I have a 12 year old sister and she's not really "normal"
She's a bit slow in social terms and not much of a fast learner. Her father bought her a laptop for Christmas and I was really wanting to get her every Friday and just show her some tricks and tips and help her with her homework. Would be nice to influence her in some way because I believe she really needs it.
But I'm not much of a teacher when it comes to technology. I can do just about anything technically but I can't really explain even how to stop "Do you want this to be your default browser" popups to people who aren't so tech savvy.
What should I do? I've already showed her a YouTube series to watch for "Beginning with Windows 7" or something but she still doesn't really understand. I got it to where she can text me through Gmail but I still have to go up there a few times and click on my name because she doesn't understand how to open the chat window back up.
Any ideas? She doesn't really have a good computer. I couldn't even get those cheap "iSpy" games at Walmart to run stable. I plan to show her how to use Google and Wikipedia for school but what's something fun for a 12 year old girl? Besides Facebook. I doubt her Father would allow that.

Is she really your sister? In the OP you say she's your sister yet when you refer to what should be your father you always say "her father" what gives?

Really? I never watch the news anymore. They dramatize serious subjects and it just ticks me off.
But yeah, I figured I could spend more time with her. She really has no one to really teach her anything, no offense to our parents. But she's getting to the age where I think she should consider taking things like education more seriously. I dropped out and getting into college was hell. My older Brother graduated but is nothing but a labor slave. Her Father and our Mother has their issues as well so she really has no role model. I think I should be more involved so if she does want to do something with her life, she doesn't have to go down the hard path like I have.

The minimum age for Facebook is 13 I thought so it may not be appropriate for her. And if by not "normal" you mean she's developmentally disabled her actual age she acts might even be younger than 12 and she would be vulnerable to predators on Facebook and other social media sites so be careful there. Opening her up to the world of the internet might not be a good call if you don't have appropriate parental guards in place on the pc she's using. Predators look for kids just like your sister, the most vulnerable are the easiest prey. I would at the least only let her on-line supervised by an adult and make sure she can't get on-line by herself.
And you can only teach her as much as you know. So the best bet is to learn more yourself and then you will be a better teacher. I have grown adults at work who have used pc's for at least the last 18 years and they still ask me do the simplest of tasks for them so she may never figure it all out. Turning it on and playing a game may be all she can do, hell that's all my boss can do.

Does she have any interest in programming by some chance? Or the general concept of it (being able to tell computers what to do)?
Could try learning some Java/Android coding (for Android coding, probably want to learn some Java first). Seeing example code you written actually run might be pretty cool
What about voice recognition software like Dragon? It could be fun for her and also help her with technology?

Was actually thinking of that but I haven't really read anything about it besides commercials ? Does it "it just works" or is it complicated?
I think I could show her a few things. But I really don't know what she likes. She has like a billion pets but that doesn't really relate to teaching her how to use a computer.

I have no idea if it is complex or not, try their website... good luck with helping your sister.

Excuse me.. This is Nexus 4 general thread. Here you cant discuss or ask for help regarding grooming your siblings.
This thread is meant for general talk on NEXUS 4 and related to it.
I am not being rude but just clearing things. Sorry if u gt hurt.

I've moved this thread to the General Discussion area... If you have somewhere else in mind, simply press the report button in the OP and list where you would like it to be.
I meant to post in XDA General but since I have this app to default to my favorites and Nexus 4 General is all that's there, I reckon it bounced me back here when creating a topic.
I apologize, but yes this is intended for XDA General.
I was shopping around last night and this morning and I'm thinking of getting her a used iPod from GameStop to play games with and stuff. Really the issue is that she's growing up and everybody still babies her like her 10 year old sister. I think the laptop is the only thing she's really proud of as her room is piled with dolls and Barbie's. The iPod is only $80 and maybe a $20 iTunes gift card. I don't know what music she likes. She doesn't even know who Justin Bieber or One Direction is.

I recently gave my son my Toshiba Thrive tablet and I'd like to be able to snoop on him to keep him honest. What Im looking for is like a vnc server for the tablet adn a viewer for my phone. I am not opposed to purchasing apps but I need to know what folks are having success with before I purchase. I tried droidvnc on the tablet and that was an immediate FC...Ive had good luck with androidvnc connecting to windows machines running realvnc server though...
Anyone mess around with this?
Found the solution..
I installed vnc_server on the tablet and installed androidvnc on my phone...and everything works fine. I did try all other options nd this is the only that seemed to work..and cross compatible as well. You also have control of th e remote device if needed.
Before anything else, how old is your son?

