I have rooted my phone, MT4GS, and discovered the /system/app with all the things that are installed and some that are not installed on the phone. These include all the CRAP that I will never use. (teleNAV, friend feed, Zino reader, etc.) I have copied off the contents VIA SD and removed about 33MB if files. Most were pretty obvious. I will include a list. I have made the assumption that if I remove select apps and reset (to factory) my phone, the removed apps will not be installed thus de-crapifying my phone. I would like to know from those more knowledgeable on Android that myself if I am correct. Here is a list of files I have selected for removal. As far as I can tell there is nothing too important, just all the apps I don't use and don't want.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where is that file? I did a search and didn't find anything....
There was also an excellent write-up done in the apps section. It's no longer updated and is kind of buried on page 3 but it's still a great place to start.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1222672
Thanks for the help. I used the bloater apk from the thread. The only thing it would not let me uninstall was Netflix. It's funny also that the MP3 and video trim programs don't show up to be installed, the mysketch, and a few other apk files that are in the app folder.
I will be taking over bloater within the next few days.
Expect it to be updated to include a lot more.
I depreciated the thread siani_8 linked to because of the sticky I have in the developers section.
The sticky hasn't been updated in a while because:
1 - what's there is solid, and useful.
2 - no one else has posted app descriptions.
If other people are willing to post descriptions of what the apps actually do in the thread, i'll update that into the actual reference posts.
I figure that i've set the stage for the rest of the info to be put in, and i've done that much so far. If the community is interested in having descriptions posted, then the community at large will provide them.
The app reference is what inspired Romanbb to write that awesome Bloater app, and what we've all learned since then means more to be added. Bloater is very high on my project list, and it will be included in the new version of Bulletproof just like the last.
Also, that thread that got depreciated is from way back when - right after we first got S-OFF and were able to start deleting useless garbage we were all sick of being stuck with.
Definitely read through it if you are working on this from the ground up, because you'll see how we started to learn what we know today. It's a great exercise, and you'll learn a lot about your phone approaching it by playing along instead of just skipping to the end result.
Any questions feel free to ask, we're all here to help.
I need to add your thread in the compendium too. Its a good write up blue, I can't believe I missed it.

I still can't find anything on this pdimg59.zip. Can anyone shed some light on it?
I think what you're referring to is the Stock ROM.
Easy answer:
Think of it like a failsafe for your device. If there is a file by that name on the sdcard, the phone will try to flash it on boot.
It's a more in depth answer then that from a technical perspective, but for just a quick "what is this?" that'll suffice. Someone with more time on their hands will probably come through here to expand on that if you're still curious.
To really decrapify your phone, just delete Rosie and HTCSense from /system/app. Just install another launcher app first.

I know its still kinda soon and all but do you think that there will be something along the lines of this quick install for the pre for the evo soon?? I used to have it for my pre and I liked it a lot. I just think its an easier way to out themes and tweaks on your phone. Lets get some devs on this
AS far as I know, It does not exist, but it would be awesome.
I mean, I understand the ROM approach, and all is good, but is a little bit too much.... For instance, right now I have OMJ's rom that gives me anything I need, but, let's say, I want to add something.. like to edit the hosts file to avoid ads, I only have 2 options, either load another rom (and again wipe everything, restore from a backup, and manually tweak the data that was not backed up, like some edits inside contacts, quick dial, etc), or manually tweak the hosts file, but there is no software to help automate any tweaks like Quick Install.... (or patches or anything like that)

