Has anyone heard of it? I know they are a sister company to att and they use their towers. But I have a sprint Nexus 5 if I switch and put their sim in my phone will it work?

AIO is AT&T's prepaid subsidiary and yes it will work. All Nexus 5's are the same no matter where you purchased them from. There is no carrier branding or carrier locking on the N5. From what I hear, AT&T severly throttles date for AIO customers, so if data speed is important, you might want to consider T-Mobile prepaid or StraightTalk.
I use it now. As you probably know, they have a $40, $55, and a $70 plan, with data amounts of 250MB, 2GB, and 7GB, respectively. You get throttled to 2G after you hit your soft cap. Unlimited texts and minutes are included in all plans.
I've had it for 4 months now and can't complain. Their service in my area is good, and the speeds are up to snuff what what I need at least. The most data-intensive thing I do is stream "High quality" music from Pandora One, and it does that without a hitch. Can't comment on streaming video because I never do. One thing to keep in mind though, they cap your data speeds even before hitting you soft-cap. From their website:
If you run out of high speed data access in a given month, your access speeds will be reduced for the remainder of your month of service. But once your next month of service begins, you will once again have access to download speeds up to 4 Mbps on our 4G HSPA+ service or up to 8 Mbps with our LTE service.

So no matter what, the fastest download speeds you can get is up to 4Mbps on HSPA+ and 8Mbps on LTE. Again, if that affects you then that's something to consider. It is good enough for me though.
I've used their $70 plan now for 2 months on the N5. It works fine except for at work. It's known at my work that att frequency is blocked by the buildings structure (metal walls, ceiling and metallic tinted windows) so I literally have 2 bars outside and zero signal inside. I will be switching to T-Mobile because of this. If it weren't for that I'd definitely stay.

Heh I didn't know they even had brick and mortar Aio stores...
I switched from Verizon (had unlimited data) to AIO and have been enjoying it for 3 months now with no issues. Speeds are fast and I love it. I'm on the $55 a month plan.
I should tell you though that ATT is about to roll AIO into the Cricket brand. ATT owns Cricket now and it will be nationwide LTE just like AIO (if it's not already).
I have the $55 plan and service has been great, LTE at home, work and the commute. Streaming music and tethering works fine. Customer service has also been great as they helped me with the APN settings, which should be posted on their website, but are not. Some negatives are the slow ping on speed tests, a few second delay for the connection on phone calls and the Cricket factor.
Sprint and T-mobile signals are non-existent at work, so my options were limited.

I just got off phone and online chat with AIO customer service... It is the worst, they couldn't get mms to work on my Note 2 and made me power cycle thinking it would work. I am done and want to warn everyone I can.

I considered the $55 AIO plan when I got my nexus 5, but ultimately went with the $60 AT&T GoPhone plan instead. Same amount of data, essentially the same price, same AT&T network, and no throttling of speeds.

I too have AIO, after finding out they don't allow VPN on cellular data I'm probably going to switch to AT&T Go Phone after I get my free month unless one of the other "unlimited" prepaid carriers that uses AT&T towers supports VPN usage. I don't often go over the 2GB amount, but I did about 1/3 of the time on VZW with unlimited, part of that was tethering due to slow hotel internet and stupidly fast LTE and unlimited data. So guess I'll put in chat sessions with tech support to find out if VPN is supported over cellular data before I commit.
Also, going to chime in and mention that it took me about 10 minutes of back and forth with tech support on the phone to get them to understand what my problem was. Also, setting up SMS was slightly annoying as they didn't tell me the exact correct thing to put into the phone. However, I simply had to click "Refresh" then "Update" for the SMSC(?) number to self populate and then work fine. Prior to that I had MMS working fine both ways (after inputting the APN settings from around the web and now their site).
I'd consider T-mo but I go to many rural areas where they simply don't have coverage for work and would like to be able to stay in touch.

