so i got a pre-paid sim in brasil with CLARO, signed up for their "unlimited web" option, which is actually limited to 300MB over 30 days, and soon enough I could use the android web browser freely. Strangely enough android market, gmaps, gmail, etc wouldn't recieve any data. The E icon for edge only lit the up arrow, the down arrow never would light unless i was using the android web browser...
I cannot understand how my nexus s can freely brows the web, but no other app can get data. I took my sim and put it in another phone, a nokia, and it worked fine with its map application, and facebook... I took the sim from that nokia phone, and i had the same data issues.
mind you, the phone worked fine on Tmobile USA , and works fine here on WiFi...
I talked to Claro, but they were as surprised and clueless as I was. They suggested a few things including creating a new google account here in brasil, it didn't help.
I got sick of trying to figure it out and just bought a pre-paid sim/plan from another provider (TIM) and it worked like a charm... everything worked.
But does anyone understand this situation?
I'm aware my nexus S doesn't have the 3g bands for claro, but it was on Edge, and regardless of bands, the web browser had a good data connection.
most probably , your network had some ports( being used by google apps) blocked. and the one for the browser ( a different one -8080 i suppose) was still opened.
but the same sim on another phone, everything worked. and Claro sells galaxy s phones, and other android devices... I didn't test it with them, but they would have seen this issue before if the ports were blocked, right?
I have a Nexus One and my wife has the Nexus S. We also use Tim prepaid but don't have any data plan. The cell service is so bad in Rio I am not sure if we would be throwing money away with a data plan. How has it been for you? Wifi is available in the malls and a lot of restaurants as well as all along Copacabana Beach. So far we're making due.
probably the default APN for that provider needs a proxy server and provides no direct internet connection. In android only the browser uses the proxy address that you set up in the settings, for everything else it must be direct connection.
Nokia phones usually use the configured proxy for everything, so it works. That, or it was using another APN. In spain, for example, orange and most providers have 2 apns for internet, one gives you a public IP and full internet connection, the other needs a proxy, you get a private IP address and nothing works. Both are usually included in the same data plans, so you have to use the right one with Android.
by the way, an "APN" is the what the phone "dials" to get an internet connection, more or less. So depending on the APN you can get different kinds of service.
Good to know cus Im thinking in changing my operator to Claro. Now Im on Tim with no data plan...
As soon you solve this , or not, tell us please!!
e se quiserem trocar figurinhas sobre o Nexus S, vamos trocar emails!!!
Claro MG
Hi Folks,
I have a Nexus S and also a Data Plan from Claro.
Since I live in Minas Gerais ( Claro 3G here is 2100MHz ) it´s working fine.
Yesterday I went to São Paulo on a Business Trip and ( Claro 3G in SP is 850MHz ) my EDGE connection just worked fine.
I could send e-mails and even navigate a bit with Google Navigator.
It might help you an app called APN Brasil found on market. All my apn settings are based from this app.
So far so good.

I've had good experience with TIM in south zone, I get 3G just about anywhere outside of a building. It's not fast by USA standards, but its decent.. definately worth R$0.50 per day.

Hi everyone
I just wanted to know if someone has tried a prepaid sim on the mda and used the internet through EDGE. For some reason i get free internet and I just have $10 on my account with no charge to it. post if you get the same result.
Update: Was told about this Free WAP on T-Mobile!
But they talk about having free wap but its actually free gprs so you can use PIE, Opera for ppc,
Win media and listen to streams or anything that can use gprs (edge)
and also you can use modem link or internet sharing for your PC
Update 2: This will only work for US T-Mobile because of the updating to 3G of the network. So it may work for a limited time. < Refining EDGE
Update 3: Can also work on contract sim cards but i advise to use at own risk tmobile my start to charge you and it can get expensive if you do not have a data plan. I have been told that sometimes this may not work But will work on prepaid sim cards
Update 4: this will work on any phone but you need to have a different web browser like opera mini. It may also stop working but will work again if you disconnect and connect again right then or in a different time.

