Hi, so jimbridgman and I have been working on the Boot Loader unlock stuff, and may have an idea. It seems to easy to be true but is worth a shot.
Now, this means we need someone to test it. Here is what we are asking for:
1. at least 1 person to test, we will not need more than 1 person for this initially, but if it fails we will likely need more so feel free to volunteer anyways and we can renegotiate the terms for a later test
2. you must have access to a computer with fastboot and be familiar with how to use it.
3. You must be familiar with how to get yourself out of a general softbrick, such as a bootloop.
4. You will be paid 20% or $150 of the bootloader unlock bounty (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837363), whichever is lower if and only if this method of unlocking succeeds.
5. If this fails, which it most likely will, You will almost definitely be HARD BRICKED. That means you now own an expensive paper weight. That said you will likely be able to get a replacement through AT&T if you are with them so make sure you know your options.
6. You must be on ICS or Be willing and know how to upgrade to it.
7. Your phone must be a U.S. AT&T model

You must also fully understand that we do not take responsibility for what happens to your phone and we are well aware that it will likely brick. you CANNOT hold us or anyone else responsible if you are unable to restore or get a replacement.
That said we will do our best to help you unbrick if possible, but it likely will not be.
Please reply here if you are interested and Jim or I will PM you with more info. feel free to ask any questions you have here as well.
I'm in. PM me in you need to, I have nothing to lose, and (hopefully) everything to gain! :good:
Thanks lkrasner!
So this will test to see if we are even able to use that BL we found, just so that everyone has an inkling of what we are doing.
If your still looking for volunteers Im in
I have fastboot on both windows and ubuntu
I have recovered from many soft bricks
I am willing to sacrafice my phone if I need to
I've got to do a bit of charging - didn't realize I let my phone power off with no juice, so I'll report back in about an hour or so... Sorry.
Edit: I will PM Jim and lkrasner my results. Stay tuned guys.

I'm in when y'all are done with tweaking. Building a Linux server for my daughter's school. It's going too good I have to have some excitement over the weekend.
...
Can you tell us what you tried or a simplified run down?
mind sharing the details & result?
Without getting too involved in details, basically the awesome developers here made up a flashable .zip using the NS Bootloader. Flashed fine, no brick, but as Jim mentioned above, still locked. Also, as mentioned by Jim, he and the other guys are still tweaking things, so please... EVERYONE... stay patient and don't start getting all worked up just yet. I'll leave the rest of the updates to him, lkrasner, alteredlikeness, and/or cogeary.
And guys, please don't explode this thread with asking for updates, when they come, you will be informed as soon as they are discovered. Just stay calm, patient, and keep fingers and toes crossed...
Thanks for letting us know what's going on. I'm just an info junkie. Its all for the bigger picture. Plus when I talk about it with people like my pops who's been using Linux and embedded systems since the beginning I can give a little run down. Who knows maybe a fresh idea might pop out. Again thanks for the update and all the work.

Once you have flashed have you tried doing the fastboot commands to attempt to retrieve the device id and unlock keys that are needed for the Moto unlock bootloader site? Maybe the NS Bootloader is locked but has the ability to be unlocked via this site. Just a thought.

I was thinking the same thing.
I am no expert, but that seems highly unlikely. considering that moto doesn't support unlocking our device, and it is their web site you need to get the codes from.

LOL...
Without a stock ROM, we have been unable to develop much...
What have you developed, here?
Mostly the community is hacking the stock installed rom, and fixing what Motorola has purposefully broken, but with out a few more pieces and a working sbf, you are not going to get a "Stock" ROM.
If you really want to help out go jump into the bootloader unlock forum:

I use cheesecake 4 times a day every day. If I find something I compare it to what others have found.. What have I developed? Nothing more then a headache. Using the bionic safestrap I have been able to recover from 3 soft bricks. 2 of them using adb to push to the phone and 1 using the restore tool. But i had to remount /emmc to /sd-ext. But I think at this point I am done trying anything with this phone.
One more thing.. what can't we use all the stock files I've pulled from the phone to make a flash able zip?

