Hello developers!
First i know how much u hate it when someone just post a new thread without checking the fourms, but I assure u that i read carefully all the related subject n still I couldn't find answers :/
I've been always an Apple person and I am really satisfied with the ease of use and performance, somehow whileI I was looking for a tablet to update my old iPad a friend of mine was able to convince me that I should get an Android, and I end up buying Asus Tf700, of course after hours n hours of reading reviews n stuff and on the paper it's waaaaaaaay better than any other tablet, even the new iPad!! But still, on the PAPER
I really disappointed with the performance and the terrible lag even with the simplest task (like scrolling down a website or pinch zoom in/out) and it keeps crashing and freezing for no reason
Everyone here recommends rooting and unlocking, and since this is my first Android Iam really confused
Root, rom,flash,kernel, unlock, OTA .. bla bla ...too much complicated info and procedures for a noob!!
I want my device to work like how they claim it should (ASUS ppl) .. very smooth with no lag or crashes .. but on the other hand i don't want to lose any of it's features (camera, GPS) .. should I update to jb? Should I stay with ICS?
N how??

Yes, you made a mistake changing to Android. It's not (yet) ready for end users, especially the TF700. Return it as long as you can and buy the new iPad.

If you are just looking for a device without lags and stutters then go for iOS.
But if you want/have to do things iOS can't do then go for Android and search for solutions for lag or live with it.
Android is sure the best smartphone os (Widgets, Launchers ,Tasker, Swype,...) but on tablets... I really don't know.
I love my Transformer but I mostly use it for surfing and gaming so maybe the iPad would have been the better choice.

Exactly, I want solution .. there are too many rome and stuff which says choose what suits u the most, but I have no idea what are they!!
I read in the forum that flashing and unlocking JB = losing camera and GPS functions .. what should I do? *Note I am still runnig ICS

I feel your pain. When I first moved over to an Android device, I was also confronted with similar issues. Yes, Android can be intimidating. However, once you get a handle of it, I assure you, you won't stop flashing different ROMs on a regular basis. First calm down and read through the following threads to get started:

Look, to be honest, I think everyone has been frightened in the beginning with unlocking and rooting, but in the end the tf700 is a really easy device to learn it with.
There are some guides in the general section (where you should have posted this thread ) and this section here.
As far as performance, I can tell you now that there is no Rom that works better than CleanRom In heritance.
It is *very* battery friendly, is really performant (forget about iPad, after that Rom you'll have the advantages of Android sealed in a super speedy packaging)
However, if you really feel you don't want to unlock the device yet, you should indeed at least update the tablet to the latest firmware, since it has some improvements to it. (I don't know how much the improvement is on the stock rom, but Clean Rom Inheritance is based on stock and it works like a charm).
By the way, there are no custom roms for the tf700 that give up on the gps and camera features. All developers here are real pros, so don't worry
And last but not least; if you were to update to the latest firmware and feel it's too laggy, (many people have said so), you should consider unlocking your device to put CleanRom on it. It's basically stock, but much smoother, faster and has no bloatware

Have you bought the keyboard dock? And I still think the tf700 is better of the two, if only because of its looks and dock

I know you are taking about tablets but the title says android...
I own a 4s and iPad 3, back in June I bought the s3 and I was really impressed with what it can do but its lag and performance made me question it the same as you, having spent £540 on a buggy feeling device.
I finally got jelly bean on it, jelly bean combined with disabling some crappy Samsung bloat made the s3 faster and smoother than any apple device out there, my iPad and iPhone both feel laggy in comparison now.
I have never routed or flagged a rom though, completely stock.
Before long you will love jelly bean

