CES 2013: Any Android QWERTY devices? - Android General

Any QWERTY devices planned for CES 2013?

Nope, but i know someone who has a "samsung pro" its like a bb but uses android

There haven't been any great or awesome Global QWERTY Androids for the entire 2012! We are edging closer to the end of slide-out QWERTYs overall, however horrific that might sound. HTC has stated at the start of 2012, that it will not focus on QWERTY phones as it consists of only a small group of buyers. Samsung launches only mid-range QWERTY phones and that too only in the US, whereas Motorola who launches high-end QWERTY phones does so only in the US as well. Sony has launched only one proper QWERTY phone and that was way back in 2011 and I have absolutely never heard of a properly LG QWERTY phone. So I would be really surprised if we do see a high-end QWERTY phone that launches globally.

Sad...........just ****ing sad.

The last Motorola QWERTY was the Photon Q on Sprint released last August. It has decent specs 4.3" screen and 1.5ghz S4 processor, but its only on Sprint. The best spec'd GSM slider appears to be the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G on T-mobile but it has At&t 3G bands, no LTE though. It has a 4" screen and a 1.5ghz S4, but only a 5MP camera.

I've not used Android before, having started with Win 6.5 on an XDA, through an Xperia X1, and onto a HTC Win phone 7, all with qwerty keyboard... Win 7 was a let-down in terms of what I could do with Word and Excel, so I am looking at an Android phone, but the over-riding requirement is a landscape sliding qwerty keyboard - so should I wait for something new which may be on the horizon, or buy whatever is currently available (not that I know what that is even) whilst I still can?
Oh, I'm in the UK... which appears to limit me still further in choice!
Many thanks,
Tref.

Motorola used to sell their Droid qwerty series overseas except they called them Milestone and they were GSM. But the Milestone 3 was the last and is the same as my Droid 3 which is stuck on Android 2.3 GB officially. If there was a Milestone 4 I'd recommend that but there never was, unless you want to import a Droid 4 and get a SIM unlock code. Or theres the Galaxy S Relay 4G from T-mobile that you could import, its newer and should be easier to get working on GSM since T-mobile is GSM.

Actually, Droid 4 is not SIM locked on Verizon, and it works on overseas GSM carriers with local SIM cards without any hacking as long as it has been updated to ICS (I'm writing this on one in Europe).

I was interested a while ago in buying a Droid 4 and use it in Europe. I decided to wait for the CES and obviously i waited for nothing.
I'd be totally glad and thankful if you can share a bit of your feelings about yours. Site reviews are nice things, but user's feelings are always better.
Thanks.

I'd be suprised not to see a Droid 5 this year, I always thought it was a popular brand for Motorola?
Never bothered with importing a Droid 4, the LTE band (700Mhz only) is worthless here in the UK. Perhaps we will see a rise in keyboard-cases for those of us who would like a keyboard. There are some decent ones for the iPhone and some chinese ones for the Note.

Any news? The situation in Europe is quite sad.. I can't understand why Motorola canceled its XT898, which could have been some sort of hope.
On the other side, Droid 4 has locked bootloader (after the Milestone I said to myself, never again), and to get to work a Photon Q is not that easy.
I don't get why no producer cares releasing a single damn QWERTY phone in Europe. Maybe they're not so popular, but given it would be the only one, I think it should have some sort of success!

I love my qwerty devices, but they're becoming rarer and rarer. After buying a Nexus 7, I think I could live without a physical keyboard and might jump on the GS4 boat.

T-Mobile G2 (Desire Z) user here and ashamed there isn't any modern, new QWERTY phones available. Can we live without them? Yes, but we can also live without SD card, 250ppi screen and quad core chips ffs.Where's my QWERTY! Also, I am still waiting for this phone that has not been released yet...

I believe there is a poll on here somewhere for those that want a decent qwerty slide phone (my requirement is one which also has an extra row for numbers)... Unfortunately I haven't made enough posts on here yet to be able to add my name to it!

Would you post the link please?

