[Q] Block calls incoming & outgoing & off topic parenting discussion :) - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi Guys. I was wondering if there is any apps or method I could use to (block incoming) {know how to do this and out going calls and even mms if possible. I have this phone rooted and and running cm7. Its acctually a HTC inspire. However you guys in the HOX forum are my family
Reason behind this is my daughter is getting [email protected] grades. I think it is important in this day for a teenager to have comunications for emergency. I'd like to know how I can limit her from usage. ATT wants to charge me 5 bucks a month to do this.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I never understood the rational behind doing something like that. Do you honestly think denying her the ability to use a phone is going to motivate her to spending her time actually studying? I know I wouldn't.
Sent from my HTC One XL

Rational is for every action there is a reaction. Good grades are required to have a cell phone. Bad grades = no cell phone.
Or choice if you like? Choose to have bad grades = choose to not have a cell.
I've taken it away. But would like her to have the opportunity in emergency to contact essential persons.

I guess I don't view negative reinforcement as an effective solution. Granted, I'm not a parent but I was more recently a teenager with bad grades. Well... Not that recent but you get the idea. I certainly don't mean to tell you how to raise your children and think I might be overstepping my bounds.
Anyway... I you can still dial 911 if you take the SIM card out on a lot of phones. She won't be able to call you but could still use the phone for emergency use only. Dunno of an app to do what you're asking unfortunately.

I understand you position. I was there once also. Everyone needs structure. Like android you need a breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. We try and structure Our enforcement like the society that they will eventually have to live in. Choice is the problem, and choice is the solution. There are good choices that have good outcomes and not so good choices..... you get the point, I hope. I also thought about my ten year old who has a galaxy phone. I don't want her calling anyone but family. We need a kiddie ROM

Try that in conjunction with some sort of call blocker.. allow only your number and wife's etc. Then password protect the app, password protect the uninstall apps and settings so she can't bypass anything

She is 15 you have to be 16 to drive in my state.
My wife and I let them pic the consequences for their actions.
She picked the cell cause she didn't want to be grounded.
I hope you guys don't think I'm some sort of Nazi parent.
Hell my older boy had illegal substance in his room and only got grounded for two weeks. Kept all his Xbox, phone. He has a 3.7 GPA and does is chores though.
Absolutegrim should he nominated to xda president! You are all ways so helpful and know your sh!t. Thanks!

Don't let anyone tell you how to parent, only you know what will and won't work on your kids. Good on you for being an active parent, regardless of how you choose to do it
Also, rationale, not rational.

I'm just speaking from my experience as a child... I'm 17 now... My parents don't believe in grounding or taking anything away on that note... I think that's the way to go I believe when parents take stuff away you want to do worse to piss them off... I've gotten caught stealing(I'm sorry) smoking weed.. all they give me is a slap on the wrist...I have a 4.3 GPA taking intense classes and having the freedom and that makes me hapyy and want to work harder ...just my two cents ..everyone has their own beliefs though

@omario your a self motivated person. I can tell.
My kids have "my" retard gene.(hence my bad spelling that Bob pointed out) They have to work hard to get good grades. When I got custody of my older two from my ex. They were both in special education, 3 years behind. Its been a lot of hard work to get them caught up in school. I just want them to succeed. If any of you have better ideas for consequences? I'll run it by my daughter and see if she's OK with it. Like I said she picks the poison.

Letting your girl "pick her destiny" is good, at least I think so. I'm 20 year old now, and when I was getting in trouble in school and what not my parents would discipline as they saw fit. I was being extremely dumb and thought it was cool to do drugs(weed) but, because I was in soccer and working my way towards a soccer scholarship... My parent's didn't do a whole lot, I just got teh truck taken away from me for a few weeks, and I had to tell my coach if i ever wanted to get my keys back. He is like a second father to me, and he kept getting on me when I messed up at practice. I'll never forget certain moments at practice either... It was absolute hell but, I've never touched that stuff since. I've carried a 4.0 through my senior year, and currently have a 3.6 in my soph year of college. Scholarship is almost up, and now I'm looking to join the military. I can't thank my parents enough for the way they handled that. Most f the people that I have hung out with in high school are now dealers/arrested for possession with intent to distribute/pregnant... That list could go on forever.

