List of apps safe to remove... [in progress] - T-Mobile LG G2x

I am currently compiling a list of anything that can be safely removed w/o creating an unstable environment.
Any help is appreciated, any programs that you may know that are safe to remove or any that have caused your sys to crash, please share.
-AppPack4.0.88
-EA Games 1.0.16
-Nova 3.1.1
-Polaris Office
-SmartShare 1.0
-TegraZone
-Telenav GPS 6.2.6201050
-WiFi calling [when removed, caused a FC loop for said program. I forced a reboot and everything is good now.]
I've taken off the safest and what I felt were no question asked safe... My experiment comes in to the unknown, like the GooglePartners one or the android.providers.applications and the like. If you have any info about these unknowns or maybe know of a place where I can get get descriptions of said files, I would gratefully accept it. My biggest fear are any issues it may cause that aren't apparent, but at the same time, I want to strip this down and get any unnecessary crap off, especially if it could be what's causing the system to not allow me to access the web w/my current data plan...
Also, if you see something on the list posted as safe or unsafe, but you had a different experience, please share. By cross referencing, I think we can get a more accurate list here right off the bat.

Car Home, TeleNav, Wifi Calling are the only ones I deleted so far.

Sorry for maybe a dumb question, but I'm very new to Android....How exactly DO you delete apps? I'm used to Windows Mobile where you can delete stuff pretty easily.
Along the same lines, is there any way to get a file explorer type program on Android? so annoying not to be able to move stuff around easily.

Root your phone and download Titanium Backup. Besides backing up apps, it has a plethora of other options it can do. Removing apps is one of them.

I believe I've already covered this in one of my earlier threads from about a week ago. I listed the actual APK file name and its common name.
I had like 11-12 deleted.

Yeah, a link would be nice because I know I didn't find it w/a search prior to posting this thread. I'm all about keeping forums clear of excess clutter, so link us up.
As far as I know, the names on my list were exactly as they showed on TB including the build. Mine may not be as complete, but it included what the the required info which, for the most part, was the same as the "common name" as you put it. Sorry, but that one sentence just seemed a little pretentious to me.
By the way, did you get adventurous w/ your deletions or is the basic TMo and the like? I was looking to start trimming some more dangerous fat from my phone, just waiting for a time when I'm not going to be rushed, I expect to have to do a few restores.
**found the post, the list is only the *.apk's, but for the most part, again, you can tell what is what, so even if you're not using RE or a similar program, you should still be able to figure it out w/o issue. It's a great post for someone new to the Android platform, more of a bulk, little bit of everything post. Hit it up.

I have heard that you don't delete it but you freeze the apps. So I got the apps bloat freezer and froze

Is there any other apps. that I can freeze. Since I have rooted my G2x I haven't notice any better battery life. Can someone give me any hints to making my battery life better.

I deleted all the live wallpapers and visual wallpapers
voice dialing (a waste of time. Faster to dial the number from a favorites list)
Pico tts (what a waste of time)
pro tips (useless in any custom rom. Anyone flashing roms probably has enough experience with android to not need this worthless widget)
All preinstalled games
All t-mobile crap ware
News and stock Widgets. (Bookmarks on desktop to news I really want)
Wifi calling (sounds like **** anyways)
Google search bar (I bookmark Google on desktop I don't need another app running for that)
Desk clock (why part of rom? )
Analog clock (why is this even part of the rom)
Car home. (Another one why is it even part of the rom)
Email (I only use gmail)

Yeah welcome to xda... expect to see at least 36 more threads like this one 72 more about why noobs love or hate g2x and probably a thousand more threads by lazy people who don't know what a rom or kernel are let alone how to use the search function. Google must be way to advanced for these turds to use as well.
I wonder if they even wipe their own arses ...

