I can't resist...
I am an owner of the awesome Surface Pro 128GB and am tired of seeing all this stuff about the Surface RT :silly:
Mod's can we please start a Surface Pro thread?
Thanks in advance,
Twack

This subforum says "Microsoft Surface". There is no Pro or RT label on the end of that. I think the intent was for this to be a catch all for both tablet models, It seems like it's a Surface RT forum because that is what came out first. It would likely be different if it were the other way around. Perhaps the best plan at this point is to start utilizing a tag to differentiate threads for those who really only want to concentrate on their specific model. Something like [RT] and [PRO] before the thread title?

Do you think that any questions or answers would apply to both? Prolly not since they are different OS's. The hardware might look the same but only the surface keyboards can be swapped between models. I learned the hard way when I bought my Surface Pro at BBy and asked for the Surface VGA adapter. They got one out, threw it in the bag and charged me some $40 bucks. Got it home only to find it didn't fit in the hole.... (no jokes) I flipped the box over and it said only for the Surface RT. Nothing on the front except "Surface VGA adapter".
Sometimes a little granularity helps. I vote for a split. We have to make sure things fit in the hole.

Those of you who want to see a Surface Pro subforum can post a request here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660354
The admins (not moderators) make these decisions. Support your request with reasons why you believe one is necessary. Remember that requesting one doesn't always mean one will get created. If it doesn't happen, this is obviously the best place for both devices to share a space, so everyone will have to take special care in specifying the device being discussed in each thread.

[q] NumberPad Keyboard needed!! (attention: this is an ugly doublepost!)

Hey out there!
Oh, I´m so annoyed by the default WP7 keyboard...it´s outrageous..and it´s getting worse!
Seriously: A few days ago I´ve posted this question in the HD2 forum too...and it drives me that crazy that I´m breaking all the good manner rules now, posting a "crosslink" right here, hoping that I´ll find some more fellows in misery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=986302
I´m begging for comments, ideas and solace.
something you have to bring up with microsoft on microsoft answers (social.microsoft.com). At present they only support the use of the current on screen keyboard. have you tried using the keyboard sideways? it makes the keys a bit wider. though you saying you posted in the HD2 forum, i'm guessing you're using a HD2... are you telling me you're still having issues typing on a 4.3" screen?
I can touch type 50-65 WPM on my HD7 depending on the day, with about 90%+ accuracy.
If you're having issues typing on a 4.3" screen, WP7's keyboard is not the problem - you are.
And no one is stopping you from buying a real WP7 device with a Physical Keybaord. The DVP I hear is quite hot these days...
Hey you both, thanks for your answers!
First: No, the WP7 KB of course is not that bad (I overplayed it a bit intentionally). But anyway I have to claim that I can still type much faster with an 12 button layout KB due to the fact you can type yours words absolutely blind (I´m sure you also remember these days where you were making a coffe with your left hand, ignoring that your right hand is typing something into your 1 m³ Nokia brick?!). The qwertz/qwerty layout is a good thing, but for me it´s still too small to type something in without looking at it.
Second: Since every mobile OS offers you a bunch of different keyboards (qwerty/qwertz; 12 Button; swype; etc) and every keyboard has it´s own fan community, I think it´s not that an absurd idea, to want this "freedom" on an WP7 too, is it?
Third: Yes, I do have a HD2 with an *goddamned, look at this very* big screen. But: The screen still has issues (eg ghost movements), what makes it sometimes difficult to get accurate results even when you make an effort to exactly hit the button...of course, this point has nothing to do with WP7 itself.
Stop texting in class under your desk???
Flash back to winmo and you can choose your keyboard.