I just read this post so I'll quickly reply
By rooting and unlocking you will not compromise any of the camera qualities. It still works just the way it's supposed to on CleanRom (the rom I use) and I am pretty sure the developer of CM10.1 has it running too.
This device may not be what you expect it to be out of the box, but let me tell you.. The devs we have for the tf700 are all very talented and manage to get some impressive performance squeezed out of this device without resulting in battery drain.
You really can't go wrong chosing either CM10.1 or CRomI (as we call CleanRom Inheritance)
As for the options you can choose while installing CRomI, they are mainly
- the kernel: do you want to keep everything close to stock, resulting in better battery life, and no overclocking? Or do you want a tweaked kernel (Clemsyn) which means even better performance, without taking too much of a hit on battery life. The latter is overclocked. If you still don't know what to choose: I have recently gone back to stock since it's just a tad friendlier for the battery and CRomI is smooth enough as it is
- Apps: select which apps you want preinstalled in your rom and which you don't want (little tip: always make sure the Play Store is checked: it's a vital app to install other apps with and it's a pain in the @$$ to install it from somewhere else if you want to keep it up to date
This method of building your personal rom on the spot is handy to deselect the bloatware you don't use (eg. Asus screensaver) and select the 'bloat' you like (eg. Supernote)
- Tweaks: I usually select the all, because the make the device even smoother and faster
By the way: in misc apps you'll have an app called Titanium Backup: that app keeps your data while switching Roms and is a nice way of making sure you'll keep your progress in games
I should say though: even though I've never tried Cm10.1, I am sure it's a great rom and I don't want to force you or anyone else to only look at Cromi, since CM10.1 has its own advantages
Just have a look for yourself and if you have any further questions, you now know where to post them (either Q&A for actual questions or general for remarks and findings).
The development section is used solely by developers of Roms, mods and kernels to share their creations with the world

Dr. Hawk, I know that reading these replies still hard for you as far as "what next" and "how". I'm sure that after you done all the steps below, you will find out the grass does look greener on the other side (IOS vs Android). With Android you could do more...a lot more compared to ipad. You just need to take ONE step at a time and within a few days you should have a smile on your face. There are plenty of people here ready to help noob(beginner) like youseft. Also I would like to mention that unlocking your device will void waranty, but in my opinion, if you don't do it, you will not happy with your device and eventually you're not going to use it, so it useless anyway. Let us know and please post update here so we can proceed accordingly. Here are the steps:
1. Unlock your device (download Asus unlock tool app and run it. This needed in order to install custom rom/kernel)
2. Flash custom recovery (there are 2 to choose from TWRP and CWM. I recommend TWRP for noob, it just easier with nice big User interface)
3. Use TWRP or CWM to flash your favorite custom rom (If you want trouble free, full stock features, CleanRom is the one to use)
That's all my friend. While you're performing these steps you're going to feel good about yourself and rewarding. When you are ready to go, just post here and we will walk you through, step by step. Once everything is done let us know if you do smile at the end and "no regred" that you picked Android and tf700. Cheers!!!!!!

I'm a flasher since I got my first android device and I have to say I don't want to have an iOS device because of it's performance! If you have a good ROM (and on my TF300T GPU/CPU OC a bit) you will get the same system performance and way more cusomization options - only problem for me is that a friend from my class has an iPad and uses it for school - there I just see the disadvantage of Android Tablets - except system apps you just don't have many apps for productive work that are optimized for tablets - including Dropbox(!!) that are way better optimized on iOS...
But I think in 1 or maybe 2 years it will be like with phones that Open Source (Android and maybe then also Ubuntu if they take the step for tabs too) will be sold more than iPads and with this the apps will also get optimized better :good:
atm I can just cry because of a friend made an own app for iOS to edit his scaeed books etc. and I can just open them with a non-optimized Adobe PDF Reader
so if you want now Custom ROM too, have a look at this guide and follow the steps unlock your bootloader, Flash recovery (I recommend TWRP!) and then go to the ROM you want (I recommend stock based: Clean ROM or AOSP based which means more customization options: Baked Blackbean) and install it with the installation instructions there - if you then still have questions ask in Q&A section because here it is only development section

What I take from your displeasure is the recurring "Android is open source for the customizer and this I don't want."
So like the previous comments I would vote for a return to iOS.
iDevices are very well designed and usable.
So if your user experience has been less than pleasing with Android I wouldn't stick with it.

