Razr HD - Camera exposure fail in Video Mode - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to fix the Razr HD camera? In its current form its seriously flawed.
For example, I record some 1080 video in front of my very bright projector screen in a pitch black room (game replays from F1 2012) and the video recording is extremely dark, greenish, and grainy. Compared to video I've taken with my SGSIII and Nexus 4 which capture video flawlessly and exactly as I see it on the big screen, the Razr is really really bad...
I've tried a few different apps, yesterday on recommendation I downloaded the Camera JB+ app but it also just seemed to make it worse (even darker and more green)..
Has anyone found a fix for the Razr HD camera? Is there a way to hack it?? I've even found that outdoor still shots vary too, some overexposed, some underexposed, even when taking several of the same shot in exactly the same light, one photo after the other....
Surely Moto can make it better, I use the video recording all the time on this phone, and its a total fail right now, so much so I'm going to sell it

[Q] HD2 Video Camera Quality Drop

Hello there.
I just recently got an HD2 and HardSPLD'd it. I have Core Cell Evo v2 ROM with BSB Tweak installed. I have used the video camera for quite some time now with gorgeous quality. Later until this day I figured I would record a random video, I took a 2 minute video and the quality was HIDEOUS. it isn't sharp, it's blurred and almost hurt my eyes to look at! My battery percentage was running low, and I have applied 'Improve Video Recording quality" with MPEG-4. I tried different set of resolution and different format ended with same result, How can I fix this?? I was thinking it was the LOW battery that disabled HD Quality video recording.

[Q] Low Camera performance on Razr HD..?

It seams the our Motorola Razr HD has very good features that are highly compatible with top smart phones out there.. except in the camera department !
Camera photos are below par of any phone manufacturing.
With our smart developers, why don't they invest some of their knowledge in finding a solution to improve the camera quality...?
If i recall right most of the issue is hardware. Not really able to change that.

Razr HD camera quality issue: Hardware or Software ?
Report from Phonearena:
"Outside images captured with the 8MP camera look good enough for a “point and shoot” camera, as there is plenty of detail, yet the edges are rather soft. The problem that we found is that Motorola is still having issues with the auto white balance, as some images have a “cool blue” look to them, while others have oversaturated colors. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get better when taking indoor images, as the colors look unnatural, and there is plenty of visible grain. When using the LED Flash, we noticed it really isn’t bright enough to illuminate an average size room, as anything further away than 10 feet was not bright enough to see"
If you use the nexus 4 camera app theres less shutter lag

video recording lag

Video recording in indoor/artificial lighting causes video tobe recorded @15 fps and makes video blurry .. How to fix this ?? Ive tried with other mobiles and they record at 30fps in the same conditions
you are not alone. i am wondering why the low light fps is so low, too. even my old xperia arc s (which has singlecore and adreno 205 gpu) was capable of recording 720p videos at 30 fps in low light scenes.

Uh, are you sure you don't have the slow-motion video option turned on? My G records in 30fps still, even in low-light.

no no no xD. i would recocnize if i had slow motion in my videos , because the video playback would be 15 fps (but recorded with 60 of course).
And i also don't have stock moto Firmware installed. i flashed Google Play Edition Rom long time ago (which doesn't even have the slow motion feature).
The Google Play Edition isn't even the problem for the cameras bad low light performance (i also had the stock motorola firmware with the motorola camera app before i flashed the GPE Rom)
maybe you and me could post video samples to compare the fps in bright light scenes and low-light scenes
Edit: i already found a video sample that perfectly explains what i mean. immediately in the first moment you can see the low light performance. and when he moves the camera to the window (where it gets bright) you can see that the fps rapidly go up to 30fps. and when he moves the camera away again to the indoor low light, it gets laggy and goes down to 15-18 fps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWf8UBSC2tU
This is a normal way for the camera to behave. In darker light, the exposure must be increased. I.e. the camera takes longer in order to capture more light. In higher end devices this isn't a problem since they capture enough light anyway (or have an "internal" FPS that is higher), but with the G, moto has to cut corners to achieve the price point.
If framerate is critical to you, use a camera app that allows manual exposure control and keep it low. You'll be in for a very dark video though.

read my second post. my old arc s increased the exposure in a really nice and clean way and it was even smoother in low-light scenes, while increasing the exposure to a really high level

And read my post again. The Arc S was not a bargain bottom device. You only need to meet a baseline level of camera performance to get the right exposure for a given framerate. With a higher quality camera sensor, you can push the exposure still higher when needed (dark environment) and still stay above this baseline.
The Moto G uses a cheap, low performance sensor. Recording just in regular light is already just about using the sensor to its limits. Low-light goes below the baseline, and so the FPS drops. There's no way around it. The SOC in the Moto G is easily capable of recording/encoding 1080p, but the camera module isn't up to the task, for the same reason.
It's not the sensor. Its the firmwares fault. With the normal motorola camera app, you are able to record videos at 60 fps. while recording the slow motion videos, the framerate drops by 15-20 fps when you record some low light scenes, which does mean the sensor has still 40-45 fps available for recording the video. The software needs just some tweaks here and there for a big improvement in fps, noise reduction, color reproduction etc
Jishnu Snur's modified motorola camera app already does have better color reproduction compared to the stock one.

low fps
Even xperia m had this issue but they fixed that with a firmware update.but Motorola doesn't even know about this issue.idk if everyone is having this issue.btw being a bargain device doesn't mean to ignore all its shortcomings
Can you give the link to improved camera? is root required?

