How do I save my edited build prop? I'm on liquid smooth beta2. I can access it via astro file manager but it doesn't let me save my changes.. Any ideas on how to save them?
I tried copyright it to another folder. Editing it. It saved. But couldn't move it to my system folder.

Built in text editor in Root Explorer.
If you are asking about editing a file like that, and don't have root explorer, just go buy it because you need it, even if you have other root level file managers.
The best way to edit a build.prop is to export to a computer and do it in linux( or using notepad plus plus in windows...), but apps like Absolute System will pre-format the lines in the file for easy editing.
One of the reasons the export to pc method is the best way is because it forces you to make a backup (or at least to have two different copies of the same file on different physical devices at once - at least until you edit it the one on the pc if you didn't make another copy first)
Another reason the export to pc method is preferred for editing files like that is because you can see more of the file at once on the larger screen, and catch things you miss being restricted to a few lines in view at a time on the device. Sometimes getting a better look at the big picture can teach you a lot.
Anyways, my recommendation about buying root explorer goes well beyond just this one instance with this file, time and again it's the one rock-solid root level file explorer that just gets the job done right the first time. Always finding this or that little problem with others. YMMV.
I can export it. But its read only so I can't over write it. Root explorer didn't help my case either. Said it was read only. How do i change that.

I use Root Browser and open as a text file and just edit/add/comment out stuff and save, no hassle.

When you are in it, look at the top of the app - right above the first listed item.
Tap the "mount R/W" button, if you granted the app root access you are now writeable.

I realize everyone has their opinion about software but I was wondering if there was a good app/file management tool in the market that everyone likes or most people like. Or are these two separate applications? I plan on rooting shortly and want to get rid of the bloatware and be able to manage my files. Thanks
I like Astro File Manager, works like a charm..........
Same Here. Pro version is awesome. Free version is good too...
Root Explorer, full r/w access to the entire system, text editor, and gives you access to the /data folder that other file managers don't.
I would have to say that I have also used astro file manager since I first got my nexus one over a year ago and it is one of the first applications I download when I get a new android device. I would recommend it to anyone.

I'm going to start the root now! Thanks for the info. hopfully all goes well.
I use Astro and Root Explorer as well, both premium. I will use the root explorer to "borrow" apps from my 6 other devices to swap around with eachother.
Hi I was wondering if anyone else had this issue. The camera and gallery on CM9 are very peculiar... For one the camera app doesn't focus well and you can't tap to focus? And the gallery app is just broken. When you delete something, it comes back later. Lie if if you delete and go to check your files, it's still there. Which is brings me to my last point, what file management software is the easiest to use and navigate? I found the "My Files" from stock experience the best. Thanks

1. I've not had those issues with cm9.
2. root explorer has always been my favorite . I would highly recommend it.(very easy to use).
With the camera, tap to focus has never worked as far as I know.
As for the gallery, many people have experienced that, excluding myself. So either one of them will cone along or keep searching through all the CM9 threads. You will definitely find an abundance of posts regarding that issue.
And for file management, there's also FX File Explorer, as well as Solid Explorer.

Try Quickpic as a replacement for the Gallery, and working great with cm9

I use Just Pictures as a picture only gallery replacement.
You might want to go to manage apps. Find the gallery app and select clear data/cache. Can't remember which one it says.
You might have to setup the gallery again or wait for your pics to resync. This usually fixes weird issues. Also, fix permissions in your CWM.

