Nexus 4 - Is it worth it? - General Questions and Answers

If you're lucky enough to live in a country supported by Google Play then this quotation might sound silly to you. But I'm from Iraq and I have to it from Amazon.
I know it's great device but it's sold from 440$ from Amazon which makes it about 500$ plus shipping(through third party), because no retailer sell it here.
I'm getting it for my brother for his graduation, he's (gonna be) a dentist, and it's gonna be the phone where he uses for his profession, so most important factors are speed (that's a given for the nexus) and reliability (like battery life).
Is it worth to get the nexus for that price ($500) or should I opt for another phone like the a note 2 or an xperia v/tx? Because I heard some bad reviews about the screen quality and battery life

Samsung, LG, and Sony had official retailers here, so it's about the same price you'll find online (e.g the Note 2 is around $680, S3 600, XT 420).

Buying a new smartphone

Hello everyone,
Can you offer me a good phone for the price of 450 USD? I've watched many reviews and the phones that caught my attention were Sony Xperia P, HTC One S...I'm also wondering about Xperia Arc S (which is cheaper), but you don't buy a new phone every month so I prefer something newer. So...I'm waiting for your advices and thanks in advance.
i would go with tge htc thats my opinion
You have a budget of $450? Go for the unlocked Gnex for $350, it has a big dev community and will get updates the fastest. In addition, JB with project butter has had outstanding results, similar in speed to how WP7 runs so smooth on single core 1ghz snapdragons.
if you don't mind the 5mp camera and on screen buttons, I say definitely get it

The one s is the better of the two,but you should consider other options too.

Yes, buy the HTC One S... you have a longer time fun with this device! And a really great support in this forum.
Before buying a new phone search for this:
1. Compatible with a stable version or Nightly version of CM9-10 or any other supported rom. (That means that is a device it’s currently developed.)
2. Listen what the device users say in the forums. (They have one they know their behavior problems)
3. Search for a recovery or a backup for the device OS. (You will be in guarantee so find a solution for any problem can succeed)
4. Look if the OS version is upper than 4.0 or recent 4.1.X (Gingerbread it's OK but it's going old each day, Jelly Bean seems a stable version)
5. Look the specs and the price. (Analyze the price with the specs it have)
Hope it was useful
Aahh, it's a tough decision. The One S has the more powerful CPU and the bigger screen, but I've read that the screen of the Xperia P is better (higher pixel density, plus that White Magic technology), the One S also lacks NFC (yeah, you can't do much with it now, but maybe in 2-3 years it will be useful). Tell me the pros and cons of the two.
Sorry for the stupid question but what's Gnex? Is it Galaxy Nexus and if it is, then where do I get it for $350 ?

Anyone think these might be good Phones

I have ordered stuff from this place many many times. Never Cell Phones. What are your guys options? They are cheap. Also does anyone know if any of these are being worked on by XPA developers? thanks
http://www.lightinthebox.com/c/android-cell-phones_3309
Never heard of them, quickly glanced at a couple and they seem to be 2-3 year old technology. Plus being they are trying to mimic popular phones I will also assume build quality is as cheap as the price hints at.
Granted I know nothing about these phones so take my opinion with a grain of salt... but I have almost always had less the good experiences with knock off brands from over seas
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
These definitely look interesting. Would be cool to get some hands on time. These are probably cheap Chinese phones that are garbage in functionality and build. If you have had good customer service from them and they have a return policy, then give it a try and let us know how it goes.

They're not cheap for what they are, cheap. If you buy one, you must have the mindset of a professional gambler, that the odds are in favour of the "House", and be prepared to lose everything.
They're not that cheap. You'd do better buying something off Craigslist.
But I did buy my son a Chinese knockoff of a Blackberry, dual SIM, any gsm radio standard in the civilized world, off ebay for $25. Seems pretty robust, nice display, music player, fm radio, works on any gsm mvno. Now that's good value.

I bought a couple ifauxnes a few years back as a prank... long story... but they appear as if they would be similar build quality to them which was sub par and exactly what I was expectfing. If you are planing on these to be your daily driver I would suggest picking up something else

These are Chinese phones...not implying that they are bad, it's just I would buy android phones with strong dev support. But interesting find indeed. Do make a review on them soon
There is a knockoff of every popular phone of the last year. Reminds me of the Simpsons going tv shopping. We have all the major brands magnetbox sorny
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Honestly, yes as everybody has mentioned, these seem to be knockoffs of other phones ( such as a the sgs3) and the hardware maybe a little bit behind, but they're cheap and you'll get what you paid for. I've read the reviews and almost all of them have a positive feedback, saying they love it, it's fast, fast shipping blahblahblah.
In the end, its all up to you, if you're looking for a cheap phone that will give you a bang for your buck.
Keep in mind that since it's not big time developers nor manufacturers, don't expect huge support.
As an added note to before, the few android knock off devices I've owned have been easy to root but you need to make your own changes to the kernel/ROM if you want too much more than is there already in android. But there are many auto scripts nowadays that allow you to much of this easy.
Don't expect too much quality hardware wise but for the most part android I'd android and if you're willing o chance it you maybe OK. Up until I got my nexus 7 I used one of a few of the knock off tablets I bought. One of them was real nice for the price, the other three I had to sell on eBay rather quickly as they were subpar

Bulk cost of the phone's parts don't always set the price. OP's link could possibly be a liquidation of assets, the already low cost of the phones themselves (probably parts cost of around $30-40, assuming they are using rockchip or allwinner chipsets) would need to be cut down if they need to move product to make room for new stuff.
more importantly, Alibaba/ Aliexpress is fairly risk-free for the buyer.
Description says dual core where title says quad. This is probably a dual core rock chip with a quad Mali GPU like most Android TV Sticks. Screen is 800x480 on a 4.4"... but supposedly has Bluetooth.
I've been around the block with these Chinese products and while it may work, expect a slow and buggy experience. I'm sure it won't support all the needed cell frequencies and dropping connections left and right. For $11 though it may be fun to just play with. Looks like the default OS is MIUI which is kinda cool.
Expect lots of Chinese apps and without root... Your stuck with them.