To each his own. To me, what that stuff did to me, was bad. I say bad... Be cause it hurt me on the field. I am a gk, and it messed with my reactions and split second thinking/decision making. It effects people differently. One of my long time friends got arrested for possession with intent to distribute. It messed with my conditioning BAD. Before, I was able to run a mile in just over 7 minutes, for my body type that's pretty good. I am 5'10" 195#. My time slowly started to decrease... I look back and I will never be able to thank my parents and my coach enough.

I say played because I had to get knee surgery from soccer over the summer and none months recovery so ill be back in June but I think im done with competitive play... My conditioning did get a bit worse which I can admit to while I was still playing.. as for the arrest I'm truly sorry ..nobody deserves tha for just this...here In california I think u have to 8 g on u to be held up for intent to sell... But I will stop when I have to settle down and be a consistent man in the real world.. I have no doubt you're happy you stopped ..sometimes I wish I didn't do it sometimes I just have that crave to chill out and sit back.. but like u said "to each his own"

Experimentation is different than using, in my eyes. If I ever have kids, I say that because my little cousins are natural living birth control, I wouldn't scold them for being a teenager but like you said, I wouldn't let it run/ruin their lives.

im going to get my teen the droid X.

i want to know if there is a app that i could install on there phone that will let me track them with GPS?? that will tell me there location on my incredible.
does a app like this excest?
What about google location with google latitude that allows you to share your current location?
i will try that. thanks.
Careful relying on Latitude though, it's easy to turn off. Hope he/she doesn't get too smart!
realy? its easy to turn off. is there a app more secret? a app that hides in back ground.?

Does no one else think this is wrong?
As a father myself I can honestly say that this is pretty messed up.
If you don't trust your kid don't let them out the house.
Don't for 1 second think that your "protecting" them. Because your not.
Please excuse me for preaching. I'm not telling you how to raise your kids and don't mean to cause any offence. Its just a subject I feel strongly about.
As a father myself, I don't see how this is wrong.
1.) It's for a teen. Of course you don't trust them. It's the nature of the beast. I was a pretty good kid for the most part, but hell, even I didn't trust myself.
2.) I don't really see it so much as protecting them, but it definitely helps to keep them accountable. And if, "god" forbid, they should go missing, at least you'd have somewhere to start looking. Just because your kid is "trustworthy", doesn't mean the bad guys out there are going to take that into consideration.
If the kid knew about it I don't see a problem (regardless of weather they agree or not). Its the whole hiding it I have a problem with.
Why stop there? You could record all sound heard by the phone aswell.
Good point about them being aware of it. I think the recording audio option would be too invasive.
Sent from my MB300 using XDA App
Keeping tabs on the kid aside, I'd do it just for tracking a $500 piece of hardware. Other kids at school would probably love to have a Droid to play with. As one who had my locker routinely broken in to when I was in high school, I'd defiantly use it on my daughter's device!
well personally i think youve gotta let your kid out from underneath a rock at some point. if he/she is old enough to have a 500 dollar smartphone i would think he wouldnt need tabs kept on him/her.
unless this kids an idiot thats made alot of mistakes id say your just as dumb for buying him/her the phone in the first place.
but im not a parent and im only 18 so what do i know.
If your kid found out about it they would have a hard time trusting you with anything afterwards and it would distance you as a parent. Back in the days without cell phones with gps tracking, i bet you were allowed out of the house without a trace being put on you. This is your kid we are talking about , not a prisoner, trust them a bit and give them some freedom because sooner than later htey will be moving out and you will wish your relationship was closer.

I totally agree.
GPS Tracking is for me a really bad thing, I would hate my parents if they had done that to me !
Even if I have some idea of applications, I won't help you because it's really (for me) a bad idea to do that ^^
There are apps that let you track other phones but I think both phones have to have the app or am I wrong?
I would get your teen the original droid because it has a keyboard (for texting) and I bet the price will drop because of the Droid X. Also the Droid X has a 4.3 in touchscreen, a bad drop means a completely shattered screen.
Morals aside, https://www.wavesecure.com/ is a good app for this, among other things. And yes, it hides itself on the phone pretty well, and is protected with a PIN.
Regarding the ethics, I don't think its right to do without your child's consent. But if you explain it is a security measure I'm sure they'd agree to it if the other option was a £10 crappy Nokia.
As for the issue at hand,... I second wavesecure, its bang on all you need in terms of security....