And the question is: Any news on this topic?
Actually yes, they've opened it up and you can install any keyboard you want. Microsoft will also dispatch one of their top engineers to your house to help you as well.
Other options they've now provided include the ability for any wp7 owner to create their own UI on the go, so you can have a different one each day, and it will now print US, UK, and Canadian currency. Just enter the denomination and boom, it'll print money for you.
/Typed with ease on my LG quantum... Using the software keyboard
Thanks for your incredible effort, pal!
Now s.o. who just wants to share knowledge (as luckily most of us do), please? *g*

As you have mentioned, this is a double post. There are several posts in this thread already answering your question.
MS currently does not allow alternative keyboards.
There is currently no sideload hack for adding an alternative keyboard.
I've read your other post in the HD2 forum, and it seems in that post you are asking if there is an alternative keyboard. The answer is no.
In that post, it seems you're also asking for someone to work on this project and are looking to garner support from other XDA members.
In this post, It appears that you are just complaining that you don't like the keyboard. Thus, the less than supportive responses. You would haven been better suited searching for an existing thread on the WP7 keyboard and bringing it back from the dead. As you've stated, it is poor manners to double post, and it is also poor manners to repeat a topic already covered by a previous post (several posts actually).
I hope you get your keyboard.

The only thing your begging for is an infraction if this happens again.
Development forums are not for this kind of thing.
Please refrain from double posting and posting in the wrong place....

The Phone For You

First of all, there's been a hell of a lot of threads being made for a while now asking 'What phone to get' or 'S3 vs One X' for example and now there's more and more being made daily and there's just too many now.
That's where the idea for this threads comes into place. Any questions you wanna ask about comparing phones before you buy them, ask them in here.
There's 2 main good points about this -
1. Someone else in here could've already asked about phones that you wanted to compare. If so, you can read the answer and that way you've found out exactly what you wanted without typing a single thing or having to wait for a reply. And...
2. It will stop what will inevitably be more posts all regarding the same thing, from littering the forum. And any that are posted outside of this thread can be directed straight to here where their answer could already be awaiting them.
Simple as that!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Agreed, But really, Popular and repetitive comparisons like the S3 vs ONE X is easily googleable now, If not websites, Other android forums might have discussed that before.
But yeah, Both the popular and unpopular phone comparisons need only one thread, Even the tablet ones, They are multiplying now.
Also, In that way, Someone with a similar phone comparison (popular or not) as yours will be easier to find and you will be able to choose carefully without turning the general forums into a "What phone to buy" forums.
Oh and BTW, Can you make one for the "My phone is bricked/laggy/(insert problem here)" threads?
I just used the S3 vs One X as an example really, but yeah I totally agree that google has it covered and youtube is full of videos for the high end phones against each other.
The aim is to make this easier for people anyway so hopefully it works. I PMd orb3000 just after I made this to see if he'd consider making it a sticky. Not sure if he will or not, but that'll then make it even easier to be honest.
And I already think there's a thread for that. I could be wrong but I think I saw one a while back. I'll have a look around and then if not, I'll make one either later today or tomorrow. It all depends on how busy I am

Need Help: Tegra Note 7 on HP Slate 7 Extreme

first and foremost, i'd like to start by saying that this is my very first post for an android device and my knowledge level as far as messing around with the software goes is about -10 so please go easy if i'm talking like a total fool. and apologies if this is a new post, i'm new to the forums and i looked to the best of my abilities and found no thread related to this
now onto the important stuff; i'd like to know if there is a way for me to turn my physical HP slate 7 extreme into a virtual Tegra Note 7? i mean, they're almost identical, but not the same. one major issue i have with the S7E is that i have a feeling that HP won't be supporting the tablet very well (and i couldn't get my hands on a TN7 and i needed a non-samsung stylus tablet ASAP) . they're already over a month late on the 4.3 update that nVidia released.
so could someone please point me to a dummy's guide to "gut" the software from S7E and install TN7 software so that i can use this tablet as if i bought it from EVGA or Advent Vega or something? i want to be able to receive OTA updates from nVidia as soon as they become available.
thanks for reading
PS: if this is posted in the wrong section, my apologies, and please move this to the appropriate forum

Nexus 5 or something else?

