I want ASUS Transformer pad Infinity TF700T becose of its perfect case (with fine keyboard) and FHD screen (1920x1200). But I hate its stuffing with Android on board.
I want ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C becose of Atom processor and full Windows 8. But I don't like its HD screen - 1366x768 only. And I don't like its defective keyboard!
So, becose of comparable sizes of its cases, I'd like to buy both ASUS ME400C & TF700T and, than, to cast the stuffing of TF700T and put inside its case the stuffing from ME400C, connecting it to all jacks on board and touchscreen loop. Becose of one manufacturer, everything will be joined without problems. As a result, I will gain the 'Frankenstein' tablet with perfect case and FHD screen with ideal Atom stuffing and Windows 8 on board!
Any objections except costs?
Doubt it will even turn on let alone fit ...... but be our guest to guinea pig it. :cyclops: :silly:
My guess is that you will end up with two non-functioning pieces of hardware. Good luck!

No objections here lol...
Seems like a lot of trouble for no benefit.
What about just going with the 14" HP Envy touchsmart ultrabook 4 instead of prying 2 expensive devices apart?

I say you should donate some of your apprently copious amounts of cash to someone broke, and just go with the ultrabook suggestion. Apart from the cost, which is a bit much, that is highly unlikely to function. Also, thats a serious waste of parts I hope you plan to sell, or donate the tf700t parts as well. But, hey, its YOUR money, give it a shot, I suppose if your careful not to break anything you might even be able to return em should it not work.
Just go with a surface pro tablet. you get a 1080p screen and full windows and an i5 processor. Seems like a better choice for you. Its gonna cost yoh like 1k but if your willing to buy 2 tabs then I assume your good.

Nothing wrong with wasting a lot of cash! However, the direction in which said money is to end up in is wrong. PM me for my banking account number.
Nothing is impossible ) Visited ASUS firm SC today, asking engineers about my idea. So, the answer was - if you havy experience and skills with hardware and soldering-iron, all operations will take about 1 (!) day. The task is simplified becose of one manufacturer (ASUS). But, if money allows, it is possible to hibridize case form TF700, stuffing from ME400, and touchscreen from Nexus 10 (!). Holy heavens! Kind a paradise on the Earth! Best in cube in tablets technologies! Also, engineers from SC became intersted too and volunteered to help me with soldering ))) Not for free, of course (((
We discussed the monetary side of the idea and desided to work with second hand and spare parts. They've got TF700 case yet. Becose of start selling of ME400 - unconditioned tablets are being waited ))) There will be possibility of stufiing profit ))) Yes, of course I want Nexus 10 screen, but it will be too expensive. And there is no possibility to buy or to order this spare part from China at this moment (((

You do know that heating micro components with any old desk style soldering iron will cause heat damage?
Tiny connections are almost impossible to properly heat sink.
It might be possible to "hot-air" pot connections, but that's usually used in multi-connector cable work.
ESD is a problem also one small discharge and the component is done for.
These devices are manufactured with component inserters and solder wave machines.
The board maps are traced and pre-drilled for the insertion process.
All the flex connectors are bonded in a cleanroom environment to prevent particle contaminants.
The task is simplified because of one manufacturer (ASUS).
But, if money allows, it is possible to hybridize case form TF700, stuffing from ME400, and touchscreen from Nexus 10 (!).

My God, over three posts I'm trying to explain, that I want Atom-based transformer with FHD screen and perfect case! Unfortunatelly, dumb ASUS used to put on the market kind an invalid models!!! For example - atom based, but without full keyboard (ME400C), with 3G onboard, but wry functioning TF700KL, with win 8 (and Win RT), but with HD (accidents 1366x768 and 155 ppi) only. Just like if you want to buy bysicle, and I sell them, but inadequate - wthout one wheel, or without seat
There is only one possibility to get the tablet I want - compile it by myself (with SC engineers help, SC - service center, had you thought about Blizzard StarCraft? ), using stuffing from ASUS ME400C and case (with screen) from TF700T.
Dear snypa, ASUS TF700T and all tansformers have no usb 3.0 controller. Its possible to put the stuffing from this stick inside ASUS tablet, connecting to the usb-controller, but It will work as usb 2.0 device indeed
pass me the soldering iron please ...

LoL ... yeh i was only having a jab @ asus for the elcheapo storage solution they sold me. I think your frankenstein should be a great project to teach asus what products we the people are interested in!
ps- even @ usb2 ... these are still faster than my internal ! ( i actually have the dvr500 32GB orange/black - quik , but not this quik)
Entering the realms of taking apart three different pieces of fine technology and fuse it into one? Without a doubt that's going to be one hell of a money dump and lots of time required to be able to do it without screwing it up.
Good luck doing it though.

