Looking for USB Car Cigarette Lighter Adapter

I have had about 5-6 of these.. every one I get my hands on is junk. When using the GPS, with the phone pluged in (non stock cable) I still end up killing my battery dead. The second it comes off the charger is turns off.
Can anyone point me in the direction of one that charges correctly?

I use my wife's from Verizon and it seems to work ok. It has a USB port so I can use my normal, thick data cord. You're probably running into ones where the cord is too thin to give proper charge. This one works great with the data cord.

I have the Samsung car dock. It seems to do fine with just GPS. I don't think the Epic can draw enough current to maintain it's charge if you're using any other features. If I'm running GPS + Streaming Music, it will discharge eventually and become very hot.
You need
1. a reasonable quality USB charging cable so that the Epic will draw the maximum current, or a power adapter that grounds the data pins. If the epic thinks it's connected to a computer it won't draw the maximum current.

*Griffin agreed to fix it, but it's been several weeks since I sent it in. I'm a little unhappy with them at the moment, but the adapter was fine until it broke, maybe you'll have better luck.

Not as strange as you might think. As the pre/pixi charger is 1amp allowing it to power the touchstone with enough current. Most
12v lighter plug USB adapters are .5amps.
Also the pre/pixi lighter plug charger requires the cable that comes with it. And although it is a micro usb the end that goes in the lighter plug is not standard its thinned and narrower.

+1 on the pre charger... been using one since I had the pre, and it is awesome. phone still discharges when streaming pandora and running GPS, but GPS by itself results in a very slow net charge on my drive to work.
We sell a case logic brand charger at work for 15 bucks that is rated at 800mA, used it a few times and know a few people that have one. I'm sure online price is cheaper.

ive never had that problem mine always charges no matter what

I get mine off of EBay. Just make sure its output is 1amp.

USB and DATA cable
That's because if you use a USB adapter and a DATA cable the phone only charges at half it's rating. This is because it thinks it's pulling the power from a computer USB port and it doesn't want to overload (and fry) the port.
I picked up one of these, opened it up and soldered the two middle USB pins together. Now it allows my phone to charge with a data cable at it's max rate.

there are pretty sweet power inverters that run 30ams, so you can plug in laptops and such. pretty compact, AND they come with 2 usb charging ports.
there under 50 bux.

I use a j-lo brand car charger. Its for a gps and charges @ 1000mah. I also have a power inverter, the cheap one from walmart with 2 ac outlets and 1 usb port. Both of these work very well.

Ok so i ordered my 32GB Touchpad from amazon.com and i guess they will send me the US version which will include the american charger. So i was wondering if its possible to switch it to the EU version.

It's just a USB charger so, in theory, you should just be able to buy one and use the supplied micro USB lead.
That's the theory but I've just tried it and got some unusual results.
The supplied HP charger is 5.3v 2A. I used a cheap Chinese USB charger that I got from eBay that says it produces 5.0v 1A. It charged the battery but if you try and use the tablet while it's on charge you get deadspots on the screen, random multitouch gestures (most noticable in the browser) and slight freezes and stuttering. If I unplug the touchpad and run it on battery it works perfecty and if I use the supplied HP charger it also works flawlessly.
Moral of the story - make sure the charger you use is man enough for the task. HP sell a travel charger kit, you might be easier to just get that.

That's probably because the rating is at 1A. Plus you did say it's a "cheap chinese charger".
Just use any decent USB charger that matches the power requirement of the unit and it should suffice.
Why don't you try getting a converter? All mobile products come with universal chargers that support 110v to 220v

my european HP Touchpad-Powersupply hast 5V/2Ah so a normal USB-Power-Supply wouldnt have enough power.
But you could convert, at your own risk, a 5V power supply from a active USB-Hub to power the USB-A Connector

If you are in the UK, Maplin have USB chargers rated at 5V 2.1A that should do the trick.

i already ordered it from DX since it was so cheap but i have some fears since it looks kinda 'cheap'? i dont want it getting fried, you know

I got mine yesterday and it seems the microusb cable has a short in it...as it doesnt work properly and wont charge. I tried using my old BB microusb and it wouldnt work becasue its a type A microusb, and the HP Touchpad uses a type b micro usb. I am having it replaced under warranty but I went ahead and ordered a few more from meritline, and they are easily found all over the web. For right now im using my old evo microusb until the new ones arrive.
Make sure you get a microusb 2.0 type b if you plan to replace the cable.

Don't worry I have like 10 of them from DX, all working perfectly
In fact this is not converter, what it does it simply change a shape of flat to round (for 220v), rest is done by the charger itself, as it support 220v...