You can use photon q:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929143

I looked into the Photon Q, but with problems of finding one to important, and getting it modified (my soldering skills are not that good) was too much for me. My HTC phone 7 is at deaths door, so I finally settled on an Xperia Z. Sure enough, my fears over the keyboard are realised (can't find my way around the phone yet either, but sure I will with time).... I bought a cheap Bluetooth qwerty keyboard the next day, and it connected and worked no problem at all, but the feel is awful... have seen nicer slide cases for the iphone 5 (with a numbers row and back lit), but will it pair up ok with that? I think for the sake of £20 I will try it... planning then to butcher a case or two to make a phone I can use the way I want to! Unless... anyone has any better ideas??!
Oh, and I can't find the poll I mentioned now!

I just bogged down and bought a galaxy s4. The bigger the screen the easier it is to type. Still, I miss buttons for emulators.

This isn't the poll I meant, but is another (old) one:

a solid buy is all i can say. funtions without disappointment at all times required and even tho it came out last year it still can sit next to an s4 without being embarassed. in fact it seems the droid 4 works smoother than the s4, but just short of smoothness of an iphone. not a big deal at all. it's the first phone that has completely met my needs and i planned on sticking with it for a while anyway. if you want a qwerty slider, then this droid 4 is the best pick in the whole planet right now. photon q is like a lower spec droid 4.
unfortunate that usa customers arent able to benefit unless theyre with verizon. hopefully motorola will be smart in realizing that locking them to verizon has harmed their sales of the device. it's 2013 and ppl are still asking if it will work in their country and holding out for a droid 5 which should be due sometime at the end of the year into the beginning of the new year. for motorola to completely drop qwerty slider would be the worst about turn for a company to make who claims to be reinventing itself. there's enough of those tablet phones.. theyre all starting to look the same.. thin and lame! i like the solid feel of my droid4. the new s4s etc dont even interest me in the least even with their higher specs theyre pointless. there's only so much u can do on a powerful device with a touchscreen keyboard before it becomes a hinderance.. symbols, arrow keys and numbers all accessible as on a hardware keyboard is an advantage over software keyboards taking up 30% of the viewable screen.. like i said.. lame.
as it is motorola NEEDS a droid 5 because there will be nothing to set them apart from the competition. all fones are now flat, all have larger battery capacity, theyre even coming waterproof too and with higher specs, infrared ports and other sensors.
if motorola does the same thing with a qwerty slider it will destroy the competition. otherwise, theyll just be filing themselves with all the weeds in the field.

Can't Decide on what Android to get. Any ideas?

Quite simply i have decided its about time i get myself a new 'high' end android phone. I have owned the HTC Magic (32b) for some time now and while i do like it very much i feel its a bit week when it comes to multi tasking and new versions of android i feel arnt completely stable on it as they just are not built for this old phone.
So anyway its time for me to pick a new phone, but im just not sure which to go for. I like the look of either the Nexus one, Motorola Milestone or the HTC desire all for there own reasons.
Both the Nexus One and HTC desire to me seem to be pretty much the same apart from that the Nexus One has already got froyo and that the HTC desire has sense UI and optical track ball thingy.
While the Motorola Milestone i like very much for its qwerty keyboard and i believe it has the best GPU (am i right?). The Motorola is also the cheaper of the phones which is always a plus.
So my question to all of you is what are your thoughts on the different phones and which would you pick? are there any other features i should take into thought? or other phones?
I like the Nexus One and the Desire.
I forget it the Desire has a snapdragon processor as well? If yes, I'd go for that one. The body is really really sexy and the optical trackball is a step ahead of the trackball on the n1.
However, I really like the N1. IMO it's one of the most underrated phones out there. Battery life is 12 to 14 hours moderate / light use. One thing to be aware of, the speaker is tiny and the phone doesn't ring very loud compared to the Blackberry I had before.
As far as I remember the HTC Desire lacks the active noise cancellation and the triband HSDPA/WCDMA. I don't know what exactly you are planing to use your new phone, but I (considering the huge amount of time I spend internet browsing), I'd take the Nexus One.
I'd also take into consideration the fact that the Nexus comes with a bit more powerful battery than the HTC Desire. I own a HTC Magic too. Every time I keep my wi-fi connection on for more than 2-3 hours, the battery runs out and the phone shuts down, which can is sometimes very annoying.
thank you all for your input ^^ i have noticed that four people have clicked 'other' it would be nice if you do this to post something telling me which phone you would rather have
I think the Samsung Galaxy S is going to be the new king of android... I have the same problem - can't make my mind what to get.
If I would go for Android I certainly will wait for this one...

