Has anyone else noticed the large amount of ghosting the Xoom display has? Its very prevalent to me, especially when a red or black object moves across the screen (red angry bird (especially when zoomed in), red icon on homescreen while scrolling (pew pew), black bars between gallery images, etc).
Its bothering me to the point of returning it (and looks like I'll have to eat the 15%/$90 restocking fee at Amazon). I'm wondering if the Asus Eee Pad Transformer or Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9/10.1 will have a better response rate. I know they both should have a better viewing angle with their IPS displays.
I have an ISF certificate and don't see any ghosting...
Really? Could it be I have a defective unit. I just find it hard to believe I would be the only one to have/see this.
Listen enable flash, then open this site on your xoom try to go full screen and tell me your findings.

Btw I have ghosting as well, but never noticed it on before. Thanks for the heads up. Ill reply back when I get more info.
I have no ghosting at all on my nexus one, the screen size have a huge effect on ghosting btw, but just an fyi.
2 Days ago I've been playing DoodleJump on the Xoom, and noticed the game running faster (you can test this) ofcourse you'll have to be familiar with the usual pace of it on the phone version of the game.
I've suspected the frame rate per second to be higher on the Xoom than the Nexus one...which could also be factored in, in refresh rate and then added to the whole performance. Which could spark problems like the ghosting we are seeing.(if you ever tried emulating a PXS on a PC you'll know what I mean)
I know that the screen response time could be a major factor but I couldn't get any information regarding the specifics of this screen. (btw you could be holding two Xooms with different screens)
So my guess for now, is the problem is with the refresh rate on the screen or the way the JIT compiler emulates...which could be solved with an update or a software tweak. Take what I said about the software side of this with a grin of salt
wow horrendous ghosting!!!!! (Using the ghosting test above)
Bumping this thread. Just noticed this on my xoom! Is it normal?
Another test : try going to http://tinyurl.com/xoghost and watch the drumsets at the bottom of the page and the guy in the second last row of second page ghost when you scroll the pages up and down.
Sorry... just saw the responses to the thread. For some reason my email notifications were off.
I ended up returning my Xoom to Amazon while still in the 30 day window so I can't do any further testing. One of the primary reasons for returning was due to the screen ghosting (and overall screen quality). I've also got my eye on the Asus transformer with the IPS display, but it keeps getting delayed. I might just wait until fall reign the next wave of tablets come out... maybe something with a tegra 3

I'm also seeing quite a bit of ghosting. Is this typical for xoom users?

It would seem so, It's absloutely terrible using the ghosting test linked. I'm getting a ghost the length of the actual cube trailing on my screen, in full screen. =/
ASUS Transformer doesnt suffer that much with the links you posted.
There are two different panels for xooms, one being AU optronics brand (typically sited as the cheap/crappy display) and the Sharp brand display which is supposed to be better.
I have the AU Optronics display and going to the ghosting URL linked previously I get terrible ghosting.
Can anyone with the sharp display test this and see what they see?
You can determine the display type by typing dmesg into a term emulator.
Sharp panels say: 'lcd_manfid=SHP'
AU panels say: 'lcd_manfid=AUO'
Now since dmesg is the kernal ring buffer you might need to reboot before you see it in your dmesg output.

I'm not surprised by the ghosting on these displays. Every mobile device I've owned has ghosted horribly. Even a lot of monitors around the office do it, but people don't seem to notice or care. I've always used 2ms displays at my home setup because of this. That being said, I paid about twice what other displays of similar size cost. People don't want to see the price of their precious electronics going up without seeing more nice specs on the list. A low response time display won't sell as well as a faster CPU or RAM... If you find a market that is looking at those 2 specs then make them great. Cheap out on the rest.
Actually this ghosting effect is due to the speed at which the pixels can change from one color to another. Some displays have issues with different color transitions.
This is something that doesn't happen on my nexus ones amoled display. And most of my monitors that I have also don't have this issue, at least to the degree of the xoom. It is disappointing to see how cheap the xoom display is.
I bet my droidx doesn't suffer from this either.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I began to notice ghosting on the screen, especially on the desktop after I upgraded to 3.2 Honeycomb.
If anyone can test whether the effect exists in 3.0 and 3.2, I appreciate it.

