App the turn off the screen but not lock - Motorola Atrix 2

Hello everyone,
I have been searching for an app/widget by which I can turn off the screen but not lock it. This is because my device is under a corporate policy that requires a complex password if it is locked. (the lock is enabled after 20 mins of inactivity). The apps that I have tried have all turned off the screen and locked the phone.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Sayantan
PS: Needless to say that all this effort is to save the power button from wearing out!

Sorry, but with a corporate policy, you will not be able to dis-able the lock, on screen turn off, and password on unlock. The only way is to see if your corporate admin is willing to change the policy for you, on your phone, but I would doubt that, considering this is a mobile device connected to a corporate network in some form or fashion.
It is not the apps that do this, but the underlying settings within android that the corporate policy alters.

Thanks Jim.
I actually hooked up to my corporate server only recently, but I've been searching for an app even before that. My screen off timeout is 2 mins and screen lock (pattern & now password) is 20 mins. What I was looking for was to turn off the screen. But every app I found also locked the device and I had to enter the pattern or password. This was even before the policy enforcement.
The app comes in handy when outdoors where you might need to turn screen off immediately after use before pocketing it but not turn on the password.
Thinking of writing one myself now as my power button might already be feeling its age!
Thanks,
Sayantan

Since you want to save your power button, why dont you activate ' volume button wake screen '?
If you're on JB leak the type *#*#6686#*#* in your dialer and it'll take you to a secret laboratory menu. select Volume Wake screen and then you have to press one of the volume buttons to do the same.
Not sure if this works on ICS but you can always try.
Sent from my ME865 using Tapatalk 2

Already have the volume rockr wake by editing the build.prop and key layout files. Was not aware of this menu. Thanks for sharing. But what I am really looking out for is an app/widget which just turns the screen off (similar to screen timeout) but not lock the screen (as in security timeout).

Hi @SMONDAL84,
Have you managed to find/program smth that solved your problem? I'm looking for exactly the same thing for months. I've searched the whole Internet (you'll have to trust me on this one) but all apps and widgets always lock the screen while turning the screen off. I'm no programmer, but I'm suspecting Android does not allow this.
Well, if you ever try to program smth, here's a suggestion: configure your power button to don't lock the screen and make some kind of shortcut that simulates the power button press.
I know it's been years... But please someday come back to this thread and let me know if you ever found anything

Tapping the screen to wake up from standby.

Hello all, I'm new here and I'm also new to the xda world. I just had my Atom few days ago.
I used to use Symbian where I would only need to tap the screen to wake the device so, is it possible to make Xda Atom to wake from standby mode by tapping the screen, instead pressing the "power button"?
Pressing the "power button" few times a day to wake the device could and might wear the button and it won't take long to make it unusable.
I have done my home work as a noob by searching the forum. Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=307481
I do not really mind with the power drop. So, is there any solution to make this possible?
Thank you in advance and any help would be appreciated.
Go to Start>Settings>System>Power >Advanced and untick Turn of device if not used for X minutes.
Now your device will be always on, unless you use the power button, and the screen should just dim when you dont use it after a minute or 2, and come back on when you touch it.
Let us know how it works out.
Surur
Thank you for the hint, Surur. It works, however it's not exactly what I had in mind. By letting it to show the today view all the time, it would take too much.
I was thinking to let the screen to go completely off, but the screen is still active (touch only), or only part of the screen. So, when the device goes to blank or standby, it would wake when I tap on the screen... or some part of the screen if it could help to preserve some power.
In Symbian, I could set the time for the screen to go completely off. And when the screen is completely off, each time I tap on the screen, the screen would go on. And if no input from user, it would go off again, according to the time I set before.
Note: the device does automatic lock, so even if it gets tap by something, the display would show or awake but would not open an app or do something unwanted, until user unlocked it using combination. So, I never need to touch any button with Symbian, completely using screen only.
Is there an application that able to do something similar or better than what Symbian does? I'm even willing to pay for someone to make this kind of program.
I don't know if it's allowed to double posts or not, if not please let me know.
Here is a testimony to back up my point of view regarding the power button:
"Naturally I set it to the power button, but after a while, that button got worn down and stopped "working" so I naturally set it to recognize any other button.
This experience has taught me the hard way, that its a good choice to have (or maybe even a necessity in some cases) that other buttons to wake the unit up in case of situations like this."
Taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315329
So, please someone create an application to allow user to use screen to wake from standby.
Here is what I had in mind:
1. Lock the screen if standby
2. On standby mode. If I tap some part of the screen (some part of screen only to save some batt power), then it would show option to unlock.
3. If I tap but do nothing or do not unlock, it would goes to standby again.
Again, I would pay the good person who's willing to make this kind of application. Or maybe it's already available?

