Every few days my phone generates a .98GB file. I thought it did this when i debugged it to the computer, but it just happens when ever it feels like it.
I don't take massive amounts of pictures or videos. I only have like 1gb of music on my phone so I don't know where this file comes from.
location, name, size, type of file is-- Computer>Removable Disk(G>DCIM>.thumbnails// THUMBDATA4--1967290299// .98GB
Auto run is turned off on the computer when device is connected. Everything is set to do not run with the pop up when phone connects to computer
when ever this file is created I can't do anything on my phone: Open pictures, play music, open browser, play games.
This file cannot be found on the phone by its self because nothing will open. File gets created on the phone storage and not the sd card.
Ok so I have heard of this before but I have never experienced it....
Are you running ICS? If so, upgrade to JB, its way better
Are you using the stock gallery? Try to mess with some settings inside gallery.
Determined to stay on your rom? Try Quickpic, its WAY better/faster than stock and free. No ads either.
I'm trying to think why it would be so big, have you tried going to settings/apps/gallery and did the force stop/clear data and cache options? After that go to the settings/apps/media storage and do the same there. Reboot and see if that fixes it. Lmk how it goes.

Yes, I am running standard ICS. I'll look into getting JB. I've never had any device with JB let alone upgrading a device to JB... I'll look on here for some step by step instructions
I am using stock gallery no settings that I have found could be creating this file. I took a screen shot of it but can't post due to not enough posts on XDA.
I've cleared all caches, looked at every setting, had a few people who said they were really good with android look at this situation and they were stumped.

Yea if I remember correctly I think this bug was for ICS only, though I may be wrong. Upgrading is pretty easy, just use the Blaze Bible on the development page and it will have all the links you are looking for. The steps will be root it, add a recovery, then pick a rom. The whole process shouldnt take more than 15 minutes. It is well worth it and actually adds more control over permissions and flexibility. Also, going back to stock is even easier just in case you need to send it back.

Actually, This Was Happening To Me On CM10 official Up Until About A Month Ago. Idk If It Was An Update They Pushed Or Me Wiping Cache And Dalvik That Fixed It, But One Or The Other

So I've been noticing that after a certain amount of use my Hero eventually slows down to the point where typing on the keyboard is frustrating because of the slow response. I did some searching and I came across this online
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3453
since I'm no where near the level of a dev, I figured I'd put this out there and see if anyone can make heads or tails of it, and possibly create a signed-zip so we can just use the update feature in the recovery screen to flash it to our system.
Seems legit as a fix, and apparently this was something that was a known problem with Android 1.5 that I guess has been fixed with 2.0.
Any Dev help would be hot.
Excellent. Thank you for tracking that down.
The TL;DNR explanation: Location services are causing multiple "heartbeats" on the phone all on top of each other. One guy counted as many as 253 in 5 seconds. This consumes the CPU. I will look at the patch.
Would disabling location services be a temporary fix?

Yes. We're pretty close to 2.1 though so shouldn't need more then that.
ive seen this problem too but not until recently, it lags the phone and drains the battery amazingly fast.

I'm taking a wait and see approach on the 2.1 progress right now, what's there looks very promising but without the camera, accel., & (for me anyway because I do have alot of apps that i use) a2sd, I'm content with Fresh 1.0, just wanna get help get that issue solved cuz I'm sure I'm not the only one who is experiencing it.
PS: I know I said I have alot of apps, but I know that's not the cause because the same thing happened when I did a wipe and just left things "stock" with Fresh Rom 1.0 for a few days
If they got the accel and wifi tether working, I'd make the jump to 2.1, but I need the accel for work, and the wifi tether for internet.
What app can be used to show the system_server process? I use task manager but it isn't listed. I want to monitor this process.
Also, does anyone know about the patch? How Do you apply it?
1) I can't answer the first question. I just took the advice here and turned all location services off. My phone is back to its snappy self. The only way I'm really impacted by having to do this right now (I'm sure I'll use this phone for more after 2.1) is using google maps. I already kept GPS off when I wasn't using it but having to go into the settings and allow Location Setting before using gmaps is a PITA.
2) I know very little about android and ROM DEV but think the "patch" is programming code, only useful to people who know how to read and write it.

