Help trying to enter Fastboot/Recovery - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I'm on a stock WW .40 ROM and have rooted it using the 1-Click method from the Development page.
I accidentally deleted some apps using Titanium, and after reading that some of those apps are required for the upcoming JB 4.1.1 update, I'm trying to restore the ROM back to stock using the image from Asus website.
However, I am not able to get my TF300TG to do so. When at boot up, it prompts whether to enter RCK mode, after which it displays only 2 options, Wipe Data or the Android logo.
I read somewhere that someone mentioned that the 1-Click method might kill the recovery.
Would appreciate if anyone can provide me any leads to getting my tablet back to the complete stock ROM.
Regards.

I am not positive on this, cuz I am looking for a way to go back to stock also, but from what i have read so far, it appears you have to unlock your bootloader to get access to fastboot, then flash the blob file from the asus website. Hopefully someone who knows more will chime in, and tell us if this is correct or not. I am assuming so far, there is no way to go back to stock without an unlocked bootloader.

Clarification on Manual JB Installation

Hey all, you guys have helped me understand things so many times in the past I figured I would pose this question. I just picked up my TF700 a few days ago, coming from the TF101.
So I have this bad boy rooted already and am about to unlock, I just want to make sure I understand everything perfectly before I void my warranty. I am looking to install TWRP but I see that it does not work with the JB update, would I be able to flash JB with it and then wait for a new version to come out?
So my process would be:
- Unlock
- Set up NvFlash
- Install TWRP
- Flash JB manually
- Chill on stock JB and wait for new TWRP version to come out.
Does anyone see an issue with this? My confusion stems from the massive amount of confusion others seem to have, and the fact that TWRP does not work with JB. Just want to make sure it makes sense to upgrade prior to a new version coming out.
Yes, I see that there is a new unofficial CWM version that is compatible with JB; however it is not a touch version and backing up does not work. I like TWRP much more and don't really see the point in using CWM if a new TWRP version will be coming out soon.
Thanks in advance all, you have no idea how many headaches you guys have prevented and cured.

Right on, seems like you have everything covered!
Don't forget to root while on ICS and save root with OTA Rootkeeper before upgrading to Jelly Bean. Then, after on Jelly Bean, re-install OTA rootkeeper and restore root.
I think there is a way to root even while on Jelly Bean now as well...

Yeah, this step is no longer needed for unlocked devices,he can flash the stock JB rom from Asus site and then follow this for rooting.
BTW @jtrosky,your device is 64GB or 32GB?I'm asking because you said once that you never had issues restoring a nandroid backup while i always had (64GB here).

Forgive my noobish question but your answer will help me out too,
I have just got my Asus a couple of days ago so, i have rooted my device, i don't understand how to do NvFlash that's why i keep my bootloader locked, no Jelly Bean support from TWRP yet another reason for not unlocking my bootloader.
So if there is no support for TWRP in Jelly Bean why do you flash it in the first place? Because i have read in your post that after you set up NvFlash (God knows how you do it, to my newbie eyes seems impossible) you install TWRP. Is there a spesific reason for doing it? What does it help you with?
Thank you in advance,
I looked at the NvFlash instructions and I am a bit confused as well. I am going to have a developer buddy from DroidRzr.com help me through it tonight, and once I get it installed I will help walk you through it.
As far as TWRP support goes, there will be a new release soon. They knew JB was going to break their current build (even putting a warning in the thread) but needed the source code for JB to fix it. The source code just came out yesterday (maybe the day before) so a new version will be coming soon. But you can always just use CWM if you want, I just like TWRP way more.
And you need to have either TWRP or CWM installed to flash JB, from your question it sounded like you are not aware of that.
Cheers!

Actually a new version of TWRP was just released, so that kind of renders most of this thread moot. Yay!