I think of it this way. Just about everything that is in the app drawer that is not an actual system app is safe to remove long as you of course use common sense. Obviously you won't delete the browser market phone camera settings etc. Half of the stuff in system/app is straight forward. Google frame work and calendar etc is obviously not good to delete. But the stuff like cmwallpapers is extra bloat you nay never use. Most of it is common sense. I learned the hard waybthay some apps are not to be touched and that's what a nandroid backup is for.

[Q] Uninstalling Cyanogen native apps? and other Q's

Hi guys,
I rooted my phone and have been using Cyanogen since and never looked back. The phone works like charm, and with 2.2.1 installed, they keyboard is much better and I can actually use the phone for dialing (the number pad doesn't get stuck!)
I looked in the form but my search brings back hundreds of results that do not seem related to what I need. Cyan comes with some apps I simply do not ever use: The car home one, terminal emulator, DSPMAnager (what is it anyway?) and the voice dialer. First, are any of these apps are needed to run the phone, and can I re-install them separately (without reloading the whole ROM) if something goes wrong? Then, the question is, how do I uninstall them, since I do not have an uninstall option? Is it possible to uninstall Google Talk (because I think it comes as a part of the Google Tools or whatever...), since it does not allow me to log in for more than one account?
Then, I have a more general question:
Is Cyan with gingerbread available from the HTC Hero? Would you guys recommend it? I don't feel I really need it because the phone is fine, but maybe I'm missing out on something I do not know... what are the big new things, besides the keyboard (which I understand can be installed individually anyway).
Thanks!
Use titanium backup it uninstalls stock apps. But be careful which ones u uninstall they will mess ur phone up and cause foreclosures

1. Like the above poster said, use titanium backup to uninstall. It's free in the market. All four of those apps can be removed with no ill effects, however, I would keep terminal emulator in case you ever need to push our pull apk's, decide to use the batt-tweak. Stuff like that. DSPManager is a equalizer.
2. Yes, gb is available in cyanogenmod flavor right here: http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=heroc It had some minor lag issues with the home screen, but camera and gps is working for me. Not sure if compcache and jit is, though.

I'd watch out for Google Talk though...doesn't that break some push notifications (i.e. Gmail)? Could be wrong, have been before
Off the top of my head without looking at a fresh install, these are safe to remove without doing anything special (I dont have any of them):
DSP, Protips, PacMan, FileManager, email (if you only use the gmail app), Live Wallpaper Picker, CMStats, CM Wallpaper, Latin tutorial, Development, Theme Chooser (and the other theme apk along with the two themes preloaded in the /system/app folder), Spare Parts, ROM Manager...If you want to know about any others, just ask...there are far more I have removed, but like I said, they are gone, so I don't remember them
how about fotakill? don't know what it does, so I didn't remove it.

No, I think you may be right. For whatever reason, I was thinking google voice, which isn't even part of the gapps or cm apps. Leave talk installed.

What can Androidiani do for you or me?

So a fair amount of people are using Androidiani Open Recovery, myself included now, but I have a few questions about it. Namely what everything does. In the menu there are all sorts of things to do and use, but I am not sure what they actually do. I know about memhack, kernal optimization and zipalign, but what about all the other Froyo mods and tweaks in there?
For some reason, I can't attach a screen shot to this, but some of them are Istall Mod -conservative/interactive, Memory manager, vm heap size,...
The most helpful feature of AOR is the possibility to check the sd card. No need to plug the card to the pc for checks.
I also use zipalign after restoring my apps in a new rom.
With the adblock script you can update the host file to prevents ads in apps or in browser.
So, the one thing about Androidiani is that it's developed by A853 users, so I've never touched the baseband utilities out of fear it will do something bad.
It's nice to have access to system apps to get rid of what I don't want (or pull out a system apk) after a new flash. I also keep a copy of the latest system apps as a theme so after a new flash I can just apply the "theme" & have all the current versions of Maps, Facebook, etc.
I've never tried the kernel optimization because I wasn't' sure if I should use the froyo or the eclair as we still have the eclair kernel.

