Only switches if connected to dock (power?) - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I tried to search on XDA regarding my problem but got "Sorry, search is down temporarily" or whatever. So, here it is!
One of our kids spilt some drink (water I think? I wasn't here when it happened) on the XOOM. And now it seems it will only switch on if it's on a speaker HD dock that I have. It wasn't connected to anything and in a leather case when the drink incident happened. It shows 100% battery and on charge when on the dock but if I disconnect the power, the XOOM switches off.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should try or look at? I hardly use it anymore but the 2 kids do use it to watch shows/youtube and play the odd kid under 3 friendly game so I'd like to extend it's life more than needing to keep it on the HD speaker dock, I know our 3 yr old will turn it up full bore going "I can't hear it daddy" and giving her cheeky grin hehe.
I'm up to doing anything, I did put my HTC ONE X semi recently in a bag of rice for several days after our 1 year old decided that it would look better being in a bucket of water (I see a pattern emerging! Plus not having the XOOM actually physically connected to a power source while the kids are using it would be a load off my mind *IF* I can somehow see if I can fix this issue of it needing to be on the speaker dock to turn and stay on.

Universal plunges from a 3 story building... will it survive? place your bets now.

I had to jump over some stupid fence today at my work (didn't want to go all the way around), so i asked my friend to hold my universal while i jumped.
maybe i should have held it myself, because the universal slipped from her hands, and fell down the 3 story building, hitting many many stairs on the way down.
from a first glance i thought its the end of my beautiful relationship with my uni.
but actually after opening it up and checking its insides - it looks pretty okay! nothing seems to be broken or loose...
the problem is: is won't even start. so im trying to discover where malfunction is.
i've tried:
Switching batteries
Plugging it in to a power source (computer / wall)
Dismantling body and screen, tightening all of the connectors
Bootloader mode - not showing anything
Connecting with MTTY - but i can't even get it to connect
Turned on, waited for 5 mins and called it to see if it'll ring (to eliminate screen problems) - forwards to voicemail
Nothing worked, the screen is always blank.
when i plug in a power source, a red light flashes REALLY quickly, and then goes off, after that nothing happens.
the only thing that gave me a clue its still alive somewhere inside - when i plugged it to my computer, windows alerted me i plugged in an unknown device, even when i tried to put it in BL and connect again.
Does anyone have a clue what i can do next to find where the problem lies, and bring my love back to life???
please, i need help on this.
Mine fell a few feet from my hand to the (concrete) floor and was the same - no signs of trauma but completely dead, aside from a light when connected to the charger.
I think the damage will be to the mainboard, so it's a either a case of getting a new board and fitting it, or buying another universal and selling the dead one for parts. I opted for the latter.
My Condolences!! as long you can not find some lose cable or what so ever I believe you will not able to bring your "love" back to alive.
After connecting to your Computer RED light and Your computer doesn't recognize the Device indicates major issue.

i don't know anyone who deals with jtag, but maybe it'll be a good idea to look for a private repair lab which works with jtag.
i guess for a small amount of money they could help me find the problematic part.
i wanted to avoid sending it over to a some random repair lab, because they might turn out as just some amatures and tell me that the whole main board needs to be replaced, instead of a specific part...
so i'll start with some searching
anyone else have any more suggestions?
mine fell from my pocket and red led pops up only when connected to the charger.. i sent it to ppctechs.. they put it under the infrared oven and nothing happened, so its not lose solder nor connectors nor nothing.. its the mainboard, its hard for it to be replaced as far as component level goes.. but who knows.. personally i think just sell it for parts.. sorry, thats what i did and boutght a new one off ebay for 400

Nexus one desk dock?

I was just wondering if anyone used the nexus one docking station and liked it? I've read some reviews going both ways.
after reading about burn in I was also wondering if anyone had any similar problems....

if youre afraid of burn in.. all you have to do is touch the power button and it turns the screen and backlight off... besides, the clock app defaults to a screensaver anyway... i've had mine since it came out and its nice to not have to plug it in at night... just drop and charge

I am actually almost considering buying two.. one for my desk so I can set it next to my comp and one for my bed stand lol...
But, being able to turn it off may prove useful if I find the light bright.. seeing as I have trouble sleeping at night with any light in the room.

Actually it wont be the clock light that you find bright. It is really dim and as mentioned above, moves around like a screen saver.
What you will find bright and you cannot turn off with the default OS2.1 is the white illumination for the 4 buttons at the bottom. The buttons stay backlit and some people find them annoying. Apparently with rooted phones there are ways to dim them.
Buy a third one to put in your car. Thats where mine lives.

Probably because it's a non-issue.
That could be true. I suppose it really is up to the buyer... I wouldn't expect your average cell phone user to care as much.. However, people spending 529$ on the phone I suppose I view slightly differently.
With the dock is it possible to still use a case? I was reading one case is suppose to be 1 mm thick.. but, sometimes that is too thick sometimes its managable.. any idea if it would work?
I'm getting paid Monday, I have to pay off a ticket and my phone bill. Hopefully I'll have a little left over so I can splurge and by myself something nice.. Like the dock.
Doesn't it have a 3.5mm output on the back? So you can sync via Bluetooth to the dock and play your music through speakers plugged in? I may by a cheap little 2.1 surround sound system to plug in to it...
Nexus one dock
I got the nexus dock a week ago and love that dam thing. I really didnt need it but it looks cool on my desk. I have it hooked up to my surround sound so I stream music to the dock. I nice add on if your a nexus one owner.