Hey all!
I'm in a sticky situation here, I'm choosing between a transformer or lenovo thinkpad (with pen). I'd like an actual digitizer, but other than that, the transformer is so much better than the lenovo as a whole package (IMO). So I've just got a few questions which will help me make the final choice:
* Does the new update with the supernote app (or other note taking apps) work well for taking handwritten notes (Important cause I do more maths and thats like funky symbols ), does a capacitive stylus work well in this and drawing apps (e.g some palm rejection, pressure sensitivity)?
* For the keyboard dock, I read early on that some keyboard shortcuts/combinations don't work. There were updates that fixed this but I can't seem to find this: does ctrl+backspace work for removing words? (similarly ctrl + arrow keys to jump between words)
* Can I charge things via the dock? I plan to tether from my phone and since it will probably die from doing so, I'd hope to keep it alive with the dock
My windows tablet is just too thick and heavy to tug around comfortably, its functional, has a keyboard and all, but isn't "portable". The galaxy tab 7 is very portable and has nice battery life, but is bad with productivity stuff (can't do much besides reading docs and web browsing. The transformer seems to slip nicely in between. I'd just really like some insight on the notes and drawing apps cause I frequently use that on my laptop.
Thanks guys

Quick note, I have both, have the TF and love it, got the Thinkpad at work and so I get to test it ^_^. For writing, it's EXCELLENT. Super accurate, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7UUfaLj_iY
I havent got the Folio case, but I hear it works nice, connects through USB. Not sure any more about it though, we might get it eventually. It's very fast, and has a few things on the ROM that the TF does not. Both are almost the same, but the TF does not have palm rejection, so writing with pens (even the adonit pro) is so-so. You can do it, but you gotta get use to it. The Thinkpad works like real paper. It's just so awesome to write with. The keyboard can even detect writing....and interpret text. The Note app built in is very good, but it's meant for the Thinkpad I think, you can't move it to another device for now. The pen is even pressure sensitive. But, the tab and pen is $530+100 for the keyboard. You dont get any extra battery either. The TF is about $400 and the dock is $120 on Amazon. Little cheaper, and you get more battery, but you lose the superb writing ability.
The App really decides how the shortcuts work I think, some support, some dont. You would have to try...some basic ones work though.
Yes you can charge with the USB!
All in all, Lenovo is great for writing, but the TF last longer and the dock functions almost like a netbook. Tough call, I'd really have a tough choice, but I think the TF would be best for me. But I dont draw/write a lot, so the Thinkpad might be better for you. If both combined, the build and buttons/connections (USB on tablet, TF has on dock) of the Thinkpad feel a tad nicer to hold, and the pen digitizer is a must for writing, but with the Dock functionality and battery of the TF, and maybe add some Padfone in there somewhere, I would buy that in a minute. Haha.
If you want, or if more people want, I can make an in depth review against the two. I love both honestly, they are the best of the best. Let me know.
This Excel might help you decide, has some basics of the tablets
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...ONdE1TT1RSdTcxbmRFeE5mdl9jdzZDb3c&output=html
Yea its a tough call
I like to draw, and as mentioned I'll need a pen to draw those yukky math symbols.
I know there's a folio case for the thinkpad, but its not as intergrated(is that the word?) and nice looking as the transformer. Plus, the dock on the transformer has 2 usbs, sd slot and extra battery... the folio on the thinkpad uses the only usb port, so I won't be able to have a usb on the thinkpad while typing
Guess its more like this: To replace a tablet (one with digitizer) the thinkpad works well. To replace a laptop, the transformer
I've still got a month or two to decide... but its a really hard choice at this point who knows maybe asus will drop an asus transformer 2 with all the things i want (essentially a transformer + active digitizer and one usb port on the tablet itself). Real pity seeing few companies employing the stylus (and dock of course)
As for the review, Thanks, but the information you've given me is already enough In the end, I'll be happy with either, just wanted some insight from actual owners.

No problem, Quite fun to use, love em both. Enjoy!
I don't know if this is a silly question, but what if you ordered the Thinkpad tablet's pen from the Lenovo website, and used it on the Transformer? Is that a thing that you could do?

In short, no.
More exactly thinkpad has an active digitizer that detects the pen's position and clicks, it's same thing as used in wacom graphic tablets, and also what has been on most windows tablet pcs.
The pen does not work without that.
That's in addition to having a capacitive touchscreen that detects finger presses and the capacitive styluses.

I actually tried that when I got my galaxy tab too. Used the stylus from my windows tablet just to see if it worked
Would be really cool if it did work though.
Some keyboard shortcuts work, but really past cut/copy/paste/alt+tab don't expect much. Things like control+backspace or control+shiftmotion do not work. Control+A does however which is nice. I use a Debian chroot and do most things in VIM, so I don't care so much .
I'm running Prime 1.9.1 atm so I don't know how the new notes app is but you may want to try Antipaper Notes HD. I find it O.K. for writing/drawing using a finger, except my hand writing is not as good as my typing. The touch creen is good enough but I can't say how it does with any stylises or pens: th only one I tried is a cheap piece of crap, but my finger works good lol.
If you do typing that is a heavy mix of letters and symbols, I suggest Hackers keyboard in landscape mode. Basically a standard keyboard. The ASUS is a Qwerty but the symbols layout is funky. When docked, you gain a standardQWERTY board that is almost 1:1 with the EeePC 1015s .