RoboTop???
You can use DDMS from the Android SDK toolkit to monitor processes running on the phone. Should be able to pull up a process list from there.
Now, I'm using Locale but not with Location settings for my different profiles. I also have Location settings turned on for use with Google Maps as well as the HTC Flip Clock / Beautiful Widgets Home. Surprisingly, my system_server process is sitting at 0% right now, and the phone has been on for over a day. Both DDMS and running "top -n 1" in the adb shell confirm this. If there's much of a change over the day, I'll be sure to let you know. So, it's possible that HTC found and fixed this issue with their SenseUI CDMA 1.5 build. Unlikely, but possible.
So I was seeing this issue even with the modified services.jar from that thread. Granted I didn't test it very long and it was only maxing out at 1%, but it was enough for me to feel that it wasn't working.
I have since removed HTC's location service. After rebooting it looks as if because the phone couldn't find HTC's service anymore it installed the stock one. Time to see if it makes any difference.
with my BB for example there was an application which rebooted your phone at a custom time that u have set .. is there an application that can be used to do the same with the hero? ... reboot device while u are sleeping.. so it runs nice and quick for u the next day?

On the Fresh ROM thread I thought you said that it was using 16% previously... and is this an issue that's apparent immediately or is it something that gets worse with time?
Any chance of including the modified services.jar in the next release even if it doesn't immediately appear to make a difference? I mean, if it's not crashing things and is supposed to be an improvement, then why not stick it in there, right?
Just read nearly that entire chain of messages. now somebody (fresh, ima callin you out!) dooo eeeet!
What's the word on progress for this in Fresh ROM? I have found it to be a very significant issue for me (and apparently so has my roommate), as I use location services quite a lot. GMaps being most in particular, but some other apps as well (Aloqa, Sprint Navigation). I'm really glad there's a workaround that doesn't involve a reboot!
I looked at the other link and I have downloaded both the services.jar file and the LocationManagerService.patch. Which one should I apply and do I apply it? I am having problems with this now.

The bug is that it gets worse over time. I can include it for sure. I believe the reason it's not working is because our hero's code is all stored in services.odex, not services.jar. And I haven't been able to deodex that file yet. But I'll include it regardless because it can't hurt.

I'm working on testing whether disabling HTC's location service will fix our issue. However with the release of the kitchen I was rebooting my phone non-stop. Impossible for me to know if it was working or not.

The patch is designed to apply to the source, so that won't help you. The services.jar would replace the one that's already there.
turning off location has been a dramatic difference in speed. its obvious theres something to that. it would get so bad the whole phone would lag
I am hoping to get a custom ROM made for both the Next6 and Next7, so if anyone would like to help here are the factory ROM's.

Right now my friend and I are working on making the Next6 have a full read/write partition with permanent root access.
I'm interested. The Next6 is on sale at Big Lots for $149...
I'm looking to pick one up. Please keep m posted!

I just got mine yesterday and subscribed to this thread. Please keep us informed.
Li'm currently counting down the minutes till biglots opens. in a rush to cash my check, and grab my new cheapo tablet, to be home in time to go to my kids dr appointment.
anyone got a full list of specs on the next6?
EDIT: z4root works perfectly. Now I'm waiting on this ota firmware update to download.
It feels sluggish compared to my hd2 but I expected that. But it does render HD video quite nicely. Rooting was a breeze, and if you pick it up at biglots, be sure to splurge 15 extra for an 8gb SD card.
I spoke to the company today because my OTA has been trying to download for 2 days.
Apparently the OTA only changes the Boarder Books to a different carries since Boarders is closed. IT DOES NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE OR OS.
Please let us know of any ROMS available on this device that would be very helpful.

