[Q] Should I buy one??? - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks, I've got a chance to buy a 16 gig blue version for $220, without a dock. With all your user experience and knowledge of this device, as well as what's currently on the market, is it worth purchasing?
I guess I'm just a little on the fence since I already have a nexus 7 but have been looking for something with a larger screen and have been trying to decide as to whether I should wait and see what the tegra 4 products will look like in the next few months.
* How far along do you think this product is concerning its life cycle? Meaning, will this hold up for another year or so or be obsolete and not get a klp update?
* Are you happy with it now that you've had it for some time or would you have gotten something different?
Thanks in advance for all your advice and suggestions!!!

Get it :good:
I'm on a custom rom, so it'll last me another while and I can flash whatever I like which gives me freedom. I suggest that you take unlocking/ rooting your device into consideration.
If you are goingt to wait for the newest hardware, you will wait forever: there is always something newer coming up

Thanks for the feedback. You're right about chasing new technology as there's always something newer and better around the corner. So long as there's continued support and development for this, I think i'll jump in for one.

Get it!
I love this bad boy! And for the price it's totally worth it!
Life previous post stated. Custom ROM and kernel. This thing is perfect!
I have nothing negative to say about this tablet!

So did you end up getting it?

I did get it, thanks to all of your recommendations. I'm pleased so far with it but I definitely want to get my hands dirty with it and really get to flashing and tweaking. I only bought the tablet and it came with the usb/30 pin cable so I do need to get a wall wart for it.
Wish me luck and thanks again!!!

absolutely true, but a thing is to pine for the newest hardware, another thing is to blindly suggest an EOL platform.
tf300 is a sweet tablet but asus is phasing it out, this mean that on one side yo get some nice offers, on other hand you wont get any more official updates (probabily 4.2 but its not sure) and even xda developers will be jumping ship when they'll buy newer stuff in time.
I think that one should get a whole picture before buying it.

Absolutely true, but that is also the case with The Latest The Greatest. As long as there is plenty development (which there is for this platform with blokes as sbdags, surdu_petru & xplowild) one can have some fun for quite some time.
For example: with CM one can enjoy 4.2.2 already now

i hope this update solves my camera issue i really dont wanna return this
im told it will start rolling out first of next week, as soon as monday
I don't 100% love the transformer, but it is awesome. I do love how Asus is really putting a solid effort in. I've been pretty impressed at them staying on top of stuff.
for my 2nd gen tablet, I'll want something with a little less bezel... aka a tablet that isn't designed around a keyboard dock
Good work Asus!
yeah they been pretty good about the support I also like how they been puttting the updates on the asus website
I am not 100% impressed with honeycomb. But Google is willing to roll the dice and figure it out after release. I am sure 6 months from now we will all be very happy.
Lol that's how everything is now. Manufacturers so eager to get to the market half the time the roll off products halfway done and fix things as they go.
Must be close to done if they're sending it to the press.

I think you mean released, at least when I hear the term "dropped" it means it's been cancelled.
I thought it's canceled
Same here. I have just read the other thread in General about 3.1 and then I saw this one on Dev subforum and thought... Have they already dropped it? But if it's not still out...
Until I opened the thread and read it.
Regards.
Id love for it to come out monday but as a working man, in all reality, monday is memorial day, wtf would they release it on a holiday?

They should review the fixes that were applied.

Dropped in the younger generation means it is released. This comes from the music industry..
i thought it was cancelled as well, but phew! im very glad to see that asus is right on the ball with the updates, worse thing is when you get a beautiful piece of hardware and then find out you have no support for it, good on ya asus!

That's not a custom rom, but anyways... dock firmware still 209? Seems a bit weird since its mentioned a new firmware will be out...

[Q] Ok, I have the transformer. One question

So I love my TF101. I mean it is awesome. Well, worth it.
But will I still get Android updates even though the new TF is released?
Or do I send this back and wait for the TF2? I guess I feel that maybe bought this too late in the game

You've got at least 4 months before the TF2. And even then, do you really want to jump on the very first Tegra 3 device before it's been real-world tested for a little while? If there are problems, you'll be in line with every other launch-day enthusiast trying to RMA or get a repair. I've seen it before.
Anyway, yes, you'll updates as long as the device is supported, which should be at least 1-2 years more, and that's not counting the development community here and elsewhere that might keep things going even longer.