I was having the exact same issue with CM9 RC2 and did a bunch of digging around in the source code to see if I could figure out what causes it. In my case, I was unable to delete images that were stored on an external SD card. Images stored on the internal SD card were deleted properly.
It turns out that when Gallery deletes images, the directory they are contained in must be in one of two environment variables that are set up at boot time: EXTERNAL_STORAGE and SECONDARY_STORAGE. CM9 RC2 sets EXTERNAL_STORAGE to /mnt/emmc and does not set SECONDARY_STORAGE. Since only /mnt/emmc is listed, files are only deleted from the internal SD card.
Modifying the environment variables is kind of a pain in the butt, since they're initialized in /init.emmc.rc, which is part of the ramdisk, which means you have to grab the boot.img, unpack it, change init.emmc.rc, then repack/flash it. In my case all I did was add an additional line that sets SECONDARY_STORAGE to /mnt/sdcard immediately after setting EXTERNAL_STORAGE. I've been running this way on my phone for about a week now without issues, deleting images from Gallery just fine.
I submitted a bug report and patch at the TeamChopsticks google code page (issue 105), but it hasn't gotten any attention yet.
I breifly searched, but couldn't find the TeamChopsticks Google Code page. If you post a link, I'd gladly support your Issue #105 because I'm experiencing it, too.

Sorry, I can't hotlink it because I'm a noob without enough posts. If you go to teamchopsticks.org, then click on Release Notes, there's a link in the first paragraph of the text on the page that will take you to their Google Code page. You should be able to find the issue from there. If you could hotlink it I would certainly appreciate it.

1) Highly recommend Root Explorer for general file management.
2) Check out the ported Sony Xperia album app for a pretty slick gallery. It's available for download and direct install in the themes & apps threads.

Is there a way to to do like on windows where you can choose to make folders/files hidden? and is there a way to gain access to all of the hdd space?
<a href=http://download.cnet.com/Free-Youtube-Downloader-Pro/3000-2071_4-75329731.html >youtube downloader</a>
If you're rooted, you can use a root privilege file explorer like Soild Explorer (I like it because it has dual panel view on tablets) to look through the fille system. There's a lot, though, so try some to find the one you'd like
To hide files, you can add a period in front of the file or folder name to make the system recognize it as hidden and then you can check the option in the file explorer to not display hidden files.
EDIT: sorry, I didn't see brandontowney's post. nvm.

Hi,
I can't seem to find out how to do this because all the search results seem to lead me to "how to use ES Explorer to view hidden files" or "how to set folder properties in windows 7."
I just want to be able to connect my phone to my pc and view the hidden directories through my PC.
Has anyone seen anything, or got any better suggestions on what I should be searching for?
I don't want to be doing this through some sort of command line interface either...
Hello,
You cannot view the internal hidden files of your phone until it is rooted, I suggest you don't do it so as it voids the warranty as also leave your phone dead if something went wrong during rooting..
Those files are hidden for a reason, reason being to save your phone from any unintended harm by you.

I'm not looking to harm, I need to change XBMC settings, and clear out the thumbnails, but can't because it's hidden away and a pain to edit on a touch screen.
So if I was to find a way to root my Android devices, I should be able to browse these hidden directories through my PC?

I am not sure if you could edit them on PC, but yeah once you root it, you could use 'SD Maid' or any other such app to clear the thumbnails and unnecessary stuff.

I don't need root for that. As per my OP it's possible in ES Explorer. But it's cumbersome and a pain in the ass to use on the touch screen. I don't want to have to go through it multiple times on several android devices, when it should be much easier to do by connecting it up to a pc.
So there's no way to do this at all? If you are just going to recommend another android app, don't bother because you are not answering the question.

If the files you wanna delete are on internal storage, then you can view them on PC via the MTP mode...

While i was trying to change mac address with apps and terminal on my samsung it didnt work.i have the new samsung A5.i have found a method to change the mac address manually on samsung but needs the following:root and a root browser(can be found in playstore.first root your phone, there are alot of methods online to do that, and download esfile explorer(the root browser).when you open esfile explorer swipe from left to the right or press something on top left to open a black window called on top fast access, on this window there is a category called tools press it and now enable "root explorer" and "show hidden files", now change the category to local and press device, now go to efs-->wifi and now youll see 2 files, .mac.cob and .mac.info , in both of these files there should be only you original mac address, open each of these files if necessary,as text then with es note editor and now press on top right and press edit, now just change the mac address of yours to your victims and save these files(but dont forget the original mac address)and get out of esfile explorer and restart the phone to take changes, then go to setting--> about device-->status and youll see that your wifi mac address have changed.this operation can be reverted by doing the same method.