Guess I can live with the limitations. I'm slowly leaning toward the transformer because:
* its overall cheaper and you get slightly more
* I can still draw to some extent on the transformer, use the dock like a normal laptop. The same can't be said about the lenovo, it can draw (well), but I won't be able to treat it as a laptop
* Transformer seems to have larger community support

Hello, I want to get a new tablet (currently using and android'ed Touchpad still), and HD resolution is important to me. I've been keeping an eye on the TF700 and now have a chance to grab one for about $345 new. But I know some newer HD tablets were announced at CES and are on the horizon for some time (but I don't think pricing has been announced). At this point should I just hold off to see what is coming, or at that price am I safe to grab the TF700 and be happy for a while to come.
My primary uses will be reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movies.
Thanks to any help!
6 months ago I would have said buy but today I would wait. The lag issue is a pia (at least if you stick with stock rom) and there are some new hd tablets comming out in the next 3-6 months. The only thing i don't know is if they will have sd slots (which is a must for me but appears to be a nono to google).

Thank you for response, I have no issue modding to a different rom, I've done it on other tablets / phones before (heck I'm using a touchpad modded from webOS to android now anyways). But if modding it doesn't help much then that is a concern.
My other concern was the newer tablets will be priced again in the 400-500 range, or the lower priced HD tablets will have specs worse than the transformer already has.

My honest opinion, it's very hard to find a FULLY LOADED TABLET like tf700 with the highest resolution screen. If you willing to unlock to use custom rom. I would say YES 100%.

smart decision!!! bravo!
I bought mine on ebay for 350$ used, well worth it, beautiful screen and nice speed, glad you bought it, 345$ new is nuts, is that a ebay deal or?
Well today there are two alternatives; the acer and nexus 10. The acer is not a bad tablet but it runs a bit warmer and I think it has shorter battery life ( you should check reviews; it's been a while since i've read them). The nexus 10 biggest con is no sd slot but the recent mobiltech - http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tablets/Google-Nexus-10.htm - was over the top positive if you don't need an that sd slot.
-
I'm not unhappy I have the tf700 but the lag thing is a major headache when updating or browsing a lot of web pages and given the price point of the tablet it is a bit downer.
-
Anyways I'll probably stick with it another year and then pick up a 13inch ultra-book (sub 3lb) with 1080p screen.
Yeah I agree be wise to wait. The new Sony, Samsung, Visio etc.. coming out.
I think you should wait ! I own the tf700 and I'm not pleased with it mostly because of the lag and random reboots. Sony announced an HD tablet that seems to be a good one. Anyway you should wait until MWC in Barcelona at the end of next month before you make up your mind.

But Sony announces great things and releases them 6 months after everyone else. That's why their phone sales are in the toilet. They just came out with a new one, nice phone, but it is about the same as a one x, which came out about 9 months ago. I will also admit the lag issue, but still the best one out there, the screen is amazing.
Arguments for the TF700:
- Screen! 1920*1200.
- Screen. 700 nits brightness and great contrast. Almost twice as bright as an iPad 3.
- Keyboard dock. With additional battery and USB.
- microSD card slot, and full size SD card slot in the dock.
- It looks great.
Arguments against the TF700:
- Lag. Slow internal eMMC. (can be worked around with custom ROMs, but not fully solved.)
- Unlocking to install custom ROMs voids your warranty!
- Unlocking is a lottery, and you still can't replace the bootloader on an unlocked device. (the unlocking tool simply does not work for some people and they get no help from Asus.)
- Somewhat unstable, occasional random reboots, hangs with white screen.
- Build quality issues - people report the docking mechanism breaking, light bleed, screen getting loose.
- Only 1 GB RAM and old (for 2013) Tegra 3 SoC.
- Some software that works on other tablets is not available for the TF700.
- Loudspeaker isn't great.
Some folks are replying without seeming to have read the other comments beyond the first. The OP has already made a move on the TF700T.
For the OP's needs "reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movie", the TF700T is more than suitable.
No doubt the N10 has higher performance, but at the cost of far worse battery life. And you don't really need an N10 for "reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movie". I guess you don't "need" a TF700T for that either. Lower ranking devices could fit that bill just fine.
But considering the OP has purchased aTF700T, I think they'll enjoy it.

Exactly, the N10 is nice and all, but I couldn't live without my MicroSD card, the OP will enjoy it a lot, the 1080p screen look brilliant with movies and text, and you can store tons of movies on a microsd
I just got my Infinity 64GB about 2 weeks ago. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. I have noticed a bit of lag on the web, but it's not horrible. I'm sure a fix will eventually come out for it. I don't see it staying that way forever. I'd probably like to eventually root it, but I get totally confused when reading the instructions on how to. I've only rooted my HTC Thunderbolt and that was a pretty in depth task.
I have noticed the little black line thing here and there but it's not too bad either. I figure a fix will come out for that as well.
I will say with 64GB I was able to load 13 High Quality (about 3 - 6gb each) movies on this thing and it works great! Think I might try knocking the quality down of the movie to a smaller file size so I can load a lot more on here. Just haven't found a ripper/compressor that I like that can create ripped movies without a lot of artifacting...
I'd say the most bothersome thing I've noticed with this tablet is the Light Bleed... however it's only noticed during a completely black screen. It's always got the factory warranty, plus I purchased a 3 year Square Trade warranty along with it so I'm good until 2016 with this bad boy.
This is a pretty interesting tablet coming out...