You can try the keylock in the settings, that will not wake your device by tapping the screen, but it will wake up by pressing any key...
Thanks for trying to help, ai6908. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the keylock in the settings, and it still needs button to be pressed.
I do not feel comfortable pressing button. I used p800, using it, Symbian was able to be operated without the need of any button.
Depending on button, it could decrease the value of the mobile, I mean pressing button(s) few times a day would surely wear the button(s) over time. Movable parts are more easily to get broken or wear. And It would decrease the value if the mobile is going to be sold later on. With p800, I could keep the state like new for many years, thanks to the UI that allows us to fully control from the touchscreen alone.
It seems like a Microsoft and mobile manufactures scheme to make user to buy another device when the button goes wear from waking up from standby. I can't believe Windows Mobile depends on the need of button to be operated. I even have to use button to take picture with Atom.
I know many also like to use button, but I believe there are other who do not like or like me. I hope MS is flexible about this like Symbian. Someone could help me on this issue?
Keylock is under settings/system...you can try it, but it is not like the symbian one that you mentioned...
I couldn't find Keylock in the settings/system, maybe it's a separate application. Thanks ai6908 for trying to help me, unfortunately it's not like what I had in mind. If I couldn't find the solution that I want, I would surely use your advice.
Someone told me that the display panel is "connected" with the touch. So when the display is off, the touch capability will be off too.
Because of that, I was thinking maybe an application that would set the backlight to very minimal (so it would make the screen to go blank) after a defined period of time could do the job.
Has someone tried this before? Or is it also not possible?

power button and return to today screen

I have the following little problem with WM6. Every time i press the "power button" on my device, WM6 returns to the today screen. What i really want is, that it stays in the last application which was open before i switched the device off.
This behavior is especially annoying when i use tools like "ScreenOff" which does nothing else but turns the screen off (the programs are running further). This is useful when it comes to mp3 listening or something like that. But when i press the power button to turn the screen on again there is no mp3 playing application but the today screen.
Can anyone tell me where to change that behavior?
whats the today timeout set to in settings->today->items ?
It is activated and set to 8hr.
You need to disable the password lock in Security settings. This will mean that a password will NOT be required to unlock the phone upon restart or after the pre-determined timeout.
With the password lock disabled, every time you power up your phone, it will be at the last application you had open.
I already have the password lock disabled. So that can not be the problem.
If you are using the today screen battery meter there is an option for it to do that. Annoyed the hell out of me till I disabled it.
Thank you, thank you!!!
You made my day

Screen lock/unlock dodgy

I am either going nuts or this is a common isue:
Normally when you tap "lock" on home screen the brightness diminishes and the phone is locked. To unlock, you have to tap "unlock" on the lower left side of the screen, hen you get a message telling you to tap again unlock in the middle of the screen and its unlocked.
Well, my Polaris only does this sequence sometimes. Especially if I let it go in standby for a couple minutes, as soon as I press any key I get another story:
In lower left corner of screen I have the word" cancel". Tapping it doesn't give me another "unlock" button on screen and the phone remains locked. I have to put it in standby from the power button and then try again to get the normal unlock behaviour.
Anyone else experiences this?
Nobody? So everybody's unlock feature works like it should?
Then I think it's reset time for my Polaris....
I personally don't use, the device lock feature... Just the standby, whith the HW buttons off... and it works just fine for me
I have noticed that when you press the central button in the TC, what you describe is what exactly happens. But this happens to me only when I do that. If a tap the screen without touching the button, I have the normal behaviour.
Yes, exactly.
@gnick: if I use the standby with HW keys lock it works ok for me also.
The issue is only with the HTC Home lock feature and the central key

Yes, but very rarely and even then when I press Cancel the normal lock screen resumes and I unlock in the normal way. I have "Do not lock all buttons" selected in the Key Lock settings. Don’t know if this is significant.
2 stages for screen lock?
I use my TC while riding motorcycle, so I want several apps (TomTom, gps tracking [gps.run]), music [was WMP, but now Coreplayer] and TellmeText) running and the screen off so as to save battery power.
If you press the power button when key lock is on it will turn the display completely off, and *most* programs will keep running. TomTom is a notable exception- it stops working, presumably because it can no longer access the gps?. But better behaved/next generation GPS apps such as run.gps continue to run. WMP, bless its pathetic cotton socks, seems to work sometimes!
Are these inconsistecies uinique to my unit, or known quirks?
Anyone suggest a app that will turn the screen off and allow ALL open apps to run, including TomTom?
Thanks
I don't know how you're operating any of the buttons on the TC with riding gloves on!!