Hello
I think my Desire Z might have just died. I was waiting for Project Ara to produce something but after they have announced a worthless test run in Puerto Rico I have no choice....
My 1st choice from the start has been the Nexus 5. The ability to choose and every ROM is I think awesome.
I also looked at the Samsung Galaxy K zoom but I have quickly discarded it as I see no ROM development.
So, should I go with the Nexus 5 or do you recommend something else?

Well depends on your budget that is. Nexus 6 is too costly and Nexus 5 is the right money for the right device. But if I were I would look into the OnePlus One.

Yes, because you and others, find it so fun to go thru a 1237 page thread were there are dozens of people asking and talking about what phone to get.
And AFAIK, there is no rule that asking what phone to get with my requirements and/or price range should belong in that thread.

Yeah, price range for me would be Nexus 5 but that is dynamic depending on what else is out there.
I have been recommended the OnePlus One (or Two) as well. The only issue I have with it is that they are going now with this is OxygenOS (yet another distro of Android just like Linux has Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, etc.) and I feel that is a stepback. Also, I really miss that it has no microSD (this is getting more common also this applies to the Nexus 5) and no wireless charging. But, it is a awesome phone nonetheless.

Bro I'm a Linux user, I know what distros are an I also know about OxygenOS but CM and PA still officially supports the OPO. So I don't see the problem here. You can always wipe and flash
And secondly about the storage, The Nexus 5 16GB costs $349 And the OnePlus One 64GB costs $349 so its a better deal than the Nexus plus the One had a better hardware from all aspects. Plus a lot of sensors. So it's still up to you which one your prefer man.

People don't read from the beginning. They read the most recent posts. Because they're not stupid, and (usually) don't reply to posts that are several years old. Frankly, I'm surprised this thread hasn't been locked/merged already.
That said, look at the LG G2. Same guts as the Nexus 5, but with a far superior camera, much bigger battery, and slightly bigger screen (in practically the same size body). Development doesn't match the Nexus 5, but that's like saying aftermarket customization doesn't match a Honda Civic. Alternative, but a bit more expensive (yet still cheap), there's the OnePlus One. It's basically an unofficial Nexus 5.5.
Lg g2, a better nexus 5 with a low street price

1st thread - Closed because it was replied to a year later
2nd thread - Closing it doesnt even make sense. Its a tablet thread and it gets redirected to a smartphone thread?
3rd thread - Very little information
4th thread- First reply, is a spamfest of websites
5th thread - Asking for chinese products and then getting like 5 a spamfest of websites
6th thread - Same as 4 and 5
7th thread - This one takes the cake. How can you ask about two phones, for whatever reason, and have the thread closed?
If its going to be like that, my suggestion towards XDA is simply close all sections including phone sections except phone development sections . If XDA strictly wants to dedicate itself to development and wont allow simple questions, then fine. But come on, closing some of those threads were pathetic more so the tablet ones.
Make a entire subsection for "What device should I get". This way you dont have clutter in the general sections.
Also, it is pathetic that you use the sex card to make yourself look like a victim. I am disgusted by your attitude when there are women around the globe being sexually harrassed and even burned. You should feel ashamed of yourself for even mentioning after getting owned that you are a woman. Very disrespectful.

Thats the exact problem: Someone posts "I want a phone" on page (lets say) 500. Same day a couple of people post the same thing and now the thread is at page 502. People wont go back to page 500 to help that person, they will just go to 502 and help whatever they see on that page.
It is TOO long of a thread to have a continous discussion about one member's option.
The real issue here is that xda has a lot of users. If even a small fraction of them opened threads to ask for advice on which device to purchase then many "more important" threads would get buried by the sheer volume of these threads. xda doesn't want to ban these discussions outright, so there currently are 3 threads devoted to discussions about devices, please repost your question in one of these three threads: The what should I buy thread or the The Device Suggestion Thread or the The Device Comparison Thread.
Thanks!

