phone won't connect to windows 7 - HTC One S

Hey,
Just bought a (used) One S. Trying to go through the process of root/unlock but hit a snag very early on.
The phone will not connect to my computer. I plug in the cord to the computer, then the other end to the phone. It just keeps connecting and disconnecting. Windows 7 recognised thephone as the One S before d/cing
I have tried front and rear usb ports on my computer. I have tried usb 3 ports, i have tried my usb/esata combo ports. Same damn thing.
I factory reset the phone, no luck. I have installed sdk manager. Phone charges normally. EDIT: Phone currently DOES NOT have SIM card inserted.
Any more info needed? Just ask.

Have you tried a different cable?

Or installing the drivers.

Since he described the error as "constant connect/disconnect" the drivers wont help.
It indicates that something is wrong with the connection between the PC and device, such as faulty cable, faulty USB port etc.

Thanks for your help. Drivers were installed. I guess it turns out the usb port on the phone is a bit finicky. I have to plug the cord and secure it on just the right angle or it will not stay connected. Thanks for all the suggestions!!! Now i have a new problem....BUSYBOX will not install feel free to hop over to that thread if you are feeling EXTRA helpful today

USB Failure?

Hi guys,
New to this forum, and I'm looking for some help. Bought a used E650 from eBay, and it's all good bar 2 things - The ROM version is now outdated, and the USB port does not work when I try to use ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Centre with it Not too familiar with SmartPhones, but I'm hoping to do some C# deving on this handset, so any help would be appreciated.

Does the USB port on your PC work with other devices?
Can you flash from an sd card like the himalaya?
And if you fix it you can get an up to date update from the orange website!

Yes, it's the port on the phone that's giving me grief

I'm not too clued up on HTC phones or Smartphones in general, but I'll have a look to see if I can do just that. It's only updating the phone that I want to use it for tbh =/

So that port works. What about the cable. Have you got any other mini usb devices you could try and plug in?
Just thought you should narrow it down and make sure its the phone, and not the cable/port/something else...
When you say the port doesn't work, what does it do? Do you get the new hardware sound when you plug it in?

Just to clarify (And no offence) I'm almost done my HND in Computer Networking, and I've been repairing computers and servers since about 14. It is the phone which is faulty =/ I really wish it was the cable though. I have tried everything, it is definately the phone.
I have contacted the eBay seller, and he's willing to swap the handset for another, but tbh if I could simply update the ROM with a newer Stock ROM I'd be happy without the USB port.
Fair enough. Was just trying to help. Good luck with the replacement. Better off that way anyway, its a ***** not being able to transfer files with USB.
I doubt it that the device has a defective electronic component. Most probably the wiggling of the USB when attaching/detaching the cable has over time broken the soldering on the PBA. But first control the socket for dirt or bended or incomplete contacts.
If you are not a noob what delicate stuff is concerned, disassemble the device and re-solder all contacts of the USB socket.

Found an interesting app! adbWireless

http://www.appbrain.com/app/siir.es.adbWireless
I have no idea if this will be useful to most people, but does this interest anyone so far? Requires a rooted phone duh.
Well, it works. That's pretty cool.
Interesting indeed, but I don't think I'll find it easier than just plugging my phone in.

Same. No point really starting the app, then opening termal/cmd prompt and typing in a command to connect when you can just plug it in and go.
Well i dont want to dig up to the floor, where my AC charger is and pull out the USB cable so i can stick it into the computer and back when I'm done.
I never connect the phone to PC anyway, coz of app2sd card corruption, so this is a lifesaver for me.

Well that's understandable. Me, I have like 4 micro USB cords. One connected to the ac charger, one connected to my car charger, another connected to my computer, and then an extra one just in case.
Nooob
I dont get it to work Where on my pc should I write the connect comand?

Has anyone used this method to root their SGS4G?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576202
What for?
What do you mean? For rooting. My Wife's Galaxy S 4G has a USB port that doesnt function properly...
No one here has tried as far as I'm aware. Every time someone with a broken USB port asks it's always been the same answer. No USB, no root. This looks promising though. If you try it let us know how it goes. It would be nice if it worked. Good luck
How does it not function properly? Hardware wise?
You need to let somebody try it that can recover before you attempt.

I have to position the cord "just right" for it to connect to the computer. And then I'd run superoneclick and it would never get through to rooting the phone. I have to insert the cable in about halfway, right where it switches from not being plugged in to being plugged in (if that makes sense). If it's not in that EXACT position, it wont connect to the computer. It's been that way with every Vibrant or GS4G I've touched.
And I dont want to try it because I dont know the risks involved with this method.
Can you try or have you tried a different computer to see if it is the phone or the computer?
or a different cable. Sounds like the cable has a issue.

I've had some bad luck with non-oem cables. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, and sometimes they only work half way - like the current one I have that will only charge my phone and tablet, but can't connect to the PC properly. I use that one at work, and my "good" cables are home, where I do all my flashing.
It has been mentioned a few times... and I agree - the blackberry cables seem the most solid of them all. Fit, feel, etc.

I don't think he read the thread. Don't worry about it. Try the cables, different computer or take your wife's phone in to repair shop to have them secure the usb connections to the phone motherboard.
OK. I will. Thanks

[Q] Can't Connect to PC with USB

I have just come back from a 2 week journey and my phone no longer is recognized by my pc.
I've uninstalled the USB drivers and reinstalled.
I've tried on multiple USB ports
I've tried multiple cables
I've tried multiple PC's
And of course I've rebooted everything multiple times.
I am on CleanRom 6.0R2
During the trip the the car charger cable got a yank while attached to the phone and ruined the connector on the charger. I replaced the charger with no issues. The phone will charge fine with usb cable attached to my PC. Is there any chance the usb connector on the phone got damaged? Anything else to try?
Thanks for your help.

It is possible it is damaged. Only other thing I know is to hook to USB then boot into download mode while it is connected. Had to do on Win 8 couple of times. It will try to refresh drivers from phone side.

I know it is a silly question, but I never used Odin to root to begin with, so I've never been in download mode. I know to use Volume Down + Home + Power button to get into download mode. But what will happen after this without Odin on the PC?

Nothing. But it may try to load drivers to pc. I have got my usb ports to work doing that on Win 8. Phone has drivers also but that is how you force it to push to PC. Make sure usb debugging is on also before going to download mode. Worth a shot.

Wow. That actually worked - PC recognizes the phone now. I must admit that I was very skeptical - but desperate to try anything. Thanks a million.

You could always try to mount usb via recovery to make sure as well.

Have you tried to change the the "usb mtp" from notification area?
Change it to "File Transfer" or "Picture" to force PC connection.

Sounds like you're using a power-only cable. Might try other USB cables, especially the one the phone came with.

Could also be the PC is not recognizing as a USB device. I forget how to get Win10 to start looking for USB devices again, but recommend you Google variants of "windows 10 does not recognize my USB device". (Shortest: "windows 10" and USB and autodetect")
I fixed this once, forget how.

Of coarse I am going to ask all the same obvious stuff So you have tried different cables have you tried to make sure there is no trach in the usb type c ends? Also try booting to safe mode and a factory reset of coarse back up with sammy cloud first it does good about restoring most stuff.....
Only other things is drivers again and try other usb ports as well as a different PC.
My be defective device also
By chance does anything come up in device manager?

That could also be if the S8+ has its USB setting to be (for example) Power only.
