Wifi wonkiness and maybe smartactions?(solved) - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

So at first wifi seemed good, range is better than my epic, speeds good as well(throughput anyways) but I've noticed a lot of disconnecting lately and having to toggle my wifi on and off to connect a lot. I'm not sure on this next part but I believe it all started when enable smartaction features. I tried toggling, dhcp versus auto, no difference. I'm thinking that maybe there is a cache somewhere in the driver that is not clearing properly creating network handshake issues, but that is a speculated thought based on very little knowledge. A little extra info, I have experienced this on both my dual band wifi N netgear at home, and a single band wifi G netgear at work, I'm stock no root(yet). I am semi noob when it comes to networking but I do have enough knowledge to setup securely a wifi network and do basic troubleshooting. Any thoughts on this? I am gonna try disabling all smartactions as well and see what fruitation arrives from that.

i had the same problem. What i did was change my wireless channel.

Almost 9 hours and no wonkiness after disabling smartactions. Ill report further in the future

I definately think that smart actions was causing funkiness, still no issues after 24 hours now with smart actions disabled.

When you disabled SmartActions did you use titanium backup or just disabled your SmartActions?

I've experienced this issue since I've had the Photon Q. I used es file explorer to delete all the Motorola smart action apks in system/app. Will report back to see if it helps.

lol, don't think it was necessary to go to those lengths... Just disable any SmartActions is the suggestion.
I have a few night time / low battery smart actions - and I guess I never really use wifi during those periods. During the day when I do use wifi and the smart actions are not in use, I don't have any wifi issues.
Interesting theory for sure, especially since it is a new and perhaps only partially tested Motorola product. Would be nice if this is a workaround, at least there's something to look into .

I don't think it has anything to do with Smartactions....the couple of times I've experienced Wi-fi disconnects I never had any of those running. It seems to be more of a seemingly distance/threshold sort of thing to me.

I've never really experienced any disconnects that I couldn't attribute to distance...
Some here have said that wifi disconnects within feet of the router and VERY frequently. I can't say I've ever experienced that on this device...

My wifi issues were definately not range based, but I have yet to experience the issues I was having before since disabling the smart actions, but I will play around with renabling when I have some time and see if I can narrow it down, I have a feeling it was the sleep profile and I'm pretty sure I left it at defaults other than times.

Through the STOCK phone dialer put in ##106157#. It will reset a lot of wonkiness and do another hands free activation, updating ports, PRL, etc on a level more in-depth than the System Updates option.

I might just have to try this. Couldn't hurt right?

I'm having an issue where the WiFi is off but it keeps asking if I want to connect to access points at random intervals.

Not related to smart actions, but maddening nonetheless...
Go to "Settings" --> "Wifi" --> "Menu" (Bottom right) --> "Advanced" --> "Show Reminders" - uncheck.

Wi-Fi issues remain after the Gingerbread update...:-(
When I connect to a wireless network and try to stream or upload something my phone starts to lag. Now I cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network and have to reboot my phone. This is the exact behavior before the update...nothing has been fixed in this release ... I sure hope LG fixes the issues before T-Mobile pushes the OTA.

Personally never had this problem. I would revert back to stock and try and get a replacement phone.
This is my third replacement and all of them had this issue. It would work fine for a while and then it would start acting up...

really 3 replacements with that same problem? idk maybe its ur wifi at your house?
It is not my wi-fi, the phone does it on other networks and I've used my wi-fi with other devices-no issues...

I had wifi problems.....until I switched to cynogenmod.
I was about to get a sensation, but cannot consider giving up the benifits of cynogenmod. The additional features it adds, although small, all add up to a much better user experience, not to mention that it fixes the phone.

Which security type are you using on your WIFI? Maybe it's an issue with that specific protocol. Try changing the protocol back and forth for test purposes. It's possible it's one of the newer types of security and they really just aren't aware of a problem yet.
Also double check the firmware for your device. I understand that you say you've had it on other wifi and other devices work fine on your wifi, but I've had XBox's and computers that had problems with the firmware I was running but other devices worked fine.
I had the same stuttering problems as you using wifi with stock Froyo. The phone was close to unusable when streaming or downloading anything. Most of the time if wouldn't even switch from 4G to wif which was more annoyingi. With the gingerbread update wifi has dramatically improved and the switching is well under 10secs. Cm7 or anything based on it never worked for my wifi network sadly.
I have this very same problem. Turning on wifi I would still see the 4G icon and data activity. This has got to be so annoying after upgrading to gingerbread. Also now I have a new issue with the browser. This is issue is when the screen locks then unlocks the browser would automatically go back to the previous page. I mean why so many issues with this phone?

