[Q] Bricking - what happens? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I recently bricked my GT-i9100 (SGS2). I looked for Jig or JTAG solutions but none were found, so i gave it to the service department of the store which i bought it from. And i started thinking about what happens if you brick the phone. This is why my questions are:
What does happens when you brick your phone?
Is it somehow possible to open a phone that has been (hard)bricked? (maybe not yourself, but keep in mind that it's in service)
If yes on above question, will they know that my phone has been rooted (and thus, warranty voided) or does it somehow just format everything?
If the service department find out that the phone is rooted, what is in their power to do about it?
I thought i had more question but these are the only ones i could think of right now, i remeber more, i'll reply here.
Please try to answer as straight as possible, i did a similar thread before but didn't get the answers i was looking for.
Thank you for the time and extra thanx for replies
Regards.
PS. If you have any question which i can answer that will ease giving the answers, feel free to ask.

I think they will know the device is rooted.. Voiding the manufacturers warranty.. :S
Well, I only know a way to brick the phone, root it and make changes on software.. So, I think your warranty is void...

There r two types of bricks..
Soft and hard brick..
Soft brick can be easily unbricked but hard bricks are not..
Yes they will know that your phone is rooted..
Many times service centers have repaired rooted phones of some people as i hv read in some posts..
Sent from my GT-I9100G using xda app-developers app

It's easy for them to find out if it's rooted, unless steps are taken to mask it, but obviously you can't do that after a hard brick.
They might not void your warranty though, either because they don't care to report it or because they don't bother looking for it...

Hope they take it easy on me

Lol, one time I actually crashed my old LG P500, and it was rooted, with overclock, chainfire, blablabla..
So I took it to the service, it still had a warranty, and they actualy don't give a * about root or anything. They fixed it for free

[Q] rooting for friends?

How do you guy's feel about rooting for other people? I've been on xda for a while and a lot of my friends look to me for advice for anything mobile. A lot of my friends could benefit from root, but its much to confusing for their layman minds. I've held off for rooting for anyone because I feel like each person should understand the process for themselves so that they can self update roms and kernels and etc. I just wanna know what kinds of situations you guys have been in like this.
Bring them to the dark side man.
Since its really easy to unroot phones and restore them to origional state I've said to loads of friends "here's what your phone can do." Usually setting CPU. Removing ads and wifi tethering is enough to convince them not to unroot
Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk
I would be careful with it. You dont want to root your friend's phone, then have them accept an OTA and screw everything up. Or take it into the carrier's store for a fix and have them void the warranty.
As George H. W. would say, "wouldn't be prudent."

I wouldn't suggest it. Mainly because it voids the warranty.
It will void the warranty, but I found a universal unrooting technique. Seaech my threads for: [UNROOT] Unroot all android devices to unvoid warranty

Can i send my Sensation in for waranty with S off?

I followed a tutorial on youtube on how to unroot my sensation but when i got to the last part of restoring S on it wouldnt work. So can i send my phone in as is or will they know it is off.
''Warranty''
I remember I read from somewhere stated that rooted/S-off will void warrant.
S-On it back. S-off with the official method will void your warranty. If yours is the Revolutionary.io method then you're fine. But you still need to S-On
I keep trying to but I can't get adb to work again. I will try again today hopefully it will work. Do you know if I can upgrade to 3.5 with s off? Could it brick my phone? I already unrooted my phone and put the stock Rom back on. But can I do it with s still off? And will I be able to root again later if I want to if I upgrade?

Why ask the same question twice in 2 threads?
I think there needs to a be a thread which is mandatory for everyone to read and answer a question based on said thread before being allowed anywhere near the rooting procedure. Too many n00bs ain't got a clue what they're doing
Sorry if I offended you Bro.

no you cant.. you have to get it back to S-ON and you can go to this forum to learn how to do that..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1201773
if thats hard you can watch some step by step videos on youtube as well.
Thanks for the link i downloaded the video. I will try it tomorrow. If I can't do it then I'm EFFED.