Have you found any that will allow VPN? I'm on Straight talk ATT currently and it does not allow VPN either.
I cannot speak to what AIO's actual policy is on VPN traffic but I can say that I've been on their network for almost 2 months now and have had no issues using VPNs. Perhaps they just have not caught it yet but so far so good. YMMV.
Edit: So I've been looking through their terms and can't find anything specifically mentioning VPNs or tunnels but they do have some pretty standard clauses about only using your data connection for approved activities. This certainly gives them the right to block types of traffic they don't approve of but it doesn't mean they are actively policing it either. Would love to find a more solid answer on this.

Well, the one rep I spoke to on the phone said they didn't allow it. I will try talking to a chat tech when I'm home again and can test it. I know I have the VPN working because I can connect over Wi-Fi (not at home) and it works perfectly. I've tried to connect over cellular at home, and on the road, never worked. I've got all the APN settings correct and SMS working, so I don't believe it to be a configuration issue.

My bill right now is around 140.00 a month, Is this right? Are there any other carriers that can offer this at a better price than what i'm getting? I would like to see the 500 min stay the same or more, and i need unlimited txtin on the smartphone. The second phone can stay as a add a line phone.

Well, I have 2 lines on T-Mobile, unlimited voice and text on both, and unlimited data on one line (mine, other is my daughter's dumbphone), and it's $120/month...and I believe they have plans matching yours now (or close) for even less.
However, I would only recommend them if you know their service is solid in your area. In their major markets where they have more solid coverage, they're great, but in other places quite the opposite.
Sprint is also very cheap and there coverage in most places is very good. Im south of dallas have very good coverage and in some areas near me no other carrier has service, not verizon, tmobile or att. But it all depends on your area.
Family plan with 2 phones for $130 a month you get...
1600 shared mins- Free mobile to mobile, doesnt matter what carrier the others on.

Also we are getting the HTC Evo on June 4. Which will be one of the best android/smart phone available, but i guess that can be argued. Sprint also is the first nation wide carrier to carry 4g network. If its in your area, it might be something to look into.

I can't believe i am getting ripped off this bad. I should've mentioned that I live in northern michigan right around traverse city. Verizon seem to have a good 3g connection around here which is very important as i use my phone as the modem for my house. Also if i change do you think i can get away with large data usage. My bill varies from as little as 40gb a month to as much as 180-190gb.
I use tmobile prepaid plan and i pay 70.00 per month for 500 anytime min. unlimited data,free nights and weekends,free tmob to tmob. Hope this helps, oh i get like 300 or 500 texts included also or maybe its unlimited.

T-Mobile seems to be roaming coverage in Traverse, MI, so you won't be getting a 3G connection.
Sprint on the other hand has native coverage, as well as 3G. It may be a very good idea to look into Sprint as their coverage is very comparable with Verizon in some cities, and it seems that you live in one of them.

Ok, thats what i was wondering cause as this is my internet i need a 3g connection at all times. I would like to see around 1mb or a little more cause right now i pull 1.3mb

-First, determine which carriers have adequate data coverage in your exact location. Best way to do this is to find some friends on other carriers (with smartphones preferrably) and test them at your location
-Let us know which carriers make the cut, and then I'm sure there'll be users on here who have tips on how to pay the least for the most with any of them, and then you can choose from there.
Are you sharing the connection thorough a wifi-router app, or by connecting by USB to one PC and sharing it out from there? I'm just curious really.

I hook the phone up through internet sharing to my server. I have the connections bridged to my network card. From there it goes to my router/wifi. I use the wifi for my laptops and PS3. From the wifi router it goes to a switch to connect my gaming rig and tv. The switch gives me the ability to expand my network when needed. It's a little confusing and not the fastest internet but it gets the job done lol.

That's cool, thanks. I kinda thought you had something a little more complex going on there lol. That's farily impressive though that your phone's connection can support all that...although I don't know if the unstable ping usually associated with a cell data connection would be ideal for gaming.
I guess then you also need to consider what phones each network has that can handle the way you having things setup. There's a bunch that can, but it may affect your choice in carriers.

