[Q] charger question

Hello,
I have a micro usb charger that cam with my hp touchpad. looking at the label it seems like it supplies a 2A current as opposed to the 1A our phone takes. Can i use it on the G2x resulting in faster charging or will i damage the battery?

You can use it as long as it supplies the correct the voltage. I use a 2amp charger with my G2X and I love how fast my phone charges. The phone will only draw as much as it can.

A faster charge results in a hotter battery. Some people think fast charging the battery is also the cause of the infamous SOD (Sleep of Death). Keep an eye (or ahnd) on your phone and make sure it is not getting too hot while on the charger.

The hotter the battery goes, the shorter the battery life span will result as li-ion battery doesn't quite like in hot temp. Never tried a 2A charger to charge my G2X, so I would not know. But I am using a 1A charger to it and it works great If 2A charges does not cause the battery to go too hot, it should be fine.

I've been using this charger since May with no issues. The battery will only draw as much as its capable of drawing. As long as the voltage is the same as the stock charger then there is no issue. You could connect it to a 5 amp charger and it would still only draw the 1.x amps its designed to draw.

Going too low on amperage is where you have to be careful.

+1 on that, LG may be dumb, but they're not dumb enough to let their phone overload with un-needed electricity.

New battery charger

Hello,
my battery charger stopped working and i need a new one. I read a few review and i'm a bit confuesd, not every chargers with the capability to deliver 1000mAh works with every device. So which one oft them works with the desire s and delivers 1000mAh and not just 500mAh?

just buy a oem wall charger ,, easily found on ebay and also cheap

does it has any difference between 1000 and 500mah chargers? now i'm using original liveview charger with 500mah on it but also have 1A iPhone charger.

I also have a 1A charger (coming from a SGS3), but I haven't had any problem

Overheating
im using an old S2 charger i think, its got an output of 5V, 0.7 amps and after flashing a costom rom, jellyfirebean im getting serious overheating issues, but only while charging with the phone on.
however i cant confirm this is the chargers problem yet
just a note, its the phone that heats up not the charger

Double that. Overheating can be only caused by the phone itself, or a defected battery (means it is near death, but for serius heating, you will notice like 1hrs of battery life for the phone).
On another note for the topic. I use 3 type of chargers for my phones:
At home my ASUS tab's one (which is rated 5V 1A at the standard USB, plus the extra for the dock, but it is ASUS specific), at work an old ZTE "dumbphone" charger (which is rated 5V 0.75A, and is a high frequency switching type, so really energy-efficient) and for any other my old SE X8's one, which is 5V 650mA (which is also switching type). Also dedicated charger cables, 1 nokia, 1 SE, 1 HTC and 1 ZTE at my car.
The phone's original 5V 1A is NRFB at the box of the phone, but I have a security backup Samsung charger (rated 5V 500mA and pass-trough type, so not really efficient, but stable) which works just fine. The S is not capable (or not enabled just yet) of fast charge mode AFAIK so no really chance for 500mA or more when charging (even when GPS and 3G on, and screen on max, which is aroung 430mA when I last measued it with a service cable).

yeah i can confirm it was the 2 year old htc battery
i am now using 2 anker 1600mah batterys and they last a LOT longer + come with an enternal charger so i always have one charged, it also charges the old htc battery too externally so i can now use 3 battieries mwahahahaa
note i did have to delete battery stats in cwm to recalibrate

charging with powerbank but with output only 1.2A

,,i have a powerbank with 5200mAh and the output of the powerbank only 1.2A..the output original charger galaxy s4 is 2.0A
is it safe if i charge with my powerbank?because it has different output. i already used the powerbank to charge my s4 and it takes really long time. it takes about 3 - 4 hours for full charged.. the question that i want to ask is, is it okay to use powerbank with output only 1.2A to charge my sgs4? if it will make my battery life reduce, i will stop to use it and buy another powerbank with output 2.1A
please help me

It's all fine to use. The phone will only take what is needed. Granted, it will take longer to charge using the 1.2A compared to the 2.1A.

I use a seperately bought genuine samsung charger that comes with s3 to charge my s4 sometimes! No probs at all.
I use it for my S2 as well!

it is ok, but why not to choose a N x USB portable charger power bank.

Might be your cable. Have you tested it with the OEM cable you got? Or compared the data reading from the oem charger.
I think the OEM charger + cable will give you 1400-1900 mah.
Which program are you running to read the current?

It will be fine to charge your device with lesser output than your charger do. Just do a little math here, your 2600 mah battery will charged to full capacity (from fully discharged) in about an hour charging time with a 2.6 A charger. So with original charger that has charging capacity of 2.0 A it will be fully charge in about 1 hour 18 min. Then if you charge it with your 1200 mAh power bank, it will fully charge in about 2 hour 10 min. Well i assuming here all power efficiency is at 100%. Hope this will help.

