I read through the instructions here on how to increase the allowed tabs in Opera from just the default 2 tabs. Everytime I increase the tabs in the user preferences, I hit save, and reboot the phone.. and voila - back to 2 tabs.
any advice here?

I'm on a VZ TP2 as well. I finally got it to work after trying it several times. I have no idea why, but it finally "stuck".

lucky you!
I had the same problem where the changes wouldn't stick after making the changes via the 'config: opera' page. I think there's an opera.ini file that you can edit that'll force the change. May require a restart of your phone once you edit the file.
There is also another way to do it. This is for the Sprint version, but I'm pretty sure it works for all TP2s. To manually do it follow the following instructions:
First get a program like Total Commander so you can edit files in the Windows folder of your phone. Open TC and navigate to Windows > Opera9 > and then locate the file named opera.ini . Rename the name of the file to opera.txt and then use file explorer the open the file.
Navigate towards the end of the document, and there should be some text that says something like "Max Number of Tabs = 2" Change the 2 to a 5 (5 is the max number of tabs) and save the file.
Then go back in TC and rename the file back to opera.ini and reset your phone. Open up Opera and now you can have 5 tabs

I used Total Commander.
You can also transfer the css via Active Sync to the PC. Then remove the write protection and edit the file. Then save it to a different folder and copy it back to the device. That worked fine for me.

How did you get Total Commander to let you do this? I've been trying and had no luck so far. I've copied the file to a different directory on the phone and the PC, but I'm not having any luck overwriting the original file.
This is on the Cavalier though, but it shouldn't be any different.
Any help would be appreciated
Hi, In Total Commander you can switch into 2 window mode. You can copy and overwrite the css files from one windows to another. Similar as on PC.

Thanks, but I've tried that.
* I have the new CSS on my memory card.
* Have teh second window set to \Windows
* Select the new css file and go file-copy
* the "copy/move " window comes up and I hit OK
* conirmation window "overwrite: \windows\... with \storage card\..." and I hit "Overwrite"
* "Confirm" windows pops up saying "Cannot ccopy or move file!"
Is there anything I should have done first?
Do you have your Mail application switched off? Look at Task manager. Or turn Off/On phone and try it to copy again.
I've tried that, and still no go. So I need to make some security change?

Has anyone tried playing with the HTML templates to change the look entirely?
nice
Hi everyone nice tip!!!! But I have 2 question:
if u please post all the read_style files in windows cause I edited everything and I have sone problems.
Second question:
I see the 7pt in sms and email inbox but when I write a sms the font remains bigger than 7 is it possible to change the font when I write a new sms too? Thanx!