Seems like you know a lot more than all of us who have been working diligently for the last 60 or so days with this phone.... Why don't you give it a try and see if you can create a flash-able zip.
You can't build a flash-able zip, because you can not zip or tar files on the filesystem that are in use, and the kernel has a ton of files open and locked. the backup software gets around this in a couple ways that we really can't do, and backups are useless to make flash-able zip from. That is why we need the sbf or fxz or source code to make a flash-able, zip or ROM.
That is why we have warned everyone over and over and over, about trying things we post, right now. The information is not to try out, it is sharing of the developers, and for those of us working on actually developing solutions for this phone. There have been so many bricks, because people are not listening.... I am actually thinking of trading my phone with a buddy to get out of this, because I am tired of hearing about all the bricking people are doing, and having to help save someone who did something to their phone that they did after we told them not to.
Unless You Know What You Are Doing Don't Try This At Home. Until we get the fxz or sbf files. I am getting tired of saying this...
P.S. doing work on the cheesecake thing does not make you a Developer. Hell I am not an Android Developer, I am a UNIX and Linux Hardware architect and UNIX and LINUX Kernel Developer, so I am am able to use all that, 20 years of experience on the Android kernel, and I have been hacking and working on phones a long time.
Now I know it is great to try things and learn, but while learning, it is best to try things we say are safe first, then once you are more comfortable with certain things, then try something daring, that you know how to do.
I am in no way trying to insult you, just realize that right now, with the little help we have on the experienced development side of things, it is real painful to get things moving forward when people don't listen, or do things they are not ready for and then keep asking for help when they killed their phone in the process.

Yeah if it comes to anywhere close to the OG Atrix board I am out so fast it is not funny.
The thing is that I am most of the time ignoring these posts, but when you 6 people all did something similar, or like the OP did 4 or five things that messed his phone up, because he/they were impatient, you kind of have to tell them, look if you don't like it, get another phone. Heck the OP tried to say he was helping the cause by doing these things, when it was said so many times don't try this....

The funny thing is the "OP" didn't do anything he was told not to due.. Instead he/I tried new approaches and have actually been able to recover from a few soft bricks at this point. We get places from trying new things not by talking down to those that try them. I'm trying to help as I own the phone too. I am not in any way "under-educated". I am a .Net developer and I am doing my best in my free time to help the community by opening up this phone to its full potential. Now, Am I impatient.... Hell Yes.. I want CM7 and ICS now. Will I get it now?.. No, but i'm trying to get the rest of you on your way. I cant believe you would try to push someone so willing away..
A better way to go about it would be to post your discoveries and share them to help others out instead of demanding things you need.

We aren't pushing anyone away that is willing to help and we welcome everyone that is willing to hel. But when you experiment know that we might not be able to help you and we have no way back to stock. By experimenting we found root, the bionic's bootstrap and we will have to continue to experiment. Part of progress is by finding out what works and what doesn't.
We need to all work together and not against each other. But with that said if you look at the amount of recent posts with people experiencing problems and calling for help is because they didn't do any research before hand and now they are asking for help for something they could have very well prevented by patiently doing a little homework.
With the progress you have said to have made, start a new thread about it explaining the procedures you went about to recover from the soft bricks so others can benefit from them as well. I can promise you we are all very interested.

Thanks, and Very well said, I agree 100%
Greetings everyone!
I've been doing massive 'net research on rooting my MT4G, and the one site that kept popping up was this one. So, I read the 'what to do..' thread and will discover my chipset and such later (my place of employment is (barely) on a 2G network). I've had my phone for 13 mos now without too many problems, running Go Launcher as opposed to Sense, and the Go sms.
Looks like I have some reading to do here, and hopefully with 13 mos or so with this phone I'll be able to lend some advice back.
One thing that troubles me is that in the last few months, I've noticed an increase in the 'Recovered from an abnormal reset' messages. I haven't read everything yet, but if anyone can lend an idea on this one, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks,
Skeebs
Welcome. Thanks for doing research. I'm not sure what to tell you about the "recovered from abnormal restart" message. A factory reset might be what you need. Ideas anyone?
You're probably right on the factory reset. I've been pondering that one for a while, and have just been a little lazy about it. Then again I might hold off until I'm decided on whether to root or not, which won't take long either.
That's understandable. One thing you may want to do is root, and then use something like Titanium Backup to backup any important program data you have like gamesaves, settings, etc. Remember though that the more you restore, the better chance you have of causing the problem, or even a new one, all over again.
I like this guy. He doesn't ask stupid questions and uses the thanks button.
And take it from someone who did the HTC unlocking update to unlock your bootloader... PLEASE dont go that route.. if you choose to root, do it with the methods here, they are far too simple, something I realized only after i did the HTC official unlocking method. Use this site for everything you do to ur phone..