I'm always on the look out for my GF, she's in the market for a tablet. Where'd you find your deal?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Do it if you are comfortable unlocking, flashing trwp, and installing Clean ROM. After doing so my tab is smoother than ipad4 at my work. New tablets may be coming out but i doubt they have a comprehensive KB dock as good as this one. Screen is better than retina display and other HD tableys bc of IPS+, screen brightness is as important as res due to glare issues, IPS+ is great for combatting this, and i have yet to see another device with super IPS+. The screen goes to 600 nits of brightness rather than 300-350, which is the highest ive ever seen in any tablet or laptop. The range of brightness settings is also badass, you can go to incresibly low to incredibly high, which is great but often unmentioned.
I have actually replaced my laptop and desktop with tf700. Since buying and flashing CROMI i have never touched my laptop/desktop. My workflow is better on this bc of gesture/KB dock combination. I couldnt be happier.
Plus the tf700 is a sexy fckin beast, nothing else out there looks as badass. The mfctring quality is sick. I have dropped mine from around 5 ft off the ground onto concrete on pretty much every edge of this device and it is still working as well as when i bought it. Slid off my kitchen table onto tile floor directly onto the creen and slid about 5 feet, yet the screen doesnt have a single scratch. GO TF700 lol.
If you don't need the keyboard dock. Then jump on the Nexus 10. But if you are planning to use the tf700 and rooting with a flashing rom. Pull the trigger. Tf700 rooted is a beast of a tablet. And just provides so much functionality with the dock. I mean extra battery, sd slots, usb slots. The full package.
Its never to late to RETURN IT! And you will find there are now some that have unlocked it had to send it back and Asus will not fix it even though it was a hard ware problem. I had just bought one a week ago. Would not even turn on. Just look at all the new stuff coming out some in just weeks others a few months. Better to wait. I am
I am an Android Fanboy....but the Vivotab Smart for $499 looks really nice and is full Windows 8. Is anybody else thinking about cheating on their Infinity Tabs?
It looks great, and I had the chance to try one a few weeks ago (in-store). It's a nice device, really, but the customer support on ASUS'part scares me off in buying one of their produtcs again.
(My main gripe with the 700 is the docking mechanism, and they seem to have used another type on the VivoTab. Still.. )
I like it too...
We had this discussion going before.
All the Windows tablet threads were shutdown however.
It looks nice, I initially had my hopes and dreams on it, but with ASUS reputation, I rather plonk the additional $300 and get the Surface Pro tablet.
Besides, what I read in reviews, the Intel Atom which I thought was going to be a much more improved generation made for this year, reports are that it struggles to playback Flash and other streaming video compared to the more powerful i5 core Surface Pro.

Indeed, the only technical reason I'd see for staying away as to specifications s the Atom processor used. The full Intel mobiles are so much faster! (Reportedly, most Atoms struggle at even the simplest of tasks.)
For the $$ to me the win8 tabs just aren't worth it with the ultrabooks sitting at lower prices now.
Been eyeballing the HP Envy x2 selling today for 749 usd.
I personally stay away from Intel Atom as far as possible. Furthermore, 1080p screen is the main reason I bought the tf700.
With that CPU? Hell no.

There's a science joke just waiting to be made in there somewhere...
i played for a couple of days with the Vivo, and just bought the wife a Pro and have to say everything I hated about RT and the whole setup is gone. I am not getting rid of my Infinity any time soon, but that Surface Pro is a screaming cool piece of kit.
I should have been more specific on the Thread Title. I am talking about the ME400 Smart which is full windows.
I think I might get one and test drive it. I am leaning 60-40% to get it. I am worried about the lack of apps and the speed. But the positive of the Atom processor is the battery life. I need to find somewhere with the White model locally in stock so I can return it easily if it is slow and laggy.
Putting things in perspective in terms of the the tablet you want to purchase.
If you need processing power, go with an ultrabook as several posters mention here. Prices are great, battery life is **pretty good**.
Remember, with ultrabooks, like any notebook, they require active cooling to go along with the power.
If you are looking for a alternative to an Android tablet, the Vivotab Smart is a great choice IMO.
I currently have a Galaxy Note that is running a custom ROM. It does pretty much anything I need an android device to do, even things in tablet mode through the benefit of the ROM I am using.
I was seriously considering the Note 10.1. Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 CPU is just outdated now compared to a quard core Tegra 3.
My main reasons for wanting (not needing :laugh a tablet: Do my web surfing, watch TV shows/Movies, listen to music, dabble a little in Word/Excel (nothing major), social networking and remote manage PC's on my network (Team Viewer/Real VNC).
I can do ALL of this on my Galaxy Note phone NO PROBLEM. However, I wanted a device with a bigger screen to do this, and use my phone as the tether device when necessary, and also save battery life to make that emergency call when I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere...instead of having a dead battery due to watching that extra episode of Battlestar Galactica.
I was thinking about an android tablet, but it was just too much of a direct extension of my phone. So I decided to look at Windows 8 tablets. My first choice was the Microsoft Surface RT. VERY VERY glad I did not go with this device. Fit and finish is spectacular. Hardware is debatable - personal opinions right? However, the functionality of Windows 8 RT is not much more than an Android OS, and the Google platform has MUCH more to offer than the RT platform right now. I have no patience in waiting for apps to be developed.
Surface Pro is a great option, since it is FULL Windows 8...however battery life is crap. 4-6hrs? Might as well go with an ultrabook.
With the usage that I was intending my tablet for, I needed something to last through the day. So I did not need to have a device that is eating away @ the battery life when it is doing nothing, just to power a high horsepower CPU.
That's where the ME400 comes in. Battery life? Spectacular! I listen to at least 2 hrs of music, do about 1hr of web surfing (cumulatively), watch about 1-2hrs of video, and still have AT LEAST 40% battery remaining after being on for 18hrs.
I've installed full Microsoft Office 2010, Real VNC, Team Viewer, Power ISO, some android OS related software to modify various Samsung Galaxy phones, a few gigs of music, 5-6Gbs of video and still have 11GB remaining. (waiting for my 64GB Micro SDXC!)
I can view full flash sites which most android tablets cannot, unless you stick with GB or ICS. (although flash is being phased out to HTML5).
And again, file management, network management is seamless as it is the familiar Microsoft OS interface.
The ME400 to me is a great compromise between processing power, battery life, and most of all price. @ $499 CDN, hard to get that much functionality for that price. I can do everything on my ME400 on my Android devices, and I can do almost everything on my Android devices, on my ME400. My only wish is to get Bluestacks working on the Clover Trail CPU so I can play some of my Android games on my ME400...but I don't think it will have the CPU/Graphics processing power to do it.
There's my 2 cents.
I picked one up yesterday. So far the updating is a problem. Asus live update cannot connect to server and Windows update wouldn't download at first but over night it did. I think the tablet won't do a Windows update unless in standby with no other user actions. Probably due to the slower processor Windows update waits till the user isn't playing. But as far as the Asus live update not connecting at all, that may make the device a deal breaker for me.
Yes Asus screwed up the infinity Rom but the community here fixed that. If Asus update won't work out of the box with this I don't want it since we all know how bad Asus customer support is.

