[Q]Modem help - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Would anyone be willing to explain exactly what the modem zips control? I'm not sure what the right file for me would be. I am looking for good 4G and Wi-Fi reception. KJ6 doesn't send MMS for me and LB6 has crappy speed on data. I'm using KB5 at the moment with OK results.

The modem primarily controls the functions of the phone that use the carrier's network. At a high level, that includes registration, cell handoff, voice calls, carrier data, and sending and receiving SMS and the "header" for MMS. It will impact the audio chain for voice calls, "taking it over" for the duration of the call.
The primary control of WiFi is in the kernel, drivers, and Android framework.

Thanks. It was hard to find that info.

I do fine the modem seems to have different effects on GPS, but maybe it's more related to the A-GPS data or how well or fast it can receive it from the carrier.

Is there a modem that anyone can recommend for use?

Not knowing where you use the phone primarly is hard to determine. The best idea would be test them all out. Plus you might get crappy results with one and somebody else in your area gets super results. A lot of this depends on how good the internals are. My phone gets crap results on kj6 but a friends phone is fine.

First time flashing

So its my frist time flashing a captivate and every thing went fine thanks to the video i watched it was a little harder than than flashing mt old att tilt. I put on cog.4.3 and it seems alot faster than stock 2.2. There is only one problem on the task bar on top it show i no longer have g3 it just shows a H any insight on this would be great. Thanks

H is faster than 3g. Enjoy! The modems unlock what your carrier blocks
A simple search would have told you this as well

yes h is hspa(high speed packet assist), well on cog i think it is hsdpa(download only) while upload is 3g, that is an att limitation for the captivate, if you use a non att kernel and modem you will gain full hspa but will loose bluetooth calling and posibly some loss in call volume or quality.
if you use a ported rom modem and kernel from one of the many other galaxy s phones(i9000/m,t959/d,i9010armani,i9088 or a combination of those) like most are roms are you will have full hspa and bluetooth calling and on some roms bluetooth voice commands. and you will have a slight performance advantage if it is a 2.2.1 rom but may loose some call quality depending on specific combination and modifications.
Have yet to try my bluetooth headphones i unfortunately i left them at work but having working Bluetooth is a must cause i use it to listen to music all day at work will ill have to check that out when i get there

Modem obeservation

So i hear (read) all of these people talking about the issue with the KJ6 modem and not being able to send long SMS. Well, i always scratched my head at this because i never had the problem. I would send 160+ character SMS all day long (well not all day, that's weird).. every now and then i'd get a message fail, but for the most part it worked.
Then i figured it out.... sort of.
The signal bar on my phone, when connected to the network is usually blue.. the 4g will be too... but sometimes its not.. sometimes it's gray...like Borats suite...sorry couldn't resist.
Anyway, when it is blue...i can send long sms.. when it's gray...i can not. So when i am "locked on" to the network i don't seem to have a problem...has anyone else noticed this or am i an anomaly?

The color of the bars and network type just means it is or isn't connected to google servers. Usually grey meaning you arent while any other color means you are
Makes sense.... But why can I send long sms on kj6 and others can't?

I've always been able to send long SMS on kj6. Actually back when there was a new leak every week I was able to send long SMS on all of them. With any kernel I was ever on.

It all depends on your area and how much signal you get at alot of places. I, personally, have never had issues with the KJ6 modem myself

So your saying the problem some people had wasn't necessary due to the modem as they thought, but due to their signal strength. Which of course the modem has an effect on. Or so they say, I've had about the same service no matter what modem I use, maybe the KC area is just a good place.