As soon as you buy 1 device its already too late in the game. If you want the latest and greatest you will either never own anything or need to be a millionaire. Im sure Asus will continue to update the TF when the TF2 comes out but don't expect the TF2 until Q2 of 2012 anyway

[Q] CM10/custom kernel/unlock questions

I love CyanogenMod, but i've never spent any time messing around with kernels for any of my devices, I've left them all stock. What are the advantages to using a custom kernel with CM10? also, will i need to root to flash CM10, or am i safe just unlocking? and lastly, (this may be the wrong place to ask, but its worth a shot) Will CM10's ota updater work with TWRP?
sorry if any of that is noobish, i've flashed plenty of roms before (and even killed a captivate!) but i've never messed around with much more than that. Thanks!!
You can overclock with different kernel
How much does overclocking affect battery life?

More power i.e. more overclocking you give your device the more juice it uses! Hard to really put numbers on it as it all depends on what you do and how you use your device. But for certain it will drain your battery life more and may make your device warm.
I don't think its necessary as its a bloody quad core in it already with an extra core for simple tasks. Unless you are playing some totally intense game (which I don't do) you might need to do it.
Okay, sounds reasonable. I really want to put CM10 on it, but i dont want to lose the ability to get OTA updates if i decide to go back to stock :/

Yeah, I kinda struggled with the fact that I would void my warranty and not be able to get OTA updates too. I struggled with it for about 30 minutes, then flashed TWRP. lol The thing to remember is that most of these guys building the custom ROMs will add the updates when they get the chance. Really, the only thing you're going to miss out on is the warranty.
I'm running the Paranoid Android ROM which is a CM10 hybrid. I'm also running the Untermensch kernel which allows me to overclock up to 1.7GHz. I usually run it at 1.5 and am very pleased with the overall look and performance.
Here it is if you would like to read up on it.

Thanks man, that helps a lot! i'll check out that rom!
Is the difference between Gorrilla Glass and the TF300 enough to keep me worried about the warranty? I have faith that Cyanogenmod will stay updated long after Asus drops support, so all im really worried about now is the screen.
EDIT: also, how do i find the untermensch kernel? i find many posts/threads referencing it but im not entirely certain as to what im looking for (i want to run plain ol' official CM10 with the untermensch kernel)

According to Asus, the tablet has hardened glass. I really don't know how that compares to Gorilla glass though. I've read where several people have dropped theirs and the glass didn't break. Still, I wouldn't push it. Lol
The Untermensch kernel for Paranoid Android is in the OP for the ROM. You will need to use the one in that thread because it has been modified to work with Paranoid Android.
There is also a kernel directory in the development section. It has a list of most of the kernels.
EDIT:
I just wanted to add that the keyboard works great with Paranoid Android. I just bought mine the other day and it really nice. There are a few of the custom ROMs in here that the dock/keyboard will not work properly with.

Very informative, thank you!! I've been debating on whether or not to get the keyboard, are there any real advantages aside from the facts that it extends the battery and has a hardware keyboard, or do those alone justify it? Sorry I have so many questions haha

The keyboard not only extends the battery, it also has a USB port and full size sd card slot. The touchpad really comes in handy too. Oh don't let me forget about all the short-cuts on the keyboard. It has a back key (back screen), bluetooth, lock, volume, brightness, media player, wifi and quite a few others. It also comes in handy when you want to watch a movie. No prop needed.Just open it up and it sits there like a mini laptop with touch screen features!!! I'm very happy with it so far.
I really got a good deal on mine I think.
I went to Office depot and asked them if they would match the Wal-mart online price which was $119. I actually just threw the question out there with little hope of them accepting it. I told them that I was wanting a black one and asked if that's what they had. The manager said no, all he had was blue. I told him I would take it if he would match the price. To my surprise, the manager looked it up on the computer, said YES and I ended up walking out of Office Depot with a blue dock/keyboard for $119. They usually sell them for $149.