Yes the ping isnt the best for gaming. It is a pretty consistent 150 to 100 ping lately. There are of course times when i can get it as low as 80 and other times 1000 lol, but verizon upgraded there notwork and i get around 150 every time. To keep things running smooth I usually i keep it down to one thing like playing a game, or watching a movie. It cant do all them things rly well.
If i change carriers i will most likely get another tp2. Unless there is a good android phone out there that can so the same internet sharing as windows mobile and have a awesome keyboard of a tp2 lol. Does anyone know of such phones.

That's good advice. Also, CNET has a map where you can look up your network coverage with each carriers . It may help you as well.
I think the first thing you need to determine is where you have coverage because it won't do you any good to get a better plan and no coverage.
Sprint seems to have the best deals (though not necessarily the best customer service).
I have TMO and I like them a lot but its like another member says, if you have coverage in your area, they're great, if not, then it's frustrating. they have great plans (no-contract plans as well) and great customer service.

That plan sounds nice, is there anyway for me to sim unlock my verizon tp2 to allow it to be used on the sprint network?
I was reading about Data lags on the sensation but never noticed it on mine (Tmobile US) but I did notice that my "4G" speeds were incredibly slow and went through all the troubleshooting "Ciphering off/on radio off/on" "airplane mode on/off" "hard reset" "new sim card" ect.
Using the SpeedTest.Net App, I was getting about 1MB download and less than 1MB Upload. Sometimes I'd get 500KB Download. I called Tmobile Customer Service and they said that my current android plan "$35 Unlimited Data and Text" (even though my phone constantly shows 4G at the top) does not include 4G and I'd have to update to the new plan which includes 4G for $30 5GB Unlimited (wtf?) Data and $15 Unlimited Text"....so I changed it....2 hours later....
I'm still getting the same speed. <1MB Download <800KB Upload...
Any help guys? Did I pretty much just get ripped off? I'm on Tmobile US, in a 4G coverage area. --- What speeds are you guys getting?

Did you go over your limit? They will throttle you if you go above the 2gb/5gb/10gb
I'm currently throttled and only getting .5mbps down. sucks but I got throttled one week before my new cycle so hopefully it will go back up next week
Nope. Got the phone last week and Its been slow like that since. I called tmobile to check and see and they said I was well below my usage.
You shouldn't have changed your plan. There might be something wrong with the phone or the area you live in.
That's what I asked them, I said what if it's the phone and not my data plan. I told her that Tech Support doesn't know what the problem is but they just think that the plan is old and that's why its not on 4G, I asked if I still get the same problem can I change my plan back to the grandfathered plan, The rep said that she had a problem like that before and she switched her plan and she got fast speeds but if it doesn't get resolved she will note the account so that "special accounts care" MIGHT switch me back to my old plan.

The feature your taking about, $30 for the 5G data is a Required feature if your on an old plan. You can switch to the $79.99 even more plan and that gives you unlimited talk text and 2GB web each month. if you choose to remain on the old plan, the 5GB $30 plan is the data plan we can add in the store.

My thing is, I had a plan for $35 Unlimited Data and Text but they said that doesn't support 4G so I changed the plan to $30 5GB and $15 Unlimited Text plan but the speeds are STILL the same.
I was wondering what everyone else's speed is and if I just got ripped off going into a new more expensive data plan yet receiving the same speed as my old cheaper plan.
It could be in the area your in, but just to be sure, go into your tmobile store and try speedtest while your there and also check the sensation they have in the store.

good idea checking the speed on theirs. But as far as area wise, I don't think its that. I live in Garland, Texas but go out all over the place for fun. So I go to Dallas, Rockwall, Fort Worth, and all these big cities and still, slow speeds.

I'm on the grandfathered $25 unlimited Android Data plan (5GB of 4G) and below are speeds I've gotten with 3-4 bars of 4G.
I live about 25 minutes outside of Milwaukee, WI.