But I´m not going for Android
IMO the best Android phone is the EVO 4G, if you´re on Sprint. It all depends on what you are going to do with your phone, do you really need the 1 Ghz processor and such HIGH-end specifications?
Hi there
First off, I came across this info while researching phones a while ago (~6 weeks ago), but I'm pretty sure that this is STILL the case.
You mentioned the Motorola Milestone as a potential candidate. I would recommend you NOT get this phone. This is because while the Motorola Droid can be rooted and use ROMs, be overclocked (to 800MHz! get that one lol) etc, the Milestone's bootloader is locked down by Motorola which means that you can NOT install 'custom' ROMs on it, you're stuck with the stock ROM (at least until Motorola actually decide to open up the bootloader).
It's not a matter of waiting for someone to crack it either; apparently they've signed the bootloader and not released their signing keys (sorry, I'm not sure of the technical details), which makes it pretty much impossible to load up anything because it will check the signature before loading anything.
So while I don't really have a real suggestion, I may have narrowed down your choices. Do investigate thoroughly if the next phone you buy really is 'open' or just 'open for marketing/advertising purposes'!
Happy hunting

thanks dude, i think that pretty much knocks the milestone out of the running, got to love my custom roms
Sure np
Do make sure your next phone doesn't have such a stupid restriction.
I'm looking for a new phone as well, even though the one I have is perfectly fine and zippy (HTC Hero GSM with the Cronos ROM) haha
The one thing I AM sure of is that I definitely require a physical keyboard! Touchscreen isn't good for hooves like mine lol
Guess I'll watch this thread too, for suggestions
I noticed you wrote milestone instead of droid.
do not get the milestone.
If you can, try to get an unlocked droid (I for one need a keyboard), but don't get a milestone since motorala locked it up making it unrootable (so far).
besides that I'd get a N1, I've played with a friends and it's pretty sleek, very fast and all around great

As im in the UK i cant easly get a droid, and alot of the ones on ebay that say they are a droid are the milestone, is there any easy way of telling them apart?
I was a former milestone user, and the draconian attitude of Motorola regarding the bootloader led me to swap it for an HD2. Now I am in rom-flashing heaven. The HD2 is miles ahead of the milestone in terms of customizability and usability.
BUt to answer your question, AFAIK, Droid = CDMA while Milestone = GSM. So if you are using a GSM network in UK, a Droid is out of the question, and you can only use the (locked) Milestone.
Im also in the same bandwagon, observing the android landscape, looking for what phone to get (looks like android for the HD2 is gonna take awhile). Since HTC has yet to announce a GSM version of the EVO, the Samsung Galaxy is looking MIGHTY tempting. Cant beat a 4-inch super AMOLED screen.
if you CANT wait, then just get the Desire or the Nexus One. Im more partial to the Desire myself. I like Sense.

the TMobile MyTouch Slide is suppose to have a great physical KB. I hated the Hero's KB, in fact that's partly why I didn't get it. I tried the KB on the iPhone (amazing KB) and on the HTC EVO (really, really nice) and you'd be surprised how you get used to it.
Hope that helps.

That's exactly right.
And since there aren't any CDMA-based networks in the UK, the Droid isn't an option at all.
In the UK, I can't really see why anyone would take the Nexus One over the Desire.
All you do is end up limiting yourself to Vodafone with their crappy web bundle and poor 3G coverage.