So you want to spy your son on his tablet?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
In a nutshell, yes. There is no way (that I am aware of) to effectively block content and he also has a time limit with it. The tablet was a gift for a technical mobile development camp he is attending and I'd like him to get some interest in mobile development. I realize that he will also download a bunch of games (which he has) to play and thats fine but I also realize there are a number of unsavory apps that I would prefer him not get into. I'd also like to be able make sure he is abiding by our (my wife and I) time restrictions for game time.
So a simple yes or no to the question would suffice.
Just trust your son, talk to him and be honest to him. Tell him that he shouldn't misuse his new Toshiba, and that the fun is over when you find out that he does bad things on it. You can control the filtering under the settings in the Play Store. If you wouldn't be able to trust your own son, go find a life or something. Sorry for me being honest, but it is just what I think about it. This how it goes in the Netherlands by the way, your parents usually trust you. And I'm 15 years old if you would like to know, and my parents trust me as well, and my parents have the same rule for my iPad. If I misuse it, it's not mine anymore. Think about what I just wrote.

I understand your point and respect it, however, I have caught my son and his friends viewing inappropriate material on one of my computers before (viewing my windows machine with vnc on my T-Mob G1) and I'd like to try to prevent it in the future. I just don't know of any droid to droid server/viewers.
When you are a parent, you may understand my position a little better....or maybe not.
I will check into the content filtering in the play store as I didn't think of that though.

I have been thinking of messing with the hosts file on the tablet but then I'd have to find a list of suspect/inappropriate domains to redirect to localhost. That with the content filtering in the play store, and maybe some blocking at the router might render vnc completely un-needed.

Tip:
1. Download fing on play store
2. Scan your network
3. You should be able to find an internet adress, copy it to your browser and browse to it.
4. You should be able to change some router settings, but don't know what exactly, as I don't know what kind of router you've got.
Hope it helped!

Just wondering...
In my opinion, some thoughts should light your mind.
1) if you don't trust your son, why did you give the tablet to him?
No point for that since you don't trust what he may be doing with such thing.
2) if you trust him enought to give him the tablet, no reason for trying to spy and control what he does with it
3) if he did something wrong after you have given it to him, could simply ground him and take the tablet back to make him feel how wrong he did
4) as unnpropriate content i suppose that you caught him in some kind of porn (that is the first thought) sites or similar stuff. In that way, i would talk to him seriously and explain what we can call "facts of life" in clean and clear way. No fancy words, no fairy stories, just simple words (a pe**s is what it is) and so on, and end up by telling him he is taking a new chance with his previledges, such as the tablet, etc
5) i'm not a boy anymore. I was once (lol). I have adult sons and grand sons. Discipline is needed even more nowdays, but also keep the faulse puritans away because life is bich enough and no need for us to make it worse
Sorry, no lessons here, just a few thoughts.
By the way. Are you sure those are the reasons you want to spy him???

To give a bit more clarity to the situation, I trust my son to an extent. why did I give him a tablet? I am trying to get him interested in something constructive. He isn't into sports but he has expressed interest in psuedo programming via MIT's scratch and the like. I installed AIDE on the thrive so he's all set up. We have already explained the birds and the bees. We didn't catch him watching porn but rather collegehumor and funnyordie and 4chan so its a bit more mature than I feel a 12 year old is ready for.
None of this actually matters in answering the original question though.
Thanks for those that offered suggestions and I will look elsewhere for answers to my original question.

You don't need to explain your parenting methods to anyone. You have the ultimate responsibility to raise him, and if holding him accountable by monitoring his tablet activity is what you deem necessary, then you do it.

Ok, so this is my problem. Today when I came back from school (High School) I found out my infuse wasn't in the backpack slot it should be. I remember seeing it in my backpack at school in my locker, but then on the bus, I couldn't seem to find it.
I'm pretty sure rather one of the students busted into my locker using a key (teachers have keys that can open any locker) which they used to open my locker, or that the person with the locker next to me has found out me combination and has told it to a lot of students.
I am very concerned that they will screw with my phone, but I have an android pattern security on, so I doubt that.
What should I do? Should I call the school and tell them that I think someone stole my phone and give them a list of people who I think stole it? Or try to interogate them myself?
Please help! I love my infuse.
P.S. I've checked AT&T's website and I couldn't find the Infuse. So I'm thinking of ending my contract or terminating it so they can't text any of my contacts.
First tell your parents...and you can have ATT suspend your line...and they can kill that sim card...unless you have insurance...your at a loss....idk
But you can bring it to the school attention...
If you don't see your phone on you're acct when you log in...they prob took your Sim out...
I've already called the school but they didn't answer. I'm going to tell the dean of the school when I get to school tomorrow. I've already told my mom and she said to tell the school. I'm just trying to consider my options. If I can't find it or my friend has it and has reset everything, then I think my mom will be nice enough to get me a new phone.
Yeah...I wouldn't interrogate the people them selfs...if you don't know who did it for sure you could be questioning the wrong person...and if you do that then they probably won't like you...
Plus people may think you don't trust anyone...and if you do question the right person...what's gonna get him/her to admit it?
How ever I would defently inform the school...and give then a list of people you suspect...you should always let the authorities know (in this case the school) ...there are some crazy people out there...