The Live Update not working is a known issue. Reading old posts, apparently the Live Update did some bios updates that royally messed up the tablet. Perhaps Asus has taken the whole system offline until they get their drivers and updates in order.
My Windows updates were a little slow at first too. But eventually got through them as well.

What sort of Google integration are you looking for? My emails are synced in with the stock mail app...although it is mediocre. Contacts are all loaded in People...
Google Talk, you can just install the app, albeit doesn't run in the Modern UI screen...I just have it synced with IM+ for that. Again, not the best choice, but will do the job for now.

What did you decide? I've been using a Smart for a month or so now, and haven't had any lag issues. Storage can be a bit limited, I've installed Office 2010 Pro and then upgraded (for free) to 2013 (note: this upgrade process didn't uninstall 2010, so I now have both versions), dumped on 20 or so CDs, half a dozen movies and around a dozen apps and I only have 21gig left to play with.
Issues:
1) the screen is the worst for finger prints I've ever used - other than that viewing is ok
2) the windows button seems really unresponsive (on this particular model) - so I end up swiping in from the right and hitting the button from there
3) installing updated and upgrading Office seemed to take longer than I would have expected
4) finding the keyboard and cover (transleeve) isn't easy, I'm still using a cheap cover off eBay. If you have the option I'd buy with the kb and cover if I could start over again...
5) it doesn't come with the Micro USB to USB converter or the Micro HDMI to 9 pin (the Acer w510 has both in the box) - so a purchase off eBay is needed (and associated wait while shipped from China if you want a cheap one)
other that that, it's been all good. really like this little machine, does all I need it to!

ok, one more observation (which is both a pro and a con). There is only 1 micro USB which is also used for charging. Having the tablet use a micro USB for charging is a plus in that I can use my phone chargers (including existing car chargers etc) interchangibly. However, I didn't charge the tablet last night (plug was off at the wall) and it was dead this morning. I'm working from home, and can't connect my mouse at the same time as charging the device - which is a bit painful. My keyboard is full Bluetooth, so no issues there - but the mouse uses a USB dongle (which is std for most mouse at the moment) - I'll need to invest in a full Bluetooth mouse as well...
not a biggie, but something to consider for those looking to make a purchase (for example the Acer W510 has a separate charging point, so this wouldn't be an issue. but on the other side of the coin the micro usb car chargers etc wouldn't work.....)
Also it charges slower with the the standard micro USB.
The only thing that Win 8/VivoSmart added for me was the ability to use a SmartCard reader to authenticate in a web browser. But there was too many shortfalls in apps as a tablet interface. I would still want/need a tablet. Now If I didn't already have a full size ultra book then I would consider the VivoSmart due to price and portability. The goal of carry one device still eludes......

Hey wpbear - not sure I understand your post ? The Smart is a tablet - doesn't come with a docking station - the keyboard (most often purchased seperatly) is more like the Surface, than a ultrabook...
I guess the app thing isn't really an issue for me. As the Smart is running full Windows (rather than RT) I'm not really using many apps at all. I tend to use full Office and Firefox.. Covers most of my needs.
Posting this here because I did not know this until today when my frequently drained TF700 since recent Android update was feeling hot like one of those hair warmers that mom use to wear.
Took it to Best Buy they looked at it, touched it, felt that it was warm enough to act as a foot warmer. Then they ushered me to the register for exchange or credit after they tried to use the tablet for a minute and it shut off on them.