Apparently Seidio also offers a dock...
I am wondering if it would ruin the seidio innocase II taking the phone in and out of the case everyday.. I've read some review saying its impossible to take out.. others it isn't any problem at all.. I would hate to spend 20-30$ and tear up the case taking the n1 in and out for use on the dock.
Just got my dock today, and loving it so far! The music streaming is great, I can leave my phone around my room, and leave the music on
Only thing is if I am using it while its sitting there, it will sometimes pop out, as the lip holding the phone in place isn't that big..
But loving it!
I have the google dock and the Seidio dock. Love the goog dock, hate the Seidio dock. It's difficult to set the phone in or take it out of the Seidio dock. It charges via usb from a computer but does not connect (no file transfer, etc) and is cheaply constructed. I don't use it anymore.

I saw the seidio one.. and judging from the pics i've seen.. the seidio just doesn't look as elegant....
The only reason why I was considering it was because I may be able to charge the n1 with a case on.. so scratch that.

I hate mine. I have to re-seat my N1 on the dock 2-3 times till the pins match up and connect properly (Yes I wait about 5 seconds to make sure, and look at the charging light).
Then when it's connected just fine and goes to the Clock screen, I would get an email that vibrates and it would disconnect from the dock and I have to jiggle it and re-seat it again!
I hate it! The pins look fine and I'm not using any case.

Mine doesn't really sit in their well. I can't really use it in the dock. So pressing the screen for alarm buttons etc keeps disconnecting it so it would go back to the home screen then back to the clock dock. GAHHH
I don't know if it's the dock or the back of the phone but there's nothing I can do about it because I am in the UK.

I have to reseat mine almost every time I dock, but I have a BSE, so I'm ok with it.
And I also occasionally have an annoying buzzing from the wires that I've been unable to get rid of (I'm sure I'll pinpoint it eventually and fix it).
Even with those two things, I think the dock rocks!!

I use my desktop dock every evening and love it.
I've gone back and forth between automatically opening the Clock app and Gentle Alarm to finally (I think) settle on the Clock app. I just trust the screen saver a little more.
As has already been mentioned, the illuminated buttons are annoying (fixed in froyo)
If the option to disable trackball notifications when docked was present, I would be very happy

[Q] Those who have torn their TF's down, where is the connection to the Screen?

To start off I have had my B50 TF for about 4 months now and I have liked it and it does everything I need it to do.. I am now at college and it does a great job as a note taking and entertainment device.
How ever I was never 100% happy with mine as I has 2 dead pixels from the start, some minor light bleed and a few specs of dust under the screen.. I also have a keyboard that has the serious battery drain issue.. However I was so happy about having it that I didnt want to RMA the TF or the dock and have to wait until others came into stock..
Now for the sad story.. about 2 weeks ago I came into my girl friends dorm room and she had a sad puppy type of face on and she was almost in tears.. I finally got out of her that she accidently caught my charging cable hooked up to my TF and Dock and it fell about 2 feet onto a metal lamp and put a few decient sized scratches on the back of the TF.. I told her its fine and It booted up and worked fine so I was not worried about it at all.. and it work perfect after that for about a week.. Then I turned it on about a week later and the screen started flickering with blue lines all over and then I kinda shook it around a little and pressed the on/off button a few times and it was fine.. then today (about a week after the weird screen flicker) I walk into my Anthropology class and grab the TF and dock and I try and turn it on and it wont turn on.. Which is weird because I always plug it in on my night stand every night.. I just assumed my Asus charger got unplugged and after class plugged just the TF in for 8 hours.. Then I pull it off the charger for Comp Sci class and It wont turn on then either.. I will hold the power button down for 15 sec and then let go and all I hear is a little "click" that is the sound of it trying to turn on.. No screen animations, no black light, no sounds other then the click
I am devastated as I have entire class notes on there and also that was my everyday computer that I dumped allot of hard earned cash into. And when I told my girl that it wasnt turning on she felt so bad and was on the brink of a major emotional breakdown.. Its not the end of the world for me, but damn I am going to be devastated if $400 just went down the drain..
Anyone have any words of advice or any last efforts I could try? I guess if all else fails, I will be waiting for the TF2 to come out and hopefully it will still work with my dock..

EDIT: I have HDMI out and have torn the TF apart and cant seam to track down the connection to the Screen form the board to make sure it is not a loose connection.. I am hoping something came loose and the screen is not FUBAR.. I dont thing the screen is dead though.. It was fine for 2 weeks after the drop, i would have thought that it would have been dead right away if the screen was dead..
The lcd cord might be loose in there. Open it up and tighten it.

I was thinking it was the screen ribbon cable but when there is no HDMI out either I was starting to think other wise..

