Ubuntu is gonna be one another OS for smartphones. It will use the same Linux kernels and drivers but will use its own environment for developing. So for us, it will be like a new interface for our phones...Like using Ubuntu in our Window based PC. They are planning to release new phones which have Ubuntu as their OS. I think even before their release of smartphones, they will be releasing their sources which can be used for existing Android phones.
It's just a initial teaser. Hopefully it will get released by 2014...So long way to go....
P.S - You can register yourself here @ Announcement so that you will be notified just before date is finalized for release.

I don't have words. Simply amazing! Finally a native mobile OS that can work on our device.

The gesture support is very amazing
Only downside will be availability of apps as of now. But hopefully it will gain popularity and apps start flowing in.

The Development work on apps has already started. So by the time the OS is readily available for us, we will a gud volume of apps. And for those who wish to develop apps, you can check it over here.
And one more advantage is that as i said it will be developed in its own platform, it will reduce the Overhead of Java and there by it will be more smoother. Hope there won't be any head swirling smali.

What am i thinking is Tizen is also going to be release ( as humor said) & simply following it, ubuntu is also going to be. so, Android is towards downfall or something else..??

Tizen is a totally different OS. It'd be much harder to port it than Ubuntu for phones. It is said that S4 will be released with Tizen, but I don't think so. They would lose many users because of the lack of apps.

And Tizen is being rumoured for a long time but i dont think they will experiment it with 'S' series phones..Even it was said Bada will be made as a Open source but after Wave-3, i dont see any Bada OS supported phones and u know what, Cyanogenmod has been ported to Wave series phones which had Bada OS and now they are enjoying Jelly Bean in Wave phones. To be frank, Wave series phones had excellent hardwares and now with Cyanogenmod, it wud be superb..CM10

Agreed for Tizen. but somewhere rumored were for Tizen for Wave II & III. but unfortunately Bada OS ported to them. But yes, now what I want is can we port Bada for our device..?? Lols..head scratching..

Why Bada OS? As the specifications satisfied, we can get the ubuntu OS.. Just seen the videos.. It is amazing and they are going to use same android based kernel..
Love to see different OS in our R... Also, just read somewhere that the Tegra 2 device running windows 8 RT..

so we have good chances to get it  :good:???

Yes buddy, just like Bada OS now runnign CM10(android) so we can run there also. But I asked from SIyah Kernel Dev for building the Kernel for us but he simply denied coz he doesn;t have time for us. BTW Selva.simple buddy is working on it. May be we can have it.:fingers-crossed:
If we will have dual booting kernel then WIndows & others ROM can be thinking to port to our device also.
Hey just now see this one -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079869
Meizu ICS ROM ported to HTC HDLeo. check out this one also.

I sent message to ubuntu team and they replay and told me that they are on thier way to announce the software but it still beta till now

Even if we have a dual-booting kernel, we won't have Windows-based OSes. It is totally different.

Agreed for the same buddy. But if it can be done ( as processors & if we get the source over which other did the same) for others then can't it be for us. Means I said, "dual booting" means Android in one hand & MS OS other hand.

DUAL Boot Android and ios5

Hi Friends,
Have anybody tried to dual boot android with ios5. It will be great if someone can do this.
While searching came across this

Any solutions?
I don't think that's possible.

You can't run iOS as a rom because its closed source. It would be impossible to port because all the libs are different even though its based off linux
IOS is based off of Mac OSX which is based off of *Unix*
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Brick using XDA
so the info on the links is just bull**** ?
BUT: it is possible to have your android phone "transformed" to look like ios with miui rom and iphone theme.
that still doesnt give access to the appstore but its as near as we can get to ios looks
Got none of the required devices I would have tried otherwise :/
i have a desire hd but i dont really think this is legit.. probably just some guy hunting payperclicks
This will never be possible. IPhone and android phones havedifferent processor architecture.

It IS possible to dual boot an iPhone with Android and iOS, the project is called iDroid (idroidproject[.]org) but some of the iPhone jail breakers (like @chronic) are creating a linux-based OS (called Magenta) that replicates iPhone OS 1.0, my source says that it currently runs on ARM7 hardware
Magenta is an implementation of Darwin/BSD on top of the Linux kernel. It is made up of a number of kernel and userland components that work together. It is fully binary compatible with iPhone OS 5.0 (as in, it uses the same binary format).