Plug this today if you are complianing this is a capped plan now what ever you do it doesn't matter. the compute will bill for what you have
Move this to the front so i don't have to deal with the hype
fact free net never went down
means no man down if no mms was being used or dialed in.
Fact i still cant get out on some phones i am cingular so t-mobile takes a bit longer for me
Plane straight t-zones $5.99 no mms cabs t-zones
216.155.165.50:8080 done
Plan t-zones online only catch 22 must change phone to a non pda.
I am OK with this move for one reason. the minute you make a call the system will flip your phone status back to the beautiful stock photo of what ever you have
If you don't understand me well guess what i don't look up when i type i do look up when i sign paychecks so just ask your friend moderator and this goes right into th45 move chart. 7 years and still cant typo as fast as i think
My theory is this i still am having problems with outh the cabs like im handi cap so that mens that the mms plays a role when you dial it in dont ask some else figure it out because our cabs work but i always change to 8080
the same source and my coaching argues with me on this stupid subject.
everyone here that has a opinion should also take into consideration that mathematics and reason does not make the world go round in the us its money homes and cars we will leave that discussion for one of my 100 seminars i power train at.
But 3g is already their but cingular never owned or should i say lease the heavier sites up top they bought the newbie national package. So the reason t mobile is not as deep is because cingular most likely resigned a separate deal that would not be part of a locked contract. So t mobile has to buy it on thier own.
But 3g only works in certain areas like blocks but when t hooks up it shakes financially t-mobile will wait until the market moves an inch the hype is not 3g for the 97 percent of the world only the fans. You will see more picture and video before speed is a priority.
hence the reason 2000 laptops are a nickel now. i see a ten quad coming why some body shooting the titanic nope i guarantee you some asshole in chicago saw that the glutens meaning the us will be picture crazy and share your picture and make your family trip a movie so they are making gaming look like a intermediate sport
good news better for the individual that wants a nuke for hardware cause last time i checked Intel core duo 2 were not $599. wait a month the good stuff will just get cheaper.
T-mobile could give to ****s about anybody back dooring a connection. Half of the reason it limited is to cut down on support the sales guy has no affiliation with the web and has no idea that his company is like the airlines trying to eliminate human error and involvement so thats why all cell phone company's act like mac users when u walk in. Thanks for telling me
I read somewhere on howardforums about a week or so ago about this. From what I saw posted, this is only temporary because T-Mobile is making some upgrades on their data network.
I guess for the time being it’s just easier for them to open the whole data network to everyone while making whatever changes/upgrades.
My guess would be its some kind of upgrade to the internet access authentication system, and since that authentication system is down during the upgrade, the smoothest way to continue data access for the time being is to just give it to everyone. Just a guess though =P
I think its for there new 3G network. but for now ill enjoy the free service. Hope they dont charge when they finish there upgrade.

I have a T-mobile prepaid sim and I get free internet. I don't think its edge speed though because it does take a while for the web pages to load. I think its wap speed. If you are getting edge speeds without paying, I guess your lucky. No charge.
it goes faster if you use it on a computer but when using it on the phone it goes slower. i read somewhere that edge has 4 time slots and could go at higher speeds if all 4 time slots are connected but thats in good weather and nothing between the phone and the tower. i think its in wikipedia.com that i read this.
I'm getting it too...wooohooo! Much slower than wireless but it's great to update weather and rss feeds. Thanks to everyone for all the info.

I just posted this in the networking area ... I too am getting FREE connectivity .. without a prepaid card.
I do not have a data plan, am on a regular family plan, and am located in Salt Lake City, UT. I am also out of contract.
I flashed my MDA to Faria's AKU 3.3 8mb ROM. Set my carrier to "T-Mobile WAP", and voila! I get free access.
I freaked the first time it started up, and was downloading data.. thinking I was going to get a big fat bill.
I called customer service, and long story short, they told me that if I could connect, I was lucky, because it is a fluke, and I would be shortly disconnected thereafter. I was also told that I would NOT be charged.
So ... there you have it. Free (for a limited time) data access on T-Mobile.

I think the representatives dont know about the upgrade until there almost finish upgrading. as i been seeing its been a long time, maybe since 2005 that people have reported this. It makes me think that they are updating all of the network. that will also means that they will be taking out 3g phones and i could finally use my htc tytn on tmobile for internet instead of cingular.