Yes, there's some ghosting, but so what? What does it actually affect? I haven't found any effect whatsoever.
Doesn't bother me. Just posting my findings.

I just think this ghosting thing is not a big deal.
Hey guys,
I am returning my tablet for the 2nd time to amazon as it has severe light bleeding and the sound is seriously messed up because the bezel slipped. I was originally just going to get another transformer, but now I'm thinking, should I wait for the next generation of tablets? Like asus' kal-el tablet? Or should I just get a replacement then sell this when the next generation comes out and buy one of those. I don't really need the tablet for anything and the numerous little problems and bugs really annoy me.
Thanks for your advice!
I'm actually having the same thoughts... :/ this is my second one as well and it is giving me the same light bleed issues. Should I try again for another one? Or just return it...?
I think if moderate light bleed is your only problem, think carefully about returning it. I'm returning mine cause I cant listen to audio with headphones. But the newest batch (B06) has supposedly fixed light bleed problems
Mine is a b06 and has a minor light bleed. Nothing important.
What is your serial numbers first 3 digits.

It is B40
Silly xda charachter requirement
If you have the ability to get a refund I would suggest you do it. I am seriously disappointing with mine but unfortunately I cannot get a refund, only an exchange.
My honest feeling over the past few years is that the technology is just not there. It isn't ever going to be flawless I understand as I work in software but some of these issues just seem to be poor QC or just cheap parts. The screen issue sucks and I don't think ASUS has done anything to fix it.
My buddies Samsung seems flawless and I wish I could get one of those but in general Android for Tabs still has a way to go. If you don't need one, I would wait for future generations but it will always be an issue pushing functionality that is cool but just not quite there.
I am unable to find a b60 one...this is my second one and both are b40 and have light bleed all over the bottom and left. I wouldn't mind one little light bleed but I have a few little ones that are annoying when I am in the dark... sigh. Will these light bleeds get worse over time if I don't return it for a perfect one or will it stay like this? Whatdobyou guys think?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
My B60 has some bad light bleeds and its my second from amazon. So im in the same refund or replacement boat.
Got 3rd unit(replacement) yesterday from amazon and I can say the light bleeds are very minimal and the internet seems much faster. But I have noticed a bright spot on the screen with lighter colors. Cant asus make unit without problems.
I have a Galaxy Nexus Unlocked, which I love. All is or looked fine
I was in the hospital next to my friend in bed, visiting him, then looking at his MLB AT Bat ap and noticed the black was blacker and then went to Facebook and the blue was brighter. Mine was lighter, whiter, and not as bright blue
I went home and called Galaxy Nexus, the guy said it could be cause he had his brightness up high MIne is on 45. He is older and had no idea how to say what it was on when I got home.
So I wait til tomorrow, but my guess, since turning my brightness up to 60, 80, and 100 is that it didn't make a difference.
Can someone explain? Might the screen be defective
I ask because I am getting the S3 next week and read somewhere that there is either a brown screen, or a grayish one, or one with specs -- TO CHECK BEFORE I LEAVE THE STORE
So, again, thank you
-might you tell me if you think my display may be defective
-what and how exactly do i check something before leaving the store?
Thanks so much
p.s.
dont know how the price thing will work with Tmo, but would you recommend the 10.1 Tab clearly over the T-mobile Sidestreak? Or is it like comparing apples to oranges. In which case, are either of those bad?
Hi guys,
I need an urgent check with you guys about the TF700's screen. Yesterday I visited my friend's house and he happened to have a Galaxy Note 10.1. When we did a side by side comparison between the 2 tablets' screens, I suddenly realize that my TF700's screen is a bit yellowish, which is really noticeable when displaying any white background (white colour on the Note 10.1 is really pure white and colours seem to have better contrast). Are all tf700's screens yellowish or is it just my tablet? I still have 2 days left for 1-for-1 exchange with the shop I bought my tf700 from, after that I would need to route all my warranty requests to ASUS instead.
So far I am really happy with my tf700, the screen is the only concern that I have. Please let me know your opinions. Is exchanging for another set the solution?
Thanks/
Funny, because I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 (yes, not the same comparison but it's the only Samsung product I own) and noticed that it's screen seems to be too blue when held next to my ASUS TF700. It's more of a cool blue, like the "temp" settings you see on some monitors. Those monitors have a "warm" setting for red tones, "medium" for even tones and "cool" for blue tones. The cool blue makes pages appear to be whiter and I wonder if that's what Samsung does with all of their LCD screens? When I hold my phone next to my tablets neither of the screens appear to be a perfect shade of white, but once I move them apart they're both fine.
If it's really bothering you try increasing the brightness setting and turn Auto Brightness off, a dim screen might be causing this yellowish color you see.
I don't think this is a problem, unless you plan on sitting next to your friends Note 10.1 while using your TF700 Seriously though, if you placed your tablets screen next to the various other tablets on the market you'd see that a lot of screens have color/hue/temp differences. Now, if you placed it next to another TF700 and the yellowish color was still noticeable, well then you might have an issue. Other than that I wouldn't worry about it.
The Infinity does have a yellow hint to it. its all tablets not just you. a number of YouTube reviews (ex mobiletech tech review) have discussed it. in fact its believed that infinity has less of a colour bias while ipad and other tabs tend to have a blue tint. its not noticeable on the infinity unless you compare it side by side to another make.

