[Q] Wireless Access Point Switching - Verizon Droid Charge

If this has been asked and answered, I apologize. Can't figure what to search for to find it.
I have a multi-story house and one wifi access point simply doesn't cover it all. I've wired up one for upstairs and one for downstairs. One of the two has DHCP enabled. Both have identical SSIDs and security. I do not know to change BSSIDs (some kinda hidden SSID?) Have tried setting both to same channel and to different channels - currently on 7 and 11.
My charge will not automatically switch between them. Under EE4 I could turn off wireless and when I turned it back on it'd connect to the stronger signal. Under all the gingerbread builds it connects to one and even after turning wireless on and off it connects to the original one. Under GB I can only switch between them using Wiifi Analyzer's connect feature. Under GB I've taken to setting up the SSIDs to different values so I can at least manually switch between them in settings. This is a royal pain as I walk between the two floors all the time.
What am I doing wrong? Doesn't anyone else have this problem?

Instead of multiple routers, try using wireless repeaters or extenders. A repeater picks up a wifi signal and rebroadcasts it for better reception. A network extender has an ethernet port that connects to your router and makes an access point without making a new network.

I prefer dd wrt routers using WDS. There are lots of resources about this. Or just buy a some access points. I find that repeaters have interference issues.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App

Well, actually my second router is currently setup in firmware to be an access point.
Have either of you guys observed a Charge w/ GB actually handing off correctly? If so, at least I'd know that it's my setup.

A repeater is the best solution? The upstairs location just barely picks up the wifi from downstairs. Seems like you'd lose a lot of thruput that way.

Tried the app "Wifi Manager"? It might help you. There a bunch others. I would try them all out to see if they help your situation.

WiFi Jumper fixed this problem for me. Well worth the money.

Seems like a nifty utility. Easier than setting up WDS, but I still think that WDS is the bees knees when it comes to having rock-solid wifi everywhere you want.

Wifi hotspot app issue

Running heinz 57 rom on cell south showcase. Whenever I turn on hot spot, I lose my data connection. Devices are able to connect to my phone no problem, but obviously internet not working for those devices.
Wireless tether works fine, but it is only for one device and uses wep instead of wpa.
Anyone had any success with this?

I have same rom and phone and mine does this also. But wireless tether does work so no biggie.

Yeah, was just hoping to get better encryption and ability to let more than one person connect.

Any advice on improving WI-FI calling.

Any advice on improving WI-FI calling.

WI-FI connects and every thing
WI-FI related works great except WI-FI calling. I have the router in the middle of house. The call connection is fine at first then it acts like when a cordless phones go out of range static and echo.

I use WiFi calling all day without this issue. You might try telling your router to use a different channel, and/or looking for sources of interference.
That sounds more like internet connection quality to me.
I would try making sure nobody is running torrents or other high bandwidth stuff at the same time.
I had no issues with WIFI Calling on CM7. I recently switched back to the stock rom and have had jitter issues and poor sound quality. Hope this helps.

+1.. get the free wifi analyzer app.. then switch your router to the channel with the least interference.
I try that on my next day off.

What version is your wifi calling app?
Hope this helps.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
In the WiFi Calling app settings, check under Connection Preferences to be sure you have WiFi preferred for calling selected, just in case something changed it. Also, in the setting area, maybe under advanced, there is a menu option for log errors. That might help point to the problem and a solution.
Problem with wifi calling
I have a LG G2x 2.3.3 (rooted) running Xboarder's Stock Tweaked OTA Gingerbread build v1.2.2 and faux123 kernel (thank you great work) just have one problem that I have not been able to solve or find on here, my wifi calling will open and say enabling and stays that way (will not connect to wifi calling) any suggestions?

I had the same problem when I was on stock rom. Once I updated the baseband and flashed a custom rom, I dont have that problem anymore.

Is it just me or does the shift have bad WiFi Range??

On my evo i had twice the range my shift does. Idk if their is a booster to increase the range but its horrid. i have to be with in 15 feet of the router in order to actually get wifi which is stupid.
I dont think its my wifi router cause the settings are all the same as they were before when i had my evo.
I get great range.
I have great range on mine. All the way to the backyard outside. Couple of things to check are, make sure your router isn't sitting on the floor. Also make sure there's not a bunch of stuff blocking the router ( like in front of it or around it ) . When I moved all the crap that was in front of my router. Then raised up onto a shelf, the range at which I could get signal from it increased dramatically.
Personally I think i my old hero had better wifi range than my shift. With my Shift im lucky to get one bar in my bedroom, but with my Hero i had 2 bars in the same spot.
Go to wifi settings -> menu -> advanced -> regulatory domain -> 14 channels -> wifi sleep policy -> never
Shift has 802.11n 2.4ghz. If you're still having problems run Wifi Analyzer and figure out your local network problems.
Shift does Wifi fine.

I am running Synergy Rom, and i also clicked the Best WiFi Performance and turned it on.
Ok well i turned on the best performance and that didnt even increase the range.. the range still still sucks on this thing. but the speed when im actually AT my wireless router (so much for being wireless if im stuck with in 5 feet of it ) is pretty darn fast.