iOS devices are made for those who would like ease of use and having everything done automatically for them, and don't want to bother with things like settings and customisation and freedom of decision. If you're used to having everything done for you, stick with it. Changing to a system that requires you to manually do things for yourself when you don't want to is not going to make you very happy.
Apple is Use, don't Think.
Android is Think, don't just Use.
If you're used to the ease and smoothness of iOS, and were perfectly happy with the system, you're not going to like Android. Because Android isn't meant as an end-user OS.
Now, regarding flashing. I'm not going to try it on my tablet at all until the warranty has passed. The store I bought it from is not exactly know for its excellent customer service, and it updated to .30 before I heard about backing it up.
Is there a solution? Yes, get an iPad. The TF700 has some serious I/O issues which cause lag, but even if you're using the best of the best Android tab (whichever one that may be) you're still going to experience crashes, simply because of the customisation options. That's why iOS 'never' (ahem, hand me one, it'll crash.) crashes, you can't customized so there's no conflicts.
Don't get me wrong, I have an iPod 5th gen and love it (if Apple's warranty wasn't so horrendous...), and as a designer I appreciate the marketing and design behind iOS, but as a user I want to make my own choices, and I absolutely detest anything that goes automatic or makes its decisions for me.

That's not strictly true with newer devices.
Both my iPad 3 and iPhone get more app crashes and ui/keyboard lags than my stock int galaxy s3, which performs faster and smoother with everything except the dialer. Since using the s3the iOS screen doesn't seem as smooth as it used to, very slightly choppy moving between 2 app pages.
I use Nova launcher and it is perfectly smooth, fast and since the upgrades to jb 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 not a single crash or FCC, though on ICS there were many.

+1 on nexus 10. I have both and even with custom rom the tf700 is not as smooth as the n10. No tweaking necessary. How come you can't return it?

Don't hesitate to ask explanation when you don't get a step in the walktrhoughs.
They are usually written by people who are experienced using Android for people who are somewhat experienced as well So for a complete newcomer to the Android platform, I can imagine you'll ask yourself some quesitons later

What does prime 1.6 offer over stock 3.1 root?

I haven't flashed to any Tom's yet, but this seems to be the most popular. Why is that? I looked at the change log and I don't understand what I would be gaining I guess.

same too me, I tried it over 3.1, what I experienced:
- browser little bit slower
- more SOD
- nothing real extra feature

I have to use a custom rom for a couple of reasons:
1) My stock rom is the Chinese verison, which means no google apps or google sync. Without google, it's just not android.
2) I need the Chinese input methods. I would normally switch to the USA stock rom, but it doesn't have Chinese input. Prime does/did, Chinese handwriting input is MIA, but I'll sure it will be taken care of.
I choose to use a custom rom for these reasons:
3) I don't like excess crap on my computer. I can modify a custom rom before I install it, mostly just removing apps that I will never use.
4) Root! I love freedom on my computer. Root lets me do things. All kinds of neat things: block ads, increase speed on sd card, delete/modify system apps and directories, and lots more. Look into it, it is fun.
5) Overclock. Prime doesn't have it, but you can add a kernal that does. I currently don't overclock, but as the Tegra 2 ages, i will overclock it. I'm specifically waiting for a rom with a high GPU overclock. There is one out there that currently does have a minor GPU overclock.
6) Clockwork Recovery. Backup, restore, switch roms, clear cache and more.
Why I choose Prime:
7) Dock battery meter in the taskbar.
8) Reboot/recovery options for power button.
After looking through the current selection of roms available, I choose Prime. But I keep my eye on revolver and Clemsyn.

How do you not? OP clearly states that there are optimizations made to increase load times etc etc.

No, op states "better user experience" which is very vague. Also I'm not having any slow load times, everything is pretty zippy.

Last time I flashed a Tom he punched me in the face...
One reason I haven't seen mentioned would also be themes, but it is still early in the game, there are few options. Custom Roms are generally just optimized better, though the Transformer doesn't have nearly the bloat some Android devices have making them almost essential...
Honestly once you learn, it is such an easy process that flashing different roms/kernels and trying them is the only real way to know what is best for you and your usage.

Then why are you worrying about ROMs? It's obvious you want some of that Baconcomb so just get it already.
Honestly, I don't know why people ever need to "beg" you to try something. If you're happy with what you got already, then be happy.
"If it isn't broken, don't fix it"
If you're curious, then just do it... because all in honesty. One person's opinion is only a opinion. The only way you're going to know if it's worth it is from YOUR personal experience. I can personally say that, PRIME 1.6 and root is good and its worth it.
If you don't want to take my word for it, then don't. I'm not going to beg you to do it.