I agree. I seriously considered buying an N7 but decided to go with the TF300T 32 gb for quite a few reasons. The 10 inch screen, internal storage, micro sd card, dock, performance, development and a few others reasons. Right now I've got the $418 invested in the tab and dock plus a Sandisk 32gb class 10 card i caught on sale from the Best Buy website for $17 (great deal). I can honestly say that for what I've got invested, I'm very happy with the TF300T and accessories. If I had to do it all over again knowing what I know now, I would make the same choices.
The docks that Wal-mart had were out of stock the last time I checked. If they are carrying them for $119 when they restock, that would be a good deal. I lucked up when the manager at Office Depot matched the on-line price. Retailers usually won't do that for items on-line.

UPDATE:
I just checked on the Walmart site and they've gone up to $127. I guess I got lucky when doing my search and seeing it at $119. The manager at Office Depot did a search on the Walmart site to make sure he was matching their price and saw the $119 price too. They must have changed it right after I bought mine.

I am out -- Good bye

Hey everyone, It has come time for me to leave. As much fun as it has been in here for the last year plus, it is time for me to move on. I have noticed that a lot of our core group has really been moving on as well.
I will forward the information on how to fix the boot sequence for the CM based ROMs to alteredlikeness so that he can put that into the next builds for his CM based work.
I will still be in and out once in a while, and I will still be on IRC and help out the other devs in the background, but I will not be hanging out in here everyday as I have been. I have put my Atrix2 up for sale, and I am in the process of getting a galaxy nexus to run the new ubuntu phone OS on, and I am going to switch to working only on that for dev work for the time being.
It has been great and I wish everyone the best of luck and best wishes.
Well damn. Best of luck to you good Sir!!!

Yeah this was a really hard decision, and after thinking on it for most of the holidays and then Ubuntu making their announcement, I knew that is what I was really after, and where I really would LOVE to spend my free time.
I am in no way abandoning you or anyone here, and I will still answer my PMs, because I will still be participating on XDA, I will just be focusing on the ubuntu phone OS instead. As I said I will still hang out in our IRC rooms and check in here every so often, but I am sure it will be less and less as time goes on.

Thank you! Same to you.
I am hoping to see some of you guys on the Ubuntu side of the fence soon. I saw several people note that they were excited, and a used Galaxy Nexus is not very expensive right now, and it has an HSPA+ radio just like this phone, so.... it should be pretty close, but that it is more like the SGS3 in hardware, and it is fully unlocked like the SGS3. I am also keeping the SGS3 and going to work to get that on Ubuntu too, so for those that have that phone too, I will still see some of you over there, with hopefully some great ubuntu work that I will be doing.
I decided this after my last attempt at killing the bootloader on this phone frustrated me so much, and the fact that I have 2 devices that are unlocked right now that I can do anything I want with, that this was my only real reason for doing this (freedom).
I have also noticed that the dynamic has changed in here as of late, and that just gave me the extra push to move forward.
Again, you all have fun and keep the good stuff flowing in here and I will speak to everyone soon I hope.
Thanks!
Thanks for all you work!
I recently purchased 2 lapdocks to use with my Raspberry Pi. While waiting for my HDMI adapters to show up from China [still waiting], I got bored and bought an atrix2 this past weekend and was excited to find that you had done some great work with WebTop.
Sadly my atrix2 was already OTA ICS as I was stoked to have a real desktop OS running on this phone. However, I understand the need to move on.
Looks like I'll need to pick up a Galaxy Nexus soon!
I think it's a wise move on your part.. all of us, and especially you, are limited by Moto's lockdown.. and I too am really looking forward to Ubuntu for phones.. they are going to change things and contribute to mobile OS's in a big way. Good things will come of this, and I will definitely be joining you in dev'ing it in the future...
Without being too dramatic - we will keep pushing forward with the foundation that basically you alone put together here.. until we all eventually move on to other devices... sigh.. everything's so fleeting..
Thanks again, Jim! Ttyl..

Btw, even i'm contemplating getting a Galaxy Nexus.. maybe in a month when the salary comes
My best regards to you Jim, one of the best around.
Will certainly miss you sir, and all the hard work you've brought to this community.
Does your supersekrit CM10 builds feature the work that you had done towards webtop, or should I simply enjoy the devices that I have au natural and not worry about being on bleeding edge of cool?
Thank you again, and enjoy your new toys.
Regards.
^+1. Yah we'll miss u Sir! Have a great time
life!
Motorola pretty much made it impossible to do anything proper with this phone, which is sad because hardware wise it's about as solid as they come. It's been an uphill fight since day one, and we couldn't have had a better fighter for our cause. Like many others, I want to say thank you for helping us along keeping this phone up to par. I'm due for an upgrade, so I'm sure I'll be bugging you in another forum before you know it. Thanks Jim.

