Hey all, you guys have helped me understand things so many times in the past I figured I would pose this question. I just picked up my TF700 a few days ago, coming from the TF101.
So I have this bad boy rooted already and am about to unlock, I just want to make sure I understand everything perfectly before I void my warranty. I am looking to install TWRP but I see that it does not work with the JB update, would I be able to flash JB with it and then wait for a new version to come out?
So my process would be:
- Unlock
- Set up NvFlash
- Install TWRP
- Flash JB manually
- Chill on stock JB and wait for new TWRP version to come out.
Does anyone see an issue with this? My confusion stems from the massive amount of confusion others seem to have, and the fact that TWRP does not work with JB. Just want to make sure it makes sense to upgrade prior to a new version coming out.
Yes, I see that there is a new unofficial CWM version that is compatible with JB; however it is not a touch version and backing up does not work. I like TWRP much more and don't really see the point in using CWM if a new TWRP version will be coming out soon.

Right on, seems like you have everything covered!
Don't forget to root while on ICS and save root with OTA Rootkeeper before upgrading to Jelly Bean. Then, after on Jelly Bean, re-install OTA rootkeeper and restore root.
I think there is a way to root even while on Jelly Bean now as well...

Yeah,this step is no longer needed for unlocked devices,he can flash the stock JB rom from Asus site and then follow this for rooting.
BTW @jtrosky,your device is 64GB or 32GB?I'm asking because you said once that you never had issues restoring a nandroid backup while i always had (64GB here).

Forgive my noobish question but your answer will help me out too,
I have just got my Asus a couple of days ago so, i have rooted my device, i don't understand how to do NvFlash that's why i keep my bootloader locked, no Jelly Bean support from TWRP yet another reason for not unlocking my bootloader.
So if there is no support for TWRP in Jelly Bean why do you flash it in the first place? Because i have read in your post that after you set up NvFlash (God knows how you do it, to my newbie eyes seems impossible) you install TWRP. Is there a spesific reason for doing it? What does it help you with?

I looked at the NvFlash instructions and I am a bit confused as well. I am going to have a developer buddy from DroidRzr.com help me through it tonight, and once I get it installed I will help walk you through it.
As far as TWRP support goes, there will be a new release soon. They knew JB was going to break their current build (even putting a warning in the thread) but needed the source code for JB to fix it. The source code just came out yesterday (maybe the day before) so a new version will be coming soon. But you can always just use CWM if you want, I just like TWRP way more.
And you need to have either TWRP or CWM installed to flash JB, from your question it sounded like you are not aware of that.

Thank you for your reply mate, i am waiting for NvFlash walkthrough with anxiety. I hope you won't forget to post the guide in this thread when the right time comes, for all of us who have doubts about the NvFlash installation.:good:
As for the other matter i didn't know that TWRP or CWRM recovery is needed in order to manually update to the next firmware update.
Does what you said apply to any firmware installation, in order to manually update the Asus? (Since OTA doesn't work with bootloader unlocked).
And i am asking you that because i have read in a thread about this way of updating your firmware without the use of custom recovery, here it comes...
Alternative Firmware update Method
1. Decompress downloaded .zip file (it will be another .zip)
2. Rename it to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip
3. Format FAT32 the MicroSD card that you will be using for the update process
4. Copy the file to (the root directory of) your MicroSD
5. Insert it into the tablet
6. Shutdown (power off) the tablet
7. Power it on by pressing and holding VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons simultaneously
8. When you see white text in the top left corner of the screen, release the buttons ^^ and press VOLUME UP button until you see Android logo and process bar
9. Wait patiently for 10 minutes or so
10. Enjoy!

Those instructions were for updating to JB via a workaround using the OTA update package before Asus released the official JB firmware. Now that we have the actual firmware (downloadable from the Asus support site) those instructions are uneccesary.
Now all you have to do is boot into CWM or TWRP then flash the update just as any other ROM:
- Wipe Data / Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Format /system
- Install From SD Card (flash JB)
Someone please correct me if I have made a egregious mistake here .