Most of my other USB chargers are exactly 5.0V and only change the Amperage... usually from 0.5 to 1A but there the more the merrier, right?
This is the first one with >5.0V
Can i charge my other stuff with it? i'm still scared to plug my nexus one to it... always thought usb specs were 5.0-sharp-Volts.

It'll work just fine. The USB specification is for power output devices to deliver and for consumer devices to accept voltage between 4.75v and 5.25v.

My Desire HD uses a 0.5 A charger, the Touchpad will take 118 weeks to charge.
I also bought an American Touchpad, i'm just going to use a UK to US adaptor with the supplied HP charger.

Ordered mine today, says 10-14 days shipping directly from fasttech. When I get it ill throw up some pics and a review on how it works.

500-700 mA is perfectly ok for charging. When you charge from a computer via USB, the max current is 500 mA unless you use kernel tweaks.

It's got to depend on the output (mA) the USB power adaptor has to offer too. They even show it connected to a laptop USB port. So I think it WILL charge, but maybe significantly slower than a direct power connection.
By using a lower output USB power supply, sounds like you might be able to trade charge speed with temperature rise. If so it may be ideal as a charger to keep your phone topped up. Kind of like a low power trickle charger, which would be fine if my phone is on it most of the day... I actually don't like the idea of Qi chargers that make the phone get hot - seems to be trading convenience and wear on the phone's USB connector with reduced battery service life as it keeps going through nasty heat cycles?

not sure about that, it might charge If your not doing anything, but say if using gps it might not supply enough juice to charge fast enough

I agree, Used in a car with GPS on, maybe pulling 3G data for maps, bright screen, etc., it's likely that despite this charger, the phone will slowly go flat. And get hot doing so... All that energy from the battery/charger has to go somewhere - mainly heat once the battery is charged. If the phone's consuming, say 750mA at around 4.1v battery voltage, that's around 3W of heat to dissipate.

I am investing time looking for a Qi charger but that problem appears to be present on several cheap alternatives, the current they supply is not enough, or you might expend a couple of extra hours charging your phone

Just a quick update, ordered from fast tech on Jan 29th and received shipping notification today (Jan. 31st), registered airmail with tracking from Hong Kong post.

I do have this wireless charger. Ordered from aliexpress, it's always the same with different branding and logos.
It does the job, charging.
But:
Need to be very precise when positioning it
Back glass make the phone sliding, and cancel all the effort offered in the above point, making the phone not charging
I recommend to wait for a charger with more than only one wireless charging chip/antenna.

Ok I have this charger now. On first charge and working ok so far... Seems to be best in this position. Has now cut off an an indicated 99%...

Lining up the edge of the charger with where the bottom of the LCD is, seems reliable. Using an XtremeGuard style protector on the back, which gives enough friction to stop sliding if the charger is horizontal and the phone vibrates.
Above is FastTech image. I'm using stock N7 charger and cable at the moment because it was handy. Unit came with a USB charger and cable (with EU plug - I'm UK based)

Picked up phone and used it to 98%. Returned to charger and it charged back to 99%, but didn't beep this time when charging started. Maybe it needs to be more discharged before this happens....

Now at 100%. Charger seems to poll the Nexus about every 30 secs (solid blue light for a few secs) to see if it needs charging. Then light goes off. When it charges, the blue light flashes slowly but continuously.

Did anybody try the Large models?
For some reason they are cheaper even though they come in black or white and have the Qi logo/writing on it.

They are reported to work. I wanted the flexibility of being able to use alternate sources of power (car, pc, wall adaptor). have yet to try limited power available from a PC's USB port...

Wireless charging

The only thing stopping this from being a perfect phone is wireless charging.
Maybe Sony will release an add-on to give it Qi capabilities?
How about using the Qi adapter into the micro-sd connector route? Would it retain waterproofing if it was plugged in?

No idea, i would assume that it wouldn't matter if anything is plugged into it, however that adapter isn't really dubbed as being waterproof so while the phone is waterproof the adapter certainly isn't.

USB port on the Z5 isn't covered with a rubber flap, so it must be able to withstand water bridging the wires in there, so I think it's safe to assume, as long as no power is applied until it's completely dry, just having something plugged in shouldn't hurt it . Though, as stated, the Qi receiver itself may not fair so well.

Infuriating
Its so frustrating when companies go backwards with tech; big names like Sony should be able to add things to their products not take them away! The Z3 had magnetic charging and even my Z1 which is due for upgrade soon has a magnetic charging port.....! It doesn't seem like the Z5 has come on leaps and bounds since the Z1 which I would have expected by now!

I tried the wireless Qi card on the Z5, it works out to be about 10+% per hour but the phone really heats up.
Decided against it and went back to charging the normal way.