This is why we should make this a sticky and get people to make this happen. It would be so convenient and easy for the people that dont know what to do when it comes to the ROMs.
agreeeed! quickinstall and preware...aww man bring back the memories....
Can someone explain to me what this quick install thing is? Maybe I or one of my co devs can help make it happen
im quoting from the pre wiki:
Preware is a package management application for the Palm Pre and the Palm Pixi. Preware allows the user to install any package from any of the open standard package repositories on preware.org (or any other location that hosts an open standard package repository). Preware relies on a custom written service developed from community research which allows the mojo app to talk to the built-in ipkg tool.
This application was the result of extensive community-based design in IPKG Service and Preware Design.
For application management, Preware can access more applications, and has more features, than any other on-device package installer.
And since it is open source, and has a completely open development process supported by a team of world-class WebOS Internals developers, it will continue to get better much faster than any other package management application.
Preware is the open application installer that has been written specifically to support a homebrew ecosystem where any developer can upload any application to any submission site, and that application can then be installed by any user. Developers no longer need to upload their applications to multiple submission sites, and users are no longer excluded from accessing applications from any open standard package repository.
quickinstall is essentially the same thing but all actions done via your computer
the homebrew community for the pre was INCREDIBLE, im hoping with the growing number of users here that hopefully it will be just a good here!
Well first, the dev community here is much better. Trust me. It takes a little to get off our feet because WebOS and Android are completely different and HTC tries to block us at every move. The Evo community is moving faster than any other XDA Android community has. Don't doubt our devs
I knew what Preware was. I didn't realize quick install was the same thing. Ok so basically you want a repository consisting of what? Roms?
roms, patches, tweaks, themes, hell even some apps on the low low haha
haha i still have my pre and follow the updates on preware using wifi.
i think if devs use rom manager that would be great...and i am sure all devs will get on that soon enough
haha yea i have noticed work on the EVO moved alot faster than any of the other android phones...
thanks for your responses chuck, ill be getting more involved here and always let me know if there is anything i can do to help.

why is that? i only ask because with the pre, palm was a really big supporter of the dev community...it just seems counter productive for htc to try and block users efforts to make the phones even more desirable and customizable...i know thats what drew so many people to the pre...also one of the reasons i loved it
Are you referring to something like metamorph maybe used it on my hero a lot
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
ahh yea i guess in a way rom manager and meta pretty much do what preware does
i guess maybe we were trying to see if it could all be consolidated to one place [make it evo specific] and have a few more features and options??
for example: there is not flash for the camcorder...perhaps a patch to change that? or like when the light senor detects a face the phone is in earpiece, when you move your face away it automatically goes to speakerphone [i use these two examples because they are somewhat recent developments on the pre] but now that I have an idea of what kinda tweaks are possible i think we could probably move really quickly
havent played with metamorph yet but i will def check it out tonight]
EDIT #1: upon future researching metamorph it seems even more like preware than i thought, BUT the OP was talking about quickinstall...i am cool with either haha thanks for the replies
EDIT #2: i just tried to install and i guess its not ready for us yet...ill be patiently waiting i guess hah
I'm pretty much new on these forums, but I have been following the unrevoked root and working with the guys in the forums with this and that now that the phone is rooted. So I figured I would jump on here and share some of the work we have put together.... I present to you, our list of stock apks that have been tested our (removed and swapped) for the htc incredible:
bluraynetworks.com/android/
If you feel like we have missed any that you want tested, give me a shout and I'll arrange for it to be done. Thanks for the look, and happy modding,
::EDIT:: I apologize for the link not being a url, as i am a new member and aren't allowed yet,

after removing all these apps do you see any preformance increases or any extra battery life?
personally on this last run of removals it seemed like after i pulled stock and footprints i got tons of battery life out of my phone. I'm dropping about 2 - 3% per hour doing like work (couple minute phone call, handful of txt messaging, and syncs for gmail and my pop account)
I think it might be wise for people who want to do this to Move the apps to a safe location rather than actually deleting them.
This would make it easier to put them back if you run into some issues.
Otherwise you will need to resort to the RUU and start all over.
Updated instructions with mv commands for saftey, thanks for the suggestion.
SOME of this looks all to familiar...
That is quite possibly true, some of these have been lingering around here on the forums, and it was itching at me to consolidate them all into one place and get them tested amongst multiple people. Thanks for your contributions to the list btw,
Probably the wrong thread but would it be possible to get the vanilla android weather app?
how about removal of the HTC Music app? I am a much bigger fan of the stock Android and would like HTC music to go away. any idea of what that APK is called? HtcMusic.apk ?
Alright, it seems that a lot of people have started trying out all of the themes that are popping up here. And why not eh there's a lot of great looking themes flying around (once I've finished constantly messing up my phone with dodgy modifications I might even settle on one myself )
Problem as I see it is, the same questions are getting asked over and over again. And the same solutions are being presented. I know there's the 'How To' sticky for using chewitts installer, but the installation issues are getting posted everywhere: all through each theme thread, in the sticky and even in new threads (I have to admit, I've only seen one, but I don't really want to see a trend starting).
My suggestion is to make this the one-stop shop for all installation and restoration issues. I'll use the next few posts for the different kinds of issues (phone won't boot, market doesn't work etc) and their known solutions.
As the thread progresses with new issues I'll update.
Please note: I do not want to do this on my own
I will need (and I expect) the help of all of you out there that are creating these things that mess up our phones But, seriously, it would be nice if you guys subscribe and help out when you have the time.
This is really just an effort to clean up the forum here a bit, and make life easier for people trying to get information out of the theme threads, and, last but not least, to help the themers (is that a word??) avoid posting the same answers to the same questions over and over again.
I will look at the poll again after the weekend. If the aye's have it, then I will ask for it to be stickied and fill in some gaps. If not then this thread will self-destruct... well... you know... I'll ask a mod to delete it...

