I have a problem which is .bat files open with notepad instead of running in cmd.
Without being able to solve it I decided to factory reset the surface, thinking that must fix it, but somehow the default program is still notepad!! Has anyone else experienced this?
If anyone could go to control panel, then search for 'extension' and click on the option for associating programs with file extensions then scroll down to .bat and tell me what the option is under default program I'd appreciate it, from my knowledge it should read 'Unknown'
If anyone can think of anyways for fixing this minor annoyance I'd be greatful
Cheers

Don't have my surface with me, but the easy way to change what program opens a file is to right click on the file in windows explorer, click on "Open With..." and choose the program. In this case I would choose command.exe. If that doesn't work, try renaming your file to a .cmd extension and see if it is executable then. I don't know if batch files are executable in WinRT so you might be banging your head against a wall.
.CMD files definitely work as expected (and .CMD is a super-set of .BAT). If you want .BAT to be treated like .CMD, that's pretty easy to do using any of the following tools (approximately ascending order of user-friendliness):
Manual registry editing.
Command-line tools "assoc" and "ftype".
The "Set associations" control panel (open Explorer, then paste "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations" into the address bar).
Right-Click the file -> Open With -> Choose Default Program.

I figured they must be as the jailbreak tool uses a .bat file. I've tried changing the default program but the cmd doesn't come up in the list of programs so I navigated to where the .exe is stored but when I click on it it sais something along the lines the program is not able to open that type of file...which is bs. Yes remaining the extension does work it's what I've been doing I'm just curios to know why the batch file doesn't want to run. Cheers

Might seem like a duh moment: did you disable hide known file type extensions in file view options? The easiest mistake is naming a .txt file test.bat but actually finding out the name is test.bat.txt.

Verified .bat files work fine on surface.

Heh, I didn't even think about that... my Surface came with that option already disabled by the time I logged in, because I had previously disabled it on a Win8 laptop using the same MS account.
Yeah definitely renamed the extension properly. Im going to try creating a new local account and see how that deals with bat files
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
So I changed the account on my surface from a Microsoft account to a local one and .bat files are executing as they are expected to!!
How the hell is my Microsoft account changing the default action of .bat files? Puzzling

Hi to all. First of all, I've tried to search but I got to ask since I can't find this topic anywhere.
Ok. Does anybody know how I can open a file with the extension *.txt with my preferred program? When I click directly on the filename, the text is opened in Word Mobile. I would like to just click the filename and don't open my application before I can edit my file. I'm using another application that I prefer for editing my txt files. All suggestions are welcome
use total commander to associate file extensions with programs if your pref
or do it manually using a reg-editor
Thanks for the reply. But if I associate from TC, it still open with MW when I start any txt file from todayscreen, (from within PocketPlus). I suppose that using the TC only work when you open from TC? So I'll try to use a reg.edit. and see what happens. Thanks again.
you can use Schap's Advanced Configuation and change file associations..
I've tried Adv Conf 3.3, but still the Mobile Word opens my txt files
what do you use to open them? you might have specific file associations in your file browser.
what about resco explorer? it works to fix this problem in my device
I prefer the NeboPad, and the registry sais that my txt files should be opened with NeboPad. It seems that MS override this, during the copyright
this is impossible. assiciations are set via OS.. if you set a specific association in Adv Config.. it'll work for the OS unless you're using a file manager that opens using its own preferences. try another file explorer like Resco
I'm running it from Spb Pocket Plus and not from any file explorer. In the Advanced Configuration 3.3 it's stated that file with the extension of *.txt, should be opened with \Program Files\NeboPad\NeboPad.exe. But still it's opened with Mobile Word. I think I'll have to go back to Notes with the *.pwi extension. Anyway, thank's for trying.
Regards
if you use notes and it works thru Spb Pocket Plus it means that this NeboPad is the problem, not your association.

Well. I've tried a lot of editors and pad programs by this time, but every time I try to open a TXT file, it comes up in PWORD. This must be something in the OS itself I belive. Or has anyone managed it to work?
At last!
Finally I've found a program that's works. It's MobilePad (nice too).

I read through the instructions here on how to increase the allowed tabs in Opera from just the default 2 tabs. Everytime I increase the tabs in the user preferences, I hit save, and reboot the phone.. and voila - back to 2 tabs.
any advice here?

