I've had ICS installed on Desire S for the past week. I'm a bit disappointed at some features being missing. I was using standard GB with Sense 3.0 - nothing special.
Well here's my list of troubles - maybe someone can help me with them, or at least they'll be out there for the benefit of anyone taking the dive.
Browser no longer opens default app: Whenever I've installed a special purpose application (Wikipedia, IMDb, Google Play) and I search on the browser, I no longer get the option to open the page in its dedicated app - instead the page loads and I end up using the browser. Most of you might remember the browser on GB used to ask the standard which-app-would-you-like-to-use question, and whether you'd like it defaulted or just once, but it no longer does that.
The mail widget doesn't show the same as the app - I've got Mail configured to sync with Exchange on 6 folders. The widget has stopped showing the different folders - the app still shows them when I select "All Messages" and this was the default view on GB. I've looked for settings near and far, but can't find any to control this.
HTC Sense no longer has widgets to download: I miss the hourglass timer (countdown) and the battery widget.
Youtube widget now occupies 3x2 instead of the sleaker 4x1. Is it YouTube or Sense, I don't know - but I'm not completely satisfied by this change.
To be fair to ICS tho, I believe it's quicker and lighter on the battery - I haven't felt the common complaints of slower. Also, a browser issue that some people had complained about is non-existent in my case - Good for me!
dont know about the mail question ,, but for browser , clear data and clear defualts in setting>apps>browser,,,
htc-sense : yes it is a little wierd but unfortunately , u cant download more htc widgets on sense 3.6 ,
youtube : since i moved to ICS youtube widget is shown like this , on any ics rom,,, so its youtube, not sense
As far as I remember you can set default apps for actions somwhere in the settings. But the truth is that ICS from HTC is really annoying and battery life was worse for me than on GB.

Before i had problems with crashing links and apps weren't opening correctly.
Now for example i click youtube video in facebook app, it opens browser loads that address and asks what app to use. Checked youtube and don't ask in future.
Now works correct ;]

The one you're talking about is in Settings > Apps association.. but that doesn't include the apps I'm installing.
Apparently the response below from remusator is the right way to go... At least it sounds right to me. I'll try it and report back.
To Root? Or not to Root? That is the question.

Its sounds very likely that this is the right solution to follow... However, I'm not rooted. Would you recommend for or against (well, I think since you're rooted you probably will recommend it) but what are potential losses from rooting. I was against early in my warranty and OTA was still an option, but I'm not sure I have a case any more. Shall I just go ahead and root?

root it now !! no risk , it is very, very easy ,, u can get rid of the stock buggy ics , and can have latest android 4.1 jellybean ! ,Sense 4 ! ur phone will be very fast and lighting , can play any HD game bceause u can overclock your cpu ! ,,, but you may lost ur warranty :silly:
You will loose your warranty, however there are methods how to put the phone in original (afaik).
Anyway, most of Desire S phones are probably out of warranty already.
Rooting doesn't exactly mean installing custom roms, btw...
But it comes hand in hand, and it means freedom. You can make whatever you like with your phone.
Rooting on gingerbread was pretty easy and straightforward.
You root only once and install custom recovery. Then you can flash every rom you like (Desire S Development section), even prerooted, so no need to root again ;]
I've started my investigation on rooting, but I'm wondering about S-on/off are those needed also. Would those be enough to modify the build.prop file? What about upgrading bootloader.
Apparently I have too many questions so if you can redirect me to a guide about all those... The 101 of everything root/bootloader etc. Is appreciate it.

You can also find a complete guide thread here. Read as much as you can before you're confident about rooting. If you follow instructions carefully and read the tips to avoid bricking your device then there is very little risk to rooting.

Installing apps to device through market works like a charm, but now the big question, is there any way to uninstall apps a similiar way?

Not at the present time from what it looks like. Google would have to make a script to be sent to your phone to start a removal process of the app you choose to delete. Doesn't seem hard to do, hopefully in the future. That would make it totally awesome! ( not that the Market is not already!) Well within Google's ability.
The app push doesn't seem to work on a Custom ROM. It only has the apps listed that I installed before updating from Stock, it has my last used date as last November, and although it says it is pushing apps to my phone, they never show up.

