Obviously it can give us great data speed. Was wondering if we were on LTE like does it help call quality/service?

I believe eventually LTE will be used to transmit calls over data but as of now, No, I don't think so.
I think calls and text are still over Cellular (1x), thats why MMS still go slow I think, but they're working on VoIP. I think it's a matter of time.
Thank you for the responses, appreciate it The more I learn about this phone stuff the better.

Those without unlimited minutes will take comfort in the fact that T-Mobile will not count wi-fi calling against your minutes starting 5/11:

This just plain kicks butt!
I bee happy!
Awesome. Man my gf would really benefit that. She constantly goes over her minutes and we have a great wifi connection here.
+1 reason why Tmo rocks

ooh good question that I want to know the answer to. If you find out, can you pm me (and I'll do the same). mm kay? thanks
Anyone got wifi calling? this sounds like a reason to get it back. I should have froze it andnot deleted it..
This is huge in my opinion. Great selling point for those of us in the cellular industry.

Isn't wifi using my bandwidth
I don't understand how t-mobile could count this against your minutes in the 1st place. Are you using their system in any way when you are on a wifi call? It's like skype right? Your using your broadband providers bandwidth. Why should you pay tmobile at all? If anything your're saving their bandwidth when making calls on wifi.
Or do I have this all wrong? It's moot for me cause I'll be on the unlimited plan when these activate tomorrow.
But when I first saw mention of the wifi calling, it never occured to me that Tmobile was charging for it.
Same thing with surfing the web on wifi...you are taking the strain off their system.
They use your bandwidth to an endpoint they own and then switch the call normally over their networks.
With WiFi connectivity you don't traverse their servers so it doesn't cost them.

....meaning Skype?
That would not be correct. Calls still have to be routed through their network--through their PBXs and switches.

that is the old feature. The new one will be completely free if your phone is compatible with wifi calling.
Ok so i'm having an issue, I use my phone to tether as my main internet connection. Before with my x2 i was able to turn off CDMA and use EVDO only. So text wouldn't cut off my tethering date. On this phone i'm in EVDO only mode but i still get text messages :/
I dont think i can get phone calls in evdo only but the text still mess up the internet. This is weird
This phone does data and you can use the phone at the same time. Not sure about it while tethering, shouldn't be a difference though.

I was under the impression that this feature only works while on 4g is that not the case?

Always works. Its a qualcomm SoC thing. Rezound and thunderbolt could as well. Kind of silly to jump to conclusions like that without actually seeing if it hurts anything. I've answered phone calls while playing black light online.

Its not really silly, with the x2 if you got a text or a phone call you lost internet. Everything i read said it was because of the verizon network. so i figured it was every phone. Just what i read and was told by people on here and verizon.
New to Verizon.. if I understand correctly you're saying this phone can do voice and data? Even on 3g ?
I thought Verizon's network couldn't do that. If the previous statement is correct then can we use the international dialers that have video built into them ?

Like I said, its a qualcomm SoC (system on chip) thing. What I'm saying is silly is that you already claimed the txt messages hurt your tethering.

I also came from ATT so this is a nice surprise for me.
as for the dialers, I know there are dialer apps out there (which generally come from non US phones) that have video calling features built into them, is there anyone watching this thread who could tell me if it would be possible to get one and make use of it? and would it require root to replace the dialer app? (I'm guessing it would)
thanks
Just recently moved and I have no service with T Mobile so I might be switching to ATT. Is there any ROMs or a way to make wifi calls with ATT without using Skype or another app?

Setup google voice and use an app called GrooveIP (http://goo.gl/zDVm8).
That's what I use when I'm outside the coutry to call fro free.
You can receive calls and make calls with just wifi (even hotel room). It's one of the best app I found
if you flash cm/aokp you should be able to use "internet calling" aka sip. There are a few other sip based apps out there that will let you make calls but not with the normal dialer.

I have a microcell as well. I am running Embyro 5.3 with the UCLF6 baseband and the 3.0.42 Cymbaline- RD04-2.7 kernel. I think the microcell is $20 a month for unlimited phone calls. It's running at 3G. I got it before I* switched to cable for my internet access. Works like a charm and I never get close to using up my data plan. I usually run about a 7400 on the AnTuTu benchmark also.

There are a couple "plans" for the microcell. One is free and uses your existing plan's minutes. The other is the one you mentioned. And it is only 3G, but 4.5mbps is still decent just for a phone.

Yes, but they now use Ringto, another free voip provider, which works just about as well as Google Voice.
Would anyone be willing to explain exactly what the modem zips control? I'm not sure what the right file for me would be. I am looking for good 4G and Wi-Fi reception. KJ6 doesn't send MMS for me and LB6 has crappy speed on data. I'm using KB5 at the moment with OK results.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
The modem primarily controls the functions of the phone that use the carrier's network. At a high level, that includes registration, cell handoff, voice calls, carrier data, and sending and receiving SMS and the "header" for MMS. It will impact the audio chain for voice calls, "taking it over" for the duration of the call.
The primary control of WiFi is in the kernel, drivers, and Android framework.
Posted from my SGS4G, thanks to Team Acid development
Thanks. It was hard to find that info.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
I do fine the modem seems to have different effects on GPS, but maybe it's more related to the A-GPS data or how well or fast it can receive it from the carrier.
Is there a modem that anyone can recommend for use?

Not knowing where you use the phone primarly is hard to determine. The best idea would be test them all out. Plus you might get crappy results with one and somebody else in your area gets super results. A lot of this depends on how good the internals are. My phone gets crap results on kj6 but a friends phone is fine.
I'd like to disable LTE while I'm at work because we don't get reception for it here. It then believe it kills the battery because it's constantly trying to find a signal and flips from 4g to 3g, etc.
I'm running CleanROM 8.2, which is Android 4.3. I've seen other posts that say use Phone Info, but the app crashes. I've also seen to dial a special number, but that number doesn't do anything.
Is there an easy way to disable 4g LTE with later versions of Android?
Thanks!

You should still be able to receive calls and texts because I do that all the time on my phone and those things still work. If it does't then I don't know what to tell you.