I'm on a VZ TP2 as well. I finally got it to work after trying it several times. I have no idea why, but it finally "stuck".

lucky you!
I had the same problem where the changes wouldn't stick after making the changes via the 'config: opera' page. I think there's an opera.ini file that you can edit that'll force the change. May require a restart of your phone once you edit the file.
There is also another way to do it. This is for the Sprint version, but I'm pretty sure it works for all TP2s. To manually do it follow the following instructions:
First get a program like Total Commander so you can edit files in the Windows folder of your phone. Open TC and navigate to Windows > Opera9 > and then locate the file named opera.ini . Rename the name of the file to opera.txt and then use file explorer the open the file.
Navigate towards the end of the document, and there should be some text that says something like "Max Number of Tabs = 2" Change the 2 to a 5 (5 is the max number of tabs) and save the file.
Then go back in TC and rename the file back to opera.ini and reset your phone. Open up Opera and now you can have 5 tabs
Hi guys!
This is a quick tool I jotted together for myself in the past couple days and found it very useful. So I decided to clean it up and share it. Hope you will like it! Do comment and ask!
APK Batch Rename Tool
* for Windows and Linux for now.
APK Batch Rename Tool recursively crawls input folder and all of its subfolders looking for Android Package files (.apk's). It reads Label and Version info from apk's found and creates a copy for each apk under the output folder but using the Label and Version info acquired.
For example a com.example.hw.apk will make Hello World! 1.21.apk provided that the label inside the package was set to Hello World! and version is 1.21.
The old and the new apk files are 100% the same in terms of content and are unchanged. Only the new copies are given new filenames. Input files are left completely intact.
Why?
Have you ever wondered what are your 1500+ apk files with wierd names nested to different wierd folders on your harddrive? Have you ever wanted to find an app but you were unable to because it had some undescriptive javaish name that made no sense reflected no version and your apps were swept across a hundred junk folders anyway? Then APK Batch Rename is the tool for you! And me!
APK Batch Rename will set a human readable name for all your Android apps, and drop such a copy into a folder. You will finally be able to browse them, sort them alphabetically and be able to pick from versions available.
How?
1. Copy all your apk files (or folders with apk files in them) into the input folder. You may copy folders of any depth. APK Batch Rename Tool will recurse all subfolders of the input folder anyway.
2. Hit or click ApkBatchRename.bat . (For Linux users it's: apkbatchrename, or on a terminal enter: ./apkbatchrename ) Wait until it finishes the job.
3. Find your freshly named files in the output folder.
Simple as that!
Have fun! & Comment!

Folks,

I'll definitely use your script but with a small change to show the package name as well as its valuable for when you need to uninstall the package.
i.e label_packagename(version).apk -> Talk_com.google.android.talk(1.3).apk
Attached a slightly modified batch file and screenshot
For single file one-off renames (right-click->open with->rename single) you can use the script here.
De jo! Honfitars. Hajra Magyarok!
Customizable naming planned in future version

Hi Britoso,
Yeah! That's a neat way to do it too!
Eventually I want to make naming and spacing fully customizable! Including what attributes to pick (name, label, versionName) to constitute the filename, and what separators (_,-,(,),space) should go where.
In the howto.txt I have a little road-map for the project. Will add customizable naming too.
Will keep you guys posted.

Ps: Anyone who has another naming suggestion drop a post! I'd be interested.
great job...bravo..
thanks
Very nice tool, thanks for sharing this .
Using it with britoso's edited script.
Edit: I would appreciate it if a log of the conversion would be saved in a \logs\ subfolder, so I can check which files were not converted properly and see if I have to do those manually.
Handy ! Thanks...

For one-off renames you can use the below batch file.
1) create the below batch file in the same folder as apkrename.bat (its attached too)
Name: rename-single.bat (change this if you want)
content:
Code:
cd "C:\change_me\ApkRename\"
apkrename.bat %1 %~dp1
Change the path(change_me) as needed.
2)Associate it with apks by right clicking on the apk and choosing "choose default program", browse and select the batch file "rename-single.bat".
Uncheck "make this the default operation"
Screenshot and batch file attached. Enjoy.
update:
-12/8 uploaded a new version that fixed a bug involving long path names with spaces.
Also added a check for success and then delete the original apk. (backup your apks just in case).
Remember to set the path to the ApkRename folder in rename_single.bat once before using it.
Really gd job )

Hi luvgirl12345,
The Linux port is on the way & will be posted here soon!
Actually, the Windows release is running on win32 ports of a few common Linux tools. And that's so, because I am lazy. Having Linux's much better support for shell scripting plus the same tool set always at hand, porting is a breeze.
Ciao,
phsorx
Sounds very useful, thank you!
Looks nice for massive apk renaming.
Found a similar tool called APKInfo some month ago which i am using for single apk files for a while now.
But finally something for batch renaming.
Thanks
your the man!, works like a charm. Thanks!
Any plans for making an Android version of this to run on our devices?