I can't send long sms thru KJ6. The only one that's worked for me is KD1 and KI3 which I'm using now. I am looking for anyone in Las Vegas area to tell me which one works better out here especially in casinos lol

Same here. Also, the WiFi signal is awful for me with KJ6, and it drains the battery.
I was getting very good results with Sidekick's KJ2 modem. Fixed long SMS issue, and also made instant and huge improvement for WiFi signal strength.
Unfortunately, cannot flash it on CM7 ROM, which I like very much otherwise. I hope it will be made possible one day to flash Sidekick's modems on CM7.
the sidekick modems didn't work very well for me, and had a hard time locking on to a Tmobile signal inside my condo.
KD1 and KI1 were the only modems that could hold a signal at my condo, but the latest KJ6 has been a tad better than both of those for me.
A lot of it depends on your area. Just have to keep trying different modems until you find one that works for you.

Wifi calling for ATT?

Just recently moved and I have no service with T Mobile so I might be switching to ATT. Is there any ROMs or a way to make wifi calls with ATT without using Skype or another app?

Why don't you wanna use an external app? Wouldn't that save a bunch of time?

You can also get a microcell, they are a life saver in low signal areas. Sometimes you can get at&t to comp you one to get you to sign up.

Google voice doesn't support wifi only calling. SMS texts yes.
ATT Galaxy SkyRocket CM9 stable..sent using XDA premium
Setup google voice and use an app called GrooveIP (http://goo.gl/zDVm8).
That's what I use when I'm outside the coutry to call fro free.
You can receive calls and make calls with just wifi (even hotel room). It's one of the best app I found
if you flash cm/aokp you should be able to use "internet calling" aka sip. There are a few other sip based apps out there that will let you make calls but not with the normal dialer.

I have a microcell as well. I am running Embyro 5.3 with the UCLF6 baseband and the 3.0.42 Cymbaline- RD04-2.7 kernel. I think the microcell is $20 a month for unlimited phone calls. It's running at 3G. I got it before I* switched to cable for my internet access. Works like a charm and I never get close to using up my data plan. I usually run about a 7400 on the AnTuTu benchmark also.

There are a couple "plans" for the microcell. One is free and uses your existing plan's minutes. The other is the one you mentioned. And it is only 3G, but 4.5mbps is still decent just for a phone.

Yes, but they now use Ringto, another free voip provider, which works just about as well as Google Voice.

[Q] Will a different radio fix this?

Hi everyone, I'm running CM10.0.0 Skyrocket with UCLD2 modem. I live in Jupiter, FL and when I am traveling through town and pass through areas that switch between HSPA, 3G, and 4G, I often have to toggle airplane mode to get data back. Is this due to my radio? I was doing research in the forum about the various radios and I couldn't find a definitive comparison of the various modems to each other with a chronology of release. I'd guess that newer modems are better, but then I read that sometimes that's not the case. Anyone care to weigh in on why I lose data connection when traveling through different data zones? btw i checked my APN settings and theyre fine.
I too run into the same issue but when I'm at work I know that if you running jb data loss has been known to be an issue with it yes the newer the modem can potentially fix or issue depending on situation best option is test

Sounds like a handoff issue. Try CI3

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Just an update, things still seem good with CI3 compared to my old radio. Only thing I notice is it doesn't really like 4G data, it'll say 4G and have good bars, and I can make and receive calls fine. But if I go online it'll stall, and I'll watch it struggle and then swap to H+ and be fine. That’s the only remaining quirk. Not sure why it's doing that.

I know no one is following this post at this point but I thought I'd post a final update about how i resolved the last issue I mentioned in the post above, just in case someone else has this same issue and searches the forum later.
I fixed my reception with 4G accidentally, i flashed the Lightning Zap v3 kernel to improve battery and lo and behold, reception hand off is fixed!!

Does 4GLTE have any effects on call/text services?

Obviously it can give us great data speed. Was wondering if we were on LTE like does it help call quality/service?

I believe eventually LTE will be used to transmit calls over data but as of now, No, I don't think so.
I think calls and text are still over Cellular (1x), thats why MMS still go slow I think, but they're working on VoIP. I think it's a matter of time.
Thank you for the responses, appreciate it The more I learn about this phone stuff the better.
