Tethering drops solved - Thunderbolt General

I don't know if this has been documented before so I figured I should share. I've been tethering a new Nexus 7 to my tbolt the last fee days and was having constant data (not tethering) drops on the tbolt while doing so. Then data would not come back untill I restarted the bolt. Toggeling airplane mode or data doesn't work. But I just had an idea to turn off the bolts autosync setting while using the tether and it seems to be much more reliable. In fact I didnt get a drop untill I hopped on the bolt to come here and type this up. Somehow, uncharacteristically it came back on its own. Which makes me wonder if any kind of communication (on the bolt) will break the data while tethering.
Tshed 1.6, .19 radio
Another thingI notice a problem, when I turn tethering off on the bolt it usually causes all data to drop then also.

Have you tried any different radios? I've always got pretty frequent data drops with CM roms, at least if using the built in hotspot. Do you use wi-fi tether?

Well in general data "cycles" because that's how other carriers bill for tethering. It's literally a different connection to Verizon, a different 3G/4G if you will.
Have you given Barnacle a try? It doesn't refresh the mobile data connection.

No I haven't tried diff radios. I did try Wifi Tether and it appears to simply attach itself to thundersheds built in tether. I apparently had some settings wrong and it would keep dropping. So I tried switching to he built in and the drops continued. Then I uninstalled wifi tether and after that the built in worked just fine. Minus the data drops. I didn't mention though that when tethering the nexus 7 the drops were constant, when tethering a laptop the drops were far more infrequent.

Stock wireless modem working after root

After rooting using z4root and wifi tethering using barnacle I re-rooted my phone and rebooted. Afterwards I was able to use the stock wireless modem (settings-> wireless and networks-> wireless modem). Is this normal? I could not use this feature prior to rooting so it seems strange that I can after re-rooting. I am slightly concerned that using this stock feature sends a signal to USCC that I am tethering. However, I don't like to leave my phone in root status (paranoid) so not needing to root prior to tethering is appealing.
This is my first post, so if there is any info I am leaving out please let me know and I will provide it.
Thanks for the awesome forum!

I am using a data counter to make sure I stay under the 5GB limit. After tethering using the stock modem this now has a count of data transferred through tether. Using barnacle all data was counted in the cell category rather than the tether category. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm guessing noone has experienced this, 3g watchdog works great for me - does it really matter how it reports as long as you have an overall % of your limit?
Thanks for the reply.
It does matter how it reports if it reports to USCC that I am tethering and not paying for the service. I'm concerned that activating the stock wireless modem sends this signal. I don't know what information about my data usage is sent to them. I'm likely being overly paranoid. It seems probable that the only information they have is data usage and not whether data is used through tether.
Does anyone know what happens when someone purchases the tethering plan? Does USCC just send a signal to activate it, our is it programming that occurs in the store on their computers? I'm wondering if they just flip a switch to activate it once or if that switch is flipped ever time you use the wireless modem.
they only see your data usage as a whole. One member reported going over n got his overage cut on half by showing off his phone lol. He didnt get charge for tethering. just watch your usage you'll be fine.
I've been using the wireless hotspot sparingly too with no issues
Swyped from my Mesmerize
what is our data limit isnt it 5gb?
Yeah, the monthly limit is 5GB
Martino, how long have you been using hotspot? Do you use it simply by going to Settings-> Wireless and Networks-> Wireless Modem or are you using a different app? How much data transfer qualifies as "sparingly"?

WiFi connection problem

Hi to all, does anyone have problem WiFi connection its stops working then, the icon shows full bars but if I'm trying to use its using the 4g connection. Like both icons are on and its using the 4g connection, sorry I don't know how else to explain.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
The thing is it doesn't turn off the 4g radio once u connect to the wifi it shows both of them connected and when I try to use the speedtest app its testing the 4g connection then changes to wifi
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I saw that this morning. It just took a while for it to actually switch over to wifi and I don't think the 4g icon ever went away.
I'm trying my best not to use wifi because I'm testing T-Mobile's service to see if it works for me.

I'm having a similar problem. I have a terrible T-Mobile signal in my house so I always have wi-fi enabled. I've noticed a couple of times that my phone tries to use the mobile data instead of the wi-fi data even though I have no mobile signal and full bars on the wi-fi. I have to either go to airplane mode, then re-enable the wi-fi, or un-tic the "use mobile data" box in the wireless settings, and then it will switch to wi-fi and it works fine. I've had the phone for two days and this has happened twice.
One other thing I've noticed is even when I have a good signal, MMS is reluctant to send over the mobile network. If I reboot my phone and then send the message it sends right away.
It also takes a while for it to switch to wifi for me as well. Once it's on, it's on though. I noticed that to enable it quicker, turn it on and go into Wifi settings where you see all the available networks. It appears to connect instantly from that screen.
Yes this issue is starting to get real annoying. I powered on this morning and both wifi and 2g connected. 2g wouldn't drop until I toggled the data connection

here's a thread that may help. i think it's the same issue you're describing.

[Q] Wireless Access Point Switching

If this has been asked and answered, I apologize. Can't figure what to search for to find it.
I have a multi-story house and one wifi access point simply doesn't cover it all. I've wired up one for upstairs and one for downstairs. One of the two has DHCP enabled. Both have identical SSIDs and security. I do not know to change BSSIDs (some kinda hidden SSID?) Have tried setting both to same channel and to different channels - currently on 7 and 11.
My charge will not automatically switch between them. Under EE4 I could turn off wireless and when I turned it back on it'd connect to the stronger signal. Under all the gingerbread builds it connects to one and even after turning wireless on and off it connects to the original one. Under GB I can only switch between them using Wiifi Analyzer's connect feature. Under GB I've taken to setting up the SSIDs to different values so I can at least manually switch between them in settings. This is a royal pain as I walk between the two floors all the time.
What am I doing wrong? Doesn't anyone else have this problem?
Instead of multiple routers, try using wireless repeaters or extenders. A repeater picks up a wifi signal and rebroadcasts it for better reception. A network extender has an ethernet port that connects to your router and makes an access point without making a new network.