Thank you all! I've found the culprit (Long story prank) so the person who stole my phone's best friend spilled the beans. I have the text on my mom's go-phone (Very small and simple) and I will hopefully be getting the [email protected] suspended until school ends or at least get him grounded. Thank you for the options and I have suspended my AT&T account until further notice. I don't think that they can access my phone considering I have a pattern lock on it. Thank you for the support!
Your right, the 11th graders in my school aren't the smartest. But I'm Asian (Not to be stereotype or racist) and so are most of my friends and we know how to unlock phones without software (Hardware), pick- locks, and even create our own roms (I don't know how, but my friend ***** has created an HTC Vivid rom). I know they can't access anything for sure, considering I have the pattern lock (Like I've mentioned before). I hope it's still in 1 piece and still has that big ass crack right through the middle :/

Idk what highschoolers you grew up with...but im a highschooler growing up in the golden age of technology...most highschool kids know the basics about phones...power off=stealth, no sim=no longer connected to original account/service provider...doesn't take much thinking to figure that out...and highschool is full of thieves...what have they got to lose? There under age so they suffer no legal consequences...only school consequences...sure highschooler do a lot of dumb things...but they are no stranger when it comes to basic tech skills...

Lol...this will be my last reply on this subject as I don't wanna argue...but you won't end up in juvy for stealing a phone at school...unless you commit a serious crime like assault with a weapon or something along those lines, no matter what you do at school you will not end up in juvy...school takes responsibilities and deals with consequences...trust me I've seen tons of kids steal stuff and get caught...do they go to juvy no-if its a first time the just get suspended for a few days...second time expelled...authorities are never involved so they never go to juvy...
Now if they were to steal from somewhere that wasn't a school like a store or a random guy on the street then sure they have the chance of going to juvy...but if its done in school there's pretty much nothing to worry about as long as your not afraid of suspension...trust me on this...although I never did any of this I did used to hang around the wrong people who constantly stole stuff...so I've seen first hand what happens...and even when they steal from a store...they typically contact the school not the authorities...I actually know someone who stole an iPad right from the apple store...caught him on survelance and they just contacted the school not the authorities...so he got suspended for stealing a $600 product...
And then they go to court before getting sent to juvy...and most times they just get a big fine instead of going to juvy...
Even if they do go to juvy...they don't care as it doesn't stay on your record like jail does...once your a certain age (can't remember it...but I think it may be 20) all juvy records of you are no longer kept...
Most of the kids who steal actually kinda wanna get in trouble...they use it as rep, like they don't want to get caught but if they do then its just rep for them and their proud of it...
Anyways...like I said that would be my last reply...I don't wanna argue, and both our reply are not contributing to the ops problem that sounds like he has solved as he knows who has his phone...
Sooo...I hope everyone has a nice day

Lol it sure did get off topic in here.
Every school is different. I went to a bad school at the time. Authorities were always involved. A serious example, my friend stole the substitute teacher's laptop. He got suspended. Brought to the station for some reason. Fined. And had a court date. Taught him a lesson.

Haha, I like that explanation a lot better. I was looking at it from an iFan's POV I guess, thinking about how the same commercial shows lack of creativity = copying apple.
Which leads me to the question, if apple's supposed to be all about innovation, creativity, and new ideas, what's up with republishing the same device every year with only like three new features?

Dude, if you had the following that Apple does, that is all they need to release to get most of the people to upgrade. Their stock went thru the roof due to this phone coming out on Friday. Besides, only including a couple of features make it easy on them. I would be willing to bet my last dollar that there is an iPhone 6 already being tested with a few new features.
I wouldn't have one of their iPhones personally, but, I do own a MacBook Pro. It is a great machine but still overpriced IMHO.