I am also wondering when it is going to end so I won't get charged for data usage
While this may sound like me complaining, I do understand I ws getting away with not having to pay for internet.
Has anyone else noticed that the TZones loophole has been cutoff. At approx 1:30am MST this morning both my brother and I noticed that our phones stopped syncing with our exchange OTA. He looked in to a couple of things on the exchagne and couldn't find anything wrong. We both power cycled our phone and still nothing. I then tried to browse the net and sure enough I couldn't. I checked\double checked\triple checked all of the settings - wap.voicestream.com - 216.155.165.50 and still nothing. I posted a thread on Howard Forums and have received a couple of responses but not enough for me to think that TMo stopped the service. Maybe they are just doing some sort of upgrade\maintanence? Wishfull thinking. I guess if not I will have to pay which is not a problem. The nice thing about the "loophole" was getting Exchange to sync OTA. I rarley used it for browsing.
I too posted in HoFo about the "outage"...
I've been out of contract with t-mobile for over a year now, enjoying the "non-proxied" direct internet access for $5.99/month that they've been offering- but in my situation, there's no way I'd pay them $30/month for unrestricted EDGE-only access.
I've been a t-mobile customer for 10+ years, but I'm strongly considering jumping ship to Cingular--doing the math, I can go to them for $20 more a month instead of $30, get rollover, AND get 3G speeds (and services, in my area) on my 8525. Hotspot service is useless to me, since I have municipal wifi access where I am 99% of the time.
So, $30 more for EDGE speeds (and useless hotspot service) or $20 more for 3G speed? For me, it's a no brainer.
I am back up and running. I removed the "My ISP" connection and set up a new one under "My Work". I then set up the Proxy agian to use port 8080 instead of just 80.
I've done the same--however, most data-capable apps (gmail app, resco radio, remote desktop) don't seem to be proxy capable and fail to work.
Oh well. Direct Push is working, and PIE can browse the web. It was nice while it lasted.

With the way I am set up I can do both, email and browse. While the browsing seems to be limited to true WAP sites I don't really mind. I really only need to connection for Push anyway.
The same thing happened a few months ago. It lasted for about 3 or 4 days and then everything was back to normal.
I'm confused. Are you the guys that are back up and running paying at least $4.99 a month for data or are you getting completely free data access??

So you don't have the Proxy settings in? That is the only way I can get mine to wrk for both Browsing and Push Email.
i wish mine still worked.
none works with or without proxy, i had it working for a few weeks when i got my PPC phone, but now its gone, i dont think i have tzones but i do have unlimited txt/mms stuff (family plan)
Mines back to not working again either. They must be having some kind of problem with their servers because i I can't even get to the T-zones and even if they were trying to close some loopholes so that people couldn't access the entire net they wouldn't shut down T-zones with it.
T-Mobile Making a Big Mistake
I just found this thread. I have two plans with T-Mobile. One for myself (work) and one for my family. I have been with T-Mobile for a year. After coming from Verizon and Cingular. It's been a good experience.
However, T-Mobile's lack of either a 3G network or a decently priced plan is going to push me back to Cingular. I used a Wizard on T-Mobile for the past year. I paid $29.99 per month for their "Total Internet" package. The package includes unlimited Edge Internet and Hot Spots. The hot spot service is next to worthless.
Until T-Mobile offers a full 3G network, the price for unlimited internet on a Wizard, Dash, or Wing should be $14.99 (half what they are now charging).
Since March, I've been using a TyTN on T-Mobiles network. One week ago, I got a Cingular ATT card and Cingy's data plan for $44.00 and it is worth it. I'm crusing the web between 400 and 1000 kbps. On T-Mobiles Edge, I get 75 to 146 kbs. This is not worth $29.99.
I'd keep my wife and kids on T-Mobile and get data plans for two or more of this if the cost were no more than $14.99. That's all it's worth. I've talked to many loyal T-Mobile customers who are switching to AT&T for the same reason.
I hope T-Mobile is listening. They need to get their 3G launched and keep their data rates competetive until they do.
I will be visiting China in the near future. I will use Skype or Gizmo5 while in the hotel from my PC to callback to the U.S.
But I am taking my HTC Dash (GPRS, EDGE, no 3G) with me and still wanted to be able to receive Outlook email while out and about, browse Internet using mini-Opera, maybe use Gmaps a little bit. I went to T-Mobile's website to see how much data usage was when roaming in China. It's $15 per MB which seems really steep. (Also, 1MB??? How much can you really do with only 1MB?)
So instead I'm looking to purchase a prepaid SIM. I will be visiting Beijing, Changsha, Guangzhou, and spend 1 night in Hong Kong. If anyone has any experience on what would be the best plan to get, please let me know.
Also, about how many MB's do you think I'd need for a 2 week stay? Like I said, I'll be checking my email, using mini-opera to browse for news & such, some gmaps usage. I'll use WIFI whenever there's something open I can connect to. (Is it quite easy finding open WIFI spots in those three cities or do you think they'll be scarce?)
Also, if I use the java version of Gmail to check my mail, instead of downloading it to Outlook, is that a better way to conserve on data? Will it make much of a difference?
Thank you,
Tim