Your unlimited loyalty plan is 5GB . Also, customer care can get you back on your old plan, the guy I'm quoting makes it seem like they are cutting diamonds lol.
Just call and tell the rep you speak to that your account was changed in error and you do not want your data plan changed. If you are questioning the phone, get it replaced.

called tmobile again, talked to them and troubleshooted for about an hour, turning phone on and off, refreshing network ect. and still low speeds 600kbps download and 32 kbps upload. Asked if it could just be my phone and they said no. The tech is opening up a trouble shoot ticket, saying its probably a network error and I should wait up to 72 hours for a technician to come out to the area.

I will add to the confirmations that the plan or SIM doesn't matter. I use the $25 MyTouch 3g plan and I have an older "2g" SIM card in my Sensation. I average 6-7 Mbs bandwidth with max 10 Mbs seen so far.

I have to humbly disagree with you there...kinda.
I know some here have the same plan and situation you have and granted it works in your case, it is not really fair to say it works for all.
I came from a nexus one and simply changed my sim card over to the sensation on June 9. It worked fine until day 3. I think you have responded to a couple of my threads asking about the "android" vs grandfathered plans on the sensation but I do not recall what was said. Beside that, I was connected fine with my grandfathered data plan which I used with my old SE Xperia x1. It was called a 'smartphone' data plan, which cost 24.99/mo with 400 data texts. I have since replaced the sim that came with the box, made sure the IMEI's matched to their systems (which I think was the reason for the data cutoff) and now have a coded "android" plan.
From day 3, I have been on here asking people's opinions on, "data is data so our grandfathered plans should work no problem"....and to talking with tmobile cs, opening a trouble ticket because it came at the same time there was a problem outtage in my area (San Antonio, TX). I was told that the trouble ticket takes about 3 days to be addressed/resolved.
BUT on day 4 (day 2 of the trouble ticket), I called tmo cs again and got to the second level tech dept and had an in depth troubleshooting call with the extremely nice tech. Turned out she has an android device too so that helped things along.....The tech checked my trouble ticket but had a feeling that she could fix it so we agreed to go for the gusto. Upon tweaking the apn's and other settings, nothing worked even though I have the 4g icon up on my notification bar, just no data transfer. Before hanging up, I asked her about my grandfathered plan and was weary of getting the "suggested" android plans out there because there was nothing comparable to my grandfathered plan. She then went to her senior manager who is also nice and explained my situation. The rep came back to me and said I was right, the old grandfathered plans DO NOT work and any IMEI's that come back with incompatible data plans get disconnected.
So she and her manager saw that I was also a long time member of tmo for over 10 years and agreed to set me right and not have me pay more for a plan that I am getting less features on. The manager went and recoded my grandfathered plan to read Android instead of smartphone. (I am guessing this unlimited wording is 5gb and then throttles me but I am on wifi most of the time so it doesn't bother me) Two seconds later I got a sms from tmo welcoming to the android data plan.
About an hour later I found that my data was flowing again. So I must stress that even though your grandfathered plans may still work, do not be surprised if tmo disco's your data connection. You'll still make and receive calls, but data will be disco'ed.
But to the OP with slow data issues, have you changed the Sim card at all? I would advise against calling tmo and asking them to check the IMEI they have on file because I think that is what flagged my phone to begin with. And as for the data plan issue, you will need to come to grips with what works for you.
This may not be common, but I had to get a new SIM card for my N1 when they rolled out their HSDPA stuff locally I couldn't get any 3G at my apartment after they did; an updated/new SIM card fixed that issue.
As far as the plan, they tried to get me on the same gimmick; said that I should upgrade to the 4G plan etc etc...I politely refused it and im getting 6mbps here in Blue Bell, PA

Yeah they were trying to be nice & all, but seriously, Tmobile blocked all Sensation IMEIs that weren't on their newer plans to force you to "upgrade". It's not the CS reps fault though, but tmobile's & their wanting everyone on a tiered data plan. Your old plan was fine, even worked for a few days (like mine did) until tmobile flipped that lovely IMEI blocking switch.

