have.

The minimum age for Facebook is 13 I thought so it may not be appropriate for her. And if by not "normal" you mean she's developmentally disabled her actual age she acts might even be younger than 12 and she would be vulnerable to predators on Facebook and other social media sites so be careful there. Opening her up to the world of the internet might not be a good call if you don't have appropriate parental guards in place on the pc she's using. Predators look for kids just like your sister, the most vulnerable are the easiest prey. I would at the least only let her on-line supervised by an adult and make sure she can't get on-line by herself.
And you can only teach her as much as you know. So the best bet is to learn more yourself and then you will be a better teacher. I have grown adults at work who have used pc's for at least the last 18 years and they still ask me do the simplest of tasks for them so she may never figure it all out. Turning it on and playing a game may be all she can do, hell that's all my boss can do.

Does she have any interest in programming by some chance? Or the general concept of it (being able to tell computers what to do)?
Could try learning some Java/Android coding (for Android coding, probably want to learn some Java first). Seeing example code you written actually run might be pretty cool

Was actually thinking of that but I haven't really read anything about it besides commercials ? Does it "it just works" or is it complicated?
I think I could show her a few things. But I really don't know what she likes. She has like a billion pets but that doesn't really relate to teaching her how to use a computer.

I meant to post in XDA General but since I have this app to default to my favorites and Nexus 4 General is all that's there, I reckon it bounced me back here when creating a topic.
I apologize, but yes this is intended for XDA General.
I was shopping around last night and this morning and I'm thinking of getting her a used iPod from GameStop to play games with and stuff. Really the issue is that she's growing up and everybody still babies her like her 10 year old sister. I think the laptop is the only thing she's really proud of as her room is piled with dolls and Barbie's. The iPod is only $80 and maybe a $20 iTunes gift card. I don't know what music she likes. She doesn't even know who Justin Bieber or One Direction is.