I know better than that. Baseband messing is Badddd! I am more interested in the Memory tweaks and things like that.

I tried the one for Froyo and not sure if it worked or not but let's just say it didn't "screw" anything up (as far as I know). I did have to re-root though and re-allow all the superuser permissions and overclock again. But as far as performance, it didn't hinder anything and it might be a plecebo effect, but I feel it is somewhat more stable. Could be in my head though.
Mioze7Ae ~ This is one of those times I was talking about in the SUperoneclick question where I had to use Unversal Androot and it worked just fine.

Fix permission will work if it was a permission problem.
Got a question about this. After a few weeks of flashing the special, Wanhu, CM6...I noticed that AOR wouldn't let me flash update.zips for some reason. Awhile ago, I had this problem and either 3rdstring or Mz advised me to reinstall AOR. I did and everything worked. Now that the the CM6 is out and primarily done through updated.zips, I found a problem again. When AOR installs, it loads up a bunch of pix that show up in my media gallery. If I leave them in there, I can use the update.zip just fine. If I delete these pix, then it creates the problem that will not let me use that function. I can probably put a .nomedia in there somewhere, but not sure where. Has anyone else had this problem. It is AOR 3.3 in case you are wondering.
I read through this thread a week back. Im now using Androidiani with stock CB 2.1 Could anyone please guide me to which optimizations to use with 2.1, how they work and what works on our XT720? I would really appretiate it thanks!

What I have used is the Zipalign, obviously the wipes and resets, the fix permissions works really well (especially when flashing in between ROMs), Mchlbenner uses the Overclock settings. Haven't used anything in the memory settings like VM heap or anything like that.
Probably the things I use the most are in the menu utilities and the SD and SD-ext scans to make sure card is working. I usually do this before I flash a ROM and then once after I boot up totally. Seems redundant but it has saved me a card before b/c of a bad partition.
Mioze added a script for link2sd/app2ext (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1177020&page=61) sorry don't know how to put just a plain "here" and have the link embedded.
If you use any of the modding menus, use the Eclair one b/c it is based off the kernal version. I know that 3rdstring uses AOR quite often to apply apps and such. May want to ask him about setting that up.

No problem. I think it's time we start creating our own baseband files for XT720. I've been poking around inside the Androidiani ones. I think they're just updates that only mess with the /system partition, so maybe worst case your phone stops working with the network until you get the right baseband back in. I think I know where to extract files from the SBFs to create our own, so we should be able to start making some XT720 specific ones.

I think the hosts file in the adblock is way old by now. At least it seems I start to get ads every few weeks and have to install a new hosts file. I just hosed my phone so I can't check, but I think AdFree is the app I use for that.
I already made baseband update for our phone. I used one from androidian and replace our files with theirs.

I figured out the maps issue. Apparently the new version of google maps has 3D maps and wasn't avaibable in my country. I just used market enabler and downloaded it. Lol its stupid, I mean dont let someone update just because of country they live in? Ill wont have 3D at home, but I can use it if i travel abroad. Anyways!
I use adfree too but the recent update screwed everything up. I just revert to previous build using TB and it still works for me. If I can pull that one out ill pm you with it, since not thread relavent. Btw ads in Angry Birds are embedded in software, so adfree wont work for some reason. Check adfree's review in market and they tell you why.
Has anyone used the compress option when making a back up? It is there, but I wonder what it will do? Does it function properly? I seem to remember reading something about compressing ad back up and it get corrupted or something like that but I can't remember when or where I read it.
What functionality does the Compress back up do (and please do say something like "it makes it smaller")? Does it work?

de-crapify the doubleshot!