Something like that is already implemented. As far as I know, Google is able to force a delete of an app from all devices, if it for example contains dangerous code or illegal contend. So the feature is already there, they just need to configure it for personal use.
But I figure, that they have safety-concerns about something like that. (like accidentally deleting an app from a wrong device and loosing all app-data)
Cuz Roms
I'm using Cognition 2.6b (I know I know just tired of flashing right now and its been working perfectly all this time) on a Samsung Captivate.
The market is working perfect for me. Shows all my installs even when they were installed with a custom rom.
Dont forget that your titanium re-installs from different phones wont show up.
I am currently compiling a list of anything that can be safely removed w/o creating an unstable environment.
Any help is appreciated, any programs that you may know that are safe to remove or any that have caused your sys to crash, please share.
-AppPack4.0.88
-EA Games 1.0.16
-Nova 3.1.1
-Polaris Office
-SmartShare 1.0
-TegraZone
-Telenav GPS 6.2.6201050
-WiFi calling [when removed, caused a FC loop for said program. I forced a reboot and everything is good now.]
I've taken off the safest and what I felt were no question asked safe... My experiment comes in to the unknown, like the GooglePartners one or the android.providers.applications and the like. If you have any info about these unknowns or maybe know of a place where I can get get descriptions of said files, I would gratefully accept it. My biggest fear are any issues it may cause that aren't apparent, but at the same time, I want to strip this down and get any unnecessary crap off, especially if it could be what's causing the system to not allow me to access the web w/my current data plan...
Also, if you see something on the list posted as safe or unsafe, but you had a different experience, please share. By cross referencing, I think we can get a more accurate list here right off the bat.
Car Home, TeleNav, Wifi Calling are the only ones I deleted so far.

Along the same lines, is there any way to get a file explorer type program on Android? so annoying not to be able to move stuff around easily.

Root your phone and download Titanium Backup. Besides backing up apps, it has a plethora of other options it can do. Removing apps is one of them.
I believe I've already covered this in one of my earlier threads from about a week ago. I listed the actual APK file name and its common name.

Yeah, a link would be nice because I know I didn't find it w/a search prior to posting this thread. I'm all about keeping forums clear of excess clutter, so link us up.
As far as I know, the names on my list were exactly as they showed on TB including the build. Mine may not be as complete, but it included what the the required info which, for the most part, was the same as the "common name" as you put it. Sorry, but that one sentence just seemed a little pretentious to me.
By the way, did you get adventurous w/ your deletions or is the basic TMo and the like? I was looking to start trimming some more dangerous fat from my phone, just waiting for a time when I'm not going to be rushed, I expect to have to do a few restores.
**found the post, the list is only the *.apk's, but for the most part, again, you can tell what is what, so even if you're not using RE or a similar program, you should still be able to figure it out w/o issue. It's a great post for someone new to the Android platform, more of a bulk, little bit of everything post. Hit it up.

I think of it this way. Just about everything that is in the app drawer that is not an actual system app is safe to remove long as you of course use common sense. Obviously you won't delete the browser market phone camera settings etc. Half of the stuff in system/app is straight forward. Google frame work and calendar etc is obviously not good to delete. But the stuff like cmwallpapers is extra bloat you nay never use. Most of it is common sense. I learned the hard waybthay some apps are not to be touched and that's what a nandroid backup is for.

WILL factory reset wipe these?
I cannot ROOT my phone. #1 because I don't know how. #2 because I can risk voiding warranty.
Factory wipe will only reset it back to how it was when you got the device... with all those apps. I know in ICS it lets you all but remove apps like hides them and kills them but your device doesn't have ICS.
I would suggest getting a third party launcher like Launcher pro or ADW EX and hiding the apps.
On android, no. Without rooting, the baked in apps are there to stay.
you need root you phone and then find some uninstall tool in MARKet.
how do i know for sure some of these apps are there to stay?
I meant to bold some of them I guess they didn't copy over.
Like all these useless rogers apps. pay for a worse navigation? I hope your joking!
crappy music player... no thanks.
If they were on the phone when you got it then they'll be on there after a factory reset, as that's exactly what happened to it prior to being put in the box.
Only rooting will allow you to remove them if they're system apps.
Alternatively you could try a different launcher. I only suggest this because many of the launchers on the Market will allow you to hide apps from your app drawer. Okay, they're still there, but you can just forget about them and carry on regardless.
ya you have to root to do any thing about it. If you do root make sure you make backups before you start uninstalling these programs just in case.
i have the thrilll 4g almost the same phone as you and i know what you mean what i did was get titanium backup pro has to be pro and froze all the apps i dont like so they dont eat battery or ram they still take up space on the card but o well

There are lists for some devices, but it varies from ROM to ROM and device to device. The best way to test is to use something like Titanium Backup and freeze an app. This is equivalent to uninstalling something, without actually uninstalling it. If anything goes wrong you simply unfreeze it.
I was in the same boat you were about a week ago. I started reading about rooting (even watched a few videos) and it seemed pretty straight forward. Since then, not only have I rooted it, I've also upgraded to the latest ICS v12 and did away with all the crap that was on my original Eclair OS. Happy camper now.