Lets take a step back. What speeds were you seeing before with your old 3G phone? It's possible that you're just an area with slow speeds. If that's the case call and demand your old data plan back.
T-Mobile has done a lot of cleaning of data usage on their end.
Their new phones and systems are made with code that specifically disregard older data plan coding.
Basically this allows them to say that your old data coding is incompatible with the newer system they're using.
Just looking for you to pay more for less. ( T-Mobile loves AT&T )

I'm using a Sensation with an older Android plan ($24.99 + 400 Texts) and i'm also using a sim card from 2005. I have "4G" speeds. What everyone needs to realize is the technology is the same across the board. There is technically no such thing as 4G on the t-mobile network. If your old "3G" phone worked in your area, then your new "fake 4G" phone will work. If it doesn't then demand to talk to someone else until they fix it. T-mobile shouldn't be tricking anyone into upgrading to a 4G plan by saying it wont work, because that's 100% untrue. All t-mobile did was increase the bandwidth that their old cell-sites would operate at. If your device can handle the faster speeds then it will benefit from the bandwidth upgrade. If the device can't handle the extra bandwidth then it will connect at the fastest speed that it is physically capable of.
I can see T-Mobile's argument if their 4G was LTE or WiMax, but it's not. If T-Mobile wants to argue about 4G speeds then demand to keep your plan at 3G speeds. Their 3G devices would theoretically reach 7.2Mbs which i've only managed to beat once with this new phone, and that speed was 7.7Mbs.
Sorry for the long post. In short, don't give in and fight with them. They'll fix it. Keep escalating the issue until you reach their CIO if you have to.

I've been a very satisfied and loyal supporter of Ting for nearly two years now. However, I've decided to get myself a 32gb Nexus 5 from the playstore (arrives tomorrow, yaay!) with the hopes that I'll eventually be able to BYOSD to Ting. For now, I'm trying to settle on an ATT MVNO since TMO coverage is awful around here for miles.
Here is my usage on Ting:
under 100 mins
no texts (I use Google voice for SMS)
150mb average data use
I pay about 15-25ish per month depending on usage.
What I'm looking for in an ATT MVNO:
Decent Customer Service
Unliminted (or even decent amount) SMS/MMS/VOICE
Decent amount of data, say 250mb-1gb.
Reliable autopay and number porting.
No more than $40/month
I would like to port my Ting number once I feel "safe" and satisfied with the ATT MVNO.
I'm thinking of going with red pocket for now since I can get a free sim from callingmart.com with 39.99 of service. However, I'm nervous about the repeated complaints about inconsistent data throttling with Red Pocket. If I like the ATT service, I'd like to port my "real number" over to AIO because I've heard they have better CS, LTE, and a more reliable data throttle of 256kbps after the plan cap. I wish they had more LTE data (in my price range), but I can deal with the 256kpbs throttle if I breach 250mb.
I like the larger data pools of Airvoice and RP but the strange stories about having to call in to reset data or restore service are unsettling. I've never had an issue with my Ting service. Ting CS kind of spoils you.
Am I being paranoid?

I would also like to see what the community here thinks on this matter. I'm currently with Sprint, was considering Republic Wireless, but when the Nexus 5 came out decided that I prefer that to the MotoX and so was looking at Ting. Hopefully they will come around to allowing a Play Store Nexus on Ting, but until then I'd sure like to get away from my $85 per month plan I have with Sprint towards something in the $20-$40 range. ATT and Sprint have decent coverage where I am, T-Mobile is not an option, unfortunately.