I have rooted my phone, MT4GS, and discovered the /system/app with all the things that are installed and some that are not installed on the phone. These include all the CRAP that I will never use. (teleNAV, friend feed, Zino reader, etc.) I have copied off the contents VIA SD and removed about 33MB if files. Most were pretty obvious. I will include a list. I have made the assumption that if I remove select apps and reset (to factory) my phone, the removed apps will not be installed thus de-crapifying my phone. I would like to know from those more knowledgeable on Android that myself if I am correct. Here is a list of files I have selected for removal. As far as I can tell there is nothing too important, just all the apps I don't use and don't want.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where is that file? I did a search and didn't find anything....
There was also an excellent write-up done in the apps section. It's no longer updated and is kind of buried on page 3 but it's still a great place to start.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1222672
Thanks for the help. I used the bloater apk from the thread. The only thing it would not let me uninstall was Netflix. It's funny also that the MP3 and video trim programs don't show up to be installed, the mysketch, and a few other apk files that are in the app folder.
I will be taking over bloater within the next few days.
Expect it to be updated to include a lot more.
I depreciated the thread siani_8 linked to because of the sticky I have in the developers section.
The sticky hasn't been updated in a while because:
1 - what's there is solid, and useful.
2 - no one else has posted app descriptions.
If other people are willing to post descriptions of what the apps actually do in the thread, i'll update that into the actual reference posts.
I figure that i've set the stage for the rest of the info to be put in, and i've done that much so far. If the community is interested in having descriptions posted, then the community at large will provide them.
The app reference is what inspired Romanbb to write that awesome Bloater app, and what we've all learned since then means more to be added. Bloater is very high on my project list, and it will be included in the new version of Bulletproof just like the last.
Also, that thread that got depreciated is from way back when - right after we first got S-OFF and were able to start deleting useless garbage we were all sick of being stuck with.
Definitely read through it if you are working on this from the ground up, because you'll see how we started to learn what we know today. It's a great exercise, and you'll learn a lot about your phone approaching it by playing along instead of just skipping to the end result.
Any questions feel free to ask, we're all here to help.
I need to add your thread in the compendium too. Its a good write up blue, I can't believe I missed it.

I still can't find anything on this pdimg59.zip. Can anyone shed some light on it?
I think what you're referring to is the Stock ROM.
Easy answer:
Think of it like a failsafe for your device. If there is a file by that name on the sdcard, the phone will try to flash it on boot.
It's a more in depth answer then that from a technical perspective, but for just a quick "what is this?" that'll suffice. Someone with more time on their hands will probably come through here to expand on that if you're still curious.
To really decrapify your phone, just delete Rosie and HTCSense from /system/app. Just install another launcher app first.

GB to ICS - What I lost in the Fire

I've had ICS installed on Desire S for the past week. I'm a bit disappointed at some features being missing. I was using standard GB with Sense 3.0 - nothing special.
Well here's my list of troubles - maybe someone can help me with them, or at least they'll be out there for the benefit of anyone taking the dive.
Browser no longer opens default app: Whenever I've installed a special purpose application (Wikipedia, IMDb, Google Play) and I search on the browser, I no longer get the option to open the page in its dedicated app - instead the page loads and I end up using the browser. Most of you might remember the browser on GB used to ask the standard which-app-would-you-like-to-use question, and whether you'd like it defaulted or just once, but it no longer does that.
The mail widget doesn't show the same as the app - I've got Mail configured to sync with Exchange on 6 folders. The widget has stopped showing the different folders - the app still shows them when I select "All Messages" and this was the default view on GB. I've looked for settings near and far, but can't find any to control this.
HTC Sense no longer has widgets to download: I miss the hourglass timer (countdown) and the battery widget.
Youtube widget now occupies 3x2 instead of the sleaker 4x1. Is it YouTube or Sense, I don't know - but I'm not completely satisfied by this change.
To be fair to ICS tho, I believe it's quicker and lighter on the battery - I haven't felt the common complaints of slower. Also, a browser issue that some people had complained about is non-existent in my case - Good for me!
dont know about the mail question ,, but for browser , clear data and clear defualts in setting>apps>browser,,,
htc-sense : yes it is a little wierd but unfortunately , u cant download more htc widgets on sense 3.6 ,
youtube : since i moved to ICS youtube widget is shown like this , on any ics rom,,, so its youtube, not sense
As far as I remember you can set default apps for actions somwhere in the settings. But the truth is that ICS from HTC is really annoying and battery life was worse for me than on GB.

