[Q] HDMI Out quality issues - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

Has anyone else noticed quality problems with the HDMI out port? I posted the following over on the HBO Go HDMI thread but the more I think about it, the more I think it may be an issue with the phone rather than the apps.
cscotti said:
Big thanks to HBO troll for getting this up and running. I wish HBO would get a clue...
Anyway, the HBO app works great on my Transformer prime outputting to my Samsung TV with only a thin black bar at the bottom.
Of course, I have the same Max Go problems as others trying this on tablets so thought I would just use my Photon Q. Unfortunately, the picture quality is terrible in both HBO Go & Max Go from the Q. It also has a very bright bar on the right side of the screen with the home and other soft buttons. Are there any output resolution tweaks possible to get it looking better?
Thanks again!

What throws me off is that the youtube app output actually looks pretty good. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to improve things!

XOOM HDMI Overscan

Is anyone experiencing this. I have massive amounts of overscan. Also, when HDMI is connected a 20 or so pixel high black bar is added to the the top of the bottom task bar. It also noticeably scrunches everything above it on the XOOM. It is unuseable in HDMI. I thought it was the OC Kernel so I went back to a stock kernel and it still doesnt work. I tried two seperate hdmi cables, I am now at a loss. Please help.
I have not used a dock as I don't have one.
The problem is not with the Xoom, but with your TV. Plasma TV's especially like to overscan so that the picture can be panned around to prevent burn in.
On my 60in Pioneer Elite, I had to change a few settings for the signal to display 1-1. I had to change the input to 'PC mode', and then change the 'Orbiter' to a different value (Orbiter is the automatic panning I mentioned).
Good Luck with your TV's settings. Some cheaper LCD's also overscan, which doesn't make sense because LCD's do not have burn in problems like plasma's.

Panny has a menu setting where you can set 1:1 pixel mode, but it has to detect a 1080p signal.
I forgot to mention that I have never had this problem prior to the xoom with many sources. I have a vizio and can't seem to find any overscan settings. there is one setting that seems to be autoadjusting to the xoom but i cant tweak it to work, only look slightly better. As the xoom is being altered that leads me to think the xoom is to blame. since It's getting squished on the XOOM.
EDIT: It now decided to stop working altogether.. other sources, xbox 360, htpc, file server PC, blu-ray player and AVR receiver are all working. I have read about people who couldn't work HDMI over the xoom. This is the first time I have ever had this problem. On the same TV the evo works flawlessly.
mine looks perfect no overscan but sometimes if you let the orentation change it messes up.

I do not believe the issue to be with the Xoom. I've tried HDMI with different displays, different sizes, and the results are not always equal.
For example, on one older Insignia 19" LCD display with built-in HD tuner, I noticed that several pixels are cut off on the bottom and top. On a different LCD, a 24" Acer, the image displays perfectly. On a 40.5" Sony LCD, I had the same issue as with the Insignia, pixels cut off on the top and bottom.
I could try this on several other HD displays I've got around here, but I'll bet the image issue will be hit and miss.

Not to sound like a ****, but it's your TV. Vizio is an economy brand and they know that the vast majority of people will be happy with overscanning or never know about it. Next time buy a better TV. This problem is just a classic example of economics when it comes to TV's.
I bet if you hooked an iPad 2 to this TV - or heck a PC over HDMI - you would have the same problem. Please do not blame/bash the Xoom for this.
- end rant.
I don't think its his TV, I have a panasonic plasma and it overscans. When ln the home screen the google search. Button is cut off a bit on the left. The right is also cut off too. When I plug in my macbook it doesn't do this, so I'm leaning towards a xoom issue...

Do you plug your MacBook in through HDMI or VGA? A lot of TV's have a PC Input over VGA that does not overscan. I have never seen a plasma that does not overscan on HDMI(by default). This is done so the image can be panned around slowly to prevent screen burn in as I mentioned previously.
Just got my HDMI cable and I'm having the same problem with overscan. I do have a cheapie LCD (max res 1024x768) but I don't have this issue with my PS3 or HTPC. I'm betting that's because I've got the HTPC setup with a 1024x768 res and the TV autodetects the PS3 at 720. I believe the Xoom is having this issue because of the 1024x800 resolution.
OK so after all that, I'm convinced this is a TV issue and I can't see any way to change this in the TV options. Is there any app/fix/hack available to get this working?
Edit: Just had a thought... has anyone tried changing the resolution on the Xoom with the LCD Density Changer app? I don't have root but if that works then the list of reasons I should root just got longer.