No hdmi out. That's a problem. I'm still convinced something is loose in there. You got nothing to lose. Open it up and try to tighten things up.
It would have been maybe a little funny if she was not in tears when she found out she broke my tablet with a ton of my school stuff on it and my most used piece of technology..
I will try and open it up eventually.. I am at school so I dont have any of my Tech tools.. I am going to have to either buy some or wait a few weeks till I go home..
Edit: My Computer will recognize it when I plug the TF In and unplug it.. Just I cant do anything with it.. I just hear the Windows sounds..

I have HDMI out.. the Digitizer works fine and I can connect it to the dock and the touchpad works as it should and everything else works find and seams fine.. I just cant find the connection to the Screen to see if its the connection of if I broke the screen.. I am going to the tear down thread to ask for help..

[Q] What was your experience with ASUS Support?

I want to know if anybody tried to get a warranty repair on his TF700 with cracked glass.
I can't claim i NEVER dropped my Transformer, it has a small scratch on the side from about 8 months ago. About a month ago I noticed my screen cracked on edge after I woke up and tablet was laying in his case right where i put him. A week or so later I noticed that I can't lock it in the dock, the left hinge just wouldn't fit, however the dock still worked. After about two weeks I was on a yacht, the dock was stored in my cabin all the time, but one day I wanted to charge battery from it I noticed it's dead and not charging. After plugging it to charger in marina the light was not lit and when I connected dock to tablet it didnt recognise it. And then 2 days later I took Transformer out of my backpack at the airport and I saw another crack on the screen. Again it wasn't dropped, hit with a club, tossed, just put gently in the backpack.
The weird thing is I got 3 diffrent problems, all happening within a month and none of it was directly preceeded with any kind of misuse. I wonder if people at ASUS support are going to believe that I didn't abuse my Transformer in any way.
Anybody had simmilar problems and what was the result of RMA procedure?
Where are these cracks? I would assume along the bottom where it would fit in the dock but are they where the connection dongle is, on the side, ever notice it getting unusually hot when charging or smell anything? If I follow correctly then neither the tablet nor dock is charging regardless if they are connected or as individual peices.
I've had the dongle portion on my tablet go bad. I heard a pop after plugging it in, a faint smell of burnt something, and it didn't respond anymore to the usb cable. Connectiong it to the computer also resulted with nothing happening. They repaired it with no problem. Perhaps your port went bad and in the process caused the screen to crack. If the cracks are around the port area of course. How it ties into the dock not working now could also be related. Maybe it was the dock that went bad first but the signs showed on the tablet since it is easier to see.
Either way your tablet is useless if it doesn't charge. All you can do really is send it in for RMA and hope they don't claim it is customer induced damage. Try doing a Google search for the model you have and screen cracks. Might find something there following other people with cracked screens.

Somehow, my wife managed to drop her phone in the toilet yesterday. For whatever reason, she was pulling her phone out of her pocket while facing the toilet and it slipped out of her hand and into the abyss...
She said it wasn't in there long, but it only takes nanoseconds for a submerged phone to die.... I didn't know about this until much later in the evening. She was using her phone next to me and I noticed it had the headset icon in the notification bar and asked her if that was some new app or something. That's when she told me what happened. She said she dried it off as good as she could and didnt notice any issues with the phone..
I took the phone out of the case to find it had been sitting in a shallow pool of water all day. We turned it off and left it in a sealed ziplock bag of rice with the air sucked out, and noticed the phone making a hissing sound as it was being put into the bag. Took it out this morning, and now the phone will not turn on at all, nor will it respond to adb when connected to a PC. The LED does light up when plugged into a USB cable.
I guess all i need to know is ... Is this a lost cause at this point? I'm getting a gently used Motorola Razr 4G from someone on Craiglist so she'll have something to use, but if this one is fixable, I'd be curious to get it working.
The hissing sound came from the lower portion of the phone, so I'm wondering if the water moving when we pulled the phone from the case got in there and fried the battery and whatever else.
Any helpful info appreciated. Or even if it's a lost cause... Just want to be sure before tossing or putting a bullet through this thing.

Hmm not sure. If it won't turn on I guess it'd be a list cause. But I'd suggest always leave a Water phone in rice atleast 2-3 days. I left my m8 in heavy rain for an hour" was playing Bball and forgot about it lol" with the phone facing up and after 2 days haven't had a prob since but submerged is a different ball game. I've personanly dropped a couple phones in toilet and all died just my experience. Btw everytime I have a phone die I always get a droid Razer off Craigslist lol just a great phone for a couple months

I'm guessing no insurance on the device? Call HTC and ask them if they'll help you with their HTC Advantage

It's most likely dead. If a phone gets dropped in water while it's still on, water gets into the boards and shorts things out. IF she would have immediately turned it off and put it in rice, there might have been a chance. But since she used it while there was water inside the phone, who know what could have shorted out.

I wouldn't call it bogus, just lucky.
The phone doesn't have any way of keeping water out, some phones will survive water submersion and some won't. This is the case for any phone model.