For me I didn't do any wipes or formats at all and it worked fine. Kept all my data which was a massive bonus.

so when i got my asus tf300 i thought it would be a great idea to unlock then root my device but after unlocking it using asus unlock-er i eventually gave up on rooting due to my lack of understanding anything past the GUI of Android. now that jelly bean is out i regret nothing more than unlocking it and denying myself access to the JB update. I'm assuming i need to manually update my tablet to JB. i have the download off the asus site but that does not help if i have no clue what to do with it. so the question is how do i go through with the JB update in my situation.

I Have the same issue. I want to relock my TF300T so I can get the Jelly Bean update. Some one here will know how to do it I am sure.
There is no way to relock.
If you want JB, just dl the file from Asus. Unpack it one time. Now you have a zip with a blob and a Meta-Inf Folder.
Put that zip on internal space and flash it through recovery. that´s it. No you are on fully stock with stock recovery and without root.

thank you very much mikaole. that's exactly what i was looking for...i had that zip you were speaking of but i had no clue how to use it. though may i ask for a quick step by step on flashing it through recovery or at least a link on how to do so
OK well I feel dumber than ever...problem all solved...and for anyone that comes to read this follow the previous instructions above and once that file is on your device your device will auto detect the new available firmware and give u a pop up asking if you would like to install it. Hit yes and your done

Hey all, just got my TF700 on Friday. So stoked.
I am about to root my tablet, but I want to make sure the current tools with work (sparkym3 and Debugfs) with the newest update. I would rather root the latest release than root what I have and use Voodoo. I have had issues doing that in the past.
My current firmware is IML74K.US_epad-9-4-5.26-20120720
How many update as I away from current? Will the current tools work with the most recent updates? Which method do you guys recommend?

I have not been able to get those two methods to work for me on the newest update. I think I am a rare exception, most seem to have success. I have even returned a tablet becuase of defect and the second would not root either. It wasnt a big deal because i knew i was going to unlock the bootloader and then i could install a custom recovery and rom and achieve root that way. If you are planning on unlocking I suggest you do a little more research in the NVFlash page because if you update from your current firmware that will no longer be an option. Just my 2 cents
(Imo) i would just root what you have now and use voodoo. Checkout the nvflash thread while your at it. ( doesn't work with .30 update, i wish i had noticed that before i upgraded to .30 )

I know it was mentioned but just for good measure... If you plan on unlocking at all make sure you do it before upgrading to .30 so that you can get nvflash setup for your device.

Is .30 the next update? How many update am I away from current?
I have some thinking to do, I wasn't planning on unlocking (at least until CM and AOKP officially support the TF700) but if NvFlash won't work on any other updates I may need to rethink.
And to be honest, I don't really see the purpose in unlocking. I ROMed my TF101 but ASUS does such a good job of only altering AOSP with small (and beneficial) changes I may just leave my Infinity as is. Especially if I have to stick with the shipped firmware and once I update NvFlash won't work. I guess I can always just flash ROMs without NvFlash though...
But my two questions above still stand.
One more question as this is the first device I have owned that had NvFlash available. What is the benefit of having NvFlash vs just CWM? Just protection in case I do something really stupid?

You are one update away from the latest which is .30. (soon to be two) The debugfs root method will root you.

Nvflash allows you to flash anything even if the bootloader is corrupted or prevents it, it also allows you to downgrade when the bootloader prevents it e.g. .30 to .26. it is also required to flash custom bootloaders which is useful if someone develops a dual-boot bootloader. You can even relock and reunlock your bootloader with nvflash. If you don't plan on using non-stock fw though, stay locked so that you can get your updates and support.