Thank you for your reply mate, i am waiting for NvFlash walkthrough with anxiety. I hope you won't forget to post the guide in this thread when the right time comes, for all of us who have doubts about the NvFlash installation.:good:
As for the other matter i didn't know that TWRP or CWRM recovery is needed in order to manually update to the next firmware update.
Does what you said apply to any firmware installation, in order to manually update the Asus? (Since OTA doesn't work with bootloader unlocked).
And i am asking you that because i have read in a thread about this way of updating your firmware without the use of custom recovery, here it comes...
Alternative Firmware update Method
1. Decompress downloaded .zip file (it will be another .zip)
2. Rename it to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip
3. Format FAT32 the MicroSD card that you will be using for the update process
4. Copy the file to (the root directory of) your MicroSD
5. Insert it into the tablet
6. Shutdown (power off) the tablet
7. Power it on by pressing and holding VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons simultaneously
8. When you see white text in the top left corner of the screen, release the buttons ^^ and press VOLUME UP button until you see Android logo and process bar
9. Wait patiently for 10 minutes or so
10. Enjoy!
Could you please tell me how to do an update with the use of TWRP or CWRM or tell me where you have read it because i am interested in
learning a new method of updating my tablet and also what is the benefit of using custom recovery in order to update firmware?
Thank you in advance and i am waiting for Nvflash guide, much obliged for your help
Of course . A lot of times when people write guides they forget that sometimes saying things like "execute this" can be confusing for some; execute in a command prompt or in a terminal emulator on the device?
Those instructions were for updating to JB via a workaround using the OTA update package before Asus released the official JB firmware. Now that we have the actual firmware (downloadable from the Asus support site) those instructions are uneccesary.
Now all you have to do is boot into CWM or TWRP then flash the update just as any other ROM:
- Wipe Data / Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Format /system
- Install From SD Card (flash JB)
Someone please correct me if I have made a egregious mistake here .
Nevermind

Need help rooting JB 4.1.1 v10.4.2.20, confused by many tutorials and forum posts

This is my second day at this, I just need something recent and relevant to follow, most tutorials start with having to install device drivers, which Iv done, and then installing Android SDK and fastboot, which is were the problems start, because even though some guides seem recent, once it gets to the SDK installation part, it redirects to a separate, older tutorial, that looks different from what I'm trying to do. I rooted my tf300t last year and it was was so much easier then this. I can get my tablet to boot with the RCK , Android, USB, Wipe option, but after that I'm lost, some tutorials mention unlocking the bootloader, some don't. I keep telling myself its not worth the headache, but as soon as I use my tablet, and see all the ads, pop ups, and bloated apps, I'm back online trying to figure this out.
Iv checked http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845377 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105949 but don't know if I'm on the right track, some assistance would be greatly appreciated.
If you are running jb then you have to unlock the bootloader first. You can download the apk from the Asus site. Once you do that, you can use the rooting guide in the general section to flash recovery, then flash root. Part 3 of this guide will help you. Its what I used and I've never looked back -

It shouldn't no. Every time Asus releases an update, I flash it with twrp. I lose root and recovery, but I simply put it right back on. The data you speak of is unaffected during this process.

[Q] Can't install a ROM

I have a brand TF300T. It is unlocked. I have TWRP installed. I am running stock rom. For some reason I can only get CleanROM to install. I have tried others, but none of them will work for me. After I flash a new rom. The device turns on, but doesn't get past the boot screen. "The Device is UnLocked." ASUS. I have done this process many times on my galaxy sIII many times. What could I be doing wrong?

If you have updated to JB 4.2.1 and CROMI 4.0 then there is only one other ROM compatible with that bootloader right now.
You will need to downgrade to the previous bootloader but be careful and sure you want to do this.
I have attached a screenshot of what i am running. I was wanting to put cyanogenmod on here. What steps do i have to take to accomplish this?

You would need to downgrade the bootloader to 4.1.1. CyanogenMod is not compatible on the latest boot loader.
Be careful - read the how to threads in General first.
It is my understanding that i have to download US_epaduser_10_4_2_20 from the website. then go into fastboot to flash that particular system blob? at least that's what i read in the how-to
ok so that didn't work
OK I got it working!

Returning to stock

I have been looking for dinner documentation on how to return the tablet back to the stock rom and bootloader.
Most of what I have found is for the older 4.0.x firmware.
Does anyone have a guide or easy method to return everything back to stock?
I know that the bootloader knock is already registered with Asus but would still like to return the tablet back to its factory configuration.
Thanks!