Were you able to get a perminent root with z4root? I could only get a temporary root to work. What tools to use for a perminent solution
Got my next6 a day ago. Thanks all for the BigLots tip.
i think the way the image is stored on the tablet you'll have to flash a rom that is already rooted. Im not very familiar with cooking roms but i know you'll have to use afptool to unpack the image make the changes recreate the crc for the image and repack it.
From what I've been able to glean from frantic web searching, the system partition is cramfs and is read only. Temporary root only.
Also, its possible to access the recovery menu using adb reboot recovery, but its not of much use since the thing only has two dpad buttons.

I am very interested in this also ; I have tried to run some of the next 2 & 3 roms on this device (and they boot) but they don't really work right (IE: the touch screen doesn't work)
hopefully we can get this going!
i've got the rom dumped, just having a spot of bother mounting a cramfs file under ubuntu.
since i've last posted i found out a bit more about the hardware involved, and how its more or less a generic 7 inch rockchip tablet, minus a few buttons, which means a good majority of the work has already been done.

bit of difference is the rkupdater program doesn't work unless you can get the tab into a flasher mode of some sort. However, if you just drop the update.img in the sdcard root and insert the card while the tab is running, it seems to kick into the updater properly.
hold down the right hand arrow
with the Pad turned off hold the right hand arrow to put the tablet into update mode ; then you can use the RKAndroidBatchUpgrade.exe..... (you do need the USB driver - found on the first page of the next2 next3 thread)

thanks. figured out through trial and error if i held both facebuttons and hit the reset while it was plugged up, it'd get into update mode.
your way needs less buttons. still at a loss because while i can dump the update.img and extract it, i cant seem to open up the system.img inside of it.
any suggestions? i pulled it using rkdump.
EDIT: nvm got it, had to pull the system.img from the device separately and add it back to update.img