[RANT] Where is the love Inspire owners!?!

In an attempt to increase my total amount of postings so I can again ask questions and make comments in a developer thread, I took it upon myself to do some community service/ light reading in this general thread thereby building karma and posting some willy-nilly comments here and there.
I then did notice something disturbing ... there is quite a bit of hate out there towards your previous cell phones. Plenty of stories of numerous Captivate warranty exchanges, defective iPhone devices, disappointed Atrix customers who purchased a very gender confused Smartphone computer thingy. All of these comments are generally followed by rather harsh comments to the effect of "can't wait to smash it against the wall, tear it apart, take a hammer to it, etc. etc."
Your old Smartphones really did mean well. Sure it dropped a call here or there, deleted an app, screen stopped working, sent that text to your g.f instead of the flirty co-worker .... whatever what have you. Can you honestly say that you have been a 100% showing up to work every day this past year? Really? Never hungover?
My point in this lengthy rant is that as proud as I am to be a part of what I consider to be the best smartphone that money can currently buy ... in America ... on a carrier I can actually get service from ... please don't be cruel to your displaced retiring smartphone. Instead, explore the forms and really MOD the begezzes (sp) out of it. Consider using it for such things as an angry birds device ... a rainy day phone ... donate to such causes as Cell Phones for Soldiers, shelters for battered women, hell the salvation army (remember to get a receipt ... a donation such is this can be written off a tax return at FULL DEVICE PRICE [No Commitment]- the estimated depreciation based upon length of use ...
Inspire owners Save the Smartphones!!!

I used to have a low end LG Ally on Verizon when i came out about a year ago. Was my first smart phone/android phone. I could never hate that phone. Despite it being low end at the time i wasn't educated on android and it was free. (I'm cheap and couldn't pass up free. "
That phone helped me understand/learn android. It has an almost complete vannilla android. On the outside atleast. The "inside" LG found ways to make the devs go crazy .
But using the Ally for almost a year taught me how/what rooting is, what recoveries, backups, roms, kernels, etc are. Also taught me the almighty adb and new found love for linux and a new found dislike for windows
But i had to leave verizon and the Ally due to some life issues at the time. Had to come to at&t and knew i wanted to experience a "high end" android phone. Dual core and all that hype wasn't important to me so the Atrix was out of the question. I read to many horror stories about the Captivate. Then i came accross the Inspire. It seemed like the perfect fit. Was pretty much what i was looking for in specs and price wise. Win win situation for me. Absolutely love this phone. I can go on and on about it but i wont.
I "recycled" my iphones to my children, as the schools around here are starting to require smart devices in middle-school and I didn't feel like paying for them to "rent" one from the schools. I like the iphone, but the limitations make it a really "dumb" smart phone in comparison to my android.
I still love my Captivate... but when there are better option like the Inspire, will not think twice to jump ship.

I am curious what they could be requiring a smartphone for? At my kids school if they are caught with their phone out during school hours they take them and the third time it is for the balance of the school year or serve in school suspension in exchange for the phone.
I have to say this is the first rant that I loved lol I actually liked my captivate and had a lot of fun with it. There are two captivates still in my house that I play with. I'm just a tech junkie and have to have, or at least try to have lol , the latest out there. I love the Inspire and yes it blows away my Captivates, imo at least. But honestly I really have never complained about my phones. Tech imo is just like that. Next month there will be something that makes inspire owners say that this phone sucks compared to , insert phone name here lol.
Awesome rant my friend

HELP! Lost my Infuse!