He asked what was the difference between stock and Prime, and you went off in another direction. He wasn't asking to be "begged" into using Prime nor asking for others to convince him into using Prime at all.
Anyways, I know Prime has a few optimizations, but I don't know if it brings any substantial changes. There's a link to download the power/recovery mod, so I suppose it could be applied to any ROM including rooted stock.

One reason I would like to root my tf101 is to be able to use a USB dongle. But I am waiting for 3.2 to come out before since I just got my tf101.
The stock version is pretty good actually. No major complaints so far.

I hav ebeen using Prime for a while but ASUS stock version is definitely quite good. Even more so for lack of garbageware that so plagues the mobile phones...

Yea I guess I'm in the same camp. I haven't seen a compelling reason to move to a different ROM versus rooted stock. There are too many posts that seem to lead users to believe that a different ROM is the same as root. Remember you can root the stock ROM. The OP is asking what user experience enhancements make Prime (or any other ROM) compelling.

If you read changelog second post it will tell you exactly what's new in the ROM. Many changes are only useful for experienced linux users, but many others are useful for everyone. The nice thing about roms is that most of the things and tweaks are already done for you. If you don't need/care about those changes then there is no point for you to reflash.

I'm curious because I'm thinking of picking up one of these today ( the guy at Orifice Depot tried to get me to buy an Iconia, but that thing doesn't have anywhere near the support the TF is getting...)....?

Manufacturer's (ASUS included) have to be very careful about their ROM releases so they are thoroughly tested and ready to release to the general public. Consequently they are slower to release updates (i.e. NVidia updates, etc.). Custom ROMs generally consolidate the best and latest releases from various manufacturer's into the most cuttest edge versions you can possibly be running. As you'll notice this can also mean more lock-ups and weird issues since you are getting just-available changes. So if you prefer max stability, stick with the manufacturer's updates. For many of us part of the fun of owning an Android tablet is the rapid pace that custom ROMs are put out and the interesting/quirky things they bring us.

I got a B60 TF and a B60 dock from my local OD this past weekend (Denver, CO).

Prime Vs Stock
Reason why I flashed the Prime Rom. With Prime and a netflix patch I'm able to stream netflix movie. Also now Adhoc connections work. I can Wifi tehther my TF101 with my Driod using the adhoc connection. I can now easily reboot into recovery prior to this going into recovery was a bit tricky. This was not possible even with HC 3.2. Also I don't have to worry about losing root becuase of an OTA update.

I am actually a flashaholic when it comes to flashing roms on my phone. But so far, I haven't come across any compelling reasons to flash custom roms on my transformer. The need to flash roms on phones offer benefits that are non existant on a tablet. For instance, one major reason to flash custom roms on phones is to enable free wifi tethering, which obviously does not apply here. Another reason, as stated above is to remove bloatware. The transformer doesn't really have that. And yet another reason is to be able to update to the latest Android version before the official release. Correct me if i'm wrong but when I looked, the 3.2 update came out officially before any transformer custom roms had it. There are a couple more minor customizations options that I'm not seeing yet being offered by the transformer roms. I am fully aware of the speed enhancements and optimizations that custom roms offer, but considering the custom roms for the transformer are still relatively new (no disrespect or discredit to the devs for their hard work), and considering that even still now, the rooting and flashing methods keep getting outdated and changed, it's too early in this ballgame for me to flash.

I've been lurking the forums here now for a month and finally pulled the trigger, my TF get's here monday.
I have yet to see any reason to flash a custom rom or even root at this point. I'll be rooting it just to say it's rooted and just for a couple of root only programs I have. The custom roms don't really bring anything to the table that this tablet doesn't have. it has the newest version of android with all the bells and whistles. I'm not going to be overclocking. I understand netflix is big for some people, but, from what I have read flashing the fix breaks some video playback. I'm ok to wait for the official netflix patch. A 32gb MicroSD and the 16gb on board space is plenty to store movies on for travel etc. I also have a server I run at home that will stream my entire movie,. TV, and music collections directly to me.
Having the best of the best and the most up to date version of android does have it's perks

i have been an owner of the Transformer for just under a week, to be honest i think its a let down.
Internet experience is slow and jerky, flash takes a while to speed up. (Ive tried all browsers)
N64iod runs better and faster on my xperia play (which is a 1 core processor)
Some games seem to re-download every time i run them.
Cant play 720p with HW enabled with SW there slow.
Live wallpapers slow down the OS, my Xperia doesn't!
I could go on.
I know the OS is relatively new, but i cant buy that. The tablet cost me £415 with dock, If i was a normal customer, (the everyday user) i would take it back to the shop as i would think it was broke.
My last point is the constant crashes, it even locked up while trying to shut down.
So please please please tell me there is an answer, i so want to like it, as the concept is brill, i based buying this on my xperia play, i love the os, but honeycomb maybe the problem here!