I can understand how you might be leery of trying to root your phone for fear of "bricking" it. However, there's plenty of guides out there that can help you "unbrick" it as long as you do the research.
A simple google search came up with this tutorial that seems pretty straight forward.

Hello, This post is intended for users where the following list of conditions below are true, although I'm obviously more than happy for any others to put in any input....
You own a Desire S
You live in the UK
You have a SKY TV subscription (or the house you live in does)
You have a SKY ID user login and have registered your device to access SKY Go
You have installed the SKY GO applicaton
Your device is rooted
You are running a GB based ROM (ie not ICS)
SKY have written then application so that it won't work on rooted devices, even though some people on other devices have managed to bypass this. Some users have had success in using the application OTA RootKeeper which backs up and then hides a devices root (su) - which out of interest will permit rooted users from successfully using Google Play (aka The market) for downloading and watching movies.
No matter what I do now, use the hide root (su) app which works fine, clear the data from SKY Go, de-install it and then re-install the app, when I put in my SKY ID credential I always get the following erorr "PIN Error You have entered an incorrect PIN" (see attachment for screen shot) even though there is no PIN to enter as part of the setup (its not related to my SKY box PIN as that is working fine and I've configured SKY Go to not require any age restrictions)
I would really love to resolve this as want to be able to watch Football from my wonderful device when I'm away from home, and I can't even consider returning my phone to stock in case anyone suggests that.
This application annoyingly hasn't yet been updated by SKY to function on any ICS ROMs.
This is the official link to the SKY Go App thread but is is multi device and therefore in excess of 50 pages with greater than 1500 posts mostly of people saying doesn't work on my device...so I thought I would trap up my local resources (eg you).
[APP] Sky Go for Android (UK ONLY)
As always many thanks to anyone that's even read this far , let alone who bothers to add anything....Cheers
Much as I'd love to help you mate, I'm kinda stuck. It turns out that you can only use Sky Go if you re a direct Sky customer - no use to me as I subscribe through my Virgin Media package. Bit peed-off at that discovery to be fair.
The app fires up OK on my Desire, but I obviously can't sign in. I'm going to chat to a mate of mine about 'borrowing' his Sky details so I can test it on my phone and I'll let you know if I get anywhere with it.

That would be much appreciated. When I first downloaded the Sky Go app I was able to log into it ok, but I was unable to access the channels through it (as the device was rooted).
At that point I had an entry in the Settings-> Accounts & Sync for Sky Go
If I now attempt to add the sky go account through settings add account, when logging in with the correct credentials (that work on the sky website) I also get the same PIN error as shown in the attached screen shot on post #1
it seems that since I've un-installing and re-installing the app (or it may have been auto updated by the market) I can't seem to get that account back as I get the PIN error on entering my sky credentials now, even though previously they went into the app without any issues.
Let me know if you get hold of your mates SKY details and that would assist greatly, this may be a non-starter but would appreciate at least one other person trying!
Thanks

Hello Ben, I can confirm it works fine on our iPad (non-jailbreak) and computer.
I'm yet to try it on my rooted Desire S. When I get home later, ill try and give it a go and report back!

Errhhgg!! bloody iBollox, unfortunately I know it works on that pile of ####...thanks all the same though.
For some stupid reason SKY have had an iPhone application for years and have only just realised that the majority of the world actually uses Android so have finally released a poor quality Android based application (which doesn't even work on ICS showing their real level of commitment and the degree in which they're taking Android seriously!)
My selfish prime concern - is all about rooted GB though, much appreciated that you're willing to try to give it a go though....Much Thanks

Ok, sorry for the late reply!
Believe me, it wasn't my choice on the iPad
I'm already frustrated with the lack of homescreen customization on it! And lack of utility apps (widgets, shortcuts etc)
Ok, didn't get a chance to try it on the Sky Go app, I can't find the bloody ID stuff, so instead I downloaded Google Movies.
This app requires you to NOT be rooted.
I ran the app first, and it came up saying I couldn't use it, as I was rooted...
Then I ran the app you said, and 'disabled' root. Then I ran Google movies, and it is working now! It's detected my device as unrooted! I didn't even reboot after 'disabling' or close the Movie app!
So, the app definetly works... But I couldn't test it on Sky GO, only Google Movies. But the sane theory should apply right? Maybe you could try it on Google movies? Then we can See whether it May just be sky Go not detecting.
Hope that is of some help!