First of all, great idea
As for me the problems i mostly met was:
- Market issue not installing Apk's after applying themes, to solve it you have to clear cache and uninstall updates from the "manage applications" menu.
- The other issue was the phone not booting and stuck on SE logo, and had to do a reflash, i remember seeing somewhere that you can flash only on file using flash tools and it will make your phone boot and keep your data but i actually don't remember where i read it
- Other issues at start of my theme"ing" life was chmod, installing adb and setting environment in windows settings but thats easy now - at least for me -
i will try to add more later

Market issue - uninstall market update. Not related to theming.
Phone boot problems - improper installation of framework-res.apk.
chmod - if you have the improper permisions (shell root) you wont be able to push framework-res.apk to your phone, that's why they have you check your permissions. If they aren't proper the installer tells you how to remedy that.
Protip: backup your apk's after you've flashed your phone the last time and set them all up. In theory all your setting should be saved as well. The backup and restore program should be useful as well if you have to reflash.
***I voted no for us needing this thread because all the theme installation questions are easily answered in the theme's thread itself if the person properly reads the post. Also, if people are having doubts they shouldn't be theming their phones without properly figuring out what they have to do, let alone rooting it.***

Theoreticaly you're absolutely right, that's why it took until now to open this thread. Practically, however, things look a bit different... I think another two or three threads popped up yesterday... And how many times have you read about "the market issue" on one (or all) of the theme threads?

Absolutely correct. The Market has been having issues since 1.6, and it's not just on the X10 either. Do we need the thread, not really, as most themes popping up use Chewitts installer and there is a sticky for that already or the issue has already been addressed in the themes thread.
However, you could change the thread to a common X10 issues thread which could be moved to general or rewrite THIS thread as you seem to be covering issues that are more general than theme related anyway.
yeah, fair enough. I just saw all the issues coming up in all the theme threads and how you guys were having to repeat yourselves again and again. I don't really want to get into any other issues other than theme related stuff.
Like I said, I agree that the market issue has nothing do do with themes, but just count up the number of users that posted in the res mods thread because of it.
Anyway, as I was primarily going to put this together to make yours and chewitts life easier (as you two bare the brunt of this), I'll ask the mods to delete it.
I might just write a little bit on recovery and send it to zm4.

Hint taken I'm back on the case right now
Thread closed as per OP's request.
I am currently compiling a list of anything that can be safely removed w/o creating an unstable environment.
Any help is appreciated, any programs that you may know that are safe to remove or any that have caused your sys to crash, please share.
-AppPack4.0.88
-EA Games 1.0.16
-Nova 3.1.1
-Polaris Office
-SmartShare 1.0
-TegraZone
-Telenav GPS 6.2.6201050
-WiFi calling [when removed, caused a FC loop for said program. I forced a reboot and everything is good now.]
I've taken off the safest and what I felt were no question asked safe... My experiment comes in to the unknown, like the GooglePartners one or the android.providers.applications and the like. If you have any info about these unknowns or maybe know of a place where I can get get descriptions of said files, I would gratefully accept it. My biggest fear are any issues it may cause that aren't apparent, but at the same time, I want to strip this down and get any unnecessary crap off, especially if it could be what's causing the system to not allow me to access the web w/my current data plan...
Also, if you see something on the list posted as safe or unsafe, but you had a different experience, please share. By cross referencing, I think we can get a more accurate list here right off the bat.
Car Home, TeleNav, Wifi Calling are the only ones I deleted so far.

Sorry for maybe a dumb question, but I'm very new to Android....How exactly DO you delete apps? I'm used to Windows Mobile where you can delete stuff pretty easily.
Along the same lines, is there any way to get a file explorer type program on Android? so annoying not to be able to move stuff around easily.

Root your phone and download Titanium Backup. Besides backing up apps, it has a plethora of other options it can do. Removing apps is one of them.
I believe I've already covered this in one of my earlier threads from about a week ago. I listed the actual APK file name and its common name.
I had like 11-12 deleted.