My last point is the constant crashes, it even locked up while trying to shut down.
So please please please tell me there is an answer, i so want to like it, as the concept is brill, i based buying this on my xperia play, i love the os, but honeycomb maybe the problem here!

First of all, what android version and firmware build are you running and are you rooted? Secondly, have you performed any OTA updates since you bought your TF? Before I installed a custom rom on my TF, I myself have experienced serious lag and slow down due to multiple OTA updates. As with any pc based platform, its typically best to do a full wipe and perform a clean install to have it running at its peak. Before I took the route of a custom rom, i did a full wipe and fresh install and could immediately tell the difference in speed. So my suggestion is that you take that route first. Also, if you are interested in rooting and installing a custom rom, be advised that starting with the B70 revision, ASUS changed and locked down the bootloaders and they are currently unrootable at this time...which means you won't be able to install a custom rom. Find your S/N and if it starts with B70 or higher, then you won't be able to root at this time.

I have not had to many FCs, either stock or on Prime. Most times that I get any problems at all are in the stock browser, and usually thenjust a matter of slowness and the occasional "FC or Wait" prompt; particuarlly on more 'involved' web pages. Loading pages are also fairly sloow at times but still faster than my phone. My phone uses Opera for tremendous inprovement over it's stock browser.
Don't know about the 720p, haven't tried and don't know what program you used. Out of box is rather minimal audio/video playback as far as I noticed.
General performance wise, this thing beats a number of x86 systems I've had, espiecally while compiling C/C++ code.
If it's not something closer to the hardware, doing an nvflash to a custom rom might be worth trying but it can be an irk to deal with nuking everythiing you have stored, backups or no.

Internet experience is slow and jerky, flash takes a while to speed up. (Ive tried all browsers)
Latest Flash, Latest Browser (3.2.1) - runs good.
N64iod runs better and faster on my xperia play (which is a 1 core processor)
I have this issue, too - probably Tegra2 related (OCing may help?)
Some games seem to re-download every time i run them.
What games? Never noticed it.
Cant play 720p with HW enabled with SW there slow.
Get DicePlayer - best player around, supports HW acceleration and 720p is good as well (compared to others) - thanks to tegra2 plugins. Not free tough.
Live wallpapers slow down the OS, my Xperia doesn't!
Higher resoltioun and tegra2 issue AFAIK (might be wrong).

You are correct, custom roms are always going to end up being preference. If you are able to root, the best way to start off this endeavor is to visit the posts of all 3 major roms for the TF in the development section. Find out what each rom offers, and make your decision based off of that. You can always try out each rom to see which one you like better.

Asus changed the bootloader not too long after they started making the B70 revisions. So there is a very small window of chance that your TF can be rooted. You can always try, but the chances are slim. I can't answer your Opera question...I don't use Opera.

There is no option for this in Opera Mobile; I should know, it's what I use off the phone next to me .
Opera Mini is probably the same, but I would highly doubt it would support that feature even if it wasn't.

Lol, this man has made the greatest mod to his TF!
But yeah, try running a custom rom (if you can) and see if your problems are still present. If so, contact Asus and maybe they will give you a replacement, could simple be some hardware malfunctions.

well i tried to root using the all in one tool, when trying to backup and root i kept getting an error cannot boot to pad or something like that, so for now ive had to admit defeat and wait for some bright spark to hopefully crack the new bootloader :-(

Just wanted to bump my original thread to say after alot of complaing from me i can now say i am a proud owner of the Asus Transformer TF101.
Thanks to the fact i can now root and install custom roms.
After a few weeks of trial and error, i tried, revolver, Prime and KRAKD.
The latter for me was easily the best so so smooth, OC 1.504 i tried same on the other Roms, but with KRAKD i had no issues and its just so much quicker in my opinion.
One issue that exists in all the custom roms is that the xbox controller doesn't work until you change the kernel. Weird.
Brwosing is more of a joy and with ICS on its way my tablet experience is looking up!
Still tempted by windows 8 but we will wait and see.