Some screenshots if it helps!
1) I first ran play movies app
2) I used the app to 'unroot/disable root' the device
3) I ran Google play movies, and it worked!
Appreciate the effort Oly,
Unfortunately I'd already tried the un rooting and google market
Was just the sky id and sky go bit that I needed verifying
From home using your sky box which will show your viewing card number and other details that along with some personal stuff like name and address should enable you to get a sky id setup
In order to test sky go or no go as it's been for me
No hurry, thanks all the same
Fortunately my wife has an un rooted DS so I can use her phone if I need, but you know how it is, I want it to work on mine

Ben, have you tried this?

Sent from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3. WAKE UP HTC!!!!
I don't get the pin error so can't help with that.
I can open the app and view channels but they just buffer at 0% forever. With the exception of sky new which restarts the app.
I tried flashing a pre rooted stock rom and hiding root using voodoo and I was able to watch sky news but premium channels still didn't work. From reading the thread in the android application and games folder it looks like you need to edit the default.prop within the kernel as well as hide root.
I don't have a clue how to do this but I'm going to give it a go when I get time later! Hopefully we can get it working I'm surprised more people aren't working on this as it has the potential to be one of the best android apps out there
See this thread for details on the changes needed to the kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535688

Looks I have to use a stock based rom so have edited a stock rom just about to flash here's hoping it works!
A stock ROM that is a Bugger, I love Endy too much to move from it
Swyped from my DesireS
I know what you mean mate but for Sky Sports on my my phone I think I can live with it!
I have attached the modified boot.img if you want to try it I can confirm it is working for me using Hyperion V2.1 with the boot.img modified and root hidden using voodoo
Well that's well worth it, brilliant work.....THANKS
If only I hadn't recently deleted my old backup of that ROM, I suspect one may still be on my PC
I wonder how it checks to see if we're on stock? Did you see if it works on stock sense v3.0?
Is it worth editing the build.prop file and replacing values, in an attempt to fool it further? without having to switch bases?
When I get an opportunity (probably the weekend) I'll try that.
Swyped from my DesireS
I used Hyperion v2.1 and changed so.secure to 1 within the default.prop in the kernel.
Great Rom on its own anyway think i'll just stick with this until another solution is found.
Here is a link to download it from my dropbox. http://db.tt/VISCrZ2y
Let me know if you managed to get it to work on Endy!
Just hide root BEFORE you install the sky go app and it should work fine.
I am using CM9 but still cant get this to work I have tried hiding root and using the modded skygo but still no luck. really do not want to go back to stock rom.
I am guessing nobody has had any more joy with this?
Every few days my phone generates a .98GB file. I thought it did this when i debugged it to the computer, but it just happens when ever it feels like it.
I don't take massive amounts of pictures or videos. I only have like 1gb of music on my phone so I don't know where this file comes from.
location, name, size, type of file is-- Computer>Removable Disk(G>DCIM>.thumbnails// THUMBDATA4--1967290299// .98GB
Auto run is turned off on the computer when device is connected. Everything is set to do not run with the pop up when phone connects to computer
when ever this file is created I can't do anything on my phone: Open pictures, play music, open browser, play games.
This file cannot be found on the phone by its self because nothing will open. File gets created on the phone storage and not the sd card.
Ok so I have heard of this before but I have never experienced it....
Are you running ICS? If so, upgrade to JB, its way better
Are you using the stock gallery? Try to mess with some settings inside gallery.
Determined to stay on your rom? Try Quickpic, its WAY better/faster than stock and free. No ads either.
I'm trying to think why it would be so big, have you tried going to settings/apps/gallery and did the force stop/clear data and cache options? After that go to the settings/apps/media storage and do the same there. Reboot and see if that fixes it. Lmk how it goes.

Yes, I am running standard ICS. I'll look into getting JB. I've never had any device with JB let alone upgrading a device to JB... I'll look on here for some step by step instructions
I am using stock gallery no settings that I have found could be creating this file. I took a screen shot of it but can't post due to not enough posts on XDA.
I've cleared all caches, looked at every setting, had a few people who said they were really good with android look at this situation and they were stumped.

Yea if I remember correctly I think this bug was for ICS only, though I may be wrong. Upgrading is pretty easy, just use the Blaze Bible on the development page and it will have all the links you are looking for. The steps will be root it, add a recovery, then pick a rom. The whole process shouldnt take more than 15 minutes. It is well worth it and actually adds more control over permissions and flexibility. Also, going back to stock is even easier just in case you need to send it back.

Actually, This Was Happening To Me On CM10 official Up Until About A Month Ago. Idk If It Was An Update They Pushed Or Me Wiping Cache And Dalvik That Fixed It, But One Or The Other