Vizio makes bad a$$ T.v.'s I have a 60" Samsung and a 47"Vizio and side by side are almost of equal picture quality.
The only problem I have ever had with the Vizio is with component in - pictures went very green - and I really think it was a problem with the actual device(wii).

I've got a Samsung LED tv and it still does the overscan, has nothing to do with the quality of the tv. And I as well have a Vizio in my bedroom, love the thing, worth every penny. Maybe someone can make an app that'll scale the hdmi out correctly...heres to wishing...

Are you rooted? If so can you try LCD Density Changer? I have no idea if it'll work but it's the only app I can think off that may change the Xoom's screen resolution.

The black menu bar on the bottom rising is not an error. It is intentional so the picture outputted is a perfect 720p mirror. All the Xooms do this. As for the stretching this does not happen for me. You can see this in action on my own display below if you wish.

Didn't know this thread was still going. I know what you are talking about, the display on the XOOM squeezes to attain 1280x720... but it still was overscanning on the TV so I was talking about two seperate issues.
I have the same issue when testing on two samsung LED screens and a Sony bravia lcd. I read on the moto forums that this is an issue with the device not syncing correctly to certain tvs but the last post was end of march saying we were waiting on the update from motorola.
It sort of sucks because it is a good hunk of the screen cut off

[Q] Display response time / ghosting

Has anyone else noticed the large amount of ghosting the Xoom display has? Its very prevalent to me, especially when a red or black object moves across the screen (red angry bird (especially when zoomed in), red icon on homescreen while scrolling (pew pew), black bars between gallery images, etc).
Its bothering me to the point of returning it (and looks like I'll have to eat the 15%/$90 restocking fee at Amazon). I'm wondering if the Asus Eee Pad Transformer or Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9/10.1 will have a better response rate. I know they both should have a better viewing angle with their IPS displays.
I have an ISF certificate and don't see any ghosting...
Really? Could it be I have a defective unit. I just find it hard to believe I would be the only one to have/see this.
Listen enable flash, then open this site on your xoom try to go full screen and tell me your findings.
http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/testsoftware/ghosting.html
Btw I have ghosting as well, but never noticed it on before. Thanks for the heads up. Ill reply back when I get more info.
I have no ghosting at all on my nexus one, the screen size have a huge effect on ghosting btw, but just an fyi.
2 Days ago I've been playing DoodleJump on the Xoom, and noticed the game running faster (you can test this) ofcourse you'll have to be familiar with the usual pace of it on the phone version of the game.
I've suspected the frame rate per second to be higher on the Xoom than the Nexus one...which could also be factored in, in refresh rate and then added to the whole performance. Which could spark problems like the ghosting we are seeing.(if you ever tried emulating a PXS on a PC you'll know what I mean)
I know that the screen response time could be a major factor but I couldn't get any information regarding the specifics of this screen. (btw you could be holding two Xooms with different screens)
So my guess for now, is the problem is with the refresh rate on the screen or the way the JIT compiler emulates...which could be solved with an update or a software tweak. Take what I said about the software side of this with a grin of salt
wow horrendous ghosting!!!!! (Using the ghosting test above)
Bumping this thread. Just noticed this on my xoom! Is it normal?
Another test : try going to http://tinyurl.com/xoghost and watch the drumsets at the bottom of the page and the guy in the second last row of second page ghost when you scroll the pages up and down.
Sorry... just saw the responses to the thread. For some reason my email notifications were off.
I ended up returning my Xoom to Amazon while still in the 30 day window so I can't do any further testing. One of the primary reasons for returning was due to the screen ghosting (and overall screen quality). I've also got my eye on the Asus transformer with the IPS display, but it keeps getting delayed. I might just wait until fall reign the next wave of tablets come out... maybe something with a tegra 3

It would seem so, It's absloutely terrible using the ghosting test linked. I'm getting a ghost the length of the actual cube trailing on my screen, in full screen. =/
ASUS Transformer doesnt suffer that much with the links you posted.
There are two different panels for xooms, one being AU optronics brand (typically sited as the cheap/crappy display) and the Sharp brand display which is supposed to be better.
I have the AU Optronics display and going to the ghosting URL linked previously I get terrible ghosting.
Can anyone with the sharp display test this and see what they see?
You can determine the display type by typing dmesg into a term emulator.
Sharp panels say: 'lcd_manfid=SHP'
AU panels say: 'lcd_manfid=AUO'
Now since dmesg is the kernal ring buffer you might need to reboot before you see it in your dmesg output.