Seems to me Apple spent very little time with their development team and too much time with their Lawyers teams.

Heck yeah, I am sure there is already an iPhone 6 with NFC and simultaneous voice and LTE on Sprint and Verizon. Apple does not need to do anything for the next year except collect money from the puppets and watch to see what other great things Android will come up with to put in the iPhone 6s.
Also, the reason no one can sue Apple and win is because then the jury and judges won't be able to buy their own iPhone 5 and why would they want to ruin their own lives like that.
I actually think Apple was really nice to their customers this time around. They could have sold millions of iPhones with only adding the new super thunder and lightning digital cable and the super mini sim card. Look at all the other features they threw in on top of that. You go on with your bad self Apple!
iPhone owners are some lucky SOB's! They can even see 5 days in their calendar app now. If that was me I would have saved that feature for the iPhone 6. Apple is way to nice.
Hah! They got the whole 4 inches of Apple's... generosity.

I am reading articles of how innacurate Apple's mapping program is, but they say it does look pretty.
Isn't that what Apple is all about, making things pretty but keeping them dumb?
Plus, isn't pretty and dumb something every guy wants in a phone? Now we know why Apple is so succesfully! They have found the key to success. Make a phone like a typical guy wants his women. lol
And then why do the women buy the phone, well becuase they can relate. haha

It's not sad, It's genius... It can be red at so many levels it's not even funny!
First of all they are passing the message that one year later things haven't changed... same Apple fanatics, same Apple's company policies and strategies, same crappy ass backward products.... while Samsung keeps coming up with high quality and technologically advanced products...
Another message you can read if you will is that Samsung focuses on improving their phones instead of focusing on making new commercials.....
It is not usually a good idea to recycle a commercial... there are some exceptions... this is one.
Awesome
Not funny, but makes me wonder what the iphone 5 uses for glass...

i like this quote by her
"best part is since you already used these features on other devices for a few years now, you'll already know how to use them"
Hi Guys. I was wondering if there is any apps or method I could use to (block incoming) {know how to do this and out going calls and even mms if possible. I have this phone rooted and and running cm7. Its acctually a HTC inspire. However you guys in the HOX forum are my family
Reason behind this is my daughter is getting [email protected] grades. I think it is important in this day for a teenager to have comunications for emergency. I'd like to know how I can limit her from usage. ATT wants to charge me 5 bucks a month to do this.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
I never understood the rational behind doing something like that. Do you honestly think denying her the ability to use a phone is going to motivate her to spending her time actually studying? I know I wouldn't.
Sent from my HTC One XL
Rational is for every action there is a reaction. Good grades are required to have a cell phone. Bad grades = no cell phone.
Or choice if you like? Choose to have bad grades = choose to not have a cell.
I've taken it away. But would like her to have the opportunity in emergency to contact essential persons.

I guess I don't view negative reinforcement as an effective solution. Granted, I'm not a parent but I was more recently a teenager with bad grades. Well... Not that recent but you get the idea. I certainly don't mean to tell you how to raise your children and think I might be overstepping my bounds.
Anyway... I you can still dial 911 if you take the SIM card out on a lot of phones. She won't be able to call you but could still use the phone for emergency use only. Dunno of an app to do what you're asking unfortunately.

I understand you position. I was there once also. Everyone needs structure. Like android you need a breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. We try and structure Our enforcement like the society that they will eventually have to live in. Choice is the problem, and choice is the solution. There are good choices that have good outcomes and not so good choices..... you get the point, I hope. I also thought about my ten year old who has a galaxy phone. I don't want her calling anyone but family. We need a kiddie ROM

Don't let anyone tell you how to parent, only you know what will and won't work on your kids. Good on you for being an active parent, regardless of how you choose to do it
Also, rationale, not rational.
I'm just speaking from my experience as a child... I'm 17 now... My parents don't believe in grounding or taking anything away on that note... I think that's the way to go I believe when parents take stuff away you want to do worse to piss them off... I've gotten caught stealing(I'm sorry) smoking weed.. all they give me is a slap on the wrist...I have a 4.3 GPA taking intense classes and having the freedom and that makes me hapyy and want to work harder ...just my two cents ..everyone has their own beliefs though

My kids have "my" retard gene.(hence my bad spelling that Bob pointed out) They have to work hard to get good grades. When I got custody of my older two from my ex. They were both in special education, 3 years behind. Its been a lot of hard work to get them caught up in school. I just want them to succeed. If any of you have better ideas for consequences? I'll run it by my daughter and see if she's OK with it. Like I said she picks the poison.

