Different WiFi networks - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello all,
So it seems as though the WiFi network at work is draining the battery on my phone way faster than my WiFi at home. What would the cause of the exponential drainage at work and not at home?
We have Ruckus wireless network setup at work, and I have an ATT 2Wire wireless router at home.

My work wifi was crazy noisy... Use the app Network Log to check traffic when you're at work and at home.
The thing to check for is if the the kernel sends and receives a lot of packets at work. If it does, try switching to ktoonsez's kernel over in Original Android Development. He implements some TCP congestion code that silences my work wifi.

So it seems as though my work WiFi is pretty noisy. I currently on IMOs 1.5 kernel and am skeptical to switch. But I will try it out and see what happens

WI-FI connects and every thing
WI-FI related works great except WI-FI calling. I have the router in the middle of house. The call connection is fine at first then it acts like when a cordless phones go out of range static and echo.

I use WiFi calling all day without this issue. You might try telling your router to use a different channel, and/or looking for sources of interference.
That sounds more like internet connection quality to me.
I would try making sure nobody is running torrents or other high bandwidth stuff at the same time.
I had no issues with WIFI Calling on CM7. I recently switched back to the stock rom and have had jitter issues and poor sound quality. Hope this helps.

+1.. get the free wifi analyzer app.. then switch your router to the channel with the least interference.
I try that on my next day off.

What version is your wifi calling app?

In the WiFi Calling app settings, check under Connection Preferences to be sure you have WiFi preferred for calling selected, just in case something changed it. Also, in the setting area, maybe under advanced, there is a menu option for log errors. That might help point to the problem and a solution.
Problem with wifi calling
I have a LG G2x 2.3.3 (rooted) running Xboarder's Stock Tweaked OTA Gingerbread build v1.2.2 and faux123 kernel (thank you great work) just have one problem that I have not been able to solve or find on here, my wifi calling will open and say enabling and stays that way (will not connect to wifi calling) any suggestions?

I had the same problem when I was on stock rom. Once I updated the baseband and flashed a custom rom, I dont have that problem anymore.

[Q] Wireless Access Point Switching

If this has been asked and answered, I apologize. Can't figure what to search for to find it.
I have a multi-story house and one wifi access point simply doesn't cover it all. I've wired up one for upstairs and one for downstairs. One of the two has DHCP enabled. Both have identical SSIDs and security. I do not know to change BSSIDs (some kinda hidden SSID?) Have tried setting both to same channel and to different channels - currently on 7 and 11.
My charge will not automatically switch between them. Under EE4 I could turn off wireless and when I turned it back on it'd connect to the stronger signal. Under all the gingerbread builds it connects to one and even after turning wireless on and off it connects to the original one. Under GB I can only switch between them using Wiifi Analyzer's connect feature. Under GB I've taken to setting up the SSIDs to different values so I can at least manually switch between them in settings. This is a royal pain as I walk between the two floors all the time.
What am I doing wrong? Doesn't anyone else have this problem?
Instead of multiple routers, try using wireless repeaters or extenders. A repeater picks up a wifi signal and rebroadcasts it for better reception. A network extender has an ethernet port that connects to your router and makes an access point without making a new network.

I prefer dd wrt routers using WDS. There are lots of resources about this. Or just buy a some access points. I find that repeaters have interference issues.

Well, actually my second router is currently setup in firmware to be an access point.
Have either of you guys observed a Charge w/ GB actually handing off correctly? If so, at least I'd know that it's my setup.

A repeater is the best solution? The upstairs location just barely picks up the wifi from downstairs. Seems like you'd lose a lot of thruput that way.

Tried the app "Wifi Manager"? It might help you. There a bunch others. I would try them all out to see if they help your situation.
WiFi Jumper fixed this problem for me. Well worth the money.

Seems like a nifty utility. Easier than setting up WDS, but I still think that WDS is the bees knees when it comes to having rock-solid wifi everywhere you want.

Wireless and 4G at once?

I notice that on my SGS4G running Gingerbread, that if I enable wifi the 4G icon goes out, and if dig deeper ifconfig shows just the pdp0 mobile interface is replaced by the eth0 wireless interface.
A colleague of mine has a new SGSII also running Gingerbread and when he enables wireless he gets both the wireless icon and the 4G icon. ifconfig shows both the pdp0 and eth0 interfaces alive at once.
Any reason for the difference in behavior?
I only notice both at same time when download SMS.

My wireless AP is going crazy at my house. Its custom and has some driver problem a Co-worker of mine is looking into.
What happens is the ssid still broadcast, but the AP doesn't pass traffic. On my phone I see the wifi icon and 4G when this happens. If I reset the AP so wifi works again (for another hour) the 4G icon disappears.
Maybe the sgs2 is able to connect, but not able to pass traffic. If you had a static build of netkit ping, it has an option to specify the interface to ping out.

