Need help rooting JB 4.1.1 v10.4.2.20, confused by many tutorials and forum posts - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my second day at this, I just need something recent and relevant to follow, most tutorials start with having to install device drivers, which Iv done, and then installing Android SDK and fastboot, which is were the problems start, because even though some guides seem recent, once it gets to the SDK installation part, it redirects to a separate, older tutorial, that looks different from what I'm trying to do. I rooted my tf300t last year and it was was so much easier then this. I can get my tablet to boot with the RCK , Android, USB, Wipe option, but after that I'm lost, some tutorials mention unlocking the bootloader, some don't. I keep telling myself its not worth the headache, but as soon as I use my tablet, and see all the ads, pop ups, and bloated apps, I'm back online trying to figure this out.
Iv checked http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845377 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105949 but don't know if I'm on the right track, some assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If you are running jb then you have to unlock the bootloader first. You can download the apk from the Asus site. Once you do that, you can use the rooting guide in the general section to flash recovery, then flash root. Part 3 of this guide will help you. Its what I used and I've never looked back -

Will that wipe all the data on my tablet? I've been playing with it all day and got quite a few apps and emulators running that I'd rather not lose. Since I'm not rooted yet I can't make a backup using CWM or Titanium Backup first...

It shouldn't no. Every time Asus releases an update, I flash it with twrp. I lose root and recovery, but I simply put it right back on. The data you speak of is unaffected during this process.

Help trying to enter Fastboot/Recovery

Hi all. I'm on a stock WW .40 ROM and have rooted it using the 1-Click method from the Development page.
I accidentally deleted some apps using Titanium, and after reading that some of those apps are required for the upcoming JB 4.1.1 update, I'm trying to restore the ROM back to stock using the image from Asus website.
However, I am not able to get my TF300TG to do so. When at boot up, it prompts whether to enter RCK mode, after which it displays only 2 options, Wipe Data or the Android logo.
I read somewhere that someone mentioned that the 1-Click method might kill the recovery.
Would appreciate if anyone can provide me any leads to getting my tablet back to the complete stock ROM.
Regards.

I am not positive on this, cuz I am looking for a way to go back to stock also, but from what i have read so far, it appears you have to unlock your bootloader to get access to fastboot, then flash the blob file from the asus website. Hopefully someone who knows more will chime in, and tell us if this is correct or not. I am assuming so far, there is no way to go back to stock without an unlocked bootloader.

[Q] Jellybean Factory Data Reset / Root

Looking for input from anyone who has had experience with a Rooted TF300T with a "Locked" Bootloader Running "Official OTA Jellybean".My TF300T is Rooted with the Locked Bootloader and OTA Jellybean, Question is If a Factory Data Reset is Preformed will Root Remain or Be Lost ? I know from Past Experiences with my Acer A100 that after a Factory Data Reset Root is Retained. Any Input will be Greatly Appreciated.

You might get mixed answers, but I can tell you I did exactly that, same circumstances at the time, and I ended up being half-rooted. I could get root access via adb and ota root keeper said it was installed, but it also said I did not have root permissions, and apps could not gain root access no matter what I tried. I consider that a loss of root, so be careful doing that.
As such, I ended up unlocking the bootloader and fully rooting that way.

funnel71 Thank's for the Reply to My Post.It was So Easy to Root My TF300T and Retain Root with the Upgrade to Jellybean that I am a Little Apprehensive about trying the Cold Reboot and Factory Rest in Fear of losing My Root in order to solve a couple of Small Concerns that I am having with certain Apps force closing to the Lock Screen. The UI is Perfect with Jellybean with No Concerns what so ever...Super Fast & Smooth....I think I will just Play it by Ear for Now and let things ride being that there are No other Concerns that this Tablet is experiencing .I was Lucky enough to be able to Purchase my TF300T 16 GB at Best Buy for $249.99 with the Clearance that they had with Overstock of the Blue Model.I have a 30 Day Return on this Bad Boy and sure Hope Not to have to use it.
cold booting won't make you lose root. I did factory reset once on ics and I was able to restore root not sure if it will work on jb. Also try clearing the app's data of the apps that are getting forced closed then cold boot.