If you have a PS3, you should be able to use a Sigaxis controller using the Sigaxis application on the market as well.

Which ROM to apply

Hello everyone,
First let me say that I am a noob at this so please be patient with my inquiry. I have applied custom rom on a Coby Kryos 7042, but those are for my kids... And I'm not overly impressed with what that got me, but like I said, those tabs are for my kids.
The purpose of this topic is find out what ROM I should flash to my stock TF300t.
There are numerous ROMs on this board and I cant determine which one to apply.
I'm not a serious gamer, so selecting a ROM because it makes games run faster/smoother is of no use for me.
This is what I would like to see from a custom rom...
Make my overall experience better with the TF300t. I'm not complaining about the TF300t, so far I love it. Can it be better? Probably.
Can a custom ROM make the transistions from page/screen to page/screen faster? If so, which ROM?
Can a custom ROM increase my WIFI range of the TF300, if the TF300 wifi range is not fully utilized? I hope that made sense.
Which ROM on this board is close to error/bug free?
If I apply a custom ROM will I be able to use JB when ASUS releases it?
I'm not asking who is the 'best' at creating a custom ROM, for that is subjective. I just want some help picking out a good one for me.
I've already rooted my 300 and I've downloaded the unlock boot tool from ASUS, but I havent unlocked the tab yet.

If you've only just bought the tab, I would recommend not unlocking it yet - make sure there are no defects before you unlock as this will void your warranty. Once you're happy with it, go for it

I plan to wait for the official release of Jelly Bean before I unlock. If I dont like the offcial release I will unlock and try a custom ROM.

Like some of the other posters I would not unlock so soon especially if you are satisfied with the performance. I waited until after my 30 period return window before I unlocked. However, I can only speak for one from since it is the only from that I have tried on this device. Seanz hydro ponic rom is fantastic and I am completely satisfied with it. I have run cm9 and aokp on other devices and if you like customization these are pretty good.

since no one actually answered your questions....here we go.
make the experience better? usually custom ROMs get rid of all the bloat and un-necessary stuff inside the OS. this usually speeds it up a bit...it may be noticable it may not. they also usually throw in some tweaks and customization. i am going to take AOKP for instance....since i am very familiar with that.
it allows for overclocking and undervolting, custom toggles in the notification area, custom shortcuts from the lock screen, adding buttons to the bottom navigation bar and changing their colors and icons and the later ones have a theme engine built in so changing the entire look of the tab is as easy as downloading an app and hitting a button.
make the home screen transitions faster.....usually custom ROMs ditch the stock launcher in favor of a custom one (nova, apex, or trebuchet) all of these have a setting in which you can tweak the transition speed as well as pretty much anything else you want to change. nova launcher and apex launcher (my personal fav) are downloadable and install-able from the play store.
increase wifi range? this one i am not sure of...i haven't really looked into it since i am pretty happy with my range, but i would guess that they don't increase wifi range.
bug free? anything based off stock will be good...however, these are custom ROMs with not much testing...there will be bugs...some you my notice, others you may not....its just the name of the game. i usually dont notice any myself until others point them out. it still doesn't bother me...AOKPs customizations and tweaks outweigh the small bugs here an there....IMO.
use official JB OTA...yes i believe you can download and flash an official OTA that you can get from asus' site...someone correct me if i am wrong.
so there you go. you can make your decision from that...but like others have said, it may be a good idea to hold off unlocking for a bit. if you absolutely cannot live without some of the customizations of say...AOKP, go ahead and flash away....but if slapping on a custom launcher and speeding up that screen transition is enough, just do that and hold off until official JB is pushed to us....that is my plan....at least for the time being (CM10 is making it hard to pass up though )

For the sake of answering the question I will go against previous posts and suggest that you unlock and flash a rom. Make a backup of your stock rom before flashing and then you can always revert back and manually update to JB when it arrives...or wait a few days after it's released for a JB based rom. Until that time I suggest flashing Asus-Hydro. It has all the stock features, is bug free as far as I can tell, and adds noticeable speed to the tf300. Not sure if it improves wifi distance, but it definitely speeds up homescreen transitions and greatly improves browser performance.
Make backups, follow instructions, and enjoy.