I'm not surprised by the ghosting on these displays. Every mobile device I've owned has ghosted horribly. Even a lot of monitors around the office do it, but people don't seem to notice or care. I've always used 2ms displays at my home setup because of this. That being said, I paid about twice what other displays of similar size cost. People don't want to see the price of their precious electronics going up without seeing more nice specs on the list. A low response time display won't sell as well as a faster CPU or RAM... If you find a market that is looking at those 2 specs then make them great. Cheap out on the rest.
Actually this ghosting effect is due to the speed at which the pixels can change from one color to another. Some displays have issues with different color transitions.
This is something that doesn't happen on my nexus ones amoled display. And most of my monitors that I have also don't have this issue, at least to the degree of the xoom. It is disappointing to see how cheap the xoom display is.
I bet my droidx doesn't suffer from this either.

Has anyone else noticed?

Hi, has anyone noticed the screen flicker a little when watching videos? I don't notice it on every video but I have a video that is a little bright and the video takes place in the snow and ice. I can see the screen flicker slightly during the whole video. At first I thought it might be my micro sd card so I tried youtube and some videos do it there also. Only seems noticeable on bright videos.
Also, all of the videos I watch stutter a little. Doesn't matter if its videos I have stored on micro sd or youtube. Anyone else have this?
Really want to keep the tab because around me they are hard to come by so returning it will suck. But everytime I think I might just keep it I find something else wrong:crying:
So far dust between gorrila glass and digitizer, screen creeking in left corner, burning smell from speaker and screen flicker and stuttering videos.
Anyway, hope no one else is dealing with this
Also if no one minds could you go to this link on your tab and see if this video has screen flicker for you guys too? I watched on my pc and I see no flickering.

Goggle "didimm" it is a feature from nvidia. Many notice it, some don't.
I for myself rarely see it. And if it doesn't matter for me.
Maybe compare it to a device in store to see if yours is defective?
Hmm, that article says that your eyes would never be able to see the difference - well, guess what - almost everyone can see it! I assumed it was a "dynamic contrast" - just like some TV's do, but whatever it is, it *is* noticeable and it *is* very annoying at times. At least give us the option to disable it when needed (like when watching videos etc). The problem is that it seems to do it in stages, and like I said, there are *many* folks that find it very annoying.

Dynamic contrast is even worse with anime. You don't know the feels I know.
perhaps this can help:

just use the terminal emulator app (or adb shell) and do

Bam! no autodim until the next reboot

Great find! I too can confirm it works! Haven't noticed any degradation in screen quality/contrast either (although I guess it will effect battery life). Regardless, at least know we know we have the option to disable/enable as needed!
Thanks alot!
EDIT: What's strange (in my mind), is that if this feature is only for battery-saving, why wouldn't it be disabled while on AC power? That would be great if it would automatically disable this "feature" while on AC power, since the only goal is conserve power...

So it seems that even if I return it for a new one that this problem will be on that one as well?
So I wonder if some have it worse than others? Maybe I will still get a new one. I just fear that I will get a new one and it will have even more problems than the one I have now
EDIT: After going to link provided it seems things happen "after" watching a video. Where as my problem is during videos. And not all videos it seems. Plus am unsure about rooting because I may need to return it to bestbuy and i dont want the geeksquad trolling thru the device looking to see if i did anything to it like rooting

I would *not* return it for this! It happens on all TF700's (the original link is for the Nexus 7, which behaves differently, I believe).
Again, it's not a flaw - it's by design. This setting will allow you to disable/enable it though (I would hope that Asus also adds a toggle for this in future firmwares).
But returning it for another is not going to help and you may end up with a unit that has a real problem...
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
The flickering: I would not return it for that. I'm sure all the tf700s flicker just the same.
The stinky speaker: I would wait for it to fail first, then RMA it.
The dust trapped under the screen: Exchange it even if its just one spec. I exchanged my tf300 for the same reason, and my tf700 screen is flawless. The screen is the most expensive and prominant part, it should be flawless.
A couple months seems long. my exchange took around four days. I would reccomend taking it in for exchange and seeing what their estimate for the date would be. If its too long, you can always back out of exchanging it. You could also give RMAing it a shot, that will take weeks (which is better than months)
Rest assured the fix I linked to does work. I even used Script mananger, and the scripts provided on that page to make a desktop widget to turn it on and off. Dont worry about rooting. Flashing the firmware from asus's website will unroot it without a trace, then do a factory reset and you're good to go.:good:

Thanks rightonred! Yeah I know. I'm gonna give it some time. Was really just mad about the crusty stuff on the back of it. Thought I would come to my home away from (XDA) and share my sadness. after consideration might return my ipad for it