My wife and I both have the "bad" emmc. Both are rooted. Both are over a year old. Both work. Your chance of bricking early is statistically higher. But I wouldn't worry about it. I've rooted 3 MT4G's using gfree. None have had issues.

I have the bad one as well, Ive flashed at least 10 roms in the last couple weeks...but ive always been a risk taker...also, there are others that are more knowledgeable than i am, that believe the "bad chip" is overrated. I don't know either way..

I guess the good news is that I still carry the insurance. If something goes terribly wrong, I could always have the wife back the Camry over it....
Not to mention, if this chip was going to fail, I tend to think it would have already. I worked outside every day last year in an extremely brutal heatwave, streaming music, quick recharging in a hot black truck, etc. I've pushed this thing further than I thought it could go and it hasn't failed yet (save the battery, I had to replace it after the summer).
The rewards outway the risks, so I shall drive on. Thanks for your feedback!
I kinda have that excited tingly feeling that I had before I built my first pc back in the late 90's...

I also had a Mt4g with the "bad chip" there is some truth to the name. After probably 30 flashes she had enough and just stopped booting. However I am very hard on my phones. So pick a ROM you like and stick with it and you'll be fine.

So, can someone link me to a simple, current guide to rooting and removing crapware? Bonus points if I can revert all changes so they can't screw me on my warranty.
I have an AT&T One X, purchased in the last week. I can post version info if necessary.
I want to ditch the yellowpages garbage and all the att garbage (wifi, navigator, cityid, etc) and probably twitter and facebook, though I don't really care if they're there. I'd also like to enable tethering if I can.
I had a ROM on my last phone (samsung infuse) which did all this, but I don't think I want to put a ROM on this one just yet. So, I'm not new to rooting, but I'm new to HTC, and new to removing/freezing bloat. I'm running linux.
Oh, and I saw the one-click root thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167
But I read that it makes your phone show *TAMPERED* and lock you out? That makes me terrified of running it.
Edit: Oh, and I have software number 1.85.502.3 710RD... I don't think it would work anyway.
Here are the two best places to start for this stuff:
Number 1
Number 2
Good luck!
You can disable them without voiding warranty. The only thing i couldn't disable was AT&T ready to go.

Because I obviously haven't been trying to use those. Seriously, these forums contain some of the most unapproachable instructions that exist, instructions that have the potential to brick your device, and if you ask for some advice on not getting your $600 device completely ****ed by them, you get linked to google. I help users of various open source projects all the goddamn time, and I never go HERP DERP LMGTFY.
So give real advice or just don't reply. It's not helpful or constructive, it doesn't make you cool, it doesn't even clean up the forums. If you know nothing and are posting to be a jerk, then you're just bumping my post for me. If you're deliberately withholding information and posting to be a jerk, then you're actively increasing forum clutter by keeping me around longer. Either way, the outcome is that the "signal to noise" ratio of the forum goes to **** because half the posts are "OMG GOOGLE," because this attitude is actively encouraged for some reason, when in reality it shouldn't even be tolerated.
Holy crap dude, chill the eff out. My post was completely lighthearted and I was fully prepared to help you and give you whatever help you needed. Hence the that I ended it with. Not anymore!
And you know what's not tolerated around here? Farking n00bs who CLAIM they exhausted searching when it is more than evident they didn't. Answers to ALL your questions can be found in guides ON EVERY DAMN ANDROID FORUM ON THE INTERNET, including here on xda where you decided to post the same exact thread that has already been posted thrice today by other noobs asking for help without wanting to do any legwork of their own.

You can disable apps, or uninstall them by going to settings>apps, or by going to the menu on your app drawer and selecting manage apps. once there, you can tap on apps that you don't want then tapping on them individually and selecting the option that you want.