I would highly recommend Aio Wireless. Their $40 plan fits all of your criteria, and I've been really satisfied with them after 2 months. I currently use the $70 plan and the speeds and coverage are great. I would also recommend installing their MyAio app to keep track of data/pay/etc and their Visual Voicemail app which is really great to use. I can't comment on their Autopay feature because I like to manually pay my bills to keep track of where all of my money goes, but their payment method via app and desktop is painless and quick.
About 18 months ago, I left Sprint for Straight Talk. They have everything unlimited* for $45. You get unlimited 2.5GB of 4G (LTE & HSPA+ for at&t SIM, HSPA+ for T-Mobile SIM), then 2G until the end of the month. I only had to call them once after i ported a secondary Google Voice number to them (I couldn't add a service card online). I read that the customer service is bad, but it seemed fine to me. I usually get around 5Mbps, but sometimes its faster/slower too.
I'll second Straight Talk. I've had no problems whatsoever with them. I did have to call to activate my SIM card (the online process messed up somehow), and I had to talk to the manager as the first rep had no idea what I was talking about, but overall it's been great.
I know this may seem strange given that Verizon is not allowed to throttle the 700 MHz c block according to the FCC, but today I spoke with a lady who was a higher tier tech support (not sure if it was 2 or 3) who claimed the reason I was having data issues is because they are having system issues where people using large amounts of data are being throttled when using LTE.
She stated that normally this should only happen on 3G but confirmed she has spoke to multiple people with this issue and that it is a nationwide problem that has been effecting some people since march 23rd. This also wasn't something she spoke lightly or timid about rather she was bold and confident that was the issue I was having.
Strangely the problem seem to go away when I switched to Global mode but that could have been a coincidence and more related to network congestion on that particular tower. Has anyone else been experiencing these issues?
I'm also wondering if this is related to the LTE advanced tower upgrades they are doing but can't find any info on when or if they have upgraded the Austin, Texas area.
LOL, might be coincidence but I'm going through the same thing in MD. My post should be a few down from here but I get perfect 3G, absolutely no 4G signal. Replaced SIM card, Verizon set it up and I had 4G. Within 5 minutes after the activation, the signal went to zero, then restarted and I was at 3G again. I'm heading to Verizon store in a bit to get this taken care of.

I'm doubtful that you'll be able to get much done on the store level. Your best bet is to call tech support and the first call will be long as well as tedious just humor them. The second call back they will ask if your calling about the same issue say yes. This is when you will get transferred to a higher tier or higher authority where they can actually report the issue to the field techs and then possibly get a fix in the works.
How much data do you use?
The second person told me I had used over 100gb last month but that was not a justified reason for me to be throttled on 4G, it would be if I was on 3G.
I also find it curious that we both have a s3, I did a search and couldn't find any similar posts which makes me wonder if its because we don't have the LTE advanced functionality. I wish we knew where they are upgrading the towers.

They are if you're on unlimited. The throttling isn't allowed if you're on a tiered data plan - but unlimited plans weren't covered by the FCC's ruling, IIRC.
Well...it was my sim card. Apparently the one I purchased online is an older version. They replaced it with a new sim, rebooted and I sat there waiting. After a couple of minutes, the no data signal came back so got the sales rep and signal came back, to 4G like a champ. I can't honestly tell the difference between the sim they had and the one I purchased online. She did she throttling is a possibly for next year, but no plans this year but take it for what it's worth. It was no charge for me to get the sim card and took no time.

I just wanted to confirm that this issue has been resolved by Verizon, I believe it was network issue that was fixed within one day of me calling tech support.

There is no real distinction from the FCC of tiered vs unlimited. The only possible reason verizon could is by using the excuse of trying to protect vulnerabilities on their network.

It's saying it can't restrict (throttle) users who pay for the service. Tether wasn't included in Unlimited data plans (it was a separate plan on plans when Unlimited was around). Tethering is included in tiered data, therefore they cannot throttle users tethering on the tiered data plans.