Letting your girl "pick her destiny" is good, at least I think so. I'm 20 year old now, and when I was getting in trouble in school and what not my parents would discipline as they saw fit. I was being extremely dumb and thought it was cool to do drugs(weed) but, because I was in soccer and working my way towards a soccer scholarship... My parent's didn't do a whole lot, I just got teh truck taken away from me for a few weeks, and I had to tell my coach if i ever wanted to get my keys back. He is like a second father to me, and he kept getting on me when I messed up at practice. I'll never forget certain moments at practice either... It was absolute hell but, I've never touched that stuff since. I've carried a 4.0 through my senior year, and currently have a 3.6 in my soph year of college. Scholarship is almost up, and now I'm looking to join the military. I can't thank my parents enough for the way they handled that. Most f the people that I have hung out with in high school are now dealers/arrested for possession with intent to distribute/pregnant... That list could go on forever.

To each his own. To me, what that stuff did to me, was bad. I say bad... Be cause it hurt me on the field. I am a gk, and it messed with my reactions and split second thinking/decision making. It effects people differently. One of my long time friends got arrested for possession with intent to distribute. It messed with my conditioning BAD. Before, I was able to run a mile in just over 7 minutes, for my body type that's pretty good. I am 5'10" 195#. My time slowly started to decrease... I look back and I will never be able to thank my parents and my coach enough.

Experimentation is different than using, in my eyes. If I ever have kids, I say that because my little cousins are natural living birth control, I wouldn't scold them for being a teenager but like you said, I wouldn't let it run/ruin their lives.

Sheesh this was a total waste of 5 minutes of my time. From the sidekick using a Mac book during an Apple rant to the talking head prick who does not know Tunisia, Egypt, and Syria from Iran.

Apple > Microstain imo..
Apple is for the person who wants a piece of hardware that WORKS and doesn't break.
I have nothing against apple. If I have the choice of using Windows or using Mac, I'll probably choose a Mac. While I don't like the iPhone, as many people here don't, 98% of people who aren't geeks like us and who just want a smartphone that does what they believe what a smartphone should do, then who am I to say what they should get. Now, I always recommend people to get Android devices, yes, but I'm not going to be a d*** about it. I honestly see no difference from a person who uses an iPhone and someone who uses an unrooted Android phone. They both just want a phone that works.

Didn't mean to make you upset about it. That's what I found hilarious about it. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
His rant is a little off. He goes off about Apple, but really misses the points on why the company and its products are bad for the current technology market.
Apple isn't bad because they make over priced and locked down products, it's the persons choice if they want to purchase said products or not. Where Apple goes bad is trying to patent everything (including things they didn't come up with) and sue the competition if anything even comes close to something "they own" forcing other companies to find ways around all their patents.
Competition helps bring new technology to life as each company tries to out do the other. Apple doesn't want to compete, they want to stop other companies from being able to bring their product to the market which in turn forces technological progress to slow down.
Sell your over priced and locked down products to the people that want them, but don't take away my choices so I am forced to buy your over priced and locked down products.

The "it just works" argument, in my mind, is a valid one. Yes, most cellphones can call and text without issue, but it's about the simplicity as a whole. While all of the options to mess about with is great for us, I feel as though the average person only needs phone, text, camera, browser, and games--- and for those to work great. Even if they had the option for more, would they use it? Take a look at many average person's android phone. It is a complete mess- millions of notifications, status bar completely filled, probably a malware app on there or two. All of those things lead to instability. I just think that iOS is more average person proof.

In that case im talking about OSX > Windoze.
In the phone sense, apple is for people who want a great phone that works fine out of the box, and doesn't really "need" to be unlocked/jailbroken.
Now anyone running android that doesn't root should just get an iPhone in my honest opinion
If you don't root your android phone, it too "just works."
I have both an iPhone and an android phone, and I'm really happy having both. I prefer the iPhone for games and movies, and I use the android for produtivity. I know alot of people with this setup and its becoming more and more common.

I don't know anybody with an iphone and an android phone for that purpose. Come to think of it, the only people I know with two phones are people with their personal and work devices. If I wanted a setup similar to that it would be an android and an ipad. Cheaper and more real estate for gaming. Seems like a lot of money to have two phones even if you are switching the sim card between both.
I suppose a reason could be is that you are feeling in a gaming mood when you leave your house and don't want to lug two devices with you. Or you are going to a meeting and don't want to lug two devices. Still though, ipad is cheaper and more real estate.