Should the Pixel and Pixel XL forms combine?

I posted a poll on the Pixel XL forum. Please vote if you have an opinion on this.
Right now on XDA we have separate forums for the Pixel and Pixel XL. For the first time (that I can think of) we have two identical Android phones in two sizes.I don't know how popular iPhones forums are on XDA but they don't have separate forums for the regular and plus versions. There isn't iPhone forums on XDA.
It seems like both Pixel and Pixel XL forms already have topics covering both devices. What are your thoughts on combining forums?
In my opinion, it depends on if the ROM, kernel and theme development will differ between the two phones. In theory, it would seem that the development for each would be identical because the internals are identical. However, I'm not sure how the screen size/resolution will play into that.
Plus, accessories such as cases and screen protectors for the Pixel vs the Pixel XL are also going to be different. This might make the "Accessories" section more confusing if the two forums were combined.
Yes, Combine
I'd say, combine everything but the Accessories.
PSA, the Galaxy Tab Pro series has a combined xda forum, for the 8", 10", and 12" sizes

I'll bring this up with the forum moderators for this forum and see what they think. My personal view is, the Pixel XL and Pixel phones should get a lot of traffic, based on the previous phones, I think 2 forums are warranted. We could get confusion when people are asking questions in the Q&A section for example regarding which phone they ware wanting support for etc. Also we would need to find out if the ROM's have different basis as well, if they did then it would almost certainly need two forums.

Agree with @Stephen ...but there are a few caveats that we need to look at first and unfortunately that can't be done until some development begins. First, are there any nuances in the architecture that differentiate the X from the XL? On the front face, only the display and battery are different, but as we all know that doesn't mean the rest is identical. Maybe there is something buried deep in the kernel or a line in one of the props that may seem miniscule, but throws everything out of wack.
Something that we can possibly look at in the future would be combination, but with some restructure. What I mean here is that we can have the Guides/News, Accessories, Themes/Apps/Mods and QA sections combined, but separate the X and XL Development sections from one another. That will make sure that if you are just asking a general question or need a guide, you can look in the combined section. But if you are looking for a specific ROM build, you will have to go into your specific arena.
Ultimately, we need to get devices in hand and a better analysis of the system dumps that we currently have. Those will tell the tale.

I would like to cast another vote to have a combined subforum as well. Yes, there are some differences between the devices, but the development that has been happening so far (dePixel8, SuperSU and TWRP, to name a few examples) have either worked for both devices or the developers have published separate builds for each device. I like the idea of a "Unified" sections, much like the Samsung Galaxy S4 subforum that exists. It can be at the OP/developer's discretion to create a release in the unified section, or just for one specific device.
@Stephen, now that some time has passed and development is very similar for both devices, is it possible to combine the forums into something like the S4 has? There has been a lot of double posting between the two separate devices, in both general questions as well as development.
Well, I want to know what this is referencing.

Yea I definitely think they should be combined. They should each have their own accessories forum obv but everything else should be joined. For the development forums there should be a requirement that when you post a ROM/Mod/whatever that you start the title with either
"Pixel"
"Pixel XL"
"BOTH"
To me it's a no brainier. Would be so much easier using this format and joining the forums
I have already combined them in my head. I treat them all the same. So yea, one would be awesome.
Please combine! Im guessing we're missing some great threads and info, and they are as well.

I can see the validity of both sides but we are definitely missing some very good information that is present on the XL forums that hold true for the Pixel. For instance, this thread by a forum moderator https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-root-flash-pixel-xl-t3507886 which to me is a redo of the Heisenberg 5x and 6P threads that were so valuable for the past year. But perhaps they should ask the devs as they are the ones who will have to deal with differentiating the devices, or perhaps making it easier for them if it holds for both devices. Personally, I don't believe there is enough traffic in either to warrant separate forums, but that is my opinion only and I'm sure the mods have their own thoughts.
So who do we actually go to in order to see if this is something they would even consider