If you have .26 and are going to unlock, you may as well create your nvflash files. It isn't so much as flashing nvflash. Nvflash is already hardcoded in the tegra chip. You would just be creating the encrypted files needed to utilize it on your device. You save these in triplicate in case the worst happens. Unlocking is necessary for generating the nvflash files, but it voids your warranty and leaves you unable to recieve OTAs (you can still update manually using methods listed in the development forums).
I'm not explicitly recommending that you unlock, but if you do, it's best to do it on the .26 update, so you can get those nvflash files from your device.
So if I do install NvFlash can I still waiting install official updates from Asus by downloading them from Asus website?
I really want to try Asus's stock Jelly Bean ROM, so anything that removes that as an option is not for me.

you don't install nvflash. you use it to interface with the device's apx mode.
as for the official firmwares, you can still install those even if you are unlocked. you just have to do it manually.
Yup, you can just download the firmware zip from asus's website:

Unzip it once(it'l be another zip) and flash that in TWRP. (not sure if it works in cwm. I am biased but I definately recommend twrp:angel Make sure you uncheck flash recovery. reinstall recovery using fastboot because the update deletes it.

No, you need to unlock to take a bootloader backup, which you will not able to take OTA Jelly Been, however, you can download the new Jelly Bean from Asus website and manually flash it.
OK I feel like I understand now. There really aren't any downsides to setting up NvFlash (Asus warranty not an issue, I have Best Buy's super program where I can return the tablet even if I just scratch the screen if I want to).
My initial impression was that if I unlocked I would not be able to update any stock firmware period, and that if I set up NvFlash I could not move from .26.
If I understand correctly I just have to be on .26 to set up NvFlash, and can manually install official Asus firmware after unlocking.

You only can root while you on ICS version .30 or below. Once upgraded to JB there's a different procedure to obtain root. Here is the guide. If you have any question, just ask here. BTW tf700 is not same as galaxy note 2. NO ODIN for tf700.

Thanks. My asus is still on ics. Im gonna root it then upgrade to jellybean cuz ics is laggy! So to be sure here,I use the link to root then i can install cwm,then flash a costume rom like cleanrom straight from rooted ics, even if the costumerom is jellybean?

After rooted on ICS, you need to download OTA rootkeeper from the market to preserve root (keep a copy of root), then use dlpkg method (incremental upgrade) to JB. If you use Asus full JB firmware, it's going to wipe out your root. Once you on JB, use OTA root keeper to restore root, then you need to unlock your device before you can install custom recovery (TWRP/CWM). From here on you can flash any custom rom that you like. I highly recommend TWRP, it works well with tf700. Some people do have issue with CWM.

To install a custom recovery you need to unlock your device, which will void your warranty. If,after unlocking, you want to have a way to recover from any software-induced brick situations, then BEFORE YOU UPGRADE, read the nvflash thread and get the required files from your device. You cannot do this once you upgraded!

Welcome to our little company. I have the same Combination as you have. You will soon notice that this is hard to get as fluid as the note 2.
Also rooting not that easy. I am still with stock with this one.

You have to take a shot at rooting and unlocking, without them, I won't able to use my tf700, my kids actually refused to use it. After Cleanrom, they love it!
Needed to update superuser to get root.
But now it wont unlock!
Wjhen i click the unlock device it gives me some network error!
It seems that asus server wont let me unlock.
I keep getting the message in screenshot.
Ive manually downloaded the stock jb zipfile from asus site. How can I flash it to my device? Idont have cwmrecovery.

I can take a few days or weeks for new devices to become unlockable - apparently Asus' unlocking server is always behind. Usually it helps to be patient and try again after a few days.

Some guides say that you must rename the zip to something specific, I don't know if that is still true. Came from the Prime to the Infinity and was hoping this device was smoother/faster and it seems to be even worse. Should I give up on Asus giving us good software? It's just frustrating having an S3 being so fast and smooth being a high end device and also having 4.1.1. Why the hell can't Asus get it right too?
Should I just unlock and get a custom rom on this? Is that the only way to get this tablet to be fast and smooth?
Sorry to butt in someones thread, but...Got my Infinity today at 11 AM.... Updated to JB, rooted, installed Titanium and all goodies.
Do not feel that it's any slower than Google Nexus 10.1 in no way. Ever screen, it's a less resolution per spec does not look any different.
Happy with it, great tab.