Minus the keyboard dock that transforms the tablet into a notebook. Many of us bought this particular line of tablet specifically for the keyboard dock so that we can conveniently have a convertible tablet or notebook anytime we like.

- Low res (1280x800 makes my eyes and my head hurt.)
- No keyboard (Have you tried writing 50+ pages of novel a day on a touchscreen? It's a nightmare!)
- No additional battery (I do 7+ hours a day of travelling... plus working during the rest on my tab.)
- No USB port (good luck hooking up a portable harddrive to a Note 10.1: It gives you a "Voltage too high" error. My work requires a 2TB USBdrive.)
- Only a MicroSD slot and no SD (DSLR's don't work with MicroSD cards... And now I have TWO MicroSD's of 64GB with me on top of the 64GB internal.)
- Lower brightness (Outside the Note 10.1 was near-unreadable.)
I'll stay with the TF700, thanks. For me the Note 10.1is far too restrictive.
Yeah I dont know that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is much of an upgrade from the TF700. My Grandma gots a TF300 and I see the pixels and it drives me crazy. A full HD screen is the way to go, especially with dock, extra battery, All the storage capability, etc. I am glad you enjoy it, but I wouldnt as much as my Infinity.

My Macbook Pro and Dell Xps laptop have the same resolution and my head doesn't hurt working on it. Perhaps you need glasses if viewing 1280x800 makes your head hurt.
Why would I want to attach an external hard drive to a tablet. I don't even attach external drives to my laptops. If I want to transfer files or access files on a remote drive i. e. I just access it over a network share.
Typing 50+ pages is a pipe dream on a tablet let alone the transformer infinity which has the slowest glitchiest performance of any tablet I used. If I wanted to use a physical keyboard there are plenty of wireless keyboards available for the Android tablets.
In all it just sounds like you're trying to convince yourself to hold on to the TF700, if resolution was really your deal break then you made a mistake not getting the Samsung Nexus 10.

Although, I think he truly misses his TF700 - why else would he keep coming back to the TF700 forums? Or maybe he misses the abuse from us?
It's really simple - we are big boys - we can decide for ourselves which tablet fits our needs the best. It's a personal preference - there is no device that is "better" for everyone...
It's obvious that the_game_master had issues with his setup as there are plenty of folks that love their TF700's and use them daily without all of those "glitches"! User error comes to mind...

From the factory, yes. But, once you unlock, root, and install CROMI and do a few tweaks, it's a totally different tablet. Still not as 100% smooth as other tablets, but that's a trade-off if you want a detachable keyboard with extra battery and USB ports.
We're glad you're happy with your new tablet. We're happy with ours. Being left in peace would be the next step.

I agree completely. Many are extremely happy with their Infinity's and are using them as laptop replacements. A Cromi'd, or now a Cromix'd, will smack just about any tablet off the market right now and we owe that to our great and dedicated devs. Sorry you had such a problem, but this tablet has more than any other tablet out there. However, in the end, your loss, and our gain .

What does that have to do with me not needing the use of a portable USB hard drive on my laptop? I don't need the use of a USB external drive period for either my laptops or tablets. Any additional storage outside of the MicroSD I keep on a network share.
Why lugg around an external hard drives to use on a device that's meant to be used portable and easy to go?

What does that have to do with me not needing the use of a portable USB hard drive on my laptop? I don't need the use of a USB external drive period for either my laptops or tablets. Any additional storage outside of the MicroSD I keep on a network share.

Good for you! :good: You obviously never leave your house.
I, however, travel all across Europe. You don't seriously believe there is a continent-wide free WiFi network, do you?
Why lugg around an external hard drives to use on a device that's meant to be used portable and easy to go?

Why lug around a DSLR when you have a camera on your tab? Why lug around a tablet when you have a smartphone?
Because there's not enough space to store the backups of 8 64GB SDcards full of photographs, nor to store more than two Full-HD Blurays. Again, I do not have decent-speed internet access most of the day.
Yes I looked around this forum and nobody is typing 50+ word document pages and using the Infinity as their primary computer successfully.

That's because those who do, you ignore or pretend that they're trying to convince themselves. I write all my reports on my tablet, as well as my novels. It works fine. The only reason the TF700 hasn't fully replaced my computer are Adobe CS5 and (serious)Games.

I agree. I use my tablet more then my desktop at home anymore, and I got an iphone but I only use it for tethering to my tablet lol. I have a gaming rig at home, but I dont believe a tablet is for heavy gaming. My computer weighs like 50 pounds and will smack any mobile device off its little stands.
Anywho, off topic, you write novels? Maybe I need to do some research and find a book of yours, if you got one officially published .

For present-day games my laptop is a little outdated, but back in 2009 (When I bought it) it was perfectly capable of running everything. (It's an Asus N70sv with 2.8ghz dualcore, 4gb ram and an Nvidia Geforce 130M. Really all I need to replace is my GPU, but I lack the money to do so.) It ran Crysis on Ultra at 30fps. (Though I'm still not sure exactly how it managed that.)