The final goal is probably recreating the iPhone OS 1.0 stack. I think this is a pretty feasible goal, considering the fact that there are so many open source libs that can be used to replace the proprietary libs used by Apple. Just as an example:
* CoreGraphics -> Cairo
-> FreeType
-> libpng/jpg
* Celestial -> Various open source media decoding libs.
* UIKit -> Chamelleon

I think so, they say the aim is to run iOS
The project does not wish to build a platform that can run Apple’s App Store apps; it appears to just aim at running iOS.
Click to collapse
As you can see it isn't for running App Store apps, but if it has root access like a rooted android, then you can just put any app on the device..
Like a Cydia app (for the ones who don't know: Cydia is an App Store that you get when you jailbreak your iPhone)
Dual boot iOS and Android. Hm... why not to try Linux instead? iOS is not flexible as Android and what's the point of it? Also we can start porting Windows 8 and other stuff.

iOS 5 is designed to run only on apple's specified hardware design. It is next to impossible to have apple software running on android hardware, but there have been reports of android running on apple hardware. This all involves a lot of lib tweaking, proper execution of binaries, andjust plain coding genius.

Look at post #9 It IS possible if someone tries to get it on an android with a bit porting of the Magenta-project. And yes it is possible to run android on iPhone (post #9 as well) it is called iDroid (as mentioned in post #9)
here is the source code from cronic, who is an apple dev, who is working on porting it for us, http://crna.cc/ , if any dev is wishing to finish it off with his android intel
why doenst just buy an iPhone ?

For those asking "why?", I found this thread because I would like an Android tablet, but I'm worried I'll want the latest app or game and it will be only on iOS for too long before going to Android. I'd like the best of both worlds, someday (perhaps when iDroid is out of alpha).

If you want the best of both worlds, let me give you some suggestions:
Buy a jailbreak-able iPhone (4S or 4 recommended) jailbreak it on iOS 5.1.1 (if that's the current OS) and then with Cydia you can customize your iPhone as much as you want.
Buy both of them (which I have done) and enjoy
But do not expect iDroid to be stable anytime soon, for now..
That was a bit off-topic, sorry, but I hope this helps!

Mozilla's Boot 2 Gecko OS Project

As you may know, Mozilla (the famous team who brought us Firefox and Thunderbird Mail) is now creating an operating system based on mobile devices such as tablets and cell phones. As an open-source supporter and lover, I'm interested to see where this goes. But how does this operating system have anything to do with us you say? Well, Mozilla is working on QualComm based hardware, and they need phones to test the operating system on. Well, the phones they have choose to use to test Boot 2 Gecko, is none other than the Galaxy S II! Expect we'll be the first ones with a fully-stable working Boot 2 Gecko build. This would mean, that we would have up to two choices for operating systems, Android and Boot 2 Gecko.

Wow, Really looking forward to a new os!

ok guys i found out that a friend of mine is a developer of this project
webos in the current stadium cannot be installed anywhere!
it requires a linux 3.3 kernel not even the old palm devices are able to run webos
just want to add:
my laptop is running the latest ubuntu 12.04 and its kernel is...
3.2.0-29-generic <-- this is lower than the required kernel for a mobile OS ?!
this is a fail -.-
anybody knows which kernel runs on s3 or nexus?
Palm pixi has 600 armv6 processor
It might be possible

Ubuntu like Android is based on Linux so that isn't a surprise that it runs on the Nexus. Linux OS have been dual booted on windows computers for a long time so seeing Android dual-booted on Windows phones isn‘t a surprise either. Also those are dual booted not really replacing your android OS. The pic your talking about is a Ubuntu mobile OS so it should actually replace stock android like a custom rom does. I will also add that iOS is closed source software so you risk legal action doing that. The thread you linked to is closed.

interesting to get it to work on our device, there's a quite detailed tutorial on how to do it here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting but to be honest, i don't think it's worth the effort trying to get it to work on our tabs for now.

LOL, Now how in the world would you know that since there is not yet a single fully functional version of this on any device.?
ubuntu is, like ANdroid, simply yet another derivative of Linux which is based on Unix born in 1969, now 44 years old OS
My brother owns NExus 7, and yes it is smooth and better than android. Though after sometime of use, it starts lagging as its only a DEVELOPER PREVIEW

ignore him, he's just trolling. been doing that on some thread lately. about ubuntu touch, i do agree that it is at least looks much better than android, but it still depends on a lot of android's components. it still uses android's surfaceflinger, the audio/video are still using android's abstraction layer, and the kernel itself is still android's kernel. it would be interesting to see how does it compare to android on our device. someone have ported it to samsung s3, search for the thread to see how it perform on exynos devices.

i don't know if all of the Tab plus are the same, i'm assuming that most of them came with unlocked bootloaders, if there's any locking mechanism at all. i'm pretty sure we will get a running Ubuntu Touch on our devices sooner or later, it's not impossible to be done, but how functional it will be is not for me to talk about since i'm not a developer too.
so, there's a port being goin on for 7.7 and TAB 2.