here itis the problem
This font hacks look great. Does anyone know how to shrink the fonts being used in the message list view and the folder lists? I find I can only see 4 message headers at a time on Wm6 / Q9.. Horrible use of space. Same with folders list, font is massive. I'm assuming it is one of the dozens of .css files in that windows directory.
@zipreddictive: ... edit the compose_style.(langcode).css ...
@tommytuna: ... it's impossible ... or you found a developer to write a new app for this
Hi - I edited the compose style and now the new message fonts look good to. Still can't figure out how to get the message list to tighten up. Argghh.. So useless with 4 messages at a time when you can easily get 6-7 with tightening up that screen.
I am looking for some help with "shortcuts" or ".lnk" files
I am using a HTC Tilt 8925 with WM6, but I think this may be a more universal issue.
I went into Windows > StartMenu and added several new folders, and then moved the .lnks formed from program installations into those folders.
For instance, folder "Refererence" now hold Dictionary, Lexipedia, Thesaurus, etc.
All was OK for a while, but then I started to get error messages about 2 application .lnks that I had moved into a subfolder. The funny thing is, the links actually work! It's just that randomly, I get a WM6 message that there is a problem with " Programs > XXX > AAA "
Does anyone know how to make a "new" link, to replace these old links? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program and then moving those 2 .lnks, again, to the subfolder where I want it to be, but it happened again!
Thanks for any and all ideas!
PS: I have SK Tools installed; I thought there was a shortcut tool, but I cannot find it
Go into Program Files then whatever application you want the shorcut for. Copy the exe file then navigate to wherever you want the shortcut and paste shortcut. Rename the shorcut to whatever you want and the link is done!
Having said that if your shortcuts work sometimes but not others I cant see how it is a problem with the actual shortcut. You may need help here from someone more experienced than me.
I have an edited htchomesettings.xml that i want to put on my jade.
Everytime i try to drag 'n drop this file into my windows folder, i get the 'acced denied, be sure the file isn't read-only, in use or that you have enough space left'-error.
When looking at the file's properties (with Resco or total commander) it seems to be fixed in the Rom and i think that's the reason i can't overwrite it.
I already googled it and found some topics concerning this problem, and generally they all give the same advice:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2736263&postcount=500
the problem is, i already used both programs, and apparently it does not seem to work, or i'm doing it wrong or i'm overlooking something...
So, can anyony tell me how to overwrite this file with total commander or resco, if this is possible.
Many thanks, and sorry if this is a stupid question, i searched the web for about 3 hours before asking you guys .
It's a little easier than that. The only thing you need to do is make sure that the plugin is not running. In other words, deactivate the plugin in the Settings menu. Then, do a soft reset, just to make sure that the system has stopped using it. Then you can copy and paste with any program that you like. I have found that using a PC (via ActiveSync) works best. Good luck!!
Thanks for the quick reply thunder.
Unfortunately, it did not work out. I deactivated TouchFlo already (and did the reset). And still it gives me the same error.
"Cannot copy HtcHomeSettings. Make sure your device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type"
This time I simply used Active sync as you told me.
Again, does it have something to do with the fact that this file is hardcoded on the rom?

Unfortunately, if it is built into the rom, you will probably have a hard time copying over it. Have you tried to edit the file directly on the phone? I believe that there are a few xml editors for ppc floating out there, you could try that. Also, is there anything in particular that you want to do that requires you to modify the xml? Reason I am asking is because you could use M2D Customizer if you are only looking into modifying some settings. Hope this helps...
Allright, found out how to overwrite it!
Made a .m2dct file containing my preferred theme and settings, then i edited the included HtcHomeSettings.xml file.
Then i used the M2D customizer to load the .2mdct file, and that worked perfectly.
Thanks for the hint, Thunder!
I could never hear anybody with the AT&T AudioPara4 file. I performed the registry tweak to switch to the stock AudioPara3 file. You can use Diamond Tweak to accomplish this as well with the 100db European Limit tweak. This improved the volume but distorted the speakerphone at the higher levels.
After trying a couple AudioPara3 files I decided to tweak the stock AudioPara3 ROM file. The files I tried didn't tweak the levels proportionally and/or didn't solve the issue. I've been having problems with the earpiece not being loud enough and the speakerphone distorting the call. When switching between speakerphone and the earpiece I would have to adjust the volume.
In my tweaked file I modified only the earpiece and speakerphone volumes. There are 5 volume levels for each.
The volume on the speakerphone was the same for levels 3, 4, and 5. What they did was increase the gain each level which caused clipping of the audio. What I did was shift everything up two levels and added two proportionally quieter levels to the bottom. This give none to slight clipping at the highest volume depending on the caller.
For the earpiece I shifted everything down a level and added a proportionally increased 5th volume level. This provided the additional volume I needed without clipping.
Now I can switch between the earpiece and speakerphone without having to adjust the volume level.
Make sure to backup your old AudioPara3.csv file. You will need to use Total Commander to copy the file to the \Windows directory. Afterwards soft-reset and enjoy.

Now if someone could expand on this and modify the BT volume so that we could hear callers on our BT headsets...the Fuze would be the perfect device

I noticed with Firefox it opens as a new page instead of with the download file dialog. Try right-clicking the link and selecting Save Link As.

I don't have a BT headset to test this with. The file is easy to tweak as it is just a CSV (comma separated value file). Don't edit with Excel as I noticed it changed the spacing in other lines. What I did was open it in Excel so it was easier to read and then changed it with notepad.
The values are stored in hex. Use the windows calculator to convert to decimal so you can get the volumes proportionally increased. Lines starting with F6 - F11 are for the speakerphone and F12 - F17 for the earpiece. I changed the rxVolume and codecRxGain columns per the post above.
There is an F18 line that states BTHEADSET but it only has one volume level. There is also F0 - F5 that are HEADSET levels. You might try tweaking those. There are also G lines at the bottom for specific vendors, but I'm not sure when they are used.