Ok, so this is my problem. Today when I came back from school (High School) I found out my infuse wasn't in the backpack slot it should be. I remember seeing it in my backpack at school in my locker, but then on the bus, I couldn't seem to find it.
I'm pretty sure rather one of the students busted into my locker using a key (teachers have keys that can open any locker) which they used to open my locker, or that the person with the locker next to me has found out me combination and has told it to a lot of students.
I am very concerned that they will screw with my phone, but I have an android pattern security on, so I doubt that.
What should I do? Should I call the school and tell them that I think someone stole my phone and give them a list of people who I think stole it? Or try to interogate them myself?
Please help! I love my infuse.
P.S. I've checked AT&T's website and I couldn't find the Infuse. So I'm thinking of ending my contract or terminating it so they can't text any of my contacts.
First tell your parents...and you can have ATT suspend your line...and they can kill that sim card...unless you have insurance...your at a loss....idk
But you can bring it to the school attention...
If you don't see your phone on you're acct when you log in...they prob took your Sim out...
I've already called the school but they didn't answer. I'm going to tell the dean of the school when I get to school tomorrow. I've already told my mom and she said to tell the school. I'm just trying to consider my options. If I can't find it or my friend has it and has reset everything, then I think my mom will be nice enough to get me a new phone.
Yeah...I wouldn't interrogate the people them selfs...if you don't know who did it for sure you could be questioning the wrong person...and if you do that then they probably won't like you...
Plus people may think you don't trust anyone...and if you do question the right person...what's gonna get him/her to admit it?
How ever I would defently inform the school...and give then a list of people you suspect...you should always let the authorities know (in this case the school) ...there are some crazy people out there...

You could borrow someone else's phone and try dialing your number while you're in a group of fellow students. If you hear your ringtone, you know who has it.

Thank you all! I've found the culprit (Long story prank) so the person who stole my phone's best friend spilled the beans. I have the text on my mom's go-phone (Very small and simple) and I will hopefully be getting the [email protected] suspended until school ends or at least get him grounded. Thank you for the options and I have suspended my AT&T account until further notice. I don't think that they can access my phone considering I have a pattern lock on it. Thank you for the support!
Your right, the 11th graders in my school aren't the smartest. But I'm Asian (Not to be stereotype or racist) and so are most of my friends and we know how to unlock phones without software (Hardware), pick- locks, and even create our own roms (I don't know how, but my friend ***** has created an HTC Vivid rom). I know they can't access anything for sure, considering I have the pattern lock (Like I've mentioned before). I hope it's still in 1 piece and still has that big ass crack right through the middle :/

Idk what highschoolers you grew up with...but im a highschooler growing up in the golden age of technology...most highschool kids know the basics about phones...power off=stealth, no sim=no longer connected to original account/service provider...doesn't take much thinking to figure that out...and highschool is full of thieves...what have they got to lose? There under age so they suffer no legal consequences...only school consequences...sure highschooler do a lot of dumb things...but they are no stranger when it comes to basic tech skills...
Sooooo...that's why I never leave my phone in my back pack...its always in my pocket or in my hand....

Lol...this will be my last reply on this subject as I don't wanna argue...but you won't end up in juvy for stealing a phone at school...unless you commit a serious crime like assault with a weapon or something along those lines, no matter what you do at school you will not end up in juvy...school takes responsibilities and deals with consequences...trust me I've seen tons of kids steal stuff and get caught...do they go to juvy no-if its a first time the just get suspended for a few days...second time expelled...authorities are never involved so they never go to juvy...
Now if they were to steal from somewhere that wasn't a school like a store or a random guy on the street then sure they have the chance of going to juvy...but if its done in school there's pretty much nothing to worry about as long as your not afraid of suspension...trust me on this...although I never did any of this I did used to hang around the wrong people who constantly stole stuff...so I've seen first hand what happens...and even when they steal from a store...they typically contact the school not the authorities...I actually know someone who stole an iPad right from the apple store...caught him on survelance and they just contacted the school not the authorities...so he got suspended for stealing a $600 product...
And then they go to court before getting sent to juvy...and most times they just get a big fine instead of going to juvy...
Even if they do go to juvy...they don't care as it doesn't stay on your record like jail does...once your a certain age (can't remember it...but I think it may be 20) all juvy records of you are no longer kept...
Most of the kids who steal actually kinda wanna get in trouble...they use it as rep, like they don't want to get caught but if they do then its just rep for them and their proud of it...
Anyways...like I said that would be my last reply...I don't wanna argue, and both our reply are not contributing to the ops problem that sounds like he has solved as he knows who has his phone...
Sooo...I hope everyone has a nice day

Lol it sure did get off topic in here.
Every school is different. I went to a bad school at the time. Authorities were always involved. A serious example, my friend stole the substitute teacher's laptop. He got suspended. Brought to the station for some reason. Fined. And had a court date. Taught him a lesson.