If you took the time to read any of the other threads relating to JB you would have maybe come across a section on XDA that referred to "Tablets that will get JB 4.1"
In that thread there was a link that pointed to a reliable tech review site that got a official answer from Asus stating "Asus has build a reputation of being 1st and we don't want to disappoint our users"
That being said JB 4.1 is officially launched mid-July that is currently ... wow ... Now!
Asus will be quick on the official release to update their Tablets as they clearly stated by "We have a Reputation of being 1st"
So there is nothing officially stated if that's what you were looking for but within a month is my best estimate taking into consideration their track record for updates.

[Q] Will a new ROM be all I ever dreamed of....?

Hi all! I'm a noob to the site and a noob to smartphone modifications, so please forgive me for my questions and concerns. I've used forums for years on many topics and found the knowledge base to be incredible, so I hope you guys will help me out, too.
So, while my Skyrocket has generally worked very well for the past 2+ years, I have always felt it's not living up to its potential. I've read numerous threads on many forums to see what my fellow Rocketeers were doing. I think I've come to the conclusion that flashing a new ROM is the way to go, but I am a bit wary since I've never done this nor know anyone who has. My thinking goes along the same lines as my experience with computers... If you buy a Dell, HP, etc., you get the garbage that the manufacturer bundles in along with Windows. If you wipe the HD and install your own clean copy of Windows, you can usually get better performance without all that other stuff. Hence, the idea for a new ROM for the phone.
A few things have me wondering, though... There seem to be more ROMs available than flavors of Linux! I know choice will end up being a personal thing. My goal is really simple... I just want a clean OS that is stable, efficient, and runs the basic functions I am accustomed to. So, I am not looking to experiment or push the envelope. I want a phone that doesn't crash at the worst possible time, and one that can actually make phone calls! I assume that I will still be able to use the Google Play store to download apps (after installing the plugin thingy). My phone is from AT&T and is unlocked. Will it say unlocked after flashing a new ROM? Will Visual Voicemail still work? I occasionally use FoxFi to create a mobile hotspot. Will I still be able to use it? Or do other ROMs already have this feature unlocked (or bypassed)? I use apps on my phone mostly for email (Yahho/Gmail), calendar, FB, Instagram, YouTube, taking photos/video, viewing forums, and the like, besides making phone calls. In other words, what should I expect from a new ROM? How will things be different? I'm really trying to gauge if this is a worthwhile endeavor for me.
Sorry for the long post. I appreciate your opinions and experience.

It's always worthwhile.
The Skyrocket, to me, was always a case of OEM software that limited its potential. If you really sit down and tweak it, custom ROM, new governor, overclock, it's a beast of a phone that can still keep pace today. You'll have to balance performance with battery life--overclocking and switching to a more aggressive governor doesn't do you any favors there, and some ROMs are better about battery life than others. It's a great phone with a lot of life left, though, much more so than the vanilla S2 because the Rocket has LTE capability.
To hit your other questions, any app that is available on the Play Store will work. If a ROM needs a second gapps flash to get the Play Store (along with everything else Google ships) back, that will be made available and is a very easy install. I've never unlocked a phone, but I don't believe that a new ROM would lose that. Wait for someone else to reply, but I'd be shocked if it did. As far as what you want, there's a ROM to suit any desires. Most ROMs are pretty basic and look and feel like you'd expect a Skyrocket to. Some are designed to feel a little more like iOS, some are designed to be stripped-down (and faster as a result), and some are based on stock firmware and very closely replicate the original experience. It's up to you to read through the dev forum for the Rocket and pick the experience that's best for you.
As far as how difficult it is, spend a couple hours reading about flashing, how it works and why it works. Once you have that basic understanding of it and can follow a few simple instructions that are pretty universal across ROMs, you're set.

Well, I'm giving this a try tonight. Fingers crossed!