Samsung Galaxy S4 (Google Edition)

This will be the phone of my dreams. Will be getting it when it comes out. Will you? :good:
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-google-edition-real
It's nice but the price is a nightmare.
Paying Samsung 650 to unlock and run AOSP on S4.. That's how I see it.
The Google edition samsung galaxy s4 seems a little garbage to me. Why does it have capactive buttons instead of onscreen buttons, hence ruining the "nexus" experience.
Since it has LTE I bet its the qualcomm snapdragon processor, which means aosp roms for snapdragon S4s will be quite stable but exynos one will still have problems.
Anyone wanting a "pure" stock experience better get a nexus 4 or nexus 10.
price is the only problem
I still wonder why onboard storage is so low. Yes, I understand that you can use a SD which can get pretty big, but wouldn't it be better to have more than just 16GB for developers?
Why didn't they just upgrade the damn nexus 4 with LTE. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

High compared to what? If you look at what an unsubsidised, unlocked, off-contract S4 costs in the US, it's $629. The Google version is only $20 more, and that's probably not too bad considering that you should get OS version updates around the same time as the Nexus phones, not 6-12 months later.
If you're comparing the price to what you pay on a contract, of course it's more expensive. When you buy the phone on contract, the carrier pays part of the price because they know they can suck money out of you and you're contractually obliged to keep paying them. You win, but you also lose.
to everyone complaining about a 649 price tag, the GS4 of both variants (exynos and snapdragon) here in australia are like, 699 dollars outright unlocked at the cheapest....
I really don't think the price is that terrible. The S4 is a top of the line device that was not built with keeping the price down in mind. What's going to be stopping people though from just buying a regular S4 on contract or cheaper used then just waiting for this one to come out. Samsung is more than likely going to be providing the drivers therefore that could be of help to such AOSP roms like CM.
I wonder if it would be possible to just put the stock firmware on to carrier purchased S4 and receive updates straight from google that way. I think that should be possible considering the hardware is exactly the same.
everything is ok , just about the high price
Times they are a changin' folks. The days of carrier subsidized phones could be near. Soon we'll have a better feel for what the consumer will pay for a smartphone. This will put the hurt on phone manufacturers to set realistic price and profit margins.
i suspect the S4 Google Edition's initial unlocked price has more to do with taking advantage of bleeding edge, must have, first adopters. You know who you are. Knock yourselves out.
Uhh, $650 is about the price for an unsubsidized, unlocked premium phone. You Nexus folk are a little spoiled with Google selling you phones at wholesale price. GSM carriers would flip if Google sold the S4, wholesale.
It came as a big surprise when Google announced this, but it's an interesting move. I kinda wish they just upgraded the Nexus 4 though... LTE and more storage (or SD slot) and it would be the perfect phone.

native AOSP without voiding any warranties, with over the air updates that come earlier than any other S4 updates and no chance for bricking and probably a further 6 months or so of native (i.e. none/very few of the bugs) updates after samsung gives up on the S4

why are they shooting for cheap?? why not price it at 500-600 dollars but make it a quality phone?? show the world what they are capable of.

Price at £500, get x sales
Price at £300, get 2x sales + recognition as a reasonably pricing company, with a quality product, and a lot more factors.
It's business. That's why.
Why post this question? This is another useless thread.
Honestly the nexus 5's quality is on par with some of the higher end smartphones available right now. Admittingly the speakers and camera are not the best, but other than that it's a good phone. There's really no reason for most companies to jack up the price of their phones to $500-600. Just because it costs that much doesn't mean it's quality. If you look at how much it costs to build a nexus phone, vs a leading high end smartphone, you'll see there's not a lot of difference.
They want to put this phone in as many hands as they can. What do you think they make all that money from?
What do you mean? Google is barely charging a mark up. That's why its cheap. Not because they're using. Cheap parts

I think you're the only one here who believes this phone is cheap. Again as stated before, Google does not mark up their devices very much, thus creating a more affordable price. Samsung, HTC, Apple, everyone else will mark theirs up a lot more, but they also do this to pay the middle man (warehouses, retail stores, etc). Google sells their own hardware on their own website, so they're cutting out a lot of the middle men, thus keeping prices down.

i guess my expectations where just very high, and all we got was a mediocre phone that competes with early this year devices, gs4 and htc one etc...
Seems like people are really stuck on stats and fluff.
So if the N5 had aluminum, would that make it "premium"?
Does it need a 42MP camera, with 3.5GHz 8 core CPU, 4GB RAM, 4K display and 128GB ROM?
Why not make a smart phone that is truly smart, doesn't need bleeding edge stats to run AND be affordable. Oh, that's right Google has already done that with the Moto X and now N5.

You have had 15 phones in the past 39 months (a phone change every 2.6 months). I don't see why this is a big deal for you. If they did make a 'better phone' there would be an even better one released a couple months later. They are building a brand...normal people are starting to understand what a Nexus device is (and most can afford one). To put a whole new chipset in a phone requires substantially more money and carries more chances of bugs. Google is starting to influence hardware chip designs with Android's features and I am sure they have a plan to release a feature complete phone that is better than everything else in due time.
Stop complaining and enjoy your new toy.
Then the OEMS have no reason to complete other than custom skins. Like Microsoft and windows 8 tablet and phones
