I have an unlocked T-Mobile HTC 8X, but ‘Internet connection sharing’ is still locked by T-Mobile. Wondering if anyone has been successful in by passing that registry to make it work?
Would appreciate any pointers or assistance.
Thank you in advance!!

I added hotspot support to my rate plan. This is the only legal way to enable this, and possibly the only way period at the moment. T-Mobile has ways of knowing you're using it without paying for it. I know because on my HTC HD7, Internet Sharing just worked, and when I used it without having hotspot service on my account, I got messages from T-Mobile telling me that it would be added to my account automatically if I keeped using it.
I also have a T-Mobile 8X unlocked.. but not using it in the US market..
Internet Sharing works fine.. I didn't have to make any changes.
I have an att unlocked but the internet sharing is locked! im in peru... and I used to use internet sharing with a Samsung focus... any way to unlock it?
I have a Verizon 8X...and I would also love to know how to unlock this feature....Unlimited plan that I have would be nice to use with my tablet....
well.. i spoke too soon!
The last update from HTC or Windows.. screwed my internet sharing!
says to go to tmobile site to gain access to the function.. WAAASTE!!
I find this immensly frustrating.
I do not think it is even remotely illegal to use the data connection you pay for, especially if it is an "unlimited" connection, in whatever way you see fit. Transfer any data whatsover. It is not fair for them to decide which data can and can't be used, or to charge more for certain types of connections. If one tethers their laptop to the phone, the phone is still transmitting data using its connection and it is no business of theirs what that data is. They have no business regulating the function of the device that I own either.
With my HD7 I had fully unlocked it and was running a custom ROM. I had unregulated tethering and did not sign up for a tethering plan. I know T-mobile did not want me to do this, but I am confident it is perfectly legal.
It frustrates me to no end that I can't do this with my 8X, and I'm going to fully unlock it as soon as I possibly can.
So much for T-mobile's new "unlimited", "no-contract", "un-carrier" policies. Charging for tethering is as much BS as AT&T blocking Facetime.

100000000% agree with you on this. I have HD7 and it worked just fine before unlocking and custom ROM and all that and I have $5 data plan.
None of the new WP8 I can get this to work w/o blocking messages asking for upgrade or adding hostspot feature. Just a way they squeeze some $$$ out of you even thought you just use this internet sharing once a while...

so i got a pre-paid sim in brasil with CLARO, signed up for their "unlimited web" option, which is actually limited to 300MB over 30 days, and soon enough I could use the android web browser freely. Strangely enough android market, gmaps, gmail, etc wouldn't recieve any data. The E icon for edge only lit the up arrow, the down arrow never would light unless i was using the android web browser...
I cannot understand how my nexus s can freely brows the web, but no other app can get data. I took my sim and put it in another phone, a nokia, and it worked fine with its map application, and facebook... I took the sim from that nokia phone, and i had the same data issues.
mind you, the phone worked fine on Tmobile USA , and works fine here on WiFi...
I talked to Claro, but they were as surprised and clueless as I was. They suggested a few things including creating a new google account here in brasil, it didn't help.
I got sick of trying to figure it out and just bought a pre-paid sim/plan from another provider (TIM) and it worked like a charm... everything worked.
But does anyone understand this situation?
I'm aware my nexus S doesn't have the 3g bands for claro, but it was on Edge, and regardless of bands, the web browser had a good data connection.
most probably , your network had some ports( being used by google apps) blocked. and the one for the browser ( a different one -8080 i suppose) was still opened.
but the same sim on another phone, everything worked. and Claro sells galaxy s phones, and other android devices... I didn't test it with them, but they would have seen this issue before if the ports were blocked, right?
I have a Nexus One and my wife has the Nexus S. We also use Tim prepaid but don't have any data plan. The cell service is so bad in Rio I am not sure if we would be throwing money away with a data plan. How has it been for you? Wifi is available in the malls and a lot of restaurants as well as all along Copacabana Beach. So far we're making due.
probably the default APN for that provider needs a proxy server and provides no direct internet connection. In android only the browser uses the proxy address that you set up in the settings, for everything else it must be direct connection.
Nokia phones usually use the configured proxy for everything, so it works. That, or it was using another APN. In spain, for example, orange and most providers have 2 apns for internet, one gives you a public IP and full internet connection, the other needs a proxy, you get a private IP address and nothing works. Both are usually included in the same data plans, so you have to use the right one with Android.
by the way, an "APN" is the what the phone "dials" to get an internet connection, more or less. So depending on the APN you can get different kinds of service.
Good to know cus Im thinking in changing my operator to Claro. Now Im on Tim with no data plan...
As soon you solve this , or not, tell us please!!
e se quiserem trocar figurinhas sobre o Nexus S, vamos trocar emails!!!
Claro MG
Hi Folks,
I have a Nexus S and also a Data Plan from Claro.
Since I live in Minas Gerais ( Claro 3G here is 2100MHz ) it´s working fine.
Yesterday I went to São Paulo on a Business Trip and ( Claro 3G in SP is 850MHz ) my EDGE connection just worked fine.
I could send e-mails and even navigate a bit with Google Navigator.
It might help you an app called APN Brasil found on market. All my apn settings are based from this app.
So far so good.