Ok, I took the time to sit down and write down my experience with both iOS and android so hopefully this will help.
When I had my ipod touch 4th generation.
I used it mostly for music and browsing
Loved to watch movies on it because of its retina display
Played games occasionally when I wasn't home and had nothing to do or had to wait for something.
That was pretty much all I did with iPod touch
Now my EVO 4G
I use it for mainly for music and browsing
I use it for movies
I did install some emulators had alot of fun with those for about 2 weeks... might be useful when i'm bored
had a custom rom CM7 on gingerbread, got very buggy over time, lots of crashes. However just flashed to an unofficial jellybean rom, i've been liking it but I tend to with most new roms due to the novelty factor.
As you can see, I don't really use that many apps. In some aspects I feel like some of the app store stuff is useless( what possibly could you need besides a browser, video player, a few games to keep you busy)
I however do need splashtop 2 so I can remote use my computer for CAD and PDF annotation. This has been on the ipad and was just released for android a couple of days ago. Because I need to be able to write with a stylus, is the asus tf700s digitizer accurate? I heard the prime had a terrible digitizer that made writing with a stylus impossible.
I would also like to have a good pdf annotator on the os itself for ebooks and such, and a good notetaking app.
I will say this now, if the asus had the same aspect ratio as the iPad and if the production consistency wasn't so finicky i probably would have gone for it in an instant, but because it's not, I still have a hard time deciding.
so this is the main decider: If the digitizer is accurate and I can be guaranteed a model with no flaws within one to two returns... then i will get it.

Ill give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not trolling. The digitizer on the infinity is extremely sensitive and accurate. I've compared to to a friends ipad 2 and the infinity's sensitivity and accuracy far outstrips the ipad. Also, for splashtop, the infinity is better as well because the 8:5 aspect ratio means you can maximize screen space if you have the most common 1920x1080 resolution while still being able to see the navbar. Movies also look better on the infinity because there aren't black bars and there is no upscaling from 1920 to 2048. As for quality control, I can't say because I've only got one infinity and its perfect.

The digitizer is pretty solid on the Infinity. When I had the Prime it was terrible I couldn't make a circle without it looking like cube! Its night and day with the infinity.

I would also like to have a good pdf annotator on the os itself for ebooks and such, and a good notetaking app.
so this is the main decider: If the digitizer is accurate and I can be guaranteed a model with no flaws within one to two returns... then i will get it.

There are plenty of apps for this as well. You would be much happier with this tablet. Its almost a laptop replacement imo

As for quality control, I can't say because I've only got one infinity and its perfect.

yup, I just needed to know that the digitizer is accurate on this thanks!
so 32gb is the smarter buy since i can always get an sd card?
And what problems should I check for as soon as i get it?
1.light bleed
2. green camera issue
3. bad battery?

Yes 32gb version is plenty since you can expand that pretty easily with external micro sd and if you go for the dock as well it will add another full size SD slot. Then you have your portable drives.
*On boot up check for light bleed. If you can live with what you see check that off. You won't see it during normal operations anyways.
*then go through the motions.
-Check cameras
-Check Haptic feedback
-Battery drain (amount of heat)
-Check to see if screen is separating.
-Check overall build quality
- It should want to update firmware once your on the home screen.

Sorry, Yes I have some light bleed but I don't notice at all during normal operations. It's only during boot up from a black background with Super IPS enabled is when you will be able to tell if any.
Once you drain the battery the tablet will shut down on its own. Plug it in and charge to 100% It's best to not use it during this time. If you have rooted already you can use Battery Calibration to reset your Battery data just to make sure everything is in sync. Obviously you will have to root your Infinity first to use Battery Calibration.
Have you returned your ipad yet?...or are you still busy researching all the reported bugs with the Asus non-ipad device?

Quality of images in Internet browser vs iPhone 6

Hi everyone. I was browsing autotrader.co.UK and noticed that the whites on the S6 aren't as pure as they are on the iPhone 6. I've read up about this and accepted that this is typical from Amoled displays but as I was observing I also noticed that (despite the S6 having a much higher resolution screen) the images on the webpage were not as high quality when comparing to the IP6 - they seem to be low resolution thumbnails. I tried Google Chrome and it didn't make a difference. Is this just a browser related issue? Any idea as to why this could be?
I've attached a couple of screen shots that will explain what I'm referring to (focus on the images of the cars).

Another example attached. This time I've post a side by side comparison with a HTC One M9. I thought it could be an android issue but clearly this is an S6 issue.
If you check the compared images on a desktop you'll notice a big difference in quality between the two images. For some reason the issue isn't as visible when viewing the images on this forum using my phone but there is definitely a noticeable difference when the S6 and iPhone 6/M9 are next to each other.
I'm surprised no one has anything to say.