From my experience I have specifically found this to be untrue but I could certainly see how one would interpret it that way. There really is no one true answer to this question but I will say the higher tier tech confirmed on the phone with me that it was perfectly within my right to have 100 gb or more per month of unthrottled 4g lte use. They don't track whether you are tethering or not...can they? They certainly can especially if you use the my verizon app as they are able to see certain diagnostics and also they can see specifically which applications are running on your phone. The tech actually told me I was running an excessive amount of apps which was true at the time and she specifically told me which apps were running. This proves the point that they know I'm tethering without paying the $20 per month service charge, they are not charging me for it.
I think your misunderstanding is that you are incorrectly correlating tethering to throttling as these two things appear to be mutually exclusive. In other words verizon doesn't really treat you differently if you are on tiered vs non tiered as far as throttling goes.
Please read the following portion taken from the referenced article on android police, it's at the very bottom:
"Finally, we'll talk about tethering and Block C.
Much hoop-lah has been made of the following provision, as related to the legality of charging for wireless tethering on Verizon:
(c)(1)... The potential for excessive bandwidth demand alone shall not constitute grounds for denying, limiting or restricting access to the network. 47 CFR ยง27.16
The key issue is that this provision says nothing about limiting access on the basis of contractual obligations - it only applies when a carrier is limiting, restricting, or denying access to data services it has promised on the basis that a user is "congesting" the network. Of course, in matters involving regulatory authority, there's always going to be some wiggle room for discretion.
The FCC is unpredictable. There is no way to know if the agency will change its interpretation of its own rules, or if it will decide Verizon's particular actions aren't reasonable. This is all evaluated on a case by case basis. However, the agency's interpretation of reasonable network management in the past has tended to favor service providers in all but the most extreme cases (such as content-based throttling by Comcast), so it's hard for me to see them suddenly adopting a more demanding standard in regard to "reasonable network management.""
Can confirm this, grandfathered in unlimited. I use around 180gb a month. They hate me and any day that I am downloading continuously for more than 1 hour or sometimes less, I immediately start getting throttled. I know this because I have friends right beside me who have verizon and they will be pulling down 10-15mbps around 20ms and I will be getting .7-2 mbps. As soon as I take a small break from downloading (usually an hour) my speeds resume as normal. It is total BS that I pay for unlimited LTE and they claim they don't throttle. And anytime I call them to complain, magically my speeds go back after they tell me to try "rebooting my phone".
EDIT: I'm from the Canton, OH region and this happened frequently. I recently moved to the Tampa Bay area and have not had a problem. I suspect the network isn't as congested (although technically does LTE have bandwidth limitations? I read in an article that It should not). Also Florida happens to be flatter than Ohio, so they have less towers I'm assuming that cover a greater area with stronger coverage.

Which backs up what I was saying. If you're on a grandfathered in unlimited plan... they have the legal right to throttle you because you're not paying for the tethering service, because it was not included in their non-tier plans. Will they? Most likely not unless you're using tons and tons of data - it's all up to VZW if they decide to start throttling or not. Although I've seen people in the Rezound forums post data usage screenshots, and some people have upwards around 1TB of data usage in a month, and nothing ever was done to them or their service.

How do they know if you are tethering or not? Can they see that? Is high data usage synonymous with tethering in their minds?

Well ask yourself how do websites know you are on a mobile device. yes verizon knows you are tethering unless you use a tether app that hides it or if you use a vpn (highly recomended). I have used 300 gigabytes of data a few months ago without being throttled so it all depends on how well you cover your tracks.