Yes! Certainly. Its in the plans.
But firstly there are a few things to be fixed on the desktop version first. See road map section of the howto.txt file in the archive. The most burning issue is the so called overwrite issue that I want to be sorted out next. Say you have two copies of the same app (same name, label, versionName) but one of them has a patch against it (because its been modded by a reverser) than one of the copies will overwrite the other (ApkRename 1.10).
Secondly on a mobile device's SD card there is usually less space than on a desktop's hard drive. This implies that APK Renamer will actually have to rename the files in place instead of creating a copy of each in a separate folder. Or at least it will need to figure out the empty space left on the device, and if its not enough to hold the copies, it should offer in-place renaming instead. Not a lot of logic to add but still...
Having all the outstanding questions be figured out on the desktop still, will allow me to implement a more established version for the phone right from start. But hold still its not going to take very long
Bests,
phsorx
Hello,
Some of you may be familiar with a tool known as APK Multi-Tool. I sure am by now. I have recently used this program to edit an apk on my desktop, and when whatever it was doing finished, my entire desktop and it's various sub-folders were erased. I looked through my recycling bin to find nothing, and have done many searches of the exact file-names of a few of my lost files to find nothing. There was an unfathomable amount of important data there, which was deleted in one click. Help, naturally, would be appreciated.
I believe there is no possible way to cure this, seeing that my computer has been restarted various times over the past few days, (this happened about 10-20 days ago) and I would consider a system restore, where the computer restores itself to a point in time, but if the documents are not in the recycling bin, I don't believe they will come back. Is there any possible way to restore my data? Please help ASAP.
Okayyyyyy never used the tool (probably only would in a sandboxed VM after seeing this though)
Know any g forensix people?
Have you tried using a linux live stick to have a proper look at the hard drive?
Ouch, dude. Good luck.
Sent from my LT18i using XDA
If you use a file recovery tool you should be able to restore some of them, but the more you use your harddrive the greater the chances of them being overwritten.
You'll definitely want to check ASAP though.

Maybe your desktop files weren't actually deleted, just hidden? If you're using Windows 7, navigate to you desktop folder:
C:\Users\%username%\desktop
Right-click on the desktop folder and choose properties. Look at the Attributes section on the general tab and make sure that "hidden" is not checked. If it is, uncheck it.
How do I save my edited build prop? I'm on liquid smooth beta2. I can access it via astro file manager but it doesn't let me save my changes.. Any ideas on how to save them?
I tried copyright it to another folder. Editing it. It saved. But couldn't move it to my system folder.

Built in text editor in Root Explorer.
If you are asking about editing a file like that, and don't have root explorer, just go buy it because you need it, even if you have other root level file managers.
The best way to edit a build.prop is to export to a computer and do it in linux( or using notepad plus plus in windows...), but apps like Absolute System will pre-format the lines in the file for easy editing.
One of the reasons the export to pc method is the best way is because it forces you to make a backup (or at least to have two different copies of the same file on different physical devices at once - at least until you edit it the one on the pc if you didn't make another copy first)
Another reason the export to pc method is preferred for editing files like that is because you can see more of the file at once on the larger screen, and catch things you miss being restricted to a few lines in view at a time on the device. Sometimes getting a better look at the big picture can teach you a lot.
Anyways, my recommendation about buying root explorer goes well beyond just this one instance with this file, time and again it's the one rock-solid root level file explorer that just gets the job done right the first time. Always finding this or that little problem with others. YMMV.
I can export it. But its read only so I can't over write it. Root explorer didn't help my case either. Said it was read only. How do i change that.

I use Root Browser and open as a text file and just edit/add/comment out stuff and save, no hassle.

When you are in it, look at the top of the app - right above the first listed item.
Tap the "mount R/W" button, if you granted the app root access you are now writeable.