Well.. I'm really disappointed. I mean REALLY. When you compare the hardware it's almost nothing new.
HTC Desire S vs HTC Desire
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3776&idPhone2=3077
I'm a HTC fan since many years and it's hard for me to say this, but HTC is really behind now and is only trying to make money and sell us BULL****!!!
Just see the comparison and you will know what I'm talking about... minor changes. NOT EVEN THE PROCESSOR HAS CHANGED!!!
The Incredible S is also nothing new under the sun. Not even a dual-core processor... No 1GB of ram.
Seriously, HTC, WHAT THE ****?
The hardware specs of Galaxy S II can eat HTC's newest devices for breakfast.
And HTC really made a big mistake because right now it's no more about the software, it's the hardware that matters. Android is almost the same on all devices and with a community like XDA everything (costumization) is possible.
RIP HTC, I will never buy a device from you anymore.
I feel pretty let down by HTC's showing at MWC.
I was expecting an Atrix/Galaxy 2 rival (aka the Pyramid) and they show us unibodied versions of phones that have been out since last year with slightly bigger batteries running Gingerbread.
I don't know whether to jump ship to the Atrix or to wait and see if they produce the Pyramid at a later date.
I'm not particularly interested in the Tablet, and if I was to get one i'd get the Moto Xoom or Samsung Galaxy 10.1 as they are pretty much the same as each other anyway with stock Honeycomb, rather than a massively skinned and shelled Gingerbread device.
HTC needs to stop trying to insist upon making Sense the core product they are selling and start making some big leaps in hardware, and soon..
Fail
I was expecting a dual core android 2.4 phone with physical keyboard and a android 3.0 tablet. None arrived...
Very dissapointed.
Was hoping for the Pyramid - something to rival the Galaxy S2 in terms of hardware specs.
I really want a HTC and was waiting for this news to determine how to proceed.
If you want the technology the Galaxy S2 seems to be the handset to get, but Samsungs TouchWiz just doesn't even compare to HTC's sense.
For me its the Desire S for now.....I need Sense in my life.
WHERE IS THE PYRAMID!!!!!!
remind me again why i should get rid of my N1?
oh yeah nothing... HELLO!!!! HTC!!! are you even trying anymore?
the only thing turing me off of the Atrix was the possible locked boot loader, and wanting to see what HTC was about to push out....
now that we have one thing off the list.... i feel that i may be leaving HTC for a while until they get their act together... maybe thats what they need... sales not to climb like they have, an actual slap to their bottom line that says consumers are done buying the same thing over and over... but sadly, even with the numbers we have, until the masses relize this, HTC sale numbers will continue to rise and no real reason for them to change...
in their eyes, if it aint broke, why fix it?
for me, its a total dissapointment.
i mean WTF ARE THEY THINKING
its the same ****.. AGAIN
there is still no phone that would be a REAL upgrade to my HD2..
i hoped for a new flagship.. i hoped it so bad..
i hoped for something that would frag all others away.. but they stay at the same level.. just to get even more money out from the same old **** >.>
only good thing of htc this time was the tablet. but thats it, and i guess they will overprice it, so i won't get it
i'll stick to my HD2. **** you HTC, u idiots
Sent from my HD2
like all of you, I'm very disappointed... where is my Pyramid!!?
Meh, totally under-whelming.
Build quality of the Desire S sounds nice, and i wouldn't mind having one, but it's not specced any higher than my N1 and of course is full of 'Sense' crap which i'd have to nuke from orbit before using the thing.
im really thinking of totaly switching to moto now
the atrix and the xoom tab are just too cool...
and more sexy.
Whats up Guys @ HTC
Every Smartphone producer shows their flagships at MWC this week, and HTC???
Not even one word about the Pyramid is in planning?
Sure we have to wait...
(it was the same with the Snapdragon 1GHz Processor, the TG01 was 4 months before the HD2 out)
And im pretty sure the wait was worth it!
So now we can buy soon (non HTC ):
- Many Dual core (even different Processors) Phones
- 3D Display Phones
- Ultra bright Display ( 700 Nit - Daylight usable) Phones
- Ultra thin and light (Dual Core) Phones (~8,5mm)
And whats coming from HTC? - only a "Sense" with streaming, and an "new" Facebook Button
Where is the Successor of the HD2
Come on HTC, you have to be the carriers of technology, dont get lost in Software ...
Phones are still made out of Hardware!!!
Give the people a Dream - a Dream we want to wait for :
Oh, and this will be such an Dream:

The Galaxy S II has some fantastic hardware, but I decided because of the complaints people have about software updates etc that I would wait and see what HTC had on offer before making up my mind. Having seen it I have to wonder what exactly are they thinking? Sure they're well built phones, but why do they feel satisfied in pushing out fairly old hardware.