Sadly I'm not a paper-published author. I mainly write for my own enjoyment and occasionally as a project, but I do post my work online. (well, part of it. Most of it is still work in progress )

This pretty much.
I tried one and was VERY impressed with the S-Pen despite not being able to see a real use as at the end of the day typed notes will always be easier to read and the digitizing process was very off with my handwriting.
That and the fact that it felt like I still had that plastic screen protector that devices usually ship with once I'd been looking at Nexus / TF700 screens lower res is a no go
Guess I'm gonna head back to BB. Hope they take this one back. The vibrating motor is intermittently cutting in and out. When it stops working if I butt it on the lower right corner with the heel of my hand it'll come back on. With all the other disappointments I've had with this device this one is the last straw for me. It's a shame as I had a lot of confidence in Asus products until the 201 I had (returned) and now the 700.
Just wanted to start a dedicated thread to discuss some potential replacement devices for the TF700, instead of discussing it in the CROMi-X thread (some people seem to get really upset when you talk about something "off-topic"!).
As we all know, the TF700 has some serious flash-memory performance issues. While I would love to replace my TF700 with an alternate-branded device (not giving Asus anymore chances - was bit by them with the TF101, TF700 and even my Nexus 7 is now having charging issues), there don't seem to be many (if any) options available that provide the same functionality as the TF700's keyboard dock (which I use with my TF700 99% of the time!).
So far, we have identified these potential Android alternatives in the CROMi-X thread (really not interested in a Windows or Apple iOS device):
- HP SlateBook x2
- Toshiba AT10LE-A (speculative at this point - not released yet)
Really, that's about it. However, it has been noted that the HP SlateBook x2 has two serious (deal-breaking) issues:
- No root access (at leat not yet)
- No way to connect to PC (although, I just read about a cable that does allow ADB access when connected to a PC, so this may not be an issue anymore).
The Toshiba AT10LE-A sounds promising, but I would be worried about developer support for it, if it is ever really released (just "leaked" info so far).
Anyone else know of any other Android-based devices that support a true keyboard dock?

Hmm, just realized that the Toshiba AT10LE-A "leaks" were all from May, 2013 - it looks like the tablet was already released, but I can't find any mention of the keyboard dock anywhere "officially" - I'm wondering if the keyboard dock got "axed"!?!? I hope not!

Well this isn't exactly a tablet but an interesting idea, The TransMaker
That's an interesting idea that I like. The only problem is that it's specific to one type of phone... But, for $99, it is interesting!
Honestly, I really don't understand why more tablet makers don't offer keyboard docks as options - even if they don't have the battery in them like the TF700 dock does. I really don't understand it. It would just be another accessory that they can make money off and would offer more options to their customers.
I really wish Samsung made a keyboard dock for their tablets - they seem to produce some very well-received tablets - just wish they had a keyboard dock!
It's getting to the point where I may just go with a "keyboard case" - Zagg seems to make some nice ones for some popular tablets. At least that way, it would still be "part of" the tablet and you wouldn't need to carry around a completely-separate bluetooth keyboard. Plus, they have backlit keys, which is really nice. Sure, I'd lose the battery, the trackpad and the expansion ports (SD Card and full-sized USB port), but honestly, I really don't use those that much on my TF700 (beside the battery). It is nice having a USB port when needed though (I can even connect a DVD drive to my TF700 to read DVDs when needed!).

My Dad had a Samsung Note and had a KB dock for it. I think it was the Note....
I'd prefer a hardware interface dock, not a BT dock, also. Integrated battery would also make it much more worthwhile. That is why I bought this TF700 in the first place.
Well I have a TF701T and it is a fantastic device. So much faster than the TF700T. Even with stock it is quick and with CROMi-X it flies.
The main issue is the dock. Asus have messed up big time as there is a design fault that means the tab doesn't sit firmly in the dock. I sent mine away for repair and they sent it back 'fixed' - in reality they changed the hinge but it made no difference. It doesn't actually cause any issues just doesn't feel great when you pop it over feeling some movement there. Some people have had connectivity issues due to this fault so I imagine it may shorten the life of the connector.
Shame really as other than this you cannot fault the device at all.
I thought that you still had some flash-memory slowness with the TF701? I thought that you mentioned that in the CROMi-X thread shortly after you got it?

Er.... no by default the browser is not very optimised but the device is very quick off the bat. I said that the optimised TF700 doesn't necessarily warrant an upgrade but the TF701 is definitely faster. 18900 on quadrant (16,000 stock) and 33,000 on Antutu.
Ah - sorry about that! As I get older, my memory gets worse and worse!!
Maybe I really should consider the TF701 then - I'm just so weary of Asus anymore! The TF101, TF700 and now the Nexus 7 (which I really liked up until I started having charging issues) have left a "bad taste in my mouth"...
But then again, being that I use the dock almost 100% of the time, I'm now a little worried about the dock issues that you've mentioned...
I think I'll hold out a little longer and see if anyone else releases an Android tablet with a keyboard dock before I decide...
Thanks for clearing that up though - I was mistakenly under the impression that the TF701 still suffered from slow-flash-memory issues...

I'm assuming that my TF700 dock won't work with the TF701? That is another thing I wish Asus did better - I wish they provided the "docking hinge" portion of the dock with the tablet and made them interchangeable, so that you don't have to buy a new dock every time you upgrade the tablet!