Moto G wall charger

I have ordered a Moto G from England (GSM global version I presume), and while I am waiting for it to arrive, I would like your advice on what kind of wall charger to buy that would be optimal for the phone charge recommendations since my knowledge on the issue is very minimal.
I read somewhere that Motorola recommends between 0.5 - 1.5A , but that doesn't really tell me anything.
I have an old Samsing galaxy SII. Can I use the charger of the Galaxy for the Moto G? The output is 0.7A

As you said, any charger where the output is not too high (I recommend below 2a or below 2,5 to not stress the battery.
Conclusion: your samsung charger should work perfectly!
Edit: if you experience bad/not so good battery life (I did after update to kitkat), let your phone drain completely (shuts down) and recharge it to 100% and leave plugged in like 30-1h after it reached 100%.
But don't do this too often as it will harm your battery over time.

Using a charger over 2A doesn't stress the battery because the Moto G limits the current to 1.5A.

Im using a HTC charger i already had which is rated at 1a ,seems to be working fine.

my 0.5A from 20% to 100% ~3 hours. When charging from less than 20%, I often put my phone to aeroplane mode and get ~3 hours of charging too

Since I dont live in the US, amazon is kind of useless to me since there are very few items they ship outside the US, so eBay would be a better option. I just dont want to buy something crappy

I use a Blackberry branded 0.75mah micro usb charger which works well as does my Samsung Galaxy Tab2 which is 2amp charges nicely too.
I found an older HTC usb 0.7 charger did not work at all well for some reason.

charger doesn't push power, phone draws power, as long as you have the right voltage you are good

Indeed but I've found some chargers vary for example my Samsung 2amp Galaxy Tab2 charger will not charge my Moto Defy+ phone, it sits there forever doing very little but the Moto G is fine with it. Probably due to the Defy+ only drawing 500mah and the Galaxy charger sees this as undercurrent and doesn't output whereas the MotoG can demand up to 1500mAh current which the Galaxy charger sees as acceptable and supplies the current.
I'd avoid any of the super cheap nasty Chinese crap chargers that seem very poorly built, unstable and potentially a death trap.

Sorry I meant to quote the advice above that said don't get something with too large a current.
Absolutely avoid cheap chargers, burnt home totally not worth the savings. The hp chargers left from the time they used to make tablets are pretty good actually, tested with an oscilloscope

I dont want a crappy cheap Chinese charger. Thats why I am asking for a recommendation. I have a nexus 7 2013 and the output is 2A. I assume I can use it also to charge the Moto G?

I'm curious, is your 2A charger for a 2012 Nexus 7? Because I also plan to use my 2012 Nexus 7 charger on my Moto G, which is coming next week. How quickly does it charge the Moto G?

Yeah my nexus 7 is a 2012 model also, works just fine and charges really fast. I'll stopwatch my next recharge and report.
Edit: It charges from 10% to 100% in 2 hours with my nexus 7 2012 2A charger while incidentally using it.
Next charge I'll try my HTC 1A charger to monitor the difference

fast charge is generally a feature that needs to be built into a custom kernel

Don't know about you but my S5 chargers incredibly fast compared to my SIII and Nexus 7. Even with fast charge on.

Agree, my S5 charges at 1.2A given a charger capable of this, and that is fast.

Yes, the S5 charges at 2amp. (Kernel reports 1800mah)
If your phone is reporting that it charges any slower than that, it's an energy deficiency of the charger supply, bad cable, or bad micro usb connection.

I use an app which reports charging current. With a standard micro usb cable i never morw than 1200 mA (and about 450 mA from a PC/mac usb plug)

While it's true that the phone ships with a 2A charger, the charging current does not exceed 1.2A AFAIK.

Gotta love MicroUSB 3.0.

It already charges from under 10% to 100% in a mere 2 something hours (bundled charger and USB 3 cable). You want something much faster than that???

Yes I think in the end it is something around this current. What the apps report is more "charging in 1800mA mode" and not really charging with continous/real 1800mA. If you like to know more exactly what the current is you may write down time/percentage values for e.g. every 5% of battery power starting with an nearly empty battery. Then you can draw an line of the effective loading current.
With the original charger you should be able to get stable 1800mA but if the loading circuit of the S5 really goes this high I did not check.

I believe it peaks at 1800mah with the screen off. It is 1200 mah limited when screen is on.

As most of you, my S5 reported charging at stable 1200 mA with wall charger, probably 1800mA when turned off.
But, I can say a custom rom unleash battery charging in the same conditions as stock rom. I get stable 1800 mA with LineageOS, even screen on, with original charger and usb 2 or usb 3 cable.