Of course. It may well be that they thought a more reasonably priced (if indeed they are reasonably priced) phone would be just what the market needs. It just seemed remarkably out of place for them to wax lyrical about phones that are remarkably similar to their current generation except with new software.
HTC should really make Sense downloadable through market as a launcher instead. I just hate it. It's ugly and doesn't really make a difference for me.
Regarding the new phones there is nothing really impressive. The new Tegra2 dual core phones that are coming out (LG and Motorola) will most likely blow any of those HTC phones away. I believe they also have integrated geforce graphics so nothing should really be an issue on those phones.
My Wildfire have been a disappointment so I wouldn't even consider a HTC phone again unless I was 100% certain I could make it good.
One devices than can beat the Desire HD?
I stopped paying attention to smartphones a long time ago.
But the HTC Flyer actually catches my attention as a useful Android tablet for once. No Honeycomb is a bummer (Android is already too fragmented!), but it does have an N-trig DuoSense digitizer and apps to use it with. More than I can say for a certain other US$800 Android tablet.
Maybe I won't have to keep looking specifically at Windows Tablet PCs for a viable pen and paper alternative.

If you've already seen the Xiaomi M1 announcement about a month ago, well, forget it, because Xiaomi has already made some significant changes since then. What we've just learned from today's Beijing launch event is that the M1 -- now officially "Xiaomi Phone" -- no longer packs a 1.2GHz dual-core chip; instead, it's been given a bump to a Qualcomm MSM8260 SoC, thus becoming the first Chinese phone to sport a 1.5GHz dual-core chip. As part of the Snapdragon package, the phone is also powered by a powerful Adreno 220 graphics processor, which will no doubt make good use of the phone's 1GB RAM and a staggering 4GB ROM. Oh, and that ¥2,600 (about US$410) price tag? It's now ¥1,999 ($310), and will be available for pre-order on August 29th for October delivery. Read on for more surprises!
Update: We've just been informed that there will also be a 1.2GHz version available for an even cheaper price!
Update 2: Our hands-on post is up!
Xiaomi Phone with MIUI OS: a $310 phone with 1.5GHz dual-core SoC and other surprises
Unlike most phones with a 1400mAh or 1500mAh battery these days, the Xiaomi Phone gets a ginormous 1930mAh cell instead, and we're promised to get two days worth of real-life usage out of it -- CEO Lei Jun emphasised the "real-life" part, so we shall see. Another surprise -- albeit an odd one -- is that this phone supports both GPS (with A-GPS) and Russia's GLONASS, meaning President Medvedev can navigate around his country just fine while updating his Weibo Twitter.
As for the rest, you get a 4-inch 480 x 854 LCD courtesy of Sharp (LCD for better outdoor performance, and 4 inches for Asian ergonomics), three touch buttons below the screen, a customisable "Mi key" (camera shutter or Weibo; long press for home screen), an eight megapixel camera with an F2.4 lens, and a dual antenna design that plays well with any kind of grip (obviously a little wink at Apple). Dimension-wise we're looking at 125mm x 63mm x 11.9mm, weighing 149g or 5.3 ounces -- just a tad heavier than the iPhone 4. As for accessories, we're told that there will cases in at least seven bright colors, along with spare batteries of the same set of colors (that's how awesome Xiaomi is).
Of course, let's not forget the real star here: the MIUI (pronounced "mee-you-eye") OS, which is a low-level custom UI based on Android 2.3.5. There's no question about MIUI's rapidly increasing popularity in recent years (Xiaomi quoted a user base of about 500,000), but if you insist on trying other Android flavors on Xiaomi's hardware, then you'll be pleased to know that this phone lets you flash whatever firmware you like.
If you're starting to doubt the Xiaomi Phone's reliability, you shouldn't -- we've been told that this phone's been thoroughly torture-tested in the lab, simulating two years worth of usage. "This is why we take much longer than shanzhai factories to make a phone," said the CEO. We'll see about that in two months time, really looking forward to it.