The thing is you were able to easily root because of exploits which were closed by jb - specifically the ability to link the data directory to the /system mount. Since a factory reset wipes the data area, it can break that link, and if on jb, you can't get it back, at least not that way. Only current way is to unlock the bootloader, flash in recovery, and use recovery to flash in the needed components for root. It's not a hard procedure at all, but some don't want to out of fear of bricking or the loss of warranty.

jgaf Thanks for the reply to my Post.I have had problems with three Apps so far. (1) Astro File Manager: Solved with an Update. (2) OEM Camera while deleting a Photo Taken,Have Not had a Problem sense then.(Strange) (3) Riptide GP Cleared the Data as suggested and Fine So Far.
I Really Think that my Problems are with the Apps and Not Hardware of the TF300T or Software Related to Jellybean (I Hope). Again Thanks for the Input Greatly Appreciated . As Far as Root is Concerned I think the reason you were able to restore it is because you were on ICS and Not Jellybean with a Locked Bootloader.
After each fw update some apps always get wonky, which are almost always fixed by clearing data or cold booting. Sucks that we can't do factory reset on jb and keep root, it's always good to have that option when nothing else seems to work. Hopefully someone will find a way of rooting without having to unlock.

Rooting Newest Firmware Update?

Hey all, just got my TF700 on Friday. So stoked.
I am about to root my tablet, but I want to make sure the current tools with work (sparkym3 and Debugfs) with the newest update. I would rather root the latest release than root what I have and use Voodoo. I have had issues doing that in the past.
My current firmware is IML74K.US_epad-9-4-5.26-20120720
How many update as I away from current? Will the current tools work with the most recent updates? Which method do you guys recommend?
Thanks!
I have not been able to get those two methods to work for me on the newest update. I think I am a rare exception, most seem to have success. I have even returned a tablet becuase of defect and the second would not root either. It wasnt a big deal because i knew i was going to unlock the bootloader and then i could install a custom recovery and rom and achieve root that way. If you are planning on unlocking I suggest you do a little more research in the NVFlash page because if you update from your current firmware that will no longer be an option. Just my 2 cents
(Imo) i would just root what you have now and use voodoo. Checkout the nvflash thread while your at it. ( doesn't work with .30 update, i wish i had noticed that before i upgraded to .30 )
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
I know it was mentioned but just for good measure... If you plan on unlocking at all make sure you do it before upgrading to .30 so that you can get nvflash setup for your device.
Sent from my Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Is .30 the next update? How many update am I away from current?
I have some thinking to do, I wasn't planning on unlocking (at least until CM and AOKP officially support the TF700) but if NvFlash won't work on any other updates I may need to rethink.
And to be honest, I don't really see the purpose in unlocking. I ROMed my TF101 but ASUS does such a good job of only altering AOSP with small (and beneficial) changes I may just leave my Infinity as is. Especially if I have to stick with the shipped firmware and once I update NvFlash won't work. I guess I can always just flash ROMs without NvFlash though...
But my two questions above still stand.
One more question as this is the first device I have owned that had NvFlash available. What is the benefit of having NvFlash vs just CWM? Just protection in case I do something really stupid?
Sent from my EPAD using Tapatalk 2
You are one update away from the latest which is .30. (soon to be two) The debugfs root method will root you.
you should check out my thread on root and jellybean: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908304
Nvflash allows you to flash anything even if the bootloader is corrupted or prevents it, it also allows you to downgrade when the bootloader prevents it e.g. .30 to .26. it is also required to flash custom bootloaders which is useful if someone develops a dual-boot bootloader. You can even relock and reunlock your bootloader with nvflash. If you don't plan on using non-stock fw though, stay locked so that you can get your updates and support.
Thanks for the help guys.
So what I'm thinking is just to root, unlock, and NOT flash NvFlash. It isn't terribly dangerous not to use right? I mean as long as I have CWM installed I am pretty safe unless I do something completely stupid right?

If you have .26 and are going to unlock, you may as well create your nvflash files. It isn't so much as flashing nvflash. Nvflash is already hardcoded in the tegra chip. You would just be creating the encrypted files needed to utilize it on your device. You save these in triplicate in case the worst happens. Unlocking is necessary for generating the nvflash files, but it voids your warranty and leaves you unable to recieve OTAs (you can still update manually using methods listed in the development forums).
I'm not explicitly recommending that you unlock, but if you do, it's best to do it on the .26 update, so you can get those nvflash files from your device.
So if I do install NvFlash can I still waiting install official updates from Asus by downloading them from Asus website?
I really want to try Asus's stock Jelly Bean ROM, so anything that removes that as an option is not for me.
Thanks for the clarification.
Sent from my DROID SPYDER using Tapatalk 2
you don't install nvflash. you use it to interface with the device's apx mode.
as for the official firmwares, you can still install those even if you are unlocked. you just have to do it manually.
Yup, you can just download the firmware zip from asus's website:
http://www.asus.com/Tablet/Transformer_Pad/ASUS_Transformer_Pad_Infinity_TF700T/#download
Unzip it once(it'l be another zip) and flash that in TWRP. (not sure if it works in cwm. I am biased but I definately recommend twrp:angel Make sure you uncheck flash recovery. reinstall recovery using fastboot because the update deletes it.