Sounds like its your router or a problem with your ISP. You should for sure be able to connect further than 5 ft away. I would Download WiFi analyzer like VICODAN suggested.

I did download that app but what am i suppose to do with it. The signal feed is total jumped high for a few secs but half the time even with 5 feet away it was very low on the bottom two bars of it. Is there a way to increase the range that my linksys cisco router gives off. Its not a cheaper router either i think i spent $150 on it like a couple months ago. Im gonna try a new rom, any suggestions as to picking CM7 or nightlies for better wifi cause i prefer wifi over crappy 3G anyday. Im currently on supremesense v5 but I just dont like the drop down notification bar in other roms, i like the sense version more.

Cm7 are good roms, I would recommend synergy ROM if you like sense. I was having connection problems while I ran supreme sense v5 the other day, and with mikeshifted g, but no problems with synergy ROM.

I will give it a shot. so far i like the evo shift more in some aspects but this wifi thing on any rom is just dreadful... and its not just my Wireless router. its at my friends house too.
I upgraded from the HTC hero and I had way WiFi better signal on it than on my shift but personally I like the shift over and phone Sprint offers right now. But back on subject you could go to Sprint and let them look at it and see if anything wrong but they would probably just blame it on being rooted.

Wifi wonkiness and maybe smartactions?(solved)

So at first wifi seemed good, range is better than my epic, speeds good as well(throughput anyways) but I've noticed a lot of disconnecting lately and having to toggle my wifi on and off to connect a lot. I'm not sure on this next part but I believe it all started when enable smartaction features. I tried toggling, dhcp versus auto, no difference. I'm thinking that maybe there is a cache somewhere in the driver that is not clearing properly creating network handshake issues, but that is a speculated thought based on very little knowledge. A little extra info, I have experienced this on both my dual band wifi N netgear at home, and a single band wifi G netgear at work, I'm stock no root(yet). I am semi noob when it comes to networking but I do have enough knowledge to setup securely a wifi network and do basic troubleshooting. Any thoughts on this? I am gonna try disabling all smartactions as well and see what fruitation arrives from that.

i had the same problem. What i did was change my wireless channel.
Almost 9 hours and no wonkiness after disabling smartactions. Ill report further in the future

lol, don't think it was necessary to go to those lengths... Just disable any SmartActions is the suggestion.
I have a few night time / low battery smart actions - and I guess I never really use wifi during those periods. During the day when I do use wifi and the smart actions are not in use, I don't have any wifi issues.
Interesting theory for sure, especially since it is a new and perhaps only partially tested Motorola product. Would be nice if this is a workaround, at least there's something to look into .
I don't think it has anything to do with Smartactions....the couple of times I've experienced Wi-fi disconnects I never had any of those running. It seems to be more of a seemingly distance/threshold sort of thing to me.

I've never really experienced any disconnects that I couldn't attribute to distance...
Some here have said that wifi disconnects within feet of the router and VERY frequently. I can't say I've ever experienced that on this device...
My wifi issues were definately not range based, but I have yet to experience the issues I was having before since disabling the smart actions, but I will play around with renabling when I have some time and see if I can narrow it down, I have a feeling it was the sleep profile and I'm pretty sure I left it at defaults other than times.

Through the STOCK phone dialer put in ##106157#. It will reset a lot of wonkiness and do another hands free activation, updating ports, PRL, etc on a level more in-depth than the System Updates option.

Not related to smart actions, but maddening nonetheless...
Go to "Settings" --> "Wifi" --> "Menu" (Bottom right) --> "Advanced" --> "Show Reminders" - uncheck.

Tethering drops solved

I don't know if this has been documented before so I figured I should share. I've been tethering a new Nexus 7 to my tbolt the last fee days and was having constant data (not tethering) drops on the tbolt while doing so. Then data would not come back untill I restarted the bolt. Toggeling airplane mode or data doesn't work. But I just had an idea to turn off the bolts autosync setting while using the tether and it seems to be much more reliable. In fact I didnt get a drop untill I hopped on the bolt to come here and type this up. Somehow, uncharacteristically it came back on its own. Which makes me wonder if any kind of communication (on the bolt) will break the data while tethering.
Tshed 1.6, .19 radio
Another thingI notice a problem, when I turn tethering off on the bolt it usually causes all data to drop then also.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda app-developers app
Have you tried any different radios? I've always got pretty frequent data drops with CM roms, at least if using the built in hotspot. Do you use wi-fi tether?
Well in general data "cycles" because that's how other carriers bill for tethering. It's literally a different connection to Verizon, a different 3G/4G if you will.
Have you given Barnacle a try? It doesn't refresh the mobile data connection.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
No I haven't tried diff radios. I did try Wifi Tether and it appears to simply attach itself to thundersheds built in tether. I apparently had some settings wrong and it would keep dropping. So I tried switching to he built in and the drops continued. Then I uninstalled wifi tether and after that the built in worked just fine. Minus the data drops. I didn't mention though that when tethering the nexus 7 the drops were constant, when tethering a laptop the drops were far more infrequent.