There might still be one or two things I have hidden up my sleeve that I may still release soon.
As far as the bootloader goes, yeah that is not getting unlocked. I tried for a little more than a year. I know when to finally call it quits. I really had a good one there with the rootkit and booting off the sdcard, but there were still checks that moto has for that too, so....
As I said earlier in this thread, my time in here is going start to taper off slowly and over time I will just fade off into the sunset... LOL.

I do remember seeing a thread where you said it was working and we just need c coders now.. if kexec dosent hard brick, I guess a little can be ported from RAZR.. also now that retail phones have jb, maybe we can use the boot img from it for att phones as well..

Porting does not work on the A2. We have NEVER been able to successfully port any ROMS to the A2, but don't let me stop you from trying, if you can get it too boot and all the hardware and a kernel working, more power to you! I gotta say that would be pretty sweet, but since we have figured out the secret of compiling and using our kernel as a base, and compiling open source roms like that, we/you can have any roms you basically want now, with the stock kernel still on the phone.
Yes kexec works, since I helped with kexec. There was a post that I did post about it. We do not have any ROMS that take advantage of it though.
you are the best dude!! Thanks for the ROMs:crying: but hope u change ur decesion

happy camper now that my infinity is unlocked and rooted.

Did think it was that easy.... had the tablet for 6 months and didn't bother unlocking or rooting cause it looked annoying, can't believe I didn't do it earlier now. I wouldn't say its a completely new tab experience, but I can say Im not thinking about getting s nexus 10 anymore. So if you feel your infinity isnt on par... unlock and root. It's worth it.

I couldn't agree more. Actually I was in the same position and state of mind... You know, all about "what about my warranty etc.".
By the end, I got pissed not using the TF700 just because it was laggy and not as expected. The basic thought was just that I bought a device for 700€, I just need to use it at it's utmost, or at least as I would like to use it.
I took the risk to root, on CM10.1 Nightly. Well, that was quite fast and now it's a new tablet. As Jojo said it definitively worth the switch to a custom rom.
For those who are afraid, as I was, please note that "custom rom" can no more be related to "unstable and testing". There is really reliables and stables release from highly qualified programmers (CM10,AOKP/AOSP, CROMI....).
Unless you only use the tablette to listen music without touching I really recommend to jump on a CRom.

Anyone who thinks that the nexus 10 is a good replacement for the infinity is nuts. I work in a tech store and have access to the nexus 10 and the ipad 4 (or ipad retina), the infinity dances circles around them and is way more productive. The infinity can replace laptops, unless you need high end software to edit videos, pictures, or data (stats software). The development on the infinity also rivals any other device out there. If you install CROMI you will understand, it has better support and updates than any other ROM out there. It also squashes them in terms of performance. At this point no software on my infinty is stock other than apps, and i couldnt be happier. Not many devices have a custom bootloader, kernel, governors, scheduler, ROM, theme, and UI mods that work to create a comprehensive and kickass system.
Agreed
I am with you, I only had my tablet for a month or two before not being able to stand it. But once I put CleanRom on it, it flies. Makes it worth it all the more, and those who have not done it yet, are missing out. However, before doing anything make sure you spend lots and lots of time looking up on how to do so!!!

Agreed.
I lasted 6 weeks and got pissed off with the constant native browser crashes..several sites that I frequent have Flash and only the native browser supports it properly. Didn't care about the warranty really, it is only for a year and it looks like I've got a decent device.
After I got over the "scared to break something", it was quite easy. Now just to keep up with the CROMI updates. It doesn't take long to patch at least.

This thread has it all Also, refer to Post 2 in that same thread for additional stuff.
I think by the time I gathered everything, read as much as possible, it took about 2 hours from start to finish.
There's also a youTube video in that thread. The software that he used was much easier in my opinion.

If you're having Flash issues, try Boat Browser. Flash works perfectly. It's nice to watch a CNN stream nice and smooth in Flash on this big screen.