I prefer dd wrt routers using WDS. There are lots of resources about this. Or just buy a some access points. I find that repeaters have interference issues.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Well, actually my second router is currently setup in firmware to be an access point.
Have either of you guys observed a Charge w/ GB actually handing off correctly? If so, at least I'd know that it's my setup.

A repeater is the best solution? The upstairs location just barely picks up the wifi from downstairs. Seems like you'd lose a lot of thruput that way.

Tried the app "Wifi Manager"? It might help you. There a bunch others. I would try them all out to see if they help your situation.
WiFi Jumper fixed this problem for me. Well worth the money.

Seems like a nifty utility. Easier than setting up WDS, but I still think that WDS is the bees knees when it comes to having rock-solid wifi everywhere you want.

WiFi Tether Disconnect + Reconnect Issue

Hi. I'm having trouble using Wi-Fi Tether.
Whenever I'm tethering I experience frequent disconnects and reconnects on my desktop (running Windows 7 Ultimate). I can see it most clearly when I'm torrenting a file. Every minute or so the connection just drops, and 30 seconds or more later starts up again. It even affects my browsing. When the connection drops no sites will load.
I've tried three different apps: Barnacle, OpenGarden, and the WiFi Tether 3.0 Pre 12 app.
Currently I'm on Tweakstock 1.1 ROM with stock kernel. I was previously on PBJ kernel and Infinity ROM, and then flashed to Eclipse 1.2 ROM, and with both ROMs I had the same issue. In fact with the Infinity and Eclipse ROMs I tried a whole bunch of Wi Fi Tether versions but nothing fixed the problem.
With WiFi Tether, I unchecked the "disable wakelock" section, set the device profile to Samsung Captive, and tried with the softap option both checked and unchecked. Still no cigar.
I had this same problem when I used USB tethering with PDAnet, and later Easytether. I'm at a loss for what to do.
Any suggestions?
Why disable wakelock? Also, it should be Fascinate, not Captivate.

Sorry, I meant Fascinate. I've actually tried both and it had no effect. I don't disable wakelock. I uncheck the box that says "disable wakelock", so that wakelocks are enabled. Either way I've tried it both with the box checked and unchecked, and neither situation worked.
Are you sure it's the app dropping? It could be the typical data drop.

For what it's worth, i occasionally have to toggle airplane mode and restart the app. Could be a similar issue. Tethering is hit and miss, mostly hit tho.

It doesn't happen if I do stuff on the phone itself, like run ttorrent or something.

Last night I set the app to run ttorrent (at very limited speeds) and when I woke up it had already disconnected completely, with hardly any data transferred. The thing is normally after it disconnects after a minute of running it will eventually reconnect after a minute. It keeps doing it over and over.
Is it only happening when you're doing torrents? What about just regular web browsing?

Actually I think I've FINALLY got it working. Holy mother of cows!!! I did a cleanup of my computer and apparently I had some weird programs like "Sendori" and "Tages" or whatever. I also uninstalled any programs I don't use anymore and restarted my comp.
First I tried PDAnet (actually uninstalled Easytether first, which had also failed to work properly beforehand), and suddenly USB tether was working. That had me running around my room in celebration. Then I tried Wi-Fi tether, and at first it worked, but then it suddenly disconnected and said "limited access" blah blah. So I restarted my phone and comp and tried again, and it worked!!!
Holy cow I hope it lasts. I'm on tweakstock right now but I'm contemplating if it's worth tempting fate to flash a new ROM. Tweakstock is just too slow for me. My phone worked infinitely better with Infinity ROM and Eclipse.
Sigh... well PDAnet works, but WiFi Tether still has issues. The disconnect/reconnect happens much more quickly, but ultimately it still prevents me from using wireless tether properly.
When I conduct a test on Pingtest.net while using PDAnet to connect my desktop, my overall grade is a B, but with WiFi tether it's a C+ or D, with the test unable to complete the packet loss test.
Could someone here please attempt to run a test on pingtest.net (it's an affiliate of speedtest.net) while on wifi tether and report their results?
Man, I don't know how to put this other than it sounds like you are doing something wrong. Pre 12 and 3.1beta7 stay connected and reconnect after manual disconnect perfectly.
Softap, fascinate must be used.
You should back up and try a new flash. I suggest stock deodexed and debloated ep4d with imo 4 kernel. Also, ping times on phone are identical when tethered or not. If you wanna know ping times, use an app like net ping or ping using terminal emulator. Whwn you ping, ping the address with www. I strongly suggest using www.intel.com or www.google.com
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Pingtest.net has a "packet loss" test, which is relevant to the issue of a connection dropping. So a normal connection should get an A or B overall, with 0% packet loss.
Anyways I'll try the kernel and ROM combination you suggested.
Try using 3.1 beta 6. Haven't had any problems with this version

PLUS it worked on all the rom I've tried

I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to the torrenting specifically. All i know is i wouldn't want to be sharing bandwidth with someone who was downloading 2 Blu-Ray movies from 5 people and uploading them to 8. It just screams irresponsible network use to me.

I torrent all the time... Directly on my phone, not through tether.

Bluetooth vs. Wi-fi tethering

Is Bluetooth tethering monitored by carriers the same as wi-fi? Is there any difference as far as AT&T is concerned?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I don't think it matters how you tether, att is going to look at data usage and browser user id.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Bluetooth tether though has less power requirement. e.g phone will live another 2-3 hours more in this mode.