anyone got anything more useful to add to what was a serious comment/Q
Man, the battery life sucks on this device So my quest on how to turn the screen completely off and lock the keys properly while running all software (especially GPS based such as TomTom) continues....
Anyone know of a 3rd party app that will do this?
I have not read all 200 pages, but it seems there are mixed results for running S2U2 on the Touch Cruise (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=353008) ? Anyone having success?
Thanks
I know its late but I just saw this and thought I would mention that I managed to over come using TomTom without the device being on. However it doesnt save much on power as the GPS device need power to work.
But I using a simple function I wrote in my application to lock the device using the standard device lock API calls and then rather than switchingthe device into sleep mode (off) I switched it into IDLE mode, which is basically just switching the screen off, the device lock prevents any unwanted button presses.
The power button would just return this back to normal.
I have not yet worked out how to stop the device brightness changing when the screen lock is enabled on the device... :/ Which is my next task.
Ramakin...
well that would be great because even saving having the screen dimmed during lock would help battery life. And, pressing the power button to resume would be MUCH easier than stabbing around at in the sun trying to unlock the screen. It would also make TomTom behave like all other 21C GPS applications, i.e. run on idle.
So, can you send details?
During a recent motorbike trip where I just used TomTom and tracking software (even turned the phone off) I was SHOCKED at how crap the battery life was

Password Protect

Hi guys when I first setup my phone it asked me if I wanted to password protect it and I clicked yes. Now every 3 minutes the phone locks and asks me for my password, this is a good security feature, but its getting annoying. I cant find out where I can change the settings so it locks up every 10 minutes..Please help.
Also...
The button on the top left of the screen that turns the screen on and off, my finger always hits this button when I am typing and it turns off the screen and when I press the button to turn the screen back on it takes me the home screen without saving what I was typing (i.e. a sms or something else)...is there anyways around this?
Thanks a bunch

Hey, to take care of your password issue, go to Start > Settings > Lock and in there you will see the settings on how long your phone will wait to lock again after inactivity (after you type your password). You can also use this area to chang your password. Hope this helps.
As far as your issue with the power button, I'm sorry but I don't have any suggestions.

An app to turn off the screen WITHOUT locking.

Hi All,
I was hoping you guy might be able to help me out.
The LG G3 is awesome, i love being able to turn the screen on and off without using any buttons.
One bit that i think could use some work is that currently, when the screen is on, you can tap the notification bar twice to turn the screen off, however, i find that this doesnt work so well all the time.
I have Nova launcher and i wanted to link a two finger swipe gesture with an app to turn the screen off however...
All the apps on the store only seem to offer you the option to turn the screen off and lock the phone immediately at the same time. Does anyone know of an app that will let me turn the screen off, but NOT lock the phone immediately, and just leave the lock settings to the system defaults.
It seems pretty straight forward but i've tried about 30 apps on the store and all of them only screen off and lock, none allow you to do it without locking the phone immediately.
Any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks for the idea. I just tried and had no joy. It can trigger an action when i turn the screen off myself, but it wont turn the screen off for me.
Any other ideas?
I feel like this is so straight forward and that i'm just being super dense - im hoping someone points something so obvious and straight forward out that i missed!

You could try an app like Button Savior. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey.nonroot
It has the option to swipe from the side to bring up the buttons, and from what I understand, the power button on it is exactly the same action as pressing the power button on your phone. You could tweak it to try and get it to the solution you want, but I think at least the button should be what you are looking for.

My phone seems to do the same action either way. I think I know what you are talking about. It seems that on previous roms, the screen could go dark, but if I woke the phone back up it wasn't actually locked. What about this app? It seems to distinguish between the two.

I use "No Lock" when I want to switch off the phone but bypass lock settings when I turn it on. Is that what you mean?

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion... The problem with that app is that the phone won't lock until I go back in and disable it... I want the phone to use the same system timeout so if I do leave my phone lying around it will lock after 3 or 5 minutes on its own.

Take this.
Note: Needs Root
Not sure it it covers your needs, but I'm using SkipLock combined with Gravity Screen
SkipLock let's you bypass the lockscreen (and pincode) when your phone is connected to either a trusted WIFI network or a trusted BT-device (carkit!).
As soon as you get home you'll turn on your screen and you the lockscreen as usual, but from that point on it's lockscreen free until it disconnects with your wifi network.
So when you turn off the screen the screen goes black, but as soon as you turn it on again you'll see either the homescreen or your last opened app.
It works really GREAT!
Gravity screen is not needed but makes it even easier. It automatically turns your screen on when you pick up the phone, and turns it off when you place it down (configurable). It also features Pocket Mode so it will turn the screen off when you put it in your pocket and on again when you take it out. Worst part was getting used to NOT press the power-button anymore

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion - i just tried the app and it has a non-root version, but that just basically turns the screen black, leaves the notification bar and navi buttons and doesnt actuall replicate pressing the power button.
I cant root my phone either as i need to use banking apps and these dont work with root.
Any other ideas?

Skiplock doesn't use up any battery. Gravity MIGHT, but there are options to choose that use up more or less battery.
Don't know about needing root though...
Hi, I have been looking for this too....no solution? I use the trusted places and devices to keep my phone unlocked when i am home, and when in the car (connected to bluetooth) but of course turning off the screen also locks it.
