Will XDA make a section for the Pro, seperate from the RT?

i my self want to see a surface pro thread.
i am already buying a 64gb micro sdxc for it and when the page is live ill order the following
surface pro 120 GB
type cover (i think i might also order the touch cover just to try it out)
screen protector
the touch pro mouse
StarCraft ][ Heart of the swarm.
I just want to at least order the bloody thing....
I agree about a new thread for Surface Pro
I keep looking at the threads everyday and I still don't see a thread for the Surface Pro.
Help us out and set one up!
You probably won't see a surface pro section because it's not a mobile device. It runs the full Windows os unlike the devices on xda-dev (if you don't count the Linux ports)

Then why is there a RT section, is it because it is a arm cpu
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
Is there an RT section? I see Win8 general, Win8 dev&hacking, and Surface (sans qualifiers).
With that said, the distinction between Win8 and Win RT that makes RT more of a "mobile" OS is much less about the CPU instruction set architecture than it is about the way that RT is locked down.
it would make more sense to change this subforum name to windows RT. i wouldn't see a point to a surface pro subforum when it's just an x86 tablet. from a software standpoint it's nothing different from any other win8 computer.

Hi all. Im sure that Surface is powerful device.I am a developer and I use VS and SQL server.I'm asking to you guys that surface can work well? I mean, for instance,Im working on a project on my desktop with these programs, can I be able to run my project in surface perfectly?

I'm almost sure that you won't be able to use those on the RT ARM version (AFAIK there aren't even ARM versions of VS and MSSQL, at the moment).
Also, Visual Studio is something badly heavy... so I doubt that they will compile it for the ARM tablet.
About the x86 Surface, well, it's an Core i5, 64bits! There will run almost everything.
If it works on any windows 8 i5 laptop, it will work in surface pro. Avoid surface RT like the plague though.

Maybe in the future there might be an Visual Studio Express addition for Windows RT.
They managed to port entire kernal from x86 to ARM and VS is a x86.
But the biggest problem is probably legacy DLLs and realy old stuff, that is probably not ported to new core OS.
That means, Microsoft needs to figure out, how to enable ARM desktop development without those old stuff.
I think this is the primary reason, why Windows RT desktop isn't opened for 3rd party developers.
They probably rewrote only specific DLLs to ARM, just enough to make Office work.
I wish, but however seems very unlikely! Personally wouldn't want to use a tablet to code on anyways. but would be fun for little things!

Well you can use visual studio for windows 8, and then compile it for ARM, using the remote debugger which you install on windows RT. But it can only develop metro apps.
The only way to use VS and MS SQL on Surface RT at the moment is via Remote Desktop
Surface Pro will run everything (though of course it's thicker, heavier, and won't last as long on battery).
I use RemoteApps for SQL Server Management Server, IIS, and more. It works beautifully.
I haven't tried Visual Studio yet.
Thank you OP. I wanted to ask the same question. In addition to that, does the W8 RT have an emulator to mount .img's? If so, you can use the 2008 Visual Studios image file. it works well with my android tab
Just wondering if it would be possible to do a full install of windows 8 on my Xoom (WiFi).
keep dreaming
Isn't Windows 8 locked down fully to only PC and registered Windows 8 Tablets?
windows8 arm is OEM ONLY so a legal copy will not exist for user install.
so even if it were possible you wont find it on xda or any other legit site because that would be piracy
I wouldn't pirate it at all I was just wondering if it would be possible if I bought a legit copy of windows 8 rt to run on the Xoom. But after searching it up on Google it looks like it won't be able to at least not anytime soon.
Windows 8 RTas mentioned is oem only.this means only manufacturers known by microsoft can use it and install it on their products.
You cannot simply go to the shops and buy a copy as they wont stock it.
Microsoft provide the software for the manufacturer and that is it

Yup yup, keep on dreaming, besides it wouldn't run all that great on a Tegra 2 compared to a Tegra 3.
Hi,
do you think it will be possible to install windows 8 RT (windows 8 arm processors version) like new Samsung Ativ?
Is there some dev interested to do this?
No... You're asking to install ios on android or vice versa... No drivers and different file structures, not to mention hardware difference, don't allow us to run win8 on an android device. This question has been asked since the galaxy tab7" gen 1 (and win 7) came out. I haven't seen it on that yet and that device is quite a few years old now...
Why would you want to? I see no true advantage by doing this.

If Samsung makes Ativ tablet with arm processor and windows 8 RT somebody can prefer it to android!
I love Android but i'd like to try Windows 8 RT, i repeat RT, on my GNote 10.1.
I don't think to be the only one
Me, I would also like to test it.
And to be honest: things like this is why we are here,or am I wrong?

Me too
I'm on xda for mods and tests
Will never be possible.
RT needs a min resolution of 1366×768

Damn, i didn't know it. We've got a problem.
Can this thread open new ways? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1960034
Any discussion on this is futile. Microsoft has already made it clear that it will only make Win 8 RT available to OEM's.

It looks like at least the basic hardware on the tablet is supported by Windows 8 RT, but Microsoft doesn't sell it directly. Your best bet is to get in touch with someone who has a Microsoft developer account, and see if they can get an image for you. That said, Windows 8 is pretty awful. If you want to turn your tablet into a more full computer, I recommend looking at the Ubuntu Touch, Arch, or XUbuntu threads in the development section.
This tablet will never run windows rt (not absolutly true if you enjoy windows rt in qemu enviroment:silly hint the tf600 is basically this tablet with windows rt.
But even then our linux ports created by only a few people run better then 90% of windows rt tablets lol, youd be jelious of our linux if you had a windows rt tablet
Hi everyone, I was offered to trade my Nexus 7 (2013, 32gb) for a Surface RT (first model with keyboard), the tablets are both nearly new...I really don't know what do to because the surface as a bigger screen, better build quality, "split screen" and other things but it also has half PPI, a big chunky charger, double the weight and not that much apps.
I don't use the office suit or microsoft services, I use google stuff for calendar/mail/youtube and I use my tablet mostly for surfing the web, tapatalk, watching videos, listen to podcast, news and reading comics/books/school stuff...I think that i could enjoy a bigger screen for some of those things but not for others, also I'm worried about the resolution of the surface.
Any advice?
Keep your Nexus. I have had both, and am currently eunning a Surface Pro 2 64gig, and the only reason is because my wirk uses aps that are almost inoperable on both android and ios.
It makes a, great portable substitute for a desktop pc, but if you dont use the office suit, you might as well stick with what you have.

I couldn't agree more and this is coming from a Surface RT owner. If the app development for RT devices was better, this be one hell of a machine. Other than using Microsoft Office I just surf the web and use it as a media player and Netflix.

I've seen that with the browser I can do almost all the things that I do with apps on android, so besides the app development on the surface do you still raccomend the nexus?
Its really up to you. Is the bigger screen that much of a reason to trade? I just bought a surface RT on ebay new from the microsoft store for $199 when i could get the new nexus 7 2013 model for $170. So I chose the Windows RT tablet over it. It really boils down to what you do with it. I have a Galaxy S4 so I have my android apps there to get my fix and I love android. But I chose the Surface RT to get a big tablet (not hardly any apps for it)

I have both.
My Nexus 7 is lying in a drawer since I have the Surface RT.