I traveled to Thailand earlier this year and used a local sim for voice and data.
You'll likely need to be on a touch wiz ROM. I highly recommend you install one before you leave. You can't go wrong with cleanrom. Beans is also good if you like also roms. I used beans 14 at the time.
You'll need to add the pay as you go global voice and data feature to your plan. You can do that online or over the phone. You'll also need an app to swap apn's to use data on your third party carrier's sim card. I use apn manager pro.
Once you have the new sim, turn off you phone and swap out your Verizon sim. Pop the new one in and power on. You should be connected for voice at least. Now use your apn app to input the new carrier's info. Most of the time you can search for it online, but it's best to get it when you buy your sim.
When you return just replace the sim and return to verizon apn settings. And for the love of all that is holy, don't use your Verizon service overseas. It's expensive.

i'm not sure if they lied - my understanding was that you can easily swap a local SIM in to get access to voice and text, but that data does not work (at least out of the box). there's another post that talks about swapping APNs, which is what you would need to do. i thought that the latest OTA allowed that flexibility though...? i'm rooted and use Beans B14 though, so i don't keep up with OTAs.
for what it's worth, i went to europe recently and used 97 MB over a two week period. i saved all google maps offline before heading there, checked emails and used internet only on wifi, and only used mobile data occasionally when i was out and about in order to look up restaurant reviews and whatnot.
they pro-rated the $25 over half the month so my bill was only $14 more than it would have been normally. for me, at $14 it was worth it so i didn't have to screw around with buying a local SIM and worrying about things not working.

The sim is a small card inserted in the back of your phone next to where you'd put the SD card. It lets you connect to the cellular provider. You have a Verizon sim card in your phone. There are several sizes. The GS3 uses a micro-sim card. If you turn your phone off now and take the back panel off, you'll see it. I can't remember, but it may be under the battery.
If your phone isn't rooted, which it doesn't appear to be, then you won't be able to get data service, but you can still get phone service with an overseas carrier. You can see my earlier post for steps, but all you need to do is have Verizon add the Global Roaming feature to your plan. When you get to Europe, you can buy a micro-sim from one of the local carriers and put some money on a pre-pay plan. Turn off your phone and swap out the verizon sim for the local sim. Turn your phone back on and you'll have voice service.
The APN info needs to be changed to connect to data services after the sim card is changed out, but you need to have a rooted phone for this. You can change that with an app. I use APN Manager Pro. There are several fields you have to enter, but you can get it from the carrier. It's a little like telling your computer what IP server to connect to to get internet access.
Another option entirely is to get a Google voice number and use a service like GrooveIP or Talkatone. You won't have cell service, but you can make and recieve calls using your Google voice number when connected to wifi. This will let you call back to the U.S. for very cheap rates.
The easiest thing would be just call on Verizon using their global roaming feature, but it can get pricey. Ask Verizon for roaming rates in the countries you'll be going to.
[edited for clarity]
just came back from Europe and I was able to buy two prepaid data cards(Wife and I) in Germany(Orange) and Italy(TIM) and was able to get HPSA+ data without any issues, all I had to do is add the APN setting into my phone and I was good to go. I was on CM10.1 and wife on stock rom and didnt have any issue getting them to work. Good Luck