I can see what you are saying. The problem with super AMOLED Plus in your Galaxy S2 is that Samsung has deliberately set the screen to be bluish, so that the colours will really pop. As far as I can tell, the S3 and Note 10.1 have managed to fix this problem, providing better colour reproduction than any previous products from Samsung. If I am not wrong, if you compare your S2 with the Note 10.1 side by side, you will see that the Note 10.1's screen to be more realistic in term of colours.
Nevertheless, thanks for your answer. I guess I should be happy with my tf700.

Thanks for pointing me to the right direction, I will give mobile tech review a look.
I am going to buy this tablet very soon but i heard from some people that there are some problems with it like lines flickering over screen and creaking bezels is this true or is it already fixed?
Both of those issues are still present. Black lines are still there and bezel creaks on every one of the units I have seen.

Yes it is still present but those are actually EXTREMELY minor issues. Every electronic you buy will have something wrong with it. If its not when you buy it then probably later on. Why it is suggested to not unlock your tab for 2-3 months to make sure its working correctly.

Me thinks that you have an issue with the TF700
Oh how dreadful, the case creaks... Have you ever held an sgs3 or a galaxy tab2? Sounds more like a lousy horror flick.
You're obviously no gamer, or you'd know well enough the black lines are a vsync screentearing problem, and they happen with every app not designed to handle the device's higher resolution and refresh rate. Blame the devs, not the device. (face it, no other device has this high resolution, and the one that (nexus) does has people complaining about the same bloody thing.)

Not really - vsync-related screen tearing does not cause black lines and also is only visible with movement (especially horizontal movement). This effect appears on static images.
After a lot of research, my current theory about the black lines is that for some yet unknown reason the display controller is blocked from reading the framebuffer for a short time. Since the DC needs to refresh the panel 60 times per second, it must be able to continuously stream data from the framebuffer RAM to the display.
At 1920*1200 with a pixel clock of 154 MHz, the line rate is about 74 kHz - so shutting off the DC's RAM access for only 1/74000 second would cause a full black scanline.

For what it's worth, here's my anecdotal evidence having owned an Infinity since November:
- No black lines whatsoever. But I do *rarely* get some flickering (the whole screen seems to bounce left and right) that only lasts a split second. Some apps *do* get the occasional graphics glitch, such as non-textured polygons. Overall, it's nothing I ever think about and doesn't detract me from the tablet one bit.
- Don't know what you mean by creaking bezels - all around the screen? Or just the dock connection? I don't have any creaking. The dock connection does feel "looser" than in the beginning, but it never changes position. The tablet is heavy enough that you can easily cause it to tumble backward when docked, but if left alone it never falls back. I prefer the light weight of the tablet+dock to a solution with a heavier dock.
Overall I'm very very happy with this tablet. My only gripe is the office suites aren't perfect MS Office replacements (yet? ). Other than that I've been using it LOCKED and ROOTED on stock 4.2.1 for web browsing, laptop replacement (Word/PDF viewing and editing), gaming and e-book reader without major issues.
As I said in the beginning, this is purely anecdotal since I don't know anyone else who owns this tablet. Hope it helps!