Video quality

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the Google Pixel XL come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
So far I'm highly impressed with the video quality. Comparing the 4k to Samsung for instance they both take really good quality videos. (and huge videos). But the fact that the Image Stabilization on this blows away the competition and it's SOFTWARE based is INSANE. One of the first things I did after I got the phone set up was to walk upstairs while filming 4k and then quickly moving back down them and the optical stabilization (although it gets slightly bumpy on the way down from how fast I was moving) it was the best I've ever seen on any phone.

This is a video of Metallica Concert in San Juan, PR, 10/26/16. The video is supposed to be 4k but only shows up at youtube as a 1080p, not sure why.

why 6p video quality in low light is better than pixel?

Video quality in 4K with anything other than direct sunlight is pretty disappointing.

When you go indoors the quality goes down tremendously.
Here is a quick comparison I did between the Pixel XL and the Nexus 6:
Nexus 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWhoCGFh_JA

The desk area looks fine, but looking around the room the quality is horrible.
Sorry to link to reddit, but I mainly post on reddit.
I also made a comparison of the videos in low light. Here is the thread if you guys are interested:

I just feel like the more information out there on this issue the better.
So far in test videos the mic sounds really muffled.

What were the settings on both cameras for each video?
Took a video at night low light conditions
Looks like a white bug on the video .
But it's just noise from the camera not a bug.
Tried again Dave enjoy bug thinking about getting unit replaced.
Has anyone else noticed this effect?
It bounces stuff on screen when I'm recording.
My wife's low light video (S8 Plus) and daughters 7 Plus) crap on my Pixel XL.
Guys, is anybody annoyed with the twitchy autofocus? I was shooting on S7, ois was not comparable with Pixel's eis, but autofocus was 100% accurate and lightning fast, you won't be able to notice it working. What's wrong with Pixel's AF? Is it curable?

I'm wondering the same thing.
I came from a Nexus 6P and the video on the latter was just brilliant!!! Specifically to low light video, it was crystal clear!!! I do a lot of metal shows records and this is very big for me...
The minute I got the XL, tried a low light video record, wow, what a disappointment!!! The video in low light and even in mid light, has a sort of smudge, like grey halo or if lens are not clean up and adding to that there's a lot of noise in the video. I did not record anything from concerts, but I'm very apprehensive... I did not expected this... not after having a 6P and knowing that this phone is one year more recent than the 6P.

I just saw this and this is the exact problem that I experience when recording in low light!!!
I also learned on google products forums, that using a 3rd party app to record video, using a different ratio/resolution can help a lot!!!
For instance, with Open Camera, if recording a video in 1440x1080 resolution (it stays at a 4:3 ratio, the same aspect when taking a photo at 12.3 MPixel) then the recording is so much better!!! The bad of Google Camera is that it's not possible to change in between many video recording resolutions. Also, in Google Camera, 4K video recording is a little better than 1080p, because it doesn't have the grey/smudge halo.
If only knew this and my 6P didn't had the battery shutoff problem, I wouldn't never get a XL !!!!
The video recording is pretty good, I usually record at 720p60 and even though it's not the sharpest video I've ever seen, it's decent.
Though at 4K it looks great, but I don't see a big improvement from the Nexus 5X which I come from.

Problem with video recording

I notice on alot of videos on youutbe on 4K 60fps.
It is like a smeary coating over the picture in movies that makes the picture look not so sharp and also artifical when watchning it on larger screen. Also when the camara moves it gets unsharp. Look at this video on a larger screen.
Look on the ground in 7:30 and you see much more details in the P20 Pro video, and also the overall sharpness. There must be some kind of possiblity to fix, because Oneplus 3/3T have sharper videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=O7c8Q-jizU4
I read somewhere that the unsharp artificial tint(?) is becuase of that the software im the camera have problem hadnling the grayscale(?).
Also the picture in the movies are oversaturaed and dosnt feel natural, just look at this video when they compare OP6 to Iphone X(6:58 in video)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzq5...utu.be&t=6m58s
I really hope the Oneplus could fix this in an update
Or is it possible that the gcam might handle this better?