Yes, if you want your device to be fast and smooth you definitly need to unlock and install Cleanrom and Clemsyn kernel. Without them I probably throw mine in the trash.

I encountered a similar issue with another tab. I moved on from there to the TF700 only to relive the same experience. Next time I will do my research before buying another tab. I paid for the tab and I want to have complete control to 'abuse' it!
This is my second day at this, I just need something recent and relevant to follow, most tutorials start with having to install device drivers, which Iv done, and then installing Android SDK and fastboot, which is were the problems start, because even though some guides seem recent, once it gets to the SDK installation part, it redirects to a separate, older tutorial, that looks different from what I'm trying to do. I rooted my tf300t last year and it was was so much easier then this. I can get my tablet to boot with the RCK , Android, USB, Wipe option, but after that I'm lost, some tutorials mention unlocking the bootloader, some don't. I keep telling myself its not worth the headache, but as soon as I use my tablet, and see all the ads, pop ups, and bloated apps, I'm back online trying to figure this out.
Iv checked http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845377 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105949 but don't know if I'm on the right track, some assistance would be greatly appreciated.
If you are running jb then you have to unlock the bootloader first. You can download the apk from the Asus site. Once you do that, you can use the rooting guide in the general section to flash recovery, then flash root. Part 3 of this guide will help you. Its what I used and I've never looked back -

Will that wipe all the data on my tablet? I've been playing with it all day and got quite a few apps and emulators running that I'd rather not lose. Since I'm not rooted yet I can't make a backup using CWM or Titanium Backup first...

Finally got it done, seems to be working and rooted so now I'm happy, thanks for the help its very much appreciated.

It shouldn't no. Every time Asus releases an update, I flash it with twrp. I lose root and recovery, but I simply put it right back on. The data you speak of is unaffected during this process.

I have tried Rooting I have even unlocked my tablet as it seems that this might have made rooting easier I have updated to JB. The easiest mething I found i keep getting a ADB server out of date message i tried doing the ADB Fix program and it says there was not issue please point me in the right direction to root a TF700 easily again my device is unlocked hopefully this helps the process more than hurts

I recommend you use the forum's search feature. You'll find many, many, posts related to your situation.
Or now you are unlocked you can flash a custom stock ROM that is already rooted.
Visit the dev section. All you need is a custom recovery and you are set to go.

search a couple more times on the forum itself and was able to find a method that worked. it did take 3 days of active searching (like 3-5 hours a day) only reason i posted in the first place

Well if you are unlocked you just need to do two things ....
1. Install a custom recovery (head over to TWRP or CWM thread in dev section)
2. Either flash a custom rom or super user (SUPERSU) package from said custom recovery.
If you can't find one I will make you one but I am sure there is one in the dev section.

Can you post a specific method you have tried for rooting the Infinity?
It's really important to include details of your attempt so that those trying to help know where in the process you are exactly.
Typically one needs to return to an Ice Cream Sandwich version 4.03 copy a downloaded file to the external SDCard (preferably while inserted in a card reader on ones Windows PC) rename to "EP201_768_SDUPDATE.ZIP"
Reboot tab and look for the OTA message in the notification bar.
Once returned to ICS (Android 4.03) degugfs can be implemented to attain root.
After root is successful from ICS then OTA Rootkeeper can be used to save root when upgrading to Jellybean.

Not sure there.
I believe the manual update notice may appear even after an unlock.
When I unlocked my bootloader and was running stock for a month I did not get any OTA updates when they released the update for 10.4.4.25. I had to go to their site and put it on my microsd card and update it that way.

I used TWRP and then flashed super user
The way I unlocked was i used the unlock package on the ASUS website I am on 4.1.1 and had no issues what so ever.