9.4.5.30 is as far back as you can go. There's an uncrossable divide at this bootloader (SBK signing).

I don't think I need to go back that far, I was hoping to just get to the 4.1.x version and then make it so the tablet can receive OTA's from there on out.
Any documentation on how to easily accomplish that?
Thanks!

[Edit]
This post has been corrected as I was mistaken about reverting the bootloader.
Oh yah, plenty of documentation to be found. Lets start with exactly where you are now. I know your unlocked and I believe that means no OTA as well. It also means you can't become locked again and you voided your warranty.
Unlocking your bootloader is a misnomer past 9.4.5.26 because it really only unlocks your ROM and recovery. The bootloader remains locked with a secure boot key (SBK). The only savior is a wheelie tool called NVFlash that must have been installed at or before 9.4.5.26. Only then does your bootloader remain truly unlocked.
What is your recovery and ROM and what Android version are you on? The stock Asus latest firmware for 4.1.1 you will need is 10.4.4.25, the same one I'm on. You can get it either from the XDA repository or from Asus firmware download if they still have it available. How you flash it is TBD. But before you do anything we need to evaluate your exact configuration and then determine the best plan of action.
Please outline your specific configuration and I'll get the guy that knows for sure. You should be able to get back on a stock firmware, but you will remain unlocked. Finally you would unroot.
@Tylorw1 will (hopefully) be helping you next. I just PM'd him to this thread.

Everything will depend on your current configuration. Are you on TWRP 2.5 and on the 4.2.1 boot loader? If so you can flash the stock 4.2.1 ROM on ASUS site. It will replace the ROM and recovery so there is no custom modification on it, only just being unlocking. In order to find the ASUS firmware, instead of going under your device soon as your on ASUS, go to support, look up drivers and downloads, type your device in, and select support/downloads while under your device, then select android and the zips are there. Just make sure you are on the correct boot loader and recovery.
Please someone, if I am wrong, please let me know. I would give it a day before going through with this to see what people think because I personally only read about being able to revert.

As far as bootloaders go, I believe you can only go forward not back when you are past 9.4.5.30 if I'm not mistaken (SBK). So for example if you are on 4.2.1 now and wanted to go back to 4.1.1 stock ROM, the 4.2.1 bootloader would still remain even after flashing the 4.1.1 ROM but I need to confirm. Please outline your specific configuration and I'll get the guy that knows for sure. You should be able to get back on a stock ROM and recovery, but you will remain unlocked and on whatever bootloader you are on right now. Finally you would unroot. That's as close as you're going to get back to stock.

When flashing any stock ROM it will flash its own recovery and boot loader. So it will be 100% stock after flashing a stock ROM. And you are correct you cannot go under the .30 anymore as ASUS puts signature verification into the ROMs now and it wont flash anything without it.

With TWRP 2.5 and the 4.2.1 boot loader, it is still possible to revert, just flash the zip. As long as the recovery and boot loader give eachother the correct commands, you can revert back down. So I would just try downloading the 10.4.4.25 4.1.1 ROM from ASUS website. Like I said before as long as the recovery and boot loader are compatible.

Did you download updated firmware, unzip it, rename the zip in the zip appropriately as outlined in guides, put it in the root directory of your external sdcard formatted for FAT32, all before you entered recovery?

yep did all of the above. since my device is unlocked I cant do the ota update. and everytime I run the update from the SD card it shows the red exclamation mark. I reset my tablet but that didn't help. I cant update to anything newer. no matter how I do it (when the tablet shows that there is an update or when I do It with the power button and the volume down)

Tell me all about your system. You said you are unlocked. Lets gather some info for the next guy to help you. Do you have a custom ROM or recovery? Have you ever? Are you rooted? Have you ever upgraded after unlocking this way?
As a fallback, you can try to copy the update.zip file to the root directory of your INTERNAL sdcard and repeat the stock recovery process and see if that works. If not you will have to wait for someone else to help you. I have no experience with unlock, just root. I think you can flash with Goo but I am not at all sure. Wait for some who knows for sure. There is no margin for error when flashing!