[OFF TOPIC] Comedy Relief Q&A For The ATRIX 2 Community

Hey gang,
I realize this is probably highly unorthodox for me to do, but after getting an approval (on a "see how this thing goes basis") from Moscow Desire, I've decided that we may all find this thread a place for some 'decompression' and a fun way to maybe get to know others a bit better here within our A2 community.
That said, here is where I'm going with this: In light if recent events -you all know what I'm referring to here- and with some members of our forum being frustrated, impatient, and downright miffed about being bricked, let's use this as a place to get a laugh or two or three with some lighthearted humor.
So, here goes... this is simple. I'll start by asking a question, the next to post will answer my question, and afterwards ask another question that's completely unrelated to mine. We'll continue on, and see how creative, humorous, and random they get!
RULES:
1) Answer the question above your post, then ask another random question!
2) In keeping in line with xda's forum rules, keep it CLEAN! Use of profanity, flaming, stereotyping, or otherwise being a disturbance will cause this thread to be deleted.
3) Only ask questions UNRELATED to "real" issues, concerns, or quandaries. This is NOT a thread to ask questions about unlocking bootloaders, solving bootloops, FXZ'ing, or otherwise.
4) Refer to Rule #2 and #3!
5) This thread is intended for members of the ATRIX 2 community exclusively. If you post here, please be aware of this. The thread has been posted for "us" by "me" and for the purpose of "our" entertainment!
6) Have fun, be polite, and enjoy!
*This will be a contest held with the winner determined by their creativity, randomness of their question, and humor. The winner will receive (a picture of) a DeWALT 1-1/8" SDS Rotary Hammer Drill with Case, an estimated $0.00 USD value!
If you find yourself laughing or having fun, feel free to thank me!

Oh TOTALLY man. Had this happen a few times with my remote. What you got to do is take your remote, hold down power and the channel "up" button, this will get you into the remote boot menu. MAKE SURE YOUR TV IS ON OR YOU WILL LOOP!
After that, install the proper .ZXF file for your model of thermostat (Google this as it depends on make and model) and you should be good to go!
Umm, but hey guys. I heard that if I install THIS in my A2 in place of the dual core that I will get massive speeds!!!! Although, do I need the extended battery for the 121 gigawatts of power it needs? Or do you think I will bootloop due to the massive overclock?
Me love ICS.
Aw man, it spilled on my pants
Oh well, i'll lick it off
Oh I just swallowed i bug on my spilled ICS.
So I tried to root my house, but now my control panel says
Code:
All processes running in services mode
Now I am having rampant appliances turning off and on when they feel like it. Also my refrigerator process just keeps running, and won't stop.
Any ideas, I can't unroot my house because it's core processes might run off too, just like my fridge.
If your refrigerator is running, and you have Prince Albert in a can, you'll need to go get several cases of one-ply toilet paper and haphazardly throw each roll into your neighbor's trees. Next, order seventeen large pizzas and have them delivered to your local congressman's mother-in-law's home. That should do the trick.
Incidentally, I just ate three whole tangerines... what do you suppose is going to happen to me?

Okay, I'll lay off the tangerines for a while...
Question though, I'm riding on down the road in my "Cross Country Journey of Inner Discovery" and of course, the "American Dream" when Donald Rumsfeld hits a moose.
"Maybe we should stop and get a tow truck," says me. "Gosh, that seems pretty excessive," says Donald Rumsfeld. "I mean, was a moose hit? Yes. Do the antlers sticking through the windshield make driving trickier? You bet. But should we just turn around and quit because the road got a little bumpy? I'd say no."
One thing about Donald Rumsfeld that you have to give him credit for is he always cuts through the crap to tell it like it is in his no-nonsense style. I am reminded of this when we hit the second moose.
"Moose happen," says Donald Rumsfeld. "There are moose, and we'll hit 'em. That's the way it goes. We've lost two tires and the brakes. That's life. I'm drunk, legally blind and have been charged with eight counts of vehicular manslaughter in the last three years. Gotta deal with it. Nothing's perfect." "If you think about it the more moose get hit by us, the fewer moose there are to get hit by us!" says me. "I like the way you think," says Donald Rumsfeld.
Donald grabs a beer an misses a pedestrian. Hooray! One of the moose is still alive an kicks at the engine. "Bad moose," says me. "No beer until you stop." Donald Rumsfeld throws an open bottle a Coors at the back seat to put out the fire.
"Are parts of the car on fire? Sure. Would we like them not to be? Of course. Have I gone insane from three decades of snorting military-grade rubber cement? Quite possibly. Do we need everything to be perfect for us to go out on the road? Well, that's absurd," says Donald Rumsfeld. "That's very true," says me. "We cannot make the perfect the enemy of the terrible."
The bridge up ahead is either out or doesn't exist. But if we waited for everything to be perfect before we did stuff, well then would anything ever get done?
Should we press on and risk more "Moosehumps"?