Hey !
So i purchased a Verizon galaxy s3 a few months back on Craigslist. I'm currently living in Mexico so I'm using Telcel Mexico as my carrier.
I rooted it and added the apn for telcel using hiapn and currently internet and data is working but all i'm getting is Edge or 2G speed.
I've looked around and read various different posts, it seems that verizon blocks the the speed.
This is deffinitely a hindrance for me since web browsing is really slow and downloads are even worse. If i flash a different Rom with this be taken care of ? Does anyone know of any other way of dealing with this ?
Please help! I've looked everywhere in vain
I do not think flashing any type of Rom will increase your data speed since it depends on the radio frequenices allowed for your device.
continued - thanks for answering so fast

So there is nothing to be done then ?
I can not say for your specific carrier.
But it seems that your apn settings are correct because you are getting edge/2g speeds.
The problem is what frequency Telcel uses for 4g/LTE and the frequency Verizon allows for that device.

I'm sorry, I'm still trying to make sense of all of this. so you're saying it's hardware related, in other words the phone doesn't have the right frequencies to pick up the 4g ? or that verizon has blocked it somehow and that's why it's not working?
if that's the case do you think something can be done to unlock it?
thanks again

I hadn't heard of Verizon throttling international carriers. The first thing I'd check would be coverage area or maybe the service you purchased doesn't include 3G. I've been able to get 3G service internationally.
The Verizon S3 uses [EDIT]:
2G Network CDMA 800 / 1900 - SCH-I535
3G Network CDMA2000 1xEV-DO - SCH-I535
4G Network LTE 700 MHz Class 13 - SCH-I535
If telcel doesn't use CDMA, that could be your problem.
sorry for delay

After investigating it, it seems that TELCEL uses the TDMA 850 / GSM 1900 / UMTS 850 frequency bands for its network. So this would mean that since they use a different frequency for 3g and 4g than my phone there's nothing to be done right ?
Cheers.

Yup, that would be the problem. Here's some info on the differences between the networks.

Verizon offers global roaming there with 3g service in Mexico. They must partner with another network. Here's a list of available service by country:

Here are the specs for the Verizon Galaxy S3:
LTE, CDMA/PCS/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz)
Global: GPRS/EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900); HSPA/UMTS (2100)
I don't know the answer to your question but I use a "Movistar" wireless carrier SIM in Mexico on my Verizon S3 and I get ~150kbps data speed. Its not very fast but at least it's something...
So let me get this straight...
So once I root my phone I can use it for Sprint? Also, does my phone have gsm capability?
No. You can't just use it for sprint. But it is a global capable device and supports international gsm.

Has anyone heard of it? I know they are a sister company to att and they use their towers. But I have a sprint Nexus 5 if I switch and put their sim in my phone will it work?

AIO is AT&T's prepaid subsidiary and yes it will work. All Nexus 5's are the same no matter where you purchased them from. There is no carrier branding or carrier locking on the N5. From what I hear, AT&T severly throttles date for AIO customers, so if data speed is important, you might want to consider T-Mobile prepaid or StraightTalk.
I use it now. As you probably know, they have a $40, $55, and a $70 plan, with data amounts of 250MB, 2GB, and 7GB, respectively. You get throttled to 2G after you hit your soft cap. Unlimited texts and minutes are included in all plans.
I've had it for 4 months now and can't complain. Their service in my area is good, and the speeds are up to snuff what what I need at least. The most data-intensive thing I do is stream "High quality" music from Pandora One, and it does that without a hitch. Can't comment on streaming video because I never do. One thing to keep in mind though, they cap your data speeds even before hitting you soft-cap. From their website:
If you run out of high speed data access in a given month, your access speeds will be reduced for the remainder of your month of service. But once your next month of service begins, you will once again have access to download speeds up to 4 Mbps on our 4G HSPA+ service or up to 8 Mbps with our LTE service.