Tenxo,
Your Windows Operating System is set up to associates a csv file to your program Excel.
This means that in your case, Excel is the default program to open any csv file.
You might want to save the csv file to your hard disk. Browse the folder. Use your right mouse button in the windows explorer, with the focus on the csv file and open the file with another program (i.e. Notepad). You can edit it and save the new result.
rsw686's tip is to view a (copy of a) csv file using Excel as this can make it more user-friendly- readable. But never assume that edditing a csv file in Excel and saving it will be usable for other programs.

I tried that and was able to save the file with .csv but it still shows up as opens with excel although the name has changed to audiopara3.csv it still opens with excel...
Could you post the file as a csv so it could be just moved to the windows folder without extra converting.
Thanks

There is nothing to convert. You just copy / paste the downloaded file onto your device. I place it on the storage card and then use total commander to copy / paste it into Windows.

Downloaded fine and copied to to the \Windows directory. Do I still need to modify the registry so the system knows to use the new tweaked AudioPara3 file?
I do not have access to a PC at the moment. When trying to dowload AudioPara3 file from thread it open in a new window in Opera on my phone.
Guess I need to download later at home.
As far as I can tell this particular file didn't make any difference on my phone. I put the file in my \windows directory and changed the registry setting to point to this new audiopar3 file and rebooted. Still sounds the same. Did I miss any steps?

Have you used diamond tweak to disable the 100db sound limitation? This can also be accomplished with a registry editor. The key to change is
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\WaveDev\AcousticFile
The stock value is \windows\AudioPara4-xxxxxx.csv. The x's vary depending on the provider. You need to change this to \windows\AudioPara3.csv which will tell it to use my tweaked file.

No, I didn't use the Diamond Tweak, I simply changed the registry settings (the same ones you indicated above) from the stock \windows\AudioPara4-_att_20080703.csv to \windows\AudioPara3.csv After that I performed a soft reset.

Mine shows 67.2k in the file explorer. You might try downloading the file from your phone and comparing it. What did you use to copy it to the \Windows directory. I know that Total Commander works well for this. I'm fairly sure you did this, but you did make sure the volume was turned all the way up when making a call?

Maybe I'll try downloading the file again. Can the file be downloaded directly to the phone or must I use a pc? When I tried it with the phone it just opened the .csv

Sounds like you did everything right. Here's a zipped version that should download directly to the phone. It could be that you might need to tweak the file louder. I bumped it up a notch which made a big difference to me, but maybe not as much for others.
Found this while trying to find something I had used a while back. It was made for Firefox but works fine in IE. Here's how to set it up and customize it:
Setting up the page
First, download the EIGHT zip from here: http://sdrv.ms/10qXWUS and unzip it to your root directory (C or your sd card)
Then paste C:\EIGHT\config.htm into a new tab. To change a link, simply type in the url (you MUST have http:// included in the url), along with the name of the png (if there is one for the site you want. you could also make your own, but I didn't have any luck doing that with IE)
Once you are done customizing, make sure you copy and paste the generated code into the source.js file in the folder.
Once this is all done, paste C:\EIGHT\index.htm into your tab. It should load your page.
Using the page
Now, to set it as your new tab and home page, open desktop IE and open internet options. Paste file:///C:/EIGHT/index.htm as your home page. To set it as your new tab page, click on the "Tabs" button right under that area. In the following window, click the drop-down and select "You first home page", Click ok and ok. You're all set!
Warning: for some reason, in metro IE, the page takes a little while to load. On the desktop however, it's great.
Cudos to flatmo1 over at DeviantArt who first made the original version of this!
Have fun!

Either open source.js in notepad or open config.htm in IE
Very nice solution - but I cant for the life of me get IE to accept the blocked content by default. Its keep baying me about it
Edit: Got it to work, very nice. It loads instantly on my w510 tablet both in metro and desktop