For what its worth...Some people permanently bricked their phone by doing s-on wrong. Also, many have returned s-off phones for warranty issues without problems. Even the HTC method of unlocking the bootloader will not void the warranty 100%...This was confirmed a while ago folks.
matt
So you are saying I can send it back for sure with s off? Are you sure? If I send it back and they know I voided my warranty they will charge me 30$ bucks. I have to know for sure before I send it to them.

No its not answered you can still send it in if you 100% restore it that is a very narrow way of looking at it.

I guess that's referring to me!
A pop quiz kinda thing would be a good idea though, then it can tell people what areas they need to read up on before attempting root, maybe even linking to wikis that explain it all in laymans terms so the total n00b like myself can get their head round the simple stuff, then gradually look deeper into the whole thing. Instead people like myself just end up pestering members with question upon question, as even if we search, the existing threads expect some knowledge on the subject anyway and use terminology that total novices don't understand yet.

Looking For Volunteers To Test BL Unlock (you could get money)

Hi, so jimbridgman and I have been working on the Boot Loader unlock stuff, and may have an idea. It seems to easy to be true but is worth a shot.
Now, this means we need someone to test it. Here is what we are asking for:
1. at least 1 person to test, we will not need more than 1 person for this initially, but if it fails we will likely need more so feel free to volunteer anyways and we can renegotiate the terms for a later test
2. you must have access to a computer with fastboot and be familiar with how to use it.
3. You must be familiar with how to get yourself out of a general softbrick, such as a bootloop.
4. You will be paid 20% or $150 of the bootloader unlock bounty (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837363), whichever is lower if and only if this method of unlocking succeeds.
5. If this fails, which it most likely will, You will almost definitely be HARD BRICKED. That means you now own an expensive paper weight. That said you will likely be able to get a replacement through AT&T if you are with them so make sure you know your options.
6. You must be on ICS or Be willing and know how to upgrade to it.
7. Your phone must be a U.S. AT&T model

You must also fully understand that we do not take responsibility for what happens to your phone and we are well aware that it will likely brick. you CANNOT hold us or anyone else responsible if you are unable to restore or get a replacement.
That said we will do our best to help you unbrick if possible, but it likely will not be.
Please reply here if you are interested and Jim or I will PM you with more info. feel free to ask any questions you have here as well.
I'm in. PM me in you need to, I have nothing to lose, and (hopefully) everything to gain! :good:
Thanks lkrasner!
So this will test to see if we are even able to use that BL we found, just so that everyone has an inkling of what we are doing.
If your still looking for volunteers Im in
I have fastboot on both windows and ubuntu
I have recovered from many soft bricks
I am willing to sacrafice my phone if I need to
I've got to do a bit of charging - didn't realize I let my phone power off with no juice, so I'll report back in about an hour or so... Sorry.
Edit: I will PM Jim and lkrasner my results. Stay tuned guys.

I'm in when y'all are done with tweaking. Building a Linux server for my daughter's school. It's going too good I have to have some excitement over the weekend.
...
Can you tell us what you tried or a simplified run down?
mind sharing the details & result?
Without getting too involved in details, basically the awesome developers here made up a flashable .zip using the NS Bootloader. Flashed fine, no brick, but as Jim mentioned above, still locked. Also, as mentioned by Jim, he and the other guys are still tweaking things, so please... EVERYONE... stay patient and don't start getting all worked up just yet. I'll leave the rest of the updates to him, lkrasner, alteredlikeness, and/or cogeary.
And guys, please don't explode this thread with asking for updates, when they come, you will be informed as soon as they are discovered. Just stay calm, patient, and keep fingers and toes crossed...
Thanks for letting us know what's going on. I'm just an info junkie. Its all for the bigger picture. Plus when I talk about it with people like my pops who's been using Linux and embedded systems since the beginning I can give a little run down. Who knows maybe a fresh idea might pop out. Again thanks for the update and all the work.

Once you have flashed have you tried doing the fastboot commands to attempt to retrieve the device id and unlock keys that are needed for the Moto unlock bootloader site? Maybe the NS Bootloader is locked but has the ability to be unlocked via this site. Just a thought.