Yeah, a link would be nice because I know I didn't find it w/a search prior to posting this thread. I'm all about keeping forums clear of excess clutter, so link us up.
As far as I know, the names on my list were exactly as they showed on TB including the build. Mine may not be as complete, but it included what the the required info which, for the most part, was the same as the "common name" as you put it. Sorry, but that one sentence just seemed a little pretentious to me.
By the way, did you get adventurous w/ your deletions or is the basic TMo and the like? I was looking to start trimming some more dangerous fat from my phone, just waiting for a time when I'm not going to be rushed, I expect to have to do a few restores.
**found the post, the list is only the *.apk's, but for the most part, again, you can tell what is what, so even if you're not using RE or a similar program, you should still be able to figure it out w/o issue. It's a great post for someone new to the Android platform, more of a bulk, little bit of everything post. Hit it up.

I think of it this way. Just about everything that is in the app drawer that is not an actual system app is safe to remove long as you of course use common sense. Obviously you won't delete the browser market phone camera settings etc. Half of the stuff in system/app is straight forward. Google frame work and calendar etc is obviously not good to delete. But the stuff like cmwallpapers is extra bloat you nay never use. Most of it is common sense. I learned the hard waybthay some apps are not to be touched and that's what a nandroid backup is for.

File Manager: ES File Explorer
I believe I've found a bug or at least rather unusual behavior for Bloater, specifically when using it to uninstall Friendstream or Peep. When Bloater is used on either of these apps, it has the undesired side-effect of disabling the HTC Setting Widgets, in that the multiple widgets displayed under this option no longer show--a black screen appears when one selects the "Settings ..." widget option. Checking via ES File Explorer, htcsettingwidgets.apk and htcsettingwidgets.odex are present under /system/app, as is the folder com.htc.htcsettingwidgets under /data/data (although the lib subfolder is empty, but I think that's the way it's supposed to be). Any reinstallation attempt using the .apk fails.
If I uninstall any of the above apps manually, the HTC Setting Widgets are unaffected, so Bloater must be executing some other commands that obviously don't keep this particular widget set happy.
Tested using a Nandroid backup made just after I updated from the MoDaCo CWM to the official CWM 5.0.2.7, restoring after using Bloater on each of the above listed apps.
Has anyone else using Bloater observed the same behavior? Not earth-shattering, I know, but something is definitely happening under the hood with the app to cause what I've documented here. Curious to find out if it can be reproduced on other MT4GS phones.
PS: Bloater tends to leave quite a few files behind after uninstalling a given app (SD Maid checking for "corpses" afterward).
TIA for any replies or feedback; mostly curious as it's not mission critical, given that manual uninstall works as expected --

What exactly does bloater do? I use titanium to remove or freeze system apps, what's the difference?
Bloater is a bloatware removal app specifically for rooted/s-off MT4GS phones developed by Romanbb and Blue6IX. Here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258834
Titanium is one method of dealing with bloat, Bloater is another. The app caught my interest since it was specifically for the MT4GS, and I'd like to help polish it with my meager skills.
@Blue - no worries, dude, I know you're herding a bunch of cats right now. Just shining some light on possible bugs so they can be properly squashed.

Thanks man - get to it as soon as I can. Meantime any theory or discussion cuts down on the time to resolution when I do get to this.
Thanks!
KingCheetah, I also noticed this bug with Bloater. Very similar situation (S-OFF, stock, BusyBox 1.19.3, CWM 5.0.2.7)
One way I have found to get the settings widget to function correctly again is to clear the HTC Sense data. From doing some searching, I found a thread in the Incredible forum with a similar problem (Apparently, too noob to post link?).
Pertinent takeaway:
- manage applications
- HTC Sense (click it)
- Click on "clear data"
- reboot your phone
This unfortunately means you'll have to reconfigure your homescreens but all other info (accounts, settings, applications, etc) are saved so nbd to drag a few icons around.
Anyway, I know this isn't an amazing fix for something that isn't an earth-shattering problem but it is my first post on XDA! Now to figure out how I managed to mess up the calender widget and if that was also Bloater related...
This may be related to another missing widget situation as noted in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1478341. Linked by Blue in #2.
While an interesting workaround, it's a little scorched earth for me, nuking the homescreen set-up like that. Manual uninstall of the targeted bloat seems to be a more elegant solution, though more reading/learning intensive.
Welcome to the forums and the process of denoobifying