Are you rooted ? Try this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1865756&highlight=build+prop
Before i had problems with crashing links and apps weren't opening correctly.
Now for example i click youtube video in facebook app, it opens browser loads that address and asks what app to use. Checked youtube and don't ask in future.
Now works correct ;]

The one you're talking about is in Settings > Apps association.. but that doesn't include the apps I'm installing.
Apparently the response below from remusator is the right way to go... At least it sounds right to me. I'll try it and report back.
To Root? Or not to Root? That is the question.

Its sounds very likely that this is the right solution to follow... However, I'm not rooted. Would you recommend for or against (well, I think since you're rooted you probably will recommend it) but what are potential losses from rooting. I was against early in my warranty and OTA was still an option, but I'm not sure I have a case any more. Shall I just go ahead and root?

root it now !! no risk , it is very, very easy ,, u can get rid of the stock buggy ics , and can have latest android 4.1 jellybean ! ,Sense 4 ! ur phone will be very fast and lighting , can play any HD game bceause u can overclock your cpu ! ,,, but you may lost ur warranty :silly:
You will loose your warranty, however there are methods how to put the phone in original (afaik).
Anyway, most of Desire S phones are probably out of warranty already.
Rooting doesn't exactly mean installing custom roms, btw...
But it comes hand in hand, and it means freedom. You can make whatever you like with your phone.
Rooting on gingerbread was pretty easy and straightforward.
You root only once and install custom recovery. Then you can flash every rom you like (Desire S Development section), even prerooted, so no need to root again ;]
I've started my investigation on rooting, but I'm wondering about S-on/off are those needed also. Would those be enough to modify the build.prop file? What about upgrading bootloader.
Apparently I have too many questions so if you can redirect me to a guide about all those... The 101 of everything root/bootloader etc. Is appreciate it.

You can also find a complete guide thread here. Read as much as you can before you're confident about rooting. If you follow instructions carefully and read the tips to avoid bricking your device then there is very little risk to rooting.

[DISCONTINUED] Turboid 1.13

Now that we've got some Sunshine in our lives, sadly (not really) it is time for Turboid to be retired. We don't need it anymore.
If you would like to set up a rom on your unlocked Turbo that has all the features that Turboid had, upgrade to SU4TL-44, unlock with Sunshine, install TWRP, and flash following:
1. SuperSU: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/
2. Busybox: http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...-busybox-v1-23-2-stericson-flashable-t3114476 (NOTE: This is not the latest version, but you need to have busybox flashed before you flash Pon-3. Once you boot the phone, use Busybox Installer by Stericson in the Play Store to update to the latest version).
3. Pon-3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530976
4. Xposed Framework: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811 (Make sure to flash the correct SDK for the rom that you're running. SDK21 = Lollipop 5.0.X. SDK22 = Lollipop 5.1.X. SDK23 = Marshmallow 6.X. Also, always use the ARM version.)
5. iOS 9.1 emojis: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/themes-apps/mod-ios-emojis-android-t3231571
Once all that's flashed, let the phone boot up. Wiping cache and dalvik cache is always a safe bet after flashing anything. Once it boots, do the following:
1. Go back to the Xposed page and install the Installer apk.
2. Get Adaway here: https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway (Install using the default settings. No need for redirecting the hosts file anymore.)
3. Better Battery Stats is here if you like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
4. The Turbo 2 command center is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/themes-apps/droid-turbo-2-command-center-root-t3244386
I think that about covers it. Go forth and flash! Thanks for letting me play dev for a few months.
Thanks to:
@computerfreek274 for his excellent roms, his dedication to them and for our SELinux discussion
@JulesJam for her various guides and posts that taught me how to do most of this
@btdownloads7 for answering my question about the HDR bug
@DespairFactor for the iOS 9.1 emoji port
@mrchezco1995 for showing myself and the world how awesome ponies can sound via Pon-3
And at long last, thanks to @jcase and @beaups for kicking Motorola and Verizon in their bootloader-locked balls!
Awesome man. Nice to have some options, even if they are fairly similar. Thanks. :good:

No prob! If you can think of anything else that you would like me to add to it, let me know.