I'm not sure if there is a solution for WiFi tether. I know USB tether apps can. Your best bet for WiFi tether is a cheap or free VPN.
Has anyone here used Project Fi and/or Ting on their Moto X Pure?
I realize from this other thread that there seems to be somewhat limited capabilities on Project Fi (limited to T-Mobile as a sub-carrier; can't switch to Sprint; No WiFi calling). But I'd guess in that situation, your phone is essentially just operating on T-Mobile's network, and is fucntionallty equivalent to a T-Mobile phone, right? The other option is Ting GSM, which also runs on the T-Mobile network.
Has anyone tried either of these services on the Moto X Pure, and can comment? I'd ideally like to go with Project Fi, for it's better billing model and international data roaming support. I'm pretty much sick of paying $110/month to Verizon Wireless for minutes and data that I don't really use (I'm on WiFi all the time, and use my phone as a pocketable computer more than a phone).
I've been using Ting for several years now on multiple different phones, including the Moto X Pure. Ting offers both CDMA and GSM service, but you have to pick one, it can't dynamically switch between them like Fi can. I've had no problems at all getting Ting working with this phone, and I HIGHLY recommend their service. Lol don't we love referrals I posted a question on howardforums in cricket section then I got few pms with refferals. If you want to rely on cheap service then go for it even att prepaid or T-Mobile is better.

I was been on ting for about a month, and it worked great, although I am still waiting on band 12/VOLTE support which should be coming out from motorola soon. The data connection was good enough that I was using more data than I expected, so I just switched over to MetroPCS(TMob) which is $60 for unlimited(21GB).
One irritation with Ting was that tethering only worked on 3g. Which required manually setting the phone to 3g, after enabling the hotspot. You can play with the radio preferences by dialing "*#*#INFO#*#*" from the dialer. Although I have read that you should never mess with the radio Band setting, particularly outside the US.
MetroPCS in contrast does not allow tethering unless you purchase a metro branded phone.
I was able to work around the metro pcs tethering restriction by adding a "tether_dun_required=0" entry to the sqlite provider.settings file, and now it works perfect on LTE with the stock hotspot software.
That workaround may also enable LTE tethering on ting.
So far I am getting great speeds even indoors of about 25 Mbps most places, however the tower at my work is much slower and has typically been 3-7Mbps, but Friday was an abysmal ~1 Mbps.
In some testing I've seen, MetroPCS is about 26% slower than TMobile branded because it gets reduced prioritization. However, it is not throttled like cricket, which performs 78% slower than ATT, and is officially capped at 8Mbps.
If I run into continued periods with poor performance, I may spring the extra $20 for TMobile branded.
Been using Ting for 5 months and it's pretty great. Support is always helpful. I pay an average of $28 per bill and since I was on Sprint previously my service hasn't changed at all. They even randomly gave me a $25 credit which made one of my bills $3.75. Couldnt ask for more.

Cricket is not bad either, normally it's 10gbs for 55 flat with auto pay, I got a promotional 20gb for 55. Which is on AT&T so been really happy with coverage

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned straight talk. I pay $45 a month to run on AT&T's network with unlimited data high speed capped at 5GB. When they gave 3GB of high speed data I would go over occasionally and have to struggle for a few days with the speed equivalent of dial up, but since they started offering 5GB I haven't gone over.

When they gave 3GB of high speed data I would go over occasionally and have to struggle for a few days with the speed equivalent of dial up, but since they started offering 5GB I haven't gone over.

According to carrier tests, cricket is 78% slower than branded ATT, with both reduced prioritization and a throttled 8Mbps cap. Unlimited(21GB) TMobile is available through MetroPCS for $60 which is full-speed(unthrottled) off the tower, but sees speeds 26% slower than TMobile branded do to reduced prioritization during heavy congestion.
If you have TMobile coverage in your area, you may consider this $5 upgrade. MXPE has promised the release of band 12/VOLTE support in the near term, so this should significantly improve performance in heavily shielded buildings, when released.

Already know of this, with the throttle I wouldn't use a fraction of the bandwidth, a better talking point would be that cricket runs me through a proxy which slows my server ping. I would not go try t mobile as I used them before and get no reception at work. Will pick a Sim if and when we get band 12

And that is the Million Dollar question. IF and when.
I've been using Project Fi on the Moto X Pure for a few days. It works fine on T-Mobile. WiFi calling and Sprint are not supported.

Get a Google Voice number and the Hangouts Dialer app. You can send and receive calls in the US for free using data or wifi. The call quality isn't great, but it's better than Skype (and Skype costs money.)