I've had good experience with TIM in south zone, I get 3G just about anywhere outside of a building. It's not fast by USA standards, but its decent.. definately worth R$0.50 per day.
So anyone understand what this article is talking about?
http://www.softwaredownloadsguide.com/2011/02/htc-inspire-4g-htc-inspire-4g-on-att-release-date/
Here is the part I am curious about:
AT&T will charge monthly data plans for the HTC Inspire 4G will price $15 for 200MB of data and $25 per month for 2GB data plan. Data can be use through Hotspot capacity from Datapro Tethering plan for the user data allowance. HTC Inspire 4G will be available on AT&T stores and online from 13th February at price $99.99 with two years contract.

So does this mean that people with unlimited plans at $30 a month should be ok to tether their laptops via wifi?
No, you need a data pro plan with tethering. $45 for 4gb of data.
so i wonder if there will be a way around that cause i currently have a unlimited data plan and really don't want to pay for the tethering plan (have been using WMWifirouter for WM 6.5). Any ideas to help me out being a cheepskate!?

PDA.Net is an option since you have an unlimited plan.
once we get root (assuming we do) are there other tethering options (you will have to pardon me as i am still new to android). When i did searches there is some material on the subject but from what i understand the phone has to be rooted for these to work.

Yes once you root your phone you will have other options to choose from such as Android Wifi tether.
thanks.. now if the predictions continue at the same rate of what i continue to read the phone will be rooted before i ever get it home from the store
PDA.net is wired tethering, not a wifi hotspot
Ya I have the $30 unlimited data with AT&T. Using the HD2 Australian version (android OS) I am able to use the Wi-Fi Hotspot app, only problem is where I live they don't use 850 for 3G so I only have EDGE. I am really looking forward to what can be done with the Inspire, because having such an amazing phone kind of sucks with such slow data speeds.
This is something I am very interested in also. I am assuming the wifi tethering that ATT is talking about it the MobileAP that is already present on damn near every 2.2 rom. I heard that they are going to have a setting that will let ATT control whether your INSPIRE 4g will be able to use this feature. I am on the unlimited plan now with my craptivate and was just thinking about buying it off contract and dropping my sim in. does anyone think that this might be an issue?
My only worry is that ATT tries to screw you in almost every way possible if they think they can make more money off you. Technically we shouldn't have to pay for tethering IMHO we are already paying for the data why should it matter how or on what device we use it on??

I agree, although it seems like once they get it rooted we will be able to put our own tethering app on it and avoid having to pay for a ridiculous plan. I used WMWiFi Router on my incite and HTC's tethering on the windows mobile HD2 and now the WiFi Hotspot app on Android on the HD2 all on ATT with an unlimited data plan without tethering.
I need UMA or WiFi calling on my phone and it's no problem now, I have a My
Touch 4G on T-Mobile and all is well BUT (you knew there had to be a 'but' in there, didn't you?) when and if the AT&T buyout of T-Mobile goes through what will happen to UMA or WiFi calling?
Anyone know if AT&T plans to keep this indefinitely?
What about other carriers offering the service? I'm planning to back to VZW because my past AT&T experiences (over 40 years with all the various incarnations of the name!) have all been very unsatisfactory but, again, I NEED UMA or WiFi calling because one place I frequent has zero bars with VZW (T-Mo works just fine, go figure!)
OK, I know I'm just wishing, VZW, AT&T, Sprint are NOT going to offer UMA or WiFi calling and before someone hollers "SKYPE" or something similar it's not a satisfactory substitute.
I know there are other posts that ask that question but nothing recent. So...
Here is what I have:
Verizon - w/unlimited data
HTC Rezound - unlocked, rooted, ROM'd, NO S-off
The Portable Wi-Fi hotspot function of my phone is working flawlessly right now. That is very important. I would appreciate any suggestions for a new phone. It doesn't have to be something currently out. It could be something coming down the road.
There are three requirements:
I must be able to enable the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot, and (able to enable, funny)
Acquiring this phone must not affect my unlimited data plan at Verizon, and
It must an Android phone
If anyone has recommendations concerning upgrading your phone at Verizon without jeopardizing an unlimited plan please add that as well.
Thank you in advance for reading my request.

i dont think verizon does unlimited plans anymore. but if your fine with rooting a phone that your going to use for phone purposes you can wifi tether for free i think any phone would be fine for you, gonna be maybe a little more specific on what you want. i mean like screen size, battery life, Cpu.