No, you need to unlock to take a bootloader backup, which you will not able to take OTA Jelly Been, however, you can download the new Jelly Bean from Asus website and manually flash it.
OK I feel like I understand now. There really aren't any downsides to setting up NvFlash (Asus warranty not an issue, I have Best Buy's super program where I can return the tablet even if I just scratch the screen if I want to).
My initial impression was that if I unlocked I would not be able to update any stock firmware period, and that if I set up NvFlash I could not move from .26.
If I understand correctly I just have to be on .26 to set up NvFlash, and can manually install official Asus firmware after unlocking.
Thanks for the help all! I am not new to flashing ROMs etc. but have never had the ability to use NvFlash.
Have a great night all!

Clarification on Manual JB Installation

Hey all, you guys have helped me understand things so many times in the past I figured I would pose this question. I just picked up my TF700 a few days ago, coming from the TF101.
So I have this bad boy rooted already and am about to unlock, I just want to make sure I understand everything perfectly before I void my warranty. I am looking to install TWRP but I see that it does not work with the JB update, would I be able to flash JB with it and then wait for a new version to come out?
So my process would be:
- Unlock
- Set up NvFlash
- Install TWRP
- Flash JB manually
- Chill on stock JB and wait for new TWRP version to come out.
Does anyone see an issue with this? My confusion stems from the massive amount of confusion others seem to have, and the fact that TWRP does not work with JB. Just want to make sure it makes sense to upgrade prior to a new version coming out.
Yes, I see that there is a new unofficial CWM version that is compatible with JB; however it is not a touch version and backing up does not work. I like TWRP much more and don't really see the point in using CWM if a new TWRP version will be coming out soon.
Thanks in advance all, you have no idea how many headaches you guys have prevented and cured.

Right on, seems like you have everything covered!
Don't forget to root while on ICS and save root with OTA Rootkeeper before upgrading to Jelly Bean. Then, after on Jelly Bean, re-install OTA rootkeeper and restore root.
I think there is a way to root even while on Jelly Bean now as well...

Forgive my noobish question but your answer will help me out too,
I have just got my Asus a couple of days ago so, i have rooted my device, i don't understand how to do NvFlash that's why i keep my bootloader locked, no Jelly Bean support from TWRP yet another reason for not unlocking my bootloader.
So if there is no support for TWRP in Jelly Bean why do you flash it in the first place? Because i have read in your post that after you set up NvFlash (God knows how you do it, to my newbie eyes seems impossible) you install TWRP. Is there a spesific reason for doing it? What does it help you with?
Thank you in advance,
I looked at the NvFlash instructions and I am a bit confused as well. I am going to have a developer buddy from DroidRzr.com help me through it tonight, and once I get it installed I will help walk you through it.
As far as TWRP support goes, there will be a new release soon. They knew JB was going to break their current build (even putting a warning in the thread) but needed the source code for JB to fix it. The source code just came out yesterday (maybe the day before) so a new version will be coming soon. But you can always just use CWM if you want, I just like TWRP way more.
And you need to have either TWRP or CWM installed to flash JB, from your question it sounded like you are not aware of that.
Cheers!

Thank you for your reply mate, i am waiting for NvFlash walkthrough with anxiety. I hope you won't forget to post the guide in this thread when the right time comes, for all of us who have doubts about the NvFlash installation.:good:
As for the other matter i didn't know that TWRP or CWRM recovery is needed in order to manually update to the next firmware update.
Does what you said apply to any firmware installation, in order to manually update the Asus? (Since OTA doesn't work with bootloader unlocked).
And i am asking you that because i have read in a thread about this way of updating your firmware without the use of custom recovery, here it comes...
Alternative Firmware update Method
1. Decompress downloaded .zip file (it will be another .zip)
2. Rename it to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip
3. Format FAT32 the MicroSD card that you will be using for the update process
4. Copy the file to (the root directory of) your MicroSD
5. Insert it into the tablet
6. Shutdown (power off) the tablet
7. Power it on by pressing and holding VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons simultaneously
8. When you see white text in the top left corner of the screen, release the buttons ^^ and press VOLUME UP button until you see Android logo and process bar
9. Wait patiently for 10 minutes or so
10. Enjoy!
Could you please tell me how to do an update with the use of TWRP or CWRM or tell me where you have read it because i am interested in
learning a new method of updating my tablet and also what is the benefit of using custom recovery in order to update firmware?
Thank you in advance and i am waiting for Nvflash guide, much obliged for your help
Of course . A lot of times when people write guides they forget that sometimes saying things like "execute this" can be confusing for some; execute in a command prompt or in a terminal emulator on the device?
Those instructions were for updating to JB via a workaround using the OTA update package before Asus released the official JB firmware. Now that we have the actual firmware (downloadable from the Asus support site) those instructions are uneccesary.
Now all you have to do is boot into CWM or TWRP then flash the update just as any other ROM:
- Wipe Data / Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Format /system
- Install From SD Card (flash JB)
Someone please correct me if I have made a egregious mistake here .
Nevermind

[Q] That slow or defective???