Next6 Base rom for editing
heres a stock copy of update.img with an editable system.img if you feel like adding your own apps or customizing it a bit further.
happy modding
I got one of these bad boys today and its a pretty decent little fellow.
I think with a root and well made custom rom it can really shine.
EDIT, does anyone know a way to change the icons they used? I dont really care for them because they look warped and garrish. I did manage to replace the launcher with launcherPro, "adw would crash and default to a debug launcher".
Also does anyone know how one could update SAM? Can I just reinstall the apk and it replace teh factory installed one? Also is there any better marketplaces than SAM? It seems kinda limited and lacking.
I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the next6 from 2.1 to 2.2/3~
I'm not requesting it or anything as I personally don't know anything about android or how the next6's rom works.
Thanks
I believe it has to be rooted before you can upgrade the firmware to another version.
Also I have noticed a issue with the custom rom above. I cannot download any apps on the marketplace for some reason. Anyone know how I could clear its cache or reset this device?
EDIT: If I do a "factory reset" though the privacy section in settings, it seems to fix the market. Of course this completely wipes the device, also the market seems to break the same way again, extremely easily.
Basically you can download a few apps, go to the homescreen, then come back to find that you magically cannot download ANY applications. Ive tried killing the market app using the advance task manager, ive tried clearing the markets cache, and even restarting the device. The only thing that works is completely restoring the device. I am hoping that you will be able to fix it, or tell me how to fix it. XD
I installed the following applications. Not sure if this matters, but it seems like market breaks when I make ADW the default launcher.
ADW Launcher
Nook
Also I have a SD card in the unit.
EDIT:
I have rooted out the cause of the problem, changing the default homescreen/launcher seems to screw with market. So while you can install and use another launcher, you CANNOT set it as the default without it screwing up the android market.
EDIT:
Humm, well color me confused, because last night I managed to switch the home launcher without it interfearing with market. But this morning when I booted up the device I could not download any applications. Could it be possible that it is deleting key files when I restart the device?
So I got the Nexus S, i9023, after spending a good amount of time trying to figure how to do the Root, CWR, ROM, I still can't get things to work properly.
My main issues with the Nexus are the camera while recording cause it sucks!, the media playback controls on the lock screen and the speed of the unit in general, I mean N4G.com feels as if the phone was using a browser from the middle ages!!!!
I've been going around the forums but is kinda hard to read along threads of 100 pages of posts, not a guide with straight answers, just for the steps I have managed to accomplish I had to use Youtube, Google and another 4 pages + these forums to make sense of what's first and then go on "trial & error" cause some of the steps have updates on different pages that others don't even mention.
So, I was able to Root, CWR and then install CM7, then I reverted to stock cause the Market is gone.....lovely....but is even better afterwards.....
So the phone works on the stock Android again, but now I can't make the phone to boot on recovery again so I can use the CWM options, I can't make RM to install or run anything, the phone will simply does nothing...and if I try on flashing the Clockworkmod recov then I get a "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"........and I have SU installed.........
Btw, how do I install a kernel??? or flash the camera (if that's possible)....
Thx to any kind soul who could share it's own experience....
I recommend you do more reading and research before you flash anything. Cm7 does not come with market for legal reasons, you have to flash it separately. To flash a kernel you just download and flash it in recovery.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
In your current situation you need to use fastboot to reflash recovery and use recovery to reflash superuser.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
there is a one click root option which i keep on my desktop. way more than one click but i it does everything pretty much for u. try doing that.
Ns4g.com is bad because they have terribly coded flash content.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Hello all, thx for the replies, N4G can't be that bad since the issue repeats itself at other pages like cnn, espn or even worst if u try eltiempo.com (newspaper from Colombia), the last one lags horrible on pc using FF and doesn't even load as full page on the Nexus or my N8, that page is so badly designed that even the mobile version sucks (problem is the news back home are kinda best shown there....).
In any case, as I said before, "Trial & Error", I already have installed CM7, Liquid SR, Miui and Oxygen, loved Oxygen, kept Miui, Liquid is a nice idea but needs work and CM7 is a bit rough.
So far I've learned how to restore from an image of a previous ROM (kept my original backed up in case!!!), also how to reinstall SU in case I have to go back to stock, how to install a new kernel (thx to Google and not the Search in the forums!!!), I did also overclocked my NS to 1.2G and seems pretty stable.
Things I still don't like and will look in the future to solve are the issues with the camera, Miui fixes part of the issues with lag while recording, I got a snag during a test recording made today, also the controls are not that amazing for the camera, no Zoom???, and the Gallery is not a plain gallery but mainly a file browser which makes it confusing if u forget what folder ur supposed to check...
Also the issue with the battery not hitting 100%...kinda silly....
In all it's been good but the time spent is a pain, mainly cause there is no explanation about how to apply the files, what order, etc, is nice to find things here in XDA but is rather annoying to have to use Google to find things around...
Thx again for the replies!!!
Hey, new to these forums and new to rooting. I got my sidekick about a month ago (always loved em) and was dissapointed by all the bloatware it came with and how it likes to lag and freeze up quite often.
I didn't want to get a new phone as I figured with a root and new ROM all could be saved.
Well I rooted it myself (using SuperOneClick) a few days ago. Installed superuser, titanuim backup, and rom manager.
Used titanium backup right away to make a copy of full factory system, then got rid of what bloatware I felt safe getting rid of and made another backup.
Now I wana look at flashing a new rom but aren't too sure how to go about it?
Read a few things here and there and aren't 100% sure, id say I'm around 75-80% on how to do it.
A lot of places say I need Nandroid for backup, true? Or can I stick with Titanium and go on?
Next, I can't seem to find many good roms w/ detailed info about installing it and about the rom istelf. Id like to know wat it comes with, wat it doesn't, wat ill need to make it work right and some images to see how it changes the appearance and any performance boosts.
Maybe I'm not looking in the right places or searching the right things.
So what I'm asking is if anyone knows a good rom (ik eveyone has opinions so ill look into all) and how to go about installing the rom and pros/cons of each.
Thanks so much for any and all help guys!
Also if someone thts gotten rid of bloatware on the SK4G, what did you get rid of? I dnt wana take off anything ill need or important.
Again thanks!
I've also been having problems with the phone turning off if the screen is off after a while and sometimes when I turn it on it says something like 'new sidekick tune a few things to get started' and takes about a good 5-10 min before its even useable.
The problem started before the root and as another reason I rooted hoping to fix the problem with some tweaking or flashing a new ROM.
Anyone heard of this problem before or have advice about it?
So I've been looking at the Glorious Overdose V2 and V5. Which have less problems/bugs?
I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Features seem to be similiar.
Some say that on V5 they score lower quadrants but seems to be faster but on V2 ppl are saying battery life and performance are both bumped big and V2 sees to has a battery % mod.
Which of the 2 are better? Or is there anything out there better than either?
Most of the devs include installation instructions with their ROMs, which are usually pretty easy to follow. Just make sure you follow the ones for the recovery you have (orange or red). If you haven't flashed the voodoo kernel, you're probably on the orange recovery. Once you flash a new ROM, you'll get rid of most of the T-Mo bloat. Personally, all my stuff is backed up with Google, Evernote, etc., so I don't worry about making Titanium or nandroid backups. I've tried a few different ROMs, and here are my thoughts:
GOV33+LEAN-PERFORMANCE-RELEASE - Started out good, but over time SU stopped working, battery life degraded. Liked LauncherPro. Maybe it just needs to be reinstalled
neXus_JB_v1.2 - Colors hard to read (white on gray). Seems like too many unnecessary apps (live wallpapers, etc).
MeMoRy - Based on GOV3.3 Lean. Uses Lightning Launcher, which I didn't like at first, but it's very simple and presumably lightweight. However, the supplied Jelly Bean keyboard keeps crashing. I installed the ICS keyboard and removed the JB keyboard, and this is now the ROM I use. You can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837071
Your phone shouldn't turn off just because your screen is off for a while. Are you sure you have a good battery? Your phone will go dead if the batter is dead. If you get the "tune up" screen again, just go through the settings and you shouldn't get it again until you flash a new ROM.
Battery is good, holds a charge all day with moderate use.
When I do get the tune screen, I unlock it, and everything is fine and normal.
Ill start looking for more ROMs and info on them.
And the orange/red thing confuses me. How do I know what I am?
Okay to root is simple to flash a ROM you first need a "recovery" and a "update" file which is located either in sticky on the development page or you can find my thread which has basics you may need
Aldo have the ROM you want on the sk put in downloads on sd
Move recovery to system/bin
Move update to SD card but not in any folders
Now reboot into recovery
Reinstall packages
Now the menu will be yellow
Backup using nan droid if you don't wanna lose a lot of stuff
Now you need to wipe everything on main page an then in advance page if
go to mounts mount all except data I believe (I posted guide a few time but no longer use phone)
install zip from SD card now wait 10 mins an listen to device should say everything is mounted
Now you have a flashed ROM
Now from this point if you want to use a new ROM you
Hold power button go to recovery should now be red
Backup just invade you like the last one but wanna see the new ROM
Check mounts (should be fine but better safe then sorry)
Now wipe everything from main page and advance page
Now install new zip
Going back from one ROM to another
Recovery > restore > "file" done
Sorry I have been on sg3 forums a lot now don't use SK at all anymore either
But before I left I preferred ricandroid nexus roms most up to date I believe
All guides should be find able in other fourms as I post it a lot to help people