Unlike the other images floating around, I started off with the stock SU3TL-39 system image from the full Verizon firmware. To the best of my knowledge, the other roms are based off of firstEncounter's 5.1 image, which was obtained in a different way. Does this matter? Probably not, but at the time I thought that this might fix the HDR bug, and it did, but probably not for that reason.

There's a SU3TL-39 full firmware? My images were based on the SU3TL-38 and updated to SU3TL-39 by emulating the OTA script.
(Also, HDR works on my images, for whatever it's worth)
Regardless, always glad to see more development for the Turbo!

Yep! You can get it on the motofirmwares website. Yeah, someone confirmed for me the other day that it works on your image now. In the past, I had flashed it and it didn't, but you've updated it since I did that. So I guess HDR working isn't really a feature anymore. I'm working on some gimmicks to make my image a little more relevant though.
Would it be possible for you to allow us to claim space to the area where the Google Search Bar is, when it is hidden? Also, I would like to be able to clear all the open applications without having to swipe them all one at a time. Is that possible?

I'll look into the Google search bar thing. I've never seen my screen without it, so I didn't know that the space wasn't automatically used. As for the clear all recents thing, that is one of the many features of Gravity Box for LP (a well known xposed module). Try that. I'll see if there's a way to bake it into the rom too.
I posted on the other thread about this, but I will say again here, this img is great. Has similar battery life to the other Lp img I was running, despite not having tweaks. I unplugged at 530 am. been kicking butt all day long. I streamed via Bluetooth for 2 hours driving at work, and noticed better 4g signals than I have had yet at my work using this img. There were zero glitches or bugs that I noticed. I am still at 8% battery, atm. I had a crapload of SOT. Look for yourself. amazing img. thank you!!!
p.s. I just noticed I have had max brightness all day as well. lol.
I just realized you removed the corporate email app (after a day or use, haha). Is there a way that I can side load it or something? I love the debloated ROM, but that is one app I need for my college email account.
Also, is it ok to update Moto Actions? You can understand why I ask that!
^^^ I used the Outlook app as a replacement today. Gmail also will allow you to add other email accounts now, so that may be why. As far as requests, my only one may not be reasonable or practical, but it would be a deodexed version of this. Again, awesome work.
Yeah, specifically, I need the exchange piece. I tried the outlook app, but it doesn't handle certain things as well. I also tried installing Google Email 6.5 as well as the Exchange Services apk, but I know I have to be missing something... Actually, probably lots of things! haha.
Also, adaway doesn't work with this build, is that right?

Well if you need the stock email app, I can send an image your way that has it once I find some time. I have no idea what deodexing roms entails, but that sounds like a fun project too. I'll look into it.

Haha yes, updating seems to not cause the apocalypse to occur this time around. I'll make an image that has the stock email app intact, or I'll try sideloading it and post the apk if it works.

I added the stock email app back. Side loading didn't work. Will be up in a few hours.
thats cool. honestly, deodexing is removing all of the .odex files from the rom. (located at /system/app , system/priv-app, etc.
the reason i ask about it is it would make theming easier. mind you, without system r/w access, it is a moot point. it may make the theme options available work better though. (LPthemer module comes to mind). CF has said he will not be doing that at any point, so it may be a PITA.

1.02 looks like the perfect ROM for me! Thanks @TheSt33v
