I'm a Telus user in metro Vancouver. I can see the cell tower I'm connected to out of my window. Confirmed with Open Signal maps and such.
On my old 3G Motorola Milestone running CM 7.2 Network Signal Info Pro says it is connected as UTMS 14.1 Mbit/s.
My "4G" Samsung Galaxy S (Slimbean 3.1) and HTC Amaze (CM 10.1 nightly feb3) report HSDPA 7.2 Mbit/s.
My old Motorola has faster downloads in my tests (yes twice as fast).
I've been fiddling with build.prop and such as well discussed in the forums, but no change on either 4G phone.
I've tried this both out in the 'burbs and downtown Vancouver. Never get better than 7.2 Mbit/s connection on 4G phones.
Any ideas, Telus really have slower 4G than their 3G?
Time to get an S3 LTE?

I flashed Axura RC 2.5 between Christmas and New Years. Everything seems to be good with the exception of me not being able to pick up 3g coverage in places where I normally would. I have had an H, 90% of the time and its nowhere near as fast as 3g. Should I try a different modem before finding a different ROM?
No h is faster. Can't remember what it stands for but its basically 3.5g more then likely your mind isjust making it seem slower bc you are paying more attention to the speeds. Most of the roms our there don't use 3g they use hsda our whatever it is called

H = HSDPA
AT&T 3G = HSDPA.
It's not faster nor slower. The same thing. AT&T insist on only display 3G on all its phones when you run AT&T stock firmware.
And if you flashed a Euro ROM you may lose 850Mhz 3G support (ask the chief for confirmation of 850 support). AT&T now shifts a lot of 3G towers towards 850Mhz, instead of the old 1900Mhz.
Technically, 3G on GSM world could mean plain UMTS, HSDPA, HSPA+ etc. In the old days, AT&T has a mixture of UMTS and HSDPA depending on which city you were in. Hence the requirement from AT&T to display 3G for all 3G signal types. Nowadays, all its 3G towers has been updated to HSPA+ but Captivate hardware is limited to HSDPA only.
Doesn't ATT still have UMTS? My Perception 10 shows H = HSDPA and 3g = UMTS
yes?
UMTS is what HSDPA built on. AT&T no longer has plain old UMTS. According to its CES 2011 press release, AT&T has finished upgrade 100% of its 3G towers to HSPA+.
Now what about mobile ap, I can connect to my laptop but with limited or no connectivity with full H service? Would that be an issue with the rom? They closed the Axura thread so I cant get all my question answered.
You're right
H = HSPA (HSDPA + HSUPA)
3G = HSDPA
Inspire 4G = "4G"... so what's this "H+" icon?
It represents HSDPA, which is just an enhanced 3G, I'm assuming... so where's the "4G" icon, and why don't I have it?
Also, what is "HSPA"? My connection is showing as HSPA+ >.>.
H stands for HSDPA. H+ stands for HSPA+ which is what the USA carriers are "pretending" is 4G. its really fake 4G. HTC obviously feels otherwise, and named it properly as "H+" which is what it is.
its all HSDPA anyway so it dont matter. LTE is the proper 4G and it will be here later this year...but inspire wont work with it.

LTE isn't 4G either.
Both hspa+ and LTE have similar speeds, with LTE slightly higher. The difference between Verizon and ATT is that Verizon phones will fall back onto evdo when not in an LTE area, which is slow as hell. ATT customers will fall back onto hspa+, which is still pretty fast.
all stock inspires are HSPA LOCKED!
lame of course.

once HSPA is unlocked i get upwards of 4.3mb some get more.
HSPA = "3.5G" diff not 4 G LTE

AT&T will eventually be super fast! i mean 4.3 is good
i am in orlando FL hspa is storng here full bars always H

Hi so I was under the impression that my skyrocket didn't have a 3G ability or HSPA+ ability and only either 4G or 2G edge because when I used stock GB when I wasn't in 4G area it would go to the painfully slow edge.but after flashing a radio and CM9 I suddenly DONT get 4G and only 3G and H? What happened and how?

As for my experience I only get the following when I'm in an area that has it:
3G = HSPA
H = HSPA+
4G = LTE
Thats just based on my experience, right now I'm in an area with LTE and it comes up as 4G. Whenever I go back home down south and theres not LTE coverage I get 3G/H signals.

Actually in some ROMs that doesn't not show the right signal code. I always got the 4G in the screen even thou I am leaving in a country where theres no 4G support yet. I Know that the max connection I will get is the HSPA+

This is using CM9?
ICS Roms usually show 3G/4G/4GLTE of course some themes can also change this.

in a Samsung/AT&T based ROM, HSPA+ is shown as 4G, and real 4G has a tiny "LTE" under the 4G. This is a marketing gimmick recently started by AT&T.
I've seen my CM9 cycle through everything (E, G, 3G, H, 4G).
I don't live in a 4G area but visited one once. 3G and G usually don't work (for me), it shows 3G briefly when downgrading from H to E, G usually appears when I lose E, and then internet access completely.
E = EDGE (usually slower than 14.4k AOL from 15 years ago)
G = GPRS
On cm9 I'm in lte area with a 4g icon and getting 30+mbps down. This is certainly lte speed whether the icon denotes it or not. As stated above, the icon sets for internet speed / capability will vary rom to rom

I did a speedtest on 3g with my phone and compared with a iphone 5 also on 3g. My phone got .4 mbps and the iphone got over 1 mbps. Im just speechless here, since this makes no sence. 4g speeds are comparable with other devices on 4g, its just 3g thats the problem. Would it matter that im on cyanogenmod 11? Thanks