Well things have been going good on the sk4g for a while. Didn't flash a rom as I feel uncapable so I left it rooted and only removed 4 apps tht I seen as bloatware tht I don't use. (Removed right after root in the very beginning).
Well the other day I went to update an app I got recently after rooting (theCHIVE) and it'll download and start installing but I get a red/orange warning triangle in to notification bar saying packing file not signed correctly?
I don't unerstand why its doing this?
Tried it on my normal 4g connection an on wifi as well, same problem. Any help guys?
Your issue is the apk the person didn't sign it correctly or the update took out 2.1 an went to newer firmwares.
If anything back up with titanium just that app you are updating. And then delete the app an install the new one. You then can go back to titanium an restore data
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I tried that and I got the same message, ill try emailing the dev and see what the problem could be?
This is gonna be long, so please bear with me.
New Android user here, since December and never looked back.
But I have a big problem that just started two days ago, and coincided with the installation of Vonage for Android.
My N7100 is rooted and I also installed a new kernel (Perseus), but kept the stock ROM for the time being, but I'm getting closer to installing CyanogenMod ROM through ROManager Premium.
I just read the article posted here by Will Verduzco on Android security which led me to a bunch of articles on VOIP and it's scary.
My problem is that my N7100 will kind of do a half-baked reset without my doing anything... and then after watching the download light blinking on my router here in the house, Airport is downloading for about five minutes and then, BANG!!!, up comes the screen asking me for my language, and to set up a Google acct, Samsung acct, and I have to re-enter the passwords for my WiFi, etc, etc... you know the drill.
What's causing this?
I've been on XDA hundreds of times doing research on one thing or another, and I've removed all the Google bloatware possible except for the few things that I want to keep, and I got that comprehensive list from the XDA site... but after my device gets done doing it's thing, everything is back with dozens of notifications... AND Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, Triangle Away, SuperSu, Root Explorer, ES File Explorer/Task manager, etc are all missing and no backups on the SD card. WHAT!!!
One more thing which might be peripheral to my problem.
A couple of days ago I installed the new OS for my Mac... 10.9.
With my prior OS, I uninstalled almost all of anything that said "Google" from my computer but have to go through it again and repeat.
This morning, I do a search for anything Google on my drive, and came up with files with executable update files that all had "Android/GT-N7100 in the path.
Yes, I did connect to Kies by USB just once to check things out there but I don't think that's the underlying problem. Maybe it is.
I've seen some REAL genius help on this site, and hope that somebody that has a grasp on my problem can help.
I joined this site a few minutes ago just to ask this question, by the way.
If I went off track as to the posting guidelines on the site, just tell me.
Hey, I'm pushing 70 and the mind wanders. Haha!
Thanks in advance, guys!