I have an unlimited data plan. I am grandfathered in to it. Believe me, they would love to get that from me (and everyone else that has one). It's a matter of being very careful about what changes are made to your plan or phone as they are always looking for a way to screw ya out of it.
So, the requirements I mentioned above are still good. I need a new phone that I can root and enable the native Portable Wi-Fi hotspot so as to utilize my unlimited data plan. And, beyond that, if you or anyone else has any inside information, a new phone that wont require me to change my plan or otherwise jeopardize my current plan with unlimited data.
As for budget, it doesn't really matter. I can get what I need to get.
Thanks for the post...

hmmm you might have to do a bunch of research into it then.
I just was in a similar situation...I went with an HTC one from Tmobile even though Im on ATT...covers mostly all the networks (I travel internationally a fair amount), once you unlock it and is easy to root. No complaints so far
Hi everyone. I have an issue with my unlocked AT&T HTC One X. It's unlocked in the sense that I am using a T-Mobile plan and SIM. I found out recently that the bootloader was not unlocked and it was not rooted so I rooted and unlocked the bootloader last night. The only thing I'm yet to do is S-off. The problem I'm having is that I can't tether even though I am getting data using an APN setting T-Mobile gave me. I rooted mainly to be able to tether the data plan so it's kind of frustrating. I was however able to use the clockworkmod tether and it works, however, that is a USB tether. I've tried several wireless tether apps that don't seem to work. Help will really be appreciated. Thanks.
This seems to be a popular topic lately (WiFi hotspot not working on stock AT&T ROM).
The bootloader is not the problem. The issue is that the stock AT&T ROM intentionally blocks the use of tethering and WiFi hotspot unless you pay for an AT&T tethering enabled plan. Of course, since you are not on AT&T, that isn't possible.
Since you are already bootloader unlocked, IMO the best solution is to install TWRP custom recovery (if you haven't already) and just install any stock rooted or custom ROM that is not AT&T based. Any stock or custom Sense ROM has the stock HTC WiFi hotspot fully functional.
As redpoint said just install TWRP and install a custom Sense ROM. You'll find detailed instructions in my How-To Guide For Beginners thread, link in my signature.

Arrrrrrrgh! Pirates we be!
Anyway, does anyone actually know anything concerning the legality of tethering without and "official" tethering plan? Is there really a law or do they just cling to their software blocks assuming most people aren't awesome like us?
Feels like I recall a "threatening" email from att regarding my excessive data usage
Sent from my One X using Tapatalk
I highly doubt there's a specific law as such, but it's within your contract with at&t and you're technically obliged to abide by the terms and conditions within the contract.
I personally think it's criminal of the north American carriers to do that, there's no way you'd catch an Australian carrier trying that.

I assume you are referring to AT&T blocking or allowing the use of tethering (the OP of this thread is not on AT&T).
There doesn't need to be a law for this, its not like AT&T will have you thrown in jail or sue you. But its their network, and they get to decide how its used. Read the terms of service you agreed to when you signed up for service, and you will see that it specifically addresses tethering, and that you need to have a tethering data plan in order to do so. Violate these terms, and AT&T has the right to add a tethering plan to your account, or terminate your account.
They can tell on the network end that you are tethering. Enforcement is not 100%, and nobody except probably AT&T themselves knows how they enforce. But its likely that if your tethering is high volume and frequent, you will be caught. The first violation they give a warning (forget if it comes by text, email, or snail mail). Second time you are caught, they will add a tethering plan to your account.
I tether very infrequently, but sometimes use it to just download/upload work email when I am travelling and working in a location that does not have internet connectivity. I've been doing this for years, and have never been caught. But my tethering usage is quite low. Also, their detection is likely not related to my non-tethering usage, as I've often used 3 to 4 GB a month non-tethering (on an unlimited data plan). So they are not looking exclusively for high usage, but rather a combination of behaviors.
Bottom line, stay off the radar and you can tether occasionally. Tether frequently and high volume, and you will get caught, its just a matter of time. And if you are a pirate, you know how to stay off the radar, right?

Lol no peer block won't work. They can just tell but it seems with the unlimited data plans gone tethering isn't to big an issue. A lot of plans come with it now and if you are using up data its a win win for them. What's jacked is some other carriers block you using your PC internet via USB to device. Its kinda crazy cause its really the same as WiFi lol.