I've dedicated the last hour or more to searching for this ****. Once you've been into modding your phone for a while, you don't understand how difficult it is to get started.
I'm trying to go about this with caution, so I don't get screwed. I cannot afford to replace the phone if I screw up and HTC and ATT decide to throw me under the bus. Maybe the people around here who seem to own 3-5 phones at a time can.
The various roots that I found appeared to have users replying that they didn't work with the latest revisions to 1.85. So I'm still not even sure I can do that. Maybe those users were full of crap, maybe not. How am I supposed to know?
Back to the subject of the phone, it looks like CleanROM is probably my best option, but it will require unlocking the bootloader. So far I've seen instructions for rooting 1.85, but I'm unsure about unlocking.

Lets start over, ok?
To root your phone, there is a one click thread that is stickied in development that works great. I have used it 6 times now and have had no issues. It doesn't always work the first time but usually does the second. it will give you a "tampered" banner on your bootloader but that goes away if you RUU back to stock. It absolutely does work on the latest software (1.85).
Here's the thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424
For removal of bloatware, use Titanium Backup. Been using it for 3 years, and I swear by it. When you select an item for deletion, back it up first just in case.
Here- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
Use these two things, I promise you won't get screwed. I'm sorry for yelling.

a little pointed, but true.. i remember my first post here on xda and I was labelled as a noob for asking a question. some people are just too sensitive for these type of forums. To op, if you cannot handle the "heat" I would tell you what I was told back then: "xda is for people who want to tinker with their phone, or for those interested in learning how to do so and contribute to the community. If that's not you, go to a much more general forum like android central." Now, you can bash me like you did to that guy who was just joking, or you can take what I said for what it means and run with it. Read up, that will do wonders for you.

Hmm, thank you for the help. I still haven't been able to get that root to work. adb wait-for-device finishes, but then the adb push just sits there forever.
Do you have HTC sync running? Is USB debugging enabled?

No and yes. I have sync installed but not running. USB debugging enabled on the phone, phone in charge-only mode.

I got it to work by switching to a different USB host.
Edit: but it said no update found, so I'm restarting and setting the clock forward.

Would have been next. Always use a port on the back of the computer for anything related to root, unlock, or flash.

Well, it's my laptop, and I have to use virtualbox to get winderz. So, it was probably something related to that.
Anyway, I swapped it from a usb2 port to a usb3 port.
Yeah on a desktop it can matter. I have yet to see an explanation of the difference between ports on the front and back, and why adb will refuse to work with some/most front ports. Just seems to be that way.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
So I'm on my fourth or fifth try, still "no update available."
Edit: Ok, tried it 7+ times, how can I eliminate winderz? Is this exploit using a patched adb?
A new CVE was found yesterday pertaining to the Little Kernel bootloader, which is closely related to the Samsung bootloader. This CVE would allow us to load our own images and possibly unlock the bootloader permanently. There is a patch for it; however, first looks suggest that the S5 bootloader may not be patched if it is exploitable. The link below explains the CVE and includes the link for the patch.

Feel free to discuss this. However, please follow the forum rules, and only discuss bootloader subjects on this thread.

If this is something that's confirmed from another Dev would be awesome if they or @geohot can exploit this as well, and I would be willing to pay more money towards this for an unlocked BL.

I was hoping to maybe get @djrbliss involved. He unlocked the S4 bootloader. But I'm not sure how busy he is.

Someone start a bounty? I'd be willing to donate as I did for root.

No need for that yet, as this isn't confirmed if it's related to us.
Little side note,.....You know its funny how the community works. On one had, 2 months ago we had one of the most secured phones on the market. Then we had a community up in arms about not having root bootloader unlock etc etc. Not so much up in arms maybe but upset root didn't come as quick as it did. Fast forward 1 month, people learning to live without root, people giving up all hope and dumping the device, people getting further frustrated, and many people looking into any exploit found to see if it can be done for us. And then another month later we get root and everything that happened before hand is gone....people learnign to live without it - rooted, people who gave up - rooted, those who were frustrated - rooted and can finally sleep at night.
Now something like this comes up.....
It sounds like it may work just based on the CVE description, but im not sure how much it pertains to the S5. I'm happy with root and man if this worked the flood gates will truly open.
Wow the community has picked up alotttttt since root has been obtained. I can only imagine the potential this phone has with a cm based rom *starts to drool at the thought* and to think I was one of those who was about to ditch the s5 and switch to the m8. I sincerely thank every developer putting effort into making this dream a reality. If it weren't so hard for me to find a job right now I would be donating like crazy to everybody involved.
Idk if starting a bounty for everything: root, safestrap, and bootloader is really a good idea. I mean I get it for some stuff like root, obviously that was needed but do you guys really want to have to buy every single mod? maybe we should cool our heels a bit enjoy root and see what comes our way before we start opening up our wallets, you can always donate after the fact.