One piece of advice: when you pick a new rom from "Android development" read the WHOLE thread associated with that rom, with special attention the the first couple of pages. Make sure you understand the process and any potential pitfalls.
First rom I tried I spent probably six hours reading. It was worth it.

Success!!! I now have the latest CandyKat running! It ended up being not too bad at all. Now I need to figure out how things are different from the AT&T Jelly Bean this replaces.

I have Kandykat. It seems to be a good solid rom. The Google Now launcher is buggy though. I changed to Nova launcher. Other than that it's been fine.

Thanks for the tips, Chris. I've been using Launcher3. What's the difference between these launchers? Everything seems to be running fine on my rocket now. Any tips on increasing battery life? Any tips on some nice customization?

Google Now launcher seems to have the annoying habit of forgetting the screen setup (app positioning) during reboot. Launcher 3 also exhibited the same problem. Launchers are a matter of taste, but Nova launcher seems solid and looks right to me. YMMV. It's easy to try a few.

The most boring phone I've ever owned

Hey folks just wanted to say that I really love my V10. But coming from Nexus and some of the other LG series I am going crazy with the lack of "things" to tinker with. I am not exactly a flash-a-holic but I am definitely a tinkerer (if thats a word). I like to flash custom Roms and fool around with xposed and maybe a little mod here or there. It's crazy how this phone still has virtually no developer support or any kind of custom rom scene. (yes I understand why about the locked bootloaders etc etc). It's been so long I almost feel like I'm rusty and probably forgot how.. Haha.
Nevertheless I love it and it's a great phone (although a bit on the heavy side as time goes on). My wife just got the Galaxy S7 and it's so nice and small and bright and waterproof. Does make me think about looking other ways. I dunno. I hope LG doesn't just make this phone like a stepchild to the flagship series. Still barely gettin marshmallow update in other countries and not really anything new with the 2nd screen for any apps or anything. I guess this is borderline off topic but just some musings I've had the last week or so. Later!

If you have been around long enough as I have, you will have learned that when ROM's are not available that a Root Explorer is a very good friend. I will go in depth
Base things one uses with a unlocked bootloader / Alternatives to a locked bootloader.
Custom Recovery: TWRP (Or W/E you like) / FlashFire (Install zips, make backups)
Custom ROM: CyanogenMod ( Or if Im using a device DHacker is supporting then I would use that to test the **** out of it) / Stock/BloatStock ( Xposed Modules can do almost everything any custom ROM can if not more than what a Custom ROM could do)
Custom Kernel: Dont need one, never needed one. If it was forced via the ROM then it was used. / Plenty of apps to do little things like Overclock or RAM management etc.
It's my belief people new to the Android Platform go for Custom ROMs is to get everything in one place in one ROM build. Hence why Android is beginning to absorb most of the popular things in the modding community to the aosp nexus builds, slowly if I might add.
All in all, research, time, and stock img files are your best friend to learn from trial and error.

Totally agree, I dont miss the phone dying on me once in a while, having to flash an "old" backup, loosing some data... And with xPosed this phone is as customisable as I ever needed :good:

The need to be able to make a change to how the phone operates, and see that change in action.
And then change it again. Ownership of the device, playing with the experience of using the phone.
Getting to touch, swish, swipe, scroll - interact with the device (you never been in bed and gone endlessly through your settings menu, again and again; into all the options, all the possibilities? It's not really for the 'settings', you already know what you want really...It's to swish and swipe, especially if the phone is high end, the screen is beautiful and the actions like silk) until you fall asleep cradling it lovingly in your hand under the pillow and waking with it stuck to your cheek?
A sense of learning
A sense of making technology do what You want - of being able to effect change.

So what are you going to buy now?

I've a v10 and will stay with it for at least one year. Since MM is being rolled-out, I'm pretty fine. I also had and still have several nexus devices and was disappointed by the quality of hardware.

There is a lot more to do on the V10 than my previous Nexus 6. I don't think I understand...

I don't get that guys here saying that they are moving to an other phone. Just do it. But noone cares which phone you have and why you're moving on. It seems like those guys still are not sure and just want other to ask them to stay. I don't care. Have fun with your next phone - until you get it and and complain and buy an other one. And so on and so on. There is an other root cause of your frustration and I'm pretty sure it's not the phone ?

Only one feature missing imo: IP68.