It's a shame that they removed the Magnetic Dock i was already planing on buying that phone, but after i saw it today in a Store i'm really not so sure anymore if i will actually buy it :/
I think i will just sit this one out and wait for the Z6 and hope that Sony will listen to us customers and give us the dock back or add qi charging into the phone without something from a third party.

Don't think magnetic charging will come back....

To be honest, I charge my phone once a day, when I go to bed. I had Wireless charging on my Note 3, I don't have it on my Z5... and I don't miss it

Cheap solution/alternative for lack of wireless charging! Turbocharge confirmed!

If you are like me and miss the simplicity of wireless charging I have found a solution. If you have never heard of znaps it started as a kickstarter to bring magnetic charging to any Microsd, USB type C or lightning devices (similar to Mac). I preordered mine but the wait was killing me since it does not ship until January. I did a quick google search and found another company who is selling this technology on Amazon so I quickly ordered it with next day delivery and I have to say it works perfectly. It has a strong magnet and can be connected with ease either direction. It DOES support turbocharge, at first I had a bad cable but the new cable works. Installation and removal can be a little tough because you have to use force but they give you a tool to remove (trust me it will stick out and not go all the way in unless you push hard). It also supports sync as well but I really haven't put that through it's paces yet.
Now I am going to keep my znaps order going to test the two. Not sure if it supports fast charging.
Znaps has some pros:
1. You can use your existing cables. With this you have to order multiple cables for cars and so on.
2. The price is cheaper for the connectors
3. It is smaller (both insert and cable tip
So if you want something that connects quickly and without hassle and something that can go both ways give it a try.

I'm not sure but I doubt it. I think we will have better luck with znaps. I'm still waiting to hear back from their support. It charges slow so I would plan on getting this if you are like me and don't mind charging over night. For turbo charge you'll want to remove. I only charge at night so it works well

Can you transfer or sync data with the cable? If you can, you can turbo charge.

OP, have you tried using your Turbo Charger with this cable? I'm seeing a few reviews that say that it can be charged with quick charge....

I can't try the charger that came with the phone since the cable is built in however I did try a quick charge 2.0 charger I purchased off amazon (this one) and it still has a slow charge. It's perfect to hold me over until znaps is out but it does take it's time.
I haven't tried that charger with a regular cable to make sure there is nothing wrong with the new charger but I can do that this afternoon.

I tried one of these to, but I think znaps will be better. My problem with these is the size. It's not really compatible with any cases. It does work with quickcharge, the notification LED would have to be facing upward though. Otherwise normal charge. And after getting it yanked back out, the usb port is forever stretched out. cables aren't as tight anymore.
The better solution for wireless charging would be one of the wireless receivers sandwiched between the phone and a case.

30 minutes on a wireless charger would equal around 8% charge increase on an MXPE.
30 minutes on the QC2.0 charger equals around 65% charge increase.
So, you can stick your phone on a wireless charger for an hour to get 16% life added, or I can stick mine on the cord for 8 minutes to get the same.

Another good thing about Znaps's design is that there is an adapter on the wire side, so don't need new wires/adapters. Can't wait...

It does work with quickcharge, the notification LED would have to be facing upward though. Otherwise normal charge. And after getting it yanked back out, the usb port is forever stretched out. cables aren't as tight anymore.
The better solution for wireless charging would be one of the wireless receivers sandwiched between the phone and a case.

I'm wondering if the piece that goes into my phone is defective. It does not quick charge in either direction. I will try swapping it out when I get home. Did you use this with the moto x?
EDIT: @regalpimpin So after removing the insert I had I verified my quick charger 2.0 would turbocharge by using a standard cable. Then I put in the other insert and still no turbocharge. So I'm not sure how you tested but mine will not turbo charge. I didn't notice the cable being loose after this device so I'm assuming you tried with a different phone/tablet?

I got the cable Friday, and tested it on the pure. The little pamphlet it comes with explains the charging. It will charge normally either way it's plugged in. But the data/ and therefore the quick charge only works plugged in the one way. I tested with an aukey 15000 battery pack. And got the TurboCharge toast notification when plugged in. Cables aren't loose now.. But they aren't as tight as they were. It's like its had a months use, and it wasn't like that before. Not a huge deal, but i'm sticking to the wireless receivers, and possibly the znaps when they come out as they'll be more case friendly. I'll probably just use these on some other devices. It was cool in theory.

I must have a bad cable then... I never get the turbocharge notification and it goes slow, I always have the light on the front. Did you also purchase from amazon?

UPDATE: I got my replacement cable and it DOES support turbocharging pretty awesome I have to admit!

I've got the tough frame for my MXPE on my phone currently, I love how it looks and feels, don't need anything else for a case. I wonder if this piece that plugs into the usb on the phone is too wide to fit into the hold cutout on the bumper. Can anyone verify if I would have to cut up my bumper if I bought this cable??