So no matter what, the fastest download speeds you can get is up to 4Mbps on HSPA+ and 8Mbps on LTE. Again, if that affects you then that's something to consider. It is good enough for me though.
I've used their $70 plan now for 2 months on the N5. It works fine except for at work. It's known at my work that att frequency is blocked by the buildings structure (metal walls, ceiling and metallic tinted windows) so I literally have 2 bars outside and zero signal inside. I will be switching to T-Mobile because of this. If it weren't for that I'd definitely stay.
Cool thanks for all the help. I might be getting a job at an Aio store and they have an employee plan $55 for 5gb so I was thinking if I get the job I might switch cuz sprint sucks haha

Heh I didn't know they even had brick and mortar Aio stores...
I switched from Verizon (had unlimited data) to AIO and have been enjoying it for 3 months now with no issues. Speeds are fast and I love it. I'm on the $55 a month plan.
I should tell you though that ATT is about to roll AIO into the Cricket brand. ATT owns Cricket now and it will be nationwide LTE just like AIO (if it's not already).
I have the $55 plan and service has been great, LTE at home, work and the commute. Streaming music and tethering works fine. Customer service has also been great as they helped me with the APN settings, which should be posted on their website, but are not. Some negatives are the slow ping on speed tests, a few second delay for the connection on phone calls and the Cricket factor.
Sprint and T-mobile signals are non-existent at work, so my options were limited.
what's the speed of the throttle

I just got off phone and online chat with AIO customer service... It is the worst, they couldn't get mms to work on my Note 2 and made me power cycle thinking it would work. I am done and want to warn everyone I can.

I considered the $55 AIO plan when I got my nexus 5, but ultimately went with the $60 AT&T GoPhone plan instead. Same amount of data, essentially the same price, same AT&T network, and no throttling of speeds.

I too have AIO, after finding out they don't allow VPN on cellular data I'm probably going to switch to AT&T Go Phone after I get my free month unless one of the other "unlimited" prepaid carriers that uses AT&T towers supports VPN usage. I don't often go over the 2GB amount, but I did about 1/3 of the time on VZW with unlimited, part of that was tethering due to slow hotel internet and stupidly fast LTE and unlimited data. So guess I'll put in chat sessions with tech support to find out if VPN is supported over cellular data before I commit.
Also, going to chime in and mention that it took me about 10 minutes of back and forth with tech support on the phone to get them to understand what my problem was. Also, setting up SMS was slightly annoying as they didn't tell me the exact correct thing to put into the phone. However, I simply had to click "Refresh" then "Update" for the SMSC(?) number to self populate and then work fine. Prior to that I had MMS working fine both ways (after inputting the APN settings from around the web and now their site).
I'd consider T-mo but I go to many rural areas where they simply don't have coverage for work and would like to be able to stay in touch.

Have you found any that will allow VPN? I'm on Straight talk ATT currently and it does not allow VPN either.
I cannot speak to what AIO's actual policy is on VPN traffic but I can say that I've been on their network for almost 2 months now and have had no issues using VPNs. Perhaps they just have not caught it yet but so far so good. YMMV.
Edit: So I've been looking through their terms and can't find anything specifically mentioning VPNs or tunnels but they do have some pretty standard clauses about only using your data connection for approved activities. This certainly gives them the right to block types of traffic they don't approve of but it doesn't mean they are actively policing it either. Would love to find a more solid answer on this.
Data Services Permitted Uses
Aio provides wireless data and messaging Services, including, but not limited to, features that may be used with Data Services and wireless content and applications (Data Services). Our Data Services are intended to be used for the following permitted activities: (a) web browsing; (b) email; (c) intranet access; (d) uploading and downloading applications and content to and from the Internet; and (e) using applications and content without excessively contributing to network congestion. You agree that Aio may engage in any reasonable network management practice and that you will use Aios Data Services only for these permitted activities.

Well, the one rep I spoke to on the phone said they didn't allow it. I will try talking to a chat tech when I'm home again and can test it. I know I have the VPN working because I can connect over Wi-Fi (not at home) and it works perfectly. I've tried to connect over cellular at home, and on the road, never worked. I've got all the APN settings correct and SMS working, so I don't believe it to be a configuration issue.