Never thought we'd need a bounty, just as you said to donate to whoever could find the exploit for an unlocked BL. SS would be next no matter what, with rumors he's currently looking into it for us, but what we really need is a dev to see this and see if this is anything special, or like with the bounty thread, just a bunch of nothing. I will agree with you here, for once

I agree. I'm happy that geohot got the bounty(and a thousand thanks to the man!!!), but let's not jump the gun on this one. I'm no dev so I have no idea on this, but I think that the past 2 months shows that if we're just patient then it will come. The bounty pages are a huge hassle for moderators and the whole concept is a little iffy if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I pledged and will be donating on Friday. But I think if we are just patient and donate to the devs like we should be anyway, everything will work out. This phone is too popular not to get devs working on it.
Again, a million thanks to all the devs that have made my tinkering dreams come true(a full computer to tinker with any time in my pocket... priceless). If I'm out of line here, then just ignore me. But I can't wait to see if this exploit pans out!!!

I agree. I don't want to start another bounty. If people want to donate to whoever figures it out, if it is figured out, then that's awesome. They support the devs who put a lot of time into this kind of stuff. But a bounty shouldn't be one of the first things started for unlocking/rooting a phone.

before we get to excited, has anyone privately reached out to one of the devs to see if this is even reasonable to do with the GS5?
This would be way too awesome

probably the quickest path to croms would be chain-loading instead of dicking around unlocking the boot-loader and risking a hardbrick
also can we not discuss easily patched exploits on the public boards ... come on people this is how stuff gets patched

Well with root (as long as the SDM apk is removed) we don't have to worry about Samsung/VZW forcing a patch on us.. so this isn't that big of a problem anymore. :good:

What about people who buy the phone after they've patched? If they don't know what to patch they probably won't invest the time into figuring it out.

Even if Samsung has their own source tree for lk/aboot, it's wouldn't be surprising that (a) they already know about this and (b) they might have patched it already in their own sources. The real question is if it's patched in the binary that's on the phone.. and the way to figure that out is to disassemble the code knowing what you're looking for. And no, I do not care to do this.. I'm not qualified to.. because I know people will ask
it really doesn't matter what the bootloader is the kernel as far as I know doesn't have a signature check enforced even if it does you could write a chain--loader to get around it then its just a matter of
stock bootloader > stock kernel > our kernel > our rom
of course writing the code and making the necessary modifications to /system and /data are complicated at best foolhardy at worst

Same could be said about those who buy the phone after Samsung patches the root vulnerability. Unfortunately, touch luck.
Some of you may remember me from the unlock Bootloader thread. I thought I got close a couple times but never had success.
Verizon also offers the OnePlus 8 pro with the customary locked bootloader. One of the users in that forum has figured out how to unlock the bootloader, but his method is not being made public. Don't ask why but there are obvious reasons why to not make it public and I understand and somewhat agree.
Anyway if anyone still has the Verizon pixel 3 XL and is still interested in bootloader unlocking you may want to reach out to the user and this thread. I don't know if he has something that will work on the pixel or not, but he may share knowledge or point somebody in the right direction

Slightly off topic but due to the fact there's no subsidized phones anymore why would anybody put money in Verizon's pocket. Locked boot loader or not I will never buy another phone from their store as long as I live!

Yes, that's what I was thinking.. Was going to try and get some info from him, but he was extremely short with his reply so I didnt feel like he was going to give me anything... Especially since my post count is so low and it doesn't look like I am very active.
Have you tried to get any details from him? He might give you a little more?
He seemed to not want to share with me either, which is his choice and right to not do so. First time I asked his reply was, and I quote, "It won't work on the Pixel".

Aww man I wish he would give us a hint on how he did it. It must be something that can be adaptable to our freaking locked phone. Or at least worth a shot to try.
Anyone had any luck contacting him again?