Actually, I think I remember koush saying something on g+ about udp not working over cell networks. Maybe im wrong. You could also use tcpdump.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Lol, nevermind. Ping works.

The 4G icon goes away because you would not need the 4G data service if you have a WiFi connection with an active internet connection. It is standard even not for 4G signal, it does that with edge, 3g, and HSPS. I believe it just leaves a standard GPRS connection open with the tower. All to save battery.

Tethering drops solved

I don't know if this has been documented before so I figured I should share. I've been tethering a new Nexus 7 to my tbolt the last fee days and was having constant data (not tethering) drops on the tbolt while doing so. Then data would not come back untill I restarted the bolt. Toggeling airplane mode or data doesn't work. But I just had an idea to turn off the bolts autosync setting while using the tether and it seems to be much more reliable. In fact I didnt get a drop untill I hopped on the bolt to come here and type this up. Somehow, uncharacteristically it came back on its own. Which makes me wonder if any kind of communication (on the bolt) will break the data while tethering.
Tshed 1.6, .19 radio
Another thingI notice a problem, when I turn tethering off on the bolt it usually causes all data to drop then also.

Have you tried any different radios? I've always got pretty frequent data drops with CM roms, at least if using the built in hotspot. Do you use wi-fi tether?
Well in general data "cycles" because that's how other carriers bill for tethering. It's literally a different connection to Verizon, a different 3G/4G if you will.
Have you given Barnacle a try? It doesn't refresh the mobile data connection.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
No I haven't tried diff radios. I did try Wifi Tether and it appears to simply attach itself to thundersheds built in tether. I apparently had some settings wrong and it would keep dropping. So I tried switching to he built in and the drops continued. Then I uninstalled wifi tether and after that the built in worked just fine. Minus the data drops. I didn't mention though that when tethering the nexus 7 the drops were constant, when tethering a laptop the drops were far more infrequent.

Skyrocket Wifi 5Ghz

Hey all,
i am having some issues with my 5Ghz wifi and my skyrocket. First I will list all the information I have.
Skyrocket i727.
Roms I have tried to connect with - Embryo 7 Cymbaline and stock kernel ; Beanstalk 1.30 v.1. with mortez and marla. No luck.
Router - Linksys WRT320N - not a dual band. either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
Open dd-wrt firmware on the router.
Wireless settings - N only (5Ghz) - 40mhz wide channel - lower - channel 52 + 54.
Security - WPA2 personal with AES encryption.
i have tired many things to get this wifi to connect on my skyrocket. I have tried switching to wirelss A and N. No luck. I have tried using on 20 Mhz wide channel. No luck. I have also tried taking Security off completely with Wireless N 5Ghz and no luck there either. Only way I can get it to connect is using 2.4 ghz. I know the skyrocket supports 5Ghz because there is an option for 5Ghz only within advanced wireless settings.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Have you tried it with stock? Also try scanning the channels with WiFi analyzer. They have an app that might help you connect.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
No I haven't tried it with stock. I do have WiFi analyzer installed and everything seems to work fine on the router end. I'm getting fantastic speeds on my laptop and my friends s4 connect instantly and gets great speeds as well. So I know its not the router settings. I have considered stock Though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
But when you use Wi-Fi analyzer on the skyrocket, does the phone "see" the router. Have you tried restarting the router with nothing connected to it, and connecting the skyrocket first?
Edit: Try using different channels as well. Not sure exactly what channels the skyrocket can see in 5 GHz mode.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Yeah it sees the channel on WiFi analyzer. I've tried channels 40,42 ,149 and many others. It seems to have a problem authenticating the WPA2 key. But, going by that logic, leaving the network open would solve the problem. But it doesn't. Still can't connect on 5ghz when there is no security. So, I'm thinking Its a custom kernel problem or the hardware is failing. Not sure which.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I would say try another router someone else you know has that has 5ghz and using stock router firmware. Are you on the latest dd wrt?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Yeah the latest as of like march 2013 I believe.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I am using a linksys e4200 dd-wrt build 22000
Here are some of the settings I use:
Basic settings:
wireless channel : 153 - 5.7654 GHz
Channel Width: 20MHz
Wireless Security:
Security Mode: WPA2 Personal
WPA Algorithms: AES
Advanced Wireless Settings: shown if different than default
CTS Protection Mode: Disable
Preamble: short
TX Power: 66 (lower than default)
Afterburner: enabled
You might try playing with the TX power setting since the default (for my router) is the same as the 2.4 GHz default and is to high for the 5 GHz band.
Well. I tried those settings but still a no go. I think its a problem with the 5ghz on my phone. Maybe I need to go back to stock JB. Not likely though. I resolved the issue by using two routers anyway. One for 2.4 and one for 5. Works perfect so far. Thanks for everyone's help and Input.