So I've gone back to my iPhone 6 because of the above issue - it could be a serious one that at the moment doesn't appear to be a big deal to anyone - unless you know a solution that to the issue that you haven't shared?
I thought I'd leave the last message as hopefully someone will pick up on it and perhaps find a solution or at least raise it to Samsung's attention.
Enjoy your new phones all
That's very strange. Is it possible there is some sort of server side compression happening?
Have both. What you say is true.
did you try chrome ?
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Yes i want to know if you tried chrome as well... i do see what your talking about. But i always use chrome and do not get compression like that... but to me it sounds like you just don't like to try anything else and might be a apple fan boy? Enjoy your Apple locked expierence. You can. ... change your wall paper and that's it. Lol.
Honestly I tried almost every well known browser. That was my initial hunch as well. I tried Chrome, the Samsung default one, Firefox, Dolphin HD, Cheeter, and some others then gave up.
Definitely not a browser issue.
By the way I'd recommend downloading the attachments and viewing them properly as the previews don't show the issue.
Has to be some sort of compression issue - are Samsung doing this to improve the speed of their web browsing performance? Possibly.
Are you seeing this across the board on all websites or just Auto Trader? I'm a front-end developer and I know not all sites treat responsive design the same. It's possible that higher res (retina-ready) images are loading on iPhone and Android is left with the regular images.

I noticed this on all the websites I go on to - I thought it could be an android issue as well so I checked with the HTC M9 and the problem did not exist.

Do you have another quad hd phone you can compare to the htc? I wonder if it might be resolution related.

Bingo! Just tried it with an LG G3 and the same issues exist! Could be a scaling issue? I'd urge you guys to check it with a side by side comparison if you ever get the opportunity...

Wrong with phones that have a QHD screen including all Samsung Galaxy S6s.
Got the same issue...
This issue started appearing for me just yesterday! So frustrating!! I got the phone on launch day (April 10th) and it has been fine until now. For me the low res issue affects Chrome, Instagram, Snapchat, and some of my other apps. Also some HD photos that I had downloaded sometime last month or so (when this issue was non-existent) are now a bit low res and it is really annoying.... However the stock browser app and Dolphin browser are fine... Idk what's going on. Were you able to find some sort of a solution?? Thanks.

It's not an actual "issue". The image looks low res because it has to be stretched more to fit on the QHD screen on than on a FHD screen and your eyes are picking up the extra "stretching", which makes the image looks worse. Your problem though sounds different.
HD pictures shouldn't be looking low res. Can you describe your issues in more detail? How sure are you that there was no stretching before? Did you change any settings? What apps does it look stretched in and under what conditions?
Okay yeah that makes sense. So I was looking at an HD picture on Instagram that I have seen plenty of times but when I looked at that same pic a few days ago some parts did not look as sharp as before. Now for me I always pay attention to detail when it comes to a photo so I know that there's something wrong if it doesn't look the same. So I then noticed this issue again when I was reading an article online and noticed that the pic just was not HD. Here is the pic in question when I viewed it on Chrome: http://i.imgur.com/wCfpXYz.jpg
Here is the same pic on the stock browser: http://i.imgur.com/GW1toTq.jpg
Now if you specifically pay attention to Aaron's face you can see that the one on Chrome is less sharp when compared to the stock. So I assumed that the problem was with my Chrome browser for some reason. Then I tested another website for a pic and this is how it looked like on the stock AND Chrome: http://i.imgur.com/p61eKxA.jpg here it is again but on Dolphin browser this time: http://i.imgur.com/uyB4X02.jpg If you focus on the word Billboard it looks a lot less sharp on Chrome and the stock browser. So I know that the problem is not specific to Chrome. Also on Friday of last week, I watched the 360 degrees experience Avengers video on my YouTube app and it was really sharp, crystal clear HD and now when I watch it, it looks like this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_1yTF9ELpYgdjUteV9lWTgxTTA/view?usp=sharing The settings on my YouTube app is 1080p so idk why it should all of a sudden be looking like that... When I shot a video on snapchat it looked pretty clear until I watched it back and the screen was a bit fuzzy... the pixelation seemed off. It doesn't matter if I'm viewing any of the above apps in low light or bright light, they still seem low res.
Finally, I don't think I changed any settings either!

This is strange. I really don't know why Chrome/Stock Browser would do this while Dolphin shows it as more clear. Unfortunately, I'm out of ideas with this one. Hopefully someone else might have a clue as to what's going on.
Thanks for the effort though!