I was thinking the same thing.
I am no expert, but that seems highly unlikely. considering that moto doesn't support unlocking our device, and it is their web site you need to get the codes from.

Tell them that they need evidence to prove that this phone is damaged.
If that doesn't work, nothing will unfortunately.

well after lot of days passed and further going...
Hey guys ! i got reply from HTC team saying firstly "The handset has physical damage"... then talking higher authorities they said "Its a internal damage caused during water or some physical accident"... i pulled them more and now they are sticking that its due to third party software install.. "i said , that they too provide 3rd party tools with the initial device." I think they want to say its warranty is void due to bootloader unlock and rooting device ? even i have relocked device while submitting them..
well what should i do next to get it replaced or repaired without paying them ???
also, if possible should i go with legal case in consumer court to win my part ?
please guide me ?
please help anyone ?????????
when you unlock your bootloader with the htcdev site or whatever using the unlock tool, your IMEI gets posted so no matter if you relock it I don't think you can get it fixed.

Say that they have changed excuses three times, tell them the excuses. Say that you will be forced to take legal action if you are charged.
If they still don't do it, just get the phone back, no repair.

Help: Bricked phone - need someone in Australia

Hi guys,
I've bought my HTC One XL directly from Australia, through Telstra. But now I live in Brazil
Well, I bricked my phone pretty hard. I even bothered reading all the topics about my stituation to see if there was any available solution. Turns out there isn't.
Well, at least through the community. From what I gathered, HTC is able to refurbish it and send it back - or at least exchange for another one.
The problem is, since this device is not sold in Brazil, HTC-Brazil simply don't do any kind of repair on it. So, my only hope lives in a good australian soul accepting to receive my phone and do me this big favour of checking if HTC-Australia would help me - even if I have to pay some technical fee.
I know this forum is not exacly for something like this, but I'm out of ideas. And since my investment was pretty big and I can't afford another one right now, I'm here begging for some help.
If this good soul exists, please, PM me so we can go through details.
Thanks in advance!
I feel you man..what'd you do to your phone? And when you get on the phone with HTC Australia tell them the truth I've seen them take pity on some people for flashing the wrong thingss and making it free to recover

Thanks man. Well, I was absolutely used to the HOX with Tegra 3, once I got the XL I thought I know almost everything. It worked well for a while, but things went sour when I tried to downgrade. I think it corrupts some stuff on the phone, and after that I think it's not possible to install a RUU. Well, I tried to anyway and found out that the hard way.
I was already pretty honest with them. I talked to them online, told them the whole story, but they said they could do nothing for me since I was in Brazil. And, as I said, HTC-Brazil was completely useless, since they don't sell this device here.
That's why I'm trying to find some help from an australian mate here at the forum. 'Til now, I had no success.
I found a guy who does JTAG here in Brazil. Since I'm having a hard time doing it trough HTC, I think I'll try this one last resort. I think I got almost nothing to lose by now.

Hey timmaaa!
I'd need that person to give me an address to send the device, and after that I'd use this address to ask HTC what should I do.
Possibly I'd need it to be sent to HTC or Telstra.
But it's ok, by now I took the second possibility. I sent it to be used in a test with Riffbox. Now all I have to do is pray, as much as I can.
Anyway, thanks for replying!

Thanks man. I found int while I was doing my research yesterday.
Anyway, I found another site, a brazilian one (amigoandroid.com.br) which does the same service. I called him, and he sound pretty good technically, even explaining to me why jtagiing the Tegra version is a no-go. Also, I found some pretty good reviews about him in some brazilian forums.
He also explained to me that this process for the One XL is still in beta testing. But, as I said, I got pretty much nothing more to lose. For me it's ok if it ends up bricked if it makes future bricked devices come back to life.
Beside that, the price is basically the same, but I save money from the shipping and save some time I'd use to explain brazilian customs that the device was already mine, that I was sending it for repair and yadda yadda.
Anyway, thanks for the help. Will keep posted and, in cade anyone ends up screwed like me, they may fin a light at the end of the tunnel.