The tf701 is a speed demon, so far has not suffered with the tests I've done, here some differences with the TF700:
Display: The tf701 has a much better than the TF700, which has its best when you activate the " vivid " mode, the resolution is higher and definitely looks awesome. The only lack is that i believe tha not have gorilla glass, definitely anti scratch, but not gorilla glass.
Processor and Memory: This section is satisfactory, the TF 700 users notice the difference immediately, when you install applications can navigate and do other tasks without lag, transfer files have a nice speed, and his 2 GB memory mantains everything very fluid. :fingers-crossed:
Battery: The performance is much better than my experience with the TF700 , can work between 20 % and 25% .
Games and Office Applications : This tablet can do it all, for example, the NFS most wanted graphics demands increases or decreases according to the SOC power, in my nexus 4 it runs with medium to high effects, but on the TF701 applies all effects like wet streets , smoke and paint scratches. In other hand with office applications, finally I can work with excel files without feeling that huge lag when moving from one sheet to another . :fingers-crossed:
Sound: The speaker is more powerful, but i miss the double speaker like the TF101 :silly:
Cons : Well you i have to mention it, and first is the possible lack of Gorilla Glass ( a screen protector resolved it ) , elimination of flash camera ( I personally do not take pictures with the tablet ) , less resolution of the rear camera, and finally the vibration was removed ( I have not found a way to activate )
TF701 is for now a strong option if you have or comer from TF700, had a note 10.1 and returned it for the amount of bloatware and thin frames, nothing beats the feel of the aluminum case in my hands.
I mention that this is my experience and just my opinion.

Why not wait for ASUS to come out with a TF702? Maybe ASUS will finally make the perfect Transformer -- I'd hope ASUS is aware they flubbed up the dock & will fix it.
When I had my Google Account sync problem in cromi-X, I bought the Dell XPS 12 (work emergency). I really like it.
Well, for some reason, Asus just can't seem to a Transformer device just right... It seems that there have been some pretty major issues with every transformer they've released - sometimes hardware-related and sometimes software-related:
- TF101 - This was probably the best Transformer of all time - had stereo speakers (on the sides), was lightweight and performed very well for it's time. The keyboard dock was just about perfect as well. I really like the TF101 - until they broke the firmware for it and just abandoned it with broken firmware (random reboots).
- TF201 - This one was a disaster from day one - had a lot of hardware issues including weak wifi and GPS reception... Didn't buy this one, luckily.
- TF700 - We all know about the problems with this one - SLOW flash memory! Then, once again, the "final" firmware release left a few things broken - I constantly get some kind of major "blue" screen interference when using a mouse (or the trackpad), mainly due to the calendar widget, I believe. Most folks also have battery drain problems, which appear to be a result of a software issue. Of course, Asus didn't fix the issues and just moved onto a new device.
- TF701 - Seems they fixed the slow flash memory but they broke the keyboard dock!
As you can see, I'm weary of waiting for the next "almost great" Asus tablet - and for good reason, I think. While Asus is quick to release new versions of firmware, the releases are usually bug-ridden and have some pretty big issues and then they just abandon the device and release a new one, leaving us with decent hardware (usually), but bug-ridden software.
Based on their history, I just don't have any faith that Asus will release a great Transformer...

This. I did a good bit of research, but when I went to buy my TF700 there was very little info about the internal i/o issues. I had never owned a previous ASUS device but had seen all of those issues, but it seemed that the issues were always treated as "all the previous issues from the TF series are fixed in the TF700".
Having seen sbdags' report on the power of the TF701, I'm sorely tempted to get that device, but since it is going to be a while before I get one, I'll definitely be checking out the competition. But I ma just like you - I am absolutely addicted to the (TF Series) dock and the battery in it....

I am not sure you'll ever have consistent excellent USER feedback (though you may have a consistent majority of positive user reviews) - there are always going to be people who do not like a device for whatever reason. I'm like that regarding iOS-based devices - never gonna own one. No matter how good a device is from crapple, I'll never own one - I would have in the past gone with a Mac as an additional machine, but now that I can do Hackintoshs, I'll never buy a mac.
In the past I've been the same way about Samsung as well, but as it is coming time for a new phone, I might have no choice but to look into a Sammy for a phone...but I have not researched phones in so long, I have no real clue what a good powerful phone is anymore lol.
If you're cool with stock KitKat with added apps that will eventually be copied by others, check out the moto x. I know it has a rap for being underpowered, but this phone is easily the best smartphone I've had yet. If my X breaks tomorrow, I'm buying another one at motomaker.com within the hour.

I was actually watching that pretty heavily over at DroidRZR last year when it was in development. I'm pissed the Google turned around and sold MotoMobi out after grabbing only the patents, because I really thought that Google + MotoMobi was going to be a total win situation, hands down, in spite of some info I found out about MotoMobi....
And this time I'm getting a dev edition lol....
Moto X comes in Dev edition, too. Anyway, just my 2 pennies worth. Have fun picking a new phone, @johnlgalt !

I am well aware that the dock is no where near as functional as on our Transformer, but I still think this new Lenovo tablet (and matching keyboard) does look interesting. I do not know how the processor fares against our TF700s though...