Careful with that! There have been reports of people taking a quantum leap and bootlooping back to the future when using the stock lithium-ion battery.
You might be better off just using some scrap plutonium, a bolt of lightning, or your run-of-the-mill coffee grinder for a power source.
On another note, I've been having trouble hearing dog whistles lately... is my hearing going bad from playing my music too loud? Or are dogs loosing their ability to whistle due to natural selection?

Whiskey will only cause your ATRIX 2 to become belligerent when discussing its drinking habits, come home in the wee hours of the night covered with glitter and smelling of cheap perfume, and running your joint bank account into the ground.
Have you tried giving it Red Bull? This may add the Supercharger script to its unit.d folder and make it much more exciting and fun to be around...

Ideas for a 12 year old girl?

I have a 12 year old sister and she's not really "normal"
She's a bit slow in social terms and not much of a fast learner. Her father bought her a laptop for Christmas and I was really wanting to get her every Friday and just show her some tricks and tips and help her with her homework. Would be nice to influence her in some way because I believe she really needs it.
But I'm not much of a teacher when it comes to technology. I can do just about anything technically but I can't really explain even how to stop "Do you want this to be your default browser" popups to people who aren't so tech savvy.
What should I do? I've already showed her a YouTube series to watch for "Beginning with Windows 7" or something but she still doesn't really understand. I got it to where she can text me through Gmail but I still have to go up there a few times and click on my name because she doesn't understand how to open the chat window back up.
Any ideas? She doesn't really have a good computer. I couldn't even get those cheap "iSpy" games at Walmart to run stable. I plan to show her how to use Google and Wikipedia for school but what's something fun for a 12 year old girl? Besides Facebook. I doubt her Father would allow that.

Really? I never watch the news anymore. They dramatize serious subjects and it just ticks me off.
But yeah, I figured I could spend more time with her. She really has no one to really teach her anything, no offense to our parents. But she's getting to the age where I think she should consider taking things like education more seriously. I dropped out and getting into college was hell. My older Brother graduated but is nothing but a labor slave. Her Father and our Mother has their issues as well so she really has no role model. I think I should be more involved so if she does want to do something with her life, she doesn't have to go down the hard path like I have.

The minimum age for Facebook is 13 I thought so it may not be appropriate for her. And if by not "normal" you mean she's developmentally disabled her actual age she acts might even be younger than 12 and she would be vulnerable to predators on Facebook and other social media sites so be careful there. Opening her up to the world of the internet might not be a good call if you don't have appropriate parental guards in place on the pc she's using. Predators look for kids just like your sister, the most vulnerable are the easiest prey. I would at the least only let her on-line supervised by an adult and make sure she can't get on-line by herself.
And you can only teach her as much as you know. So the best bet is to learn more yourself and then you will be a better teacher. I have grown adults at work who have used pc's for at least the last 18 years and they still ask me do the simplest of tasks for them so she may never figure it all out. Turning it on and playing a game may be all she can do, hell that's all my boss can do.

I meant to post in XDA General but since I have this app to default to my favorites and Nexus 4 General is all that's there, I reckon it bounced me back here when creating a topic.
I apologize, but yes this is intended for XDA General.
I was shopping around last night and this morning and I'm thinking of getting her a used iPod from GameStop to play games with and stuff. Really the issue is that she's growing up and everybody still babies her like her 10 year old sister. I think the laptop is the only thing she's really proud of as her room is piled with dolls and Barbie's. The iPod is only $80 and maybe a $20 iTunes gift card. I don't know what music she likes. She doesn't even know who Justin Bieber or One Direction is.