This thing is pretty awesome. Look at the price for the hardware people...$300...1.5Ghz dual core. Good camera, decent screen. Big battery, customizable....hell if it supports US 3G bands, that's make it an instant sell.
Can you put CM7 on it?

i'm assuming that means unlocked bootloader and superuser capabilities. and given the awesomeness of this phone it will be a /very/ short wait for cm7 to support this phone. i'm guessing the dev community will be huge if this phone delivers on it's promised awesomeness
I am extremely interested in this phone.
I find it interesting that the price point that this phone comes in at is just a little more then most of our new phones in the US with a 2 year contract!
Talk about getting ripped off!

Just looking for some insight on phones coming out. I love my nexus s 4g. The gs3 sounds good.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda app-developers app
From all the phones I've used, I liked the Galaxy Nexus most (although I do prefer the Nexus S for being able to use UMS transfer mode, having higher sound quality and not having an oversized screen).
Selling my Nexus and buying the S3 was one of the decision I regretted due to:
-not getting fast updates and variates of stock roms like the Nexus
-poor built quality, even comparing to the Galaxy Nexus
-the stock Jelly Bean on the Nexus was a better and smoother experience for me than Touchwiz on a quadcore processor.
Seems like you are on Sprint, I heard the CDMA version of Galaxy Nexus have very poor radio so skip that, not to mention they always get updates a few months later than the GSM version. But if you do plan to get another Samsung phone, such as a CMDA S3, ask in their forum first if they have any signal issues.
So maybe the S3 is your best choice if you don't mind the built quality. The renamed HTC One X for Sprint may be a good choice, but honestly I am used to how open and easy it is to root and unlock Samsung phones, I can't deal with HTC and Sense, but I know I'm biased.
Rumor is Google will announce the new LG Nexus the end of October, but I guess its too late by then and the CDMA version if available would probably be till next year anyway. The LG Optimus G is supposed to have excellent built quality. Sprint will be selling it, it's basically a flagship device, the the Qualcomm S4 Pro chip is supposed to be super fast, they'll be a 13MP camera (for Sprint model, AT&T is 8MP), 32gb of storage, 2GB ram, etc. It seems like people like to slate the LG brand, but on paper it looks like a very compelling device.
Or maybe its time to move to GSM network where there are more choices to choose from. I'm looking to move away from Samsung too since their built quality of recent phones has really turn me off. I wouldn't blame you if you get an iPhone5 and resell it to get an Android phone and some profit in the process.

This. my next phone will be on a gsm network and will not be purchased from a carrier. I'm tired of my phone being held prisoner. And the part about the CDMA updates is true. Sprint got both ICS and JB several months after t-mo. If you want early updates, this is the carrier to have a subsidized. They get push notifications as soon as google pushes the source to AOSP. Personally I'd still rather buy it from google directly, but there's nothing wrong with a t-mo subsidized device either. The updates will come at the same time.
You can check the review for the LG Optimus G by mobiletechreview on youtube. But it seems the Sprint version won't be available until nov 11th, but preorder open at nov 1st. The ATT version seems better though due to having microsd slot and from experience ATT have faster network and faster LTE too. The Sprint version has 13mp camera though.
If you are used to the Nexus S substantial dev support (after all these freakin' years!) then the only natural path is really the Galaxy Nexus. Even the support for the SII has slowed down. I suspect it will be the same with the S3. I cannot stand mfg overlays like TW or Sense.
Can you hold onto your NS and wait to see what the new Nexus is all about?
I'm waiting for the next Nexus phone -since it should be right around the corner. If it wasn't for that though, I'd be looking at the GSIII, Razr Maxx, or G Nex.

Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
Paranoid Android (2.2.2 - 4.1.2)
Marmite Kernel (5.0 - Bedalus)
Ondemmand (Screen On) (800/100)
Ondemmand (Screen Off) (400/100)
Deep Idle (N/A - CFQ)
BLX (98 - Inverted Apps)
Black Exodus (Stock Voltage)
No doubt that nexus family will continue a tradition with a excelent quality new device.
However my biggest disappointment of nowadays phone development companies is a price of our beloved engineering jewels. Any thoughts. How mutch it will cost? I'm a big enthusiast of high end smartphones but personally not ready to sacrifice my halfmonth salary.

Seemed more like a question to me, so moved to Q&A.
Lg makes great phones. Loved lg! Hate Samsung though. I'm going for either the photon Q(its a monster) or this new nexus. I juuust got my nexus from a friend.... had a Samsung transform. Horrible hardware, phone was verry verrry durable though. Masks sure you test it out before and make sure it doesn't randomly brick like most of today's hardware

You should use more high end Samsung devices beside writing them off, the transform is a very old and low end phone on cdma network. Trying to compare it to the Photon Q is like comparing a Ford Tempo to a Ferrari.
I got it when it was new, actually decent. Ask anyone and they will tell you that the s3 is plasticity. The s2 had a tendency to randomly brick because of the emmc freaking out, that's just to name a few. I wouldn't mind an s3, just saying the quality of Samsung has gone away. And if at all possible I'm going to avoid them, bad, no, horrible track record.

sorry for stealing the scene... i'm going to change my Nexus S in the next few weeks and i narrowed down the list of my wishes to the following 3 phones:
- Gnexus: would have to buy it used around the 300$ mark / will combine with a 2 years contract around 30$+
- Gnote: would buy it for 50$ on 2 years contract (30$)
- HTC One X: would get it for free on 2 years contract (30$)
What would you suggest me? i'm a Flash Addict fallen in love with paranoidandroid and JB and ATM my heart points toward the Gnote

How did Samsung do it?

I am curious how a big company like Samsung managed to cut through the crap and make an uncrippled phone.
Back in 2009 I got a Samsung SGH-F266 from Bell and while it was cute and stable in was so crippled and locked down after using it for a while I ended up hating it more than any phone, except one Motorola phone in 2004 which shouldn't have even passed basic QC testing let alone get released into the wild.
The SGH-F266 wouldn't even turn on properly without an active sim card. It wouldn't let you assign your own MP3s to ring tones to protect ringtone businesses. You couldn't even transfer an image from your computer to use as a background on your screen .... only pictures taken with the phone could be used. The Media Player app played tracks nicely but finding them was another matter as the phone directed you to payed on-line services by default .... finding and playing your own track took about 10 click wait clicks, while connecting to paid music took one. This phone was designed for the phone carriers not me.
I thought Samsung was going to be dead in the water at the time and swore I would never buy a Samsung phone again. Frankly I gave up on "smartphone"model almost altogether as I thought it would be quite impossible for any company to cut the crap.
Then my Goddaughter showed me her HTC Legend phone and Android and within a couple of minutes I saw the future of mobile computing. It was almost 100% cripple free .... I had a HTC Desire Z in about a week and I really liked it. It was almost 100% cripple free ..... HTC and Google made a phone for me instead of the carriers. Sure Bell forced a lot of crapware down my throat that forced me to root my phone, but the end product was a phone that I used until it died and had no urge to upgrade.
Sadly HTC is crippling their phones again by not supporting removable storage but I owned a HTC One S for a while and it was a good phone.
Then finally I got over my distaste for Samsung and got a Galaxy3S. I really can't find the slightest evidence of crippling on this phone. Even locked I can remove or disable any crap I don't want thanks to Google and Android 4.11 (Bell must be pissed). It supports removable storage and battery. It isn't rooted and I believe the boot loader is locked but for actually using the phone I have had no desire to root or unlock.
How did Samsung change their corporate mentality so much. Greed? Foresight? Blackmail of the carriers?.... Surely Google and HTC played their part too and perhaps they started it.
I hope this isn't a temporary bubble that breaks as soon as a new monopoly emerges.
Wow.. that was a lot..
Thanks for sharing, but why share at all?