My 2 cents worth: Did you uninstall or freeze any system or Asus apps or anything that came with the tablet? If you did you'll have to restore them or the stock update will fail.
Another question: If you're unlocked, why by all means are you on stock????

I agree with you there. I was thinking if he cannot get the stock recovery to work correctly, depending on the boot loader he is on, he could install a custom recovery and flash the stock kernel from there, but until there is more specifics given on his tablet's state a definite way cannot really be given.

well i have to admit that i didnt think that rooting would be that complex/complicated and from my old days with the iphone unlocking always seemed like a good idea. (i know better know.)
i will probably end up rooting it.
the update doesnt work in general....i reset my tablet back to (i think it was ) 4.1.1 and download the 2 versions afterwards but both dont work. the first update i made was OTA before i unlocked. afterwards no update possible.
i have to look up my bootloader later and will post the information.

Iphone unlocking is not android boot loader unlocking. Unlocking an iphone is to make it so you can use it on multiple carriers. Jailbreaking the iphone gives root rights to the user, though the hardware is not very detailed and is not as controllable as on android. Rooting gives root rights and is mostly for backup purposes. Unlocking your boot loader on android(talking TF700 here because they just give you access to your recovery partition, not the whole boot loader) gives you access to write whatever you want to your recovery partition. Kinda like your motherboard bios, for nothing can be done if they become corrupted.
You said you downloaded the zip file, unzipped it once, stuck it on a MicroSD card, and stuck in your tablet and the update popped up and clicked it and it still failed?

Iphone unlocking is not android boot loader unlocking. Unlocking an iphone is to make it so you can use it on multiple carriers. Jailbreaking the iphone gives root rights to the user, though the hardware is not very detailed and is not as controllable as on android. Rooting gives root rights and is mostly for backup purposes. Unlocking your boot loader on android(talking TF700 here because they just give you access to your recovery partition, not the whole boot loader) gives you access to write whatever you want to your recovery partition. Kinda like your motherboard bios, for nothing can be done if they become corrupted.

ahhh i understand...thank you.
and yes. unzipped it...put it on sd card....then in the lower right corner where the time is and where it tells me that is downloading files it told me that an update is found and ready to be installed and if i want to install it. i clicked yes....it shut down and started up with the droid all happy....and then it fell over with the red exclamation mark.
i guess i will just root it...and hope that i wont brick it.

Rooting wont fix the problem. May I ask, since you mentioned something about is in the op, did you use the unlock tool from ASUS? Meaning when the tablet boots is says "This Device is unlocked" in the upper left hand corner?

Ok then you need to root, then download GooManager. Using Goomanager, install TWRP, which is a custom recovery. Boot into recovery and flash the stock ROM from there. Then it will wipe out TWRP and you will be 100% stock again with new boot loader and recovery.

Ok. so.....magic!
i got it to work. the trick was to copy the file to the internal memory. (i did that before i wiped my system and it didnt work then and now i just tried it again out of desperation and it worked). i was suprised since i expected the red exclamation mark again. so i m officially on 4.2.1
thank you very much.

Awesome! Glad I could help. Please thank my meter (click the thanks button). Its always a good thing to know more than one way to do something. _that 's a trick not well published.
[Edit] If it worked on your internal memory after the wipe but still didn't on your external memory, then something is wrong with the external sdcard. Its either not FAT32 or its corrupt and you should consider reformatting it with GNU GParted (live). On Windows, you'll need to download the iso image and burn that to a CD or DVD, which makes it bootable. Then all you may possibly have to do is reorder your boot devices in your BIOS so the CD/DVD comes before the HDD so if you have a bootable disk in the player at boot it will boot from CD/DVD. Stick it in there and try to boot off it first. Some (most?) newer PCs should already have this BIOS boot order as stock. If not, change it.
Alternately, a better or more convenient option if your PC supports it would be do basically the same thing as above except flash the iso to a flash thumb drive and boot from that. Your choice. I use a free Windows program called Astroburn Lite which can burn or flash iso's to either media. Does files too.