WHAT!!!

as for your note 2 problem, so your saying you flashed Cyangenmod on it correct? if so did you flash a the current gapps for whatever version you flashed? im thinking that's the problem, otherwise another flash of the cyangenmod ROM might fix it.

No, I haven't flashed CM yet, but as I said, I'm moving in that direction after looking a a bunch of ROMs.
This is gonna sound kind of dumb, but the reason that I'm holding on to the stock rooted ROM is just because of one active screen saver, and that's Windy Weather. Like when it's raining here, you get rain drops sliding down the inside of the glass. HA!
And believe it or not, I agonize over the small stuff... like whether or not I want to go with an AOSP or AOKP ROM.
Believe it or not, when I got done with massaging the stock ROM today, all of the junk that I had formerly removed through Titanium Backup were still gone even though it showed that it was all re-downloaded in the Notifications.
I just have a sneaking hunch that the Vonage VOIP App that I installed had "something" to do with my problem, so I have not reinstalled it, and I also destroyed all of the Play Store links with Titanium Backup and still no problem.
I'm still running the stock 4.1.2 stock ROM.
Even if I do go with CM, I'm a little worried that if I download Gapps, something in there just might want to gain control and zap my device again.
Anywhooo... for the last several hours, I'm not having any problems.
Thanks for your reply.