But they are with the Exynos chip which they refuse to release proper documentation for and is causing developers to leave the brand in hords. Many are moving to Sony or the nexus due to samsung going back on their word.
As for the OP. Samsung didnt do a bad job with the s3 minus some coming with the exynos chip.
Updates and better support. Support doesn't have to be good, but it's certainly better than HTC's and their crap. They get updates out, and the only others who do that are Google and Sony.

Well I have 2 Samsung products: Galaxy Tab 10.1 P7500 and Galaxy Pocket S5300 and I have had not one problem with them.
I have installed many ROMs in them and they are both very good...and all working great.
I think the problems lie in those who just have no idea whats going on and think they can mess around with their phones.
Smartphones are mini computers and should be treated with care and if you are going to start upgrading...rooting..romming etc you should try to get a better idea of what you are up to.
Commercials play a big part in it too and making the people wait in anticipation and big unveilings help too. How you advertise it play a big role

Samsung is by far the only company I know (Aside from the nexus lines) to release 2 major upgrades for their phone. I.E. The Galaxy S2. It started out with Gingerbread but it has official samsung support up to 4.1 now and they're going to stop after 4.2. No other company has done that IIRC, most only go up 1 major upgrade then focus on their next phone.
However the downside and the downfall of Samsung in the open source world is that the Exynos chip they use so much is pretty much closed source and this cripples developers. So much so that the CyanogenMOD team has almost completely dropped support for Samsung phones because of this.
As someone that has been hanging around here for a while, and using HTC phones since the Windows Mobile days, will know that HTC has been locking down their phones in one way or another since before Android was even a mainstream mobile OS. Back on WinMo, you had to HardSPL your phone to put custom ROMs on it. HTC keeps ramping up their security measures, and what you see on the latest devices is not a drastic departure from what happened in the past, but just another iteration or evolution of it. The OPs Desire Z was far from an open device, and it took a while until S-off was achieved.
HTC was a big innovator in the early days of Android, making the first Android phone (HTC Dream) and the first Nexus phone. Samsung mostly played it safe in the early days, but eventually saw the tide was coming, and rode it, investing heavily in Android. A lot of what you see as the open nature of Samsung devices is inherent in Android. Probably more a case of Samsung following Google's requirements, and copying what the competition was doing on their devices; rather then some kind of altruistic awakening.
As far as features, what one person may consider "crippling", may not mean the same to another. Obviously, the intention is not to cripple the device. HTC (or Apple for that matter) would argue that most people value slimness and smooth design over SD slots and removable battery covers. Of course, not everyone will agree. And some of what HTC is doing might just be categorized as being a copy cat to many of the things that Apple has done to the smartphone.
Sammy has simply decided to take a different industrial design philosophy. They don't push the envelope in this category, although they do leave in a lot of features like the OP points out. But to me, their physical designs are uninspired and a bit bland, relying heavily on cheap looking/feeling plastics.
In the end, its just different approaches on how to design the same type of product. And Samsung's success probably has more to do with the fact they were a much larger company to begin with, with a huge advertising machine.
Redpoint 73 ....What a great post
From the OP
It drove me crazy trying to unlock my original Desire Z ..... I was on the bleeding edge as an end user. I have no desire to unlock my Samung S3 because Google had the balls to put in a working system to disable, hide or remove stuff the carrier forces on the phone... what a novel concept ....
Another interesting thing that happened as Android got established is that using cheap long distance calling cards actually got feasible because the dialing pause and wait codes started to work properly. Now I have one button call of my bro in the states and can talk for an hour for a buck instead of the 100$ the carriers charge.
I would argue that not having any kind of removable storage is crippling. Not supporting either USB to Go or microSD severely limits the user and forces use of on-line services which cost money (bandwidth) to use. Text and data files are fine for Dropbox ...... music and pictures are nowhere near as convenient as having them on a microSD card, unless you actually like the idea of syncing. Apple Phones and HTC phones are crippled for music and pictures and I think that that is part of the business model.