[Q] Wireless Access Point Switching

If this has been asked and answered, I apologize. Can't figure what to search for to find it.
I have a multi-story house and one wifi access point simply doesn't cover it all. I've wired up one for upstairs and one for downstairs. One of the two has DHCP enabled. Both have identical SSIDs and security. I do not know to change BSSIDs (some kinda hidden SSID?) Have tried setting both to same channel and to different channels - currently on 7 and 11.
My charge will not automatically switch between them. Under EE4 I could turn off wireless and when I turned it back on it'd connect to the stronger signal. Under all the gingerbread builds it connects to one and even after turning wireless on and off it connects to the original one. Under GB I can only switch between them using Wiifi Analyzer's connect feature. Under GB I've taken to setting up the SSIDs to different values so I can at least manually switch between them in settings. This is a royal pain as I walk between the two floors all the time.
What am I doing wrong? Doesn't anyone else have this problem?
Instead of multiple routers, try using wireless repeaters or extenders. A repeater picks up a wifi signal and rebroadcasts it for better reception. A network extender has an ethernet port that connects to your router and makes an access point without making a new network.

I prefer dd wrt routers using WDS. There are lots of resources about this. Or just buy a some access points. I find that repeaters have interference issues.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Well, actually my second router is currently setup in firmware to be an access point.
Have either of you guys observed a Charge w/ GB actually handing off correctly? If so, at least I'd know that it's my setup.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
A repeater is the best solution? The upstairs location just barely picks up the wifi from downstairs. Seems like you'd lose a lot of thruput that way.

Tried the app "Wifi Manager"? It might help you. There a bunch others. I would try them all out to see if they help your situation.
WiFi Jumper fixed this problem for me. Well worth the money.

Seems like a nifty utility. Easier than setting up WDS, but I still think that WDS is the bees knees when it comes to having rock-solid wifi everywhere you want.

Dropping wifi

For some reason my wifes infuse always drops wifi. I tried a new router, three new roms, four new phone modems to nothing. My xperia arc can keep wifi all day. I am aware of the wifi issue but this doesn't make sense. Any help would be great.

Try Going to wifi settings and press the menu button, click advanced and set the wifi sleep policy to never.
turn off your juice defender like app if you have one running

What are you running? Stock or custom rom?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
On stock 2.3.6 I had no issues with wifi dropping, but when I switched to a several custom ROMs, wifi would connect and disconnect every minute or so. I figured it wasn't my router, because it worked perfectly prior to flashing a custom ROM. It was driving me crazy, and I read through every post I could find and finally found a solution that worked for me. I still don't know why it works, but it does.
I had my router configured to assign static IP addresses for each device based on MAC address. The DHCP reservation expiration was always set to Never for each device. As I said, this worked fine for stock 2.3.6 (and also for Froyo previously). When I flashed either Zeus or Numas, the wifi drop and connect loop would start immediately. I changed the DHCP reservation expiration to something other than Never and to my surprise, wifi stayed connected.
So if your router is filtering by MAC address OR if you are not using a static IP connection on your phone's network settings, it might be worth a try, worked for me. I am currently running Zeus 5.2 and wifi is staying connected.
Wifi dropping due to custom rom flashing is not due to custom rom.
It is due to improper wiping.
A thoroughly clean wipe to make sure there is no residue of previous ROM will solve your wifi issues.
lol..I think I've posted about this just about in every thread at one point or another.
Look around
I have tried every rom on this site...never had a wifi problem dropping or connecting....wait I did once ...cuz I didn't toggle my wifi connection.... lol
But honestly stock or custom...always connections stable and stong...I do reboot both modem & wireless router from time to time....IMO refreshes the signals...
Now Apn...that's a different topic...I keep apn backup for that on file...

Actually, on Zeus my wifi drops all the time. Not when I'm using it... that never happens. But whenever it locks, it drops almost everytime... I don't know for when, or how long, but after I turn my phone back on, then it starts to reconnect... It kind of sucks.. the data at my house is... very.. EH.. 1 bar of 3.5g kind of... But.. it does ALWAYS stay connected. So there.

Sometimes wifi tethering is inconsistent for me too. I usually try switching profiles between generic ics to galaxy nexus cdma/lte.
Also lately I've been using the widget to switch on and off tethering rather than opening up the app and so far its been working more consistently

NFC to change wifi calling preferences?

I have been trying to find a way to program a nfc tag to switch my wifi calling preferences to wifi when I am inside a building. I am on stock ics, rooted. I have Tasker, but it might be out of my league...
I looked in the nfc section, now I would like to ask my fellow blaze owners if anyone may have a solution.

NFC App for Wi-fi Calling
I'm not sure if we have different problem for the same solution but what I'm trying to do is to tap the NFC chip with my phone to turn on Wi-fi calling when I enter an area, especially in a low to no reception building.
Obviously, I am connected to the Wi-fi of that building so that solves my reception issue for my phone.