I love my tf700t but I am also tired of how slow it is. My wife has a Samsung 10.1 note and from off to power up it takes her about 30 sec to get to the desktop and it takes me about 2 minutes. My screen is better than hers of course but loading apps and switching apps is slow and I get apps freezing and the popup asking if I want to wait or kill it.
Wifi is there but not as good as hers. We recently went on vacation and I installed copilot nav software 1.3g on both tablets. Hers was done in about 30 minutes and mine took about 4 hours.
Very frustrating. I have an extended warranty on it and I can either take it back to see if they can do something with it or I can ditch the warranty and flash it and hope that will improve the situation.
I know that most people here say that flashing really makes a big difference but does it seem that mine is a bit too slow to be normal???
Thanks
Paul
ps. I have done a factory reset and cleaned it off. I have about 90 apps installed but not all running of course

Out of the box, Samsung is smoother and faster than the tf700... The internet on the tf700 is very slow with the stock firmware. It was the reason why I was here in the first place...
Well I guess that answers that question. My Asus warranty has expired but the wife bought an extended one. Will have to check and make sure they don't care about unlocking and rooting. Then maybe I can end my frustration.

You are unlocked? Dude - just run CROMI-X on the tablet and you're gonna love it! The TF700 with CROMI-X is probably the best device I ever owned!
It sucks on stock, yes. But with that custom rom this tablet soars!!
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk 2
I am not unlocked yet. I don't like the idea of having to use Asus unlock tool and letting them know that I have unlocked the tablet. Just a phobia about nosy companies.
If it doesn't scrweup my extended warranty I will bite the bullet and do it
I was in the same boat (2min + boot, slow and lagging) until I finally got fed up enough to unlock and now can enjoy the tablet again. I've been rooted from the beginning but its been no help fixing the problem. Now it's faster than its ever been and I have both CROMi-X and Cyanogenmod installed for a little variety. I hadn't flashed anything since my OG Droid days but with a little research on XDA and a little trial and error, it was quickly unlocked and running smooth. Best decision I could of made.

So I guess it's unlock, root, TWRP and then rom of my choice. You say you have CROMi-X and Cyanogenmod. I didn't know you could have two roms installed at the same time???
Just my opinion here but when you unlock and flash custom Roms will make the device faster compared to stock but compared to the note it will still be slower probably...
As long as you don't compare it side by side the TF700 is okay though.

After reading a bit and being a bit confused I thought I might list what I think I need and see if I am right.
First I am on 10.6.1.14.10 so that seems to limit me on some items, sigh.
First - unlocking using the Asus unlock tool. Is there any other way to unlock??
Second - Root using debugfs. Can this be done with goomanager or am I ahead of myself?
Third - NVFlash tool
Fourth - TWRP with goomanager
Fifth - Rom of my choice
Right or any mistakes??
Thanks

Sorry, but you got some more reading to do.
On the 10.6.1.14.10 firmware you cannot root - at least not with Motochopper. You can downgrade to .8 and use Motochopper or - easier and better - just unlock and use Scott's recovery tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1938129 to flash TWRP 2.6.1 and a then a custom rom through TWRP.
First: No
Second: See above. You cannot use GooManager to root
Third: NVFlash just became available for TF700 on Jellybean! Leave it for later - it's not necessary to flash a custom rom but if you have your NVFlash blobs, your tablet is unbrickabable! https://www.androidroot.mobi/pages/guides/tegra3-guide-nvflash-jellybean/
Follow this thread and read up on anything you don't understand. This is not for the faint of heart! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2455925
Fourth: You need root to use GOOManager to install TWRP, use Scott's tool instead
Fifth: exactly

Yikes see what I mean. Do this but if you have this version don't do this or you will brick. Glad I asked
So unlock with Asus tool then scott's recovery tool to root. I though at that point you had to use NVFlash before you flashed to a new rom to make sure you had the blobs to have insurance for bricking? I don't mind taking the extra step before flashing a new rom to make sure I don't screw the pooch.
Thanks very much for the info. Back to reading.
Damn I have flashed nearly all the phones I had and never had this much trouble.

I would think that you should obtain the NVflash blobs before flashing anything else to ensure that you can go back if you somehow screw up your bootloader... You can fix most things as long as your bootloader is still intacted.. It is just my two cents..

Agrred. That's the best and most logical way to proceed.
But not the easiest....
Tell ya, I have been flashing this baby for a while now, but the NVFlash procedure gives me sweaty palms
