I currently have a Desire S and looking to get a One S. But I'm concerned that the One S is too big to use comfortably in one hand. Is this the case?
Not too big. Screen size is just right and housing is thin
And ask questions in the question section

It's the width of the phone that was the issue for me. Might be best if I try it first.
Not too big.. Ergonomics of the device is excellent..
Maybe just the screen size 720p, respectively high ppi
I find it a bit hard to hold onto because theres no where to hold without pressing either the screen or the soft-buttons, or covering the camera.
But I guess its a matter of getting used to it, my blade had hard-buttons, and my tablets got 3 mile frames around the screen
One S is actually not too big. It is about the size of the ipod touch first gen but about an inch taller. I find it easy to use with one hand though it can be a bit slippery and the volume button is a bit too sensitive but that is an easy fix with a case.
Phone size just perfect.
I originally bought the LG Optimus 4X with a 4.7 inch screen but it didn't "feel right".
Now i got the HTC One S and the phone easily fits in my pocket even with a cover.
For me this is excellent size for use. I don't prefer bigger phones than one s. On the second side desire s is small phone.
The best size for phone for me is between 4 and 4.3.

The best one hand size is 4" but 4.3" is still in the usable range, any size beyond 4.3" is too big for single hand.

That statement depends on how big you are. I'm 6'7 and a gs3 fits perfectly as well as galaxy note. This device is a super easy grip with or without a case.
Pocket size is a different story of course. One s is good in the pocket

This phone is actually pretty small compared to all the high end phones coming out. Its a great size.. especially when you get a nice snug tpu case to protect it. :highfive:
I used Legend for 19 months before switching to One S.
Screen size is so important to me [the smaller the better], I might've gone for the One v had it not been for the insanely obsolete specs.
And now, honestly, I'm so used to One S, Legend seems so tiny to me now. Even the iPhone screen seems cluttered.
It's a matter of getting used to the size. and you will, once you switch to S.
I recommend.

I think you answered your own question
nexus s
I found coming from a Nexus S to the One S a little startling at first, but I wouldnt say the screen was too big. After using it for a few months I cant imagine going back to a smaller screen.
I came straight from an old candybar phone (no joke) and was a bit nervous about the surface area of the screen but after this I think I'd like HTC to make one the size of the SGNII because I'd really consider getting that one on launch.
I guess it depends on the size of your hand. For me it is a just a little bjt too big. Sometimes onehand operation is awkward. I love this phone and would not consider it a deal breaker though.

You need to try it out in store first.
I had the 4" Incredible S before, perfect size and fit.
The One S is on the large side for me, but ok 95% of the time.
My wife has the Desire S, it is a nice, small phone but a little clunky and tiny screen.
The One S blows away the Desire S in every aspect - big upgrade.
Lol I find this device to be a little small (for me) I got big hands

I suppose my opinion will be quite important to you My last phone was the desire s I owned it for over a year and I loved it, my one s felt a bit bigger (because it is) and then about 10 mins of using it I completely forget that I was using a bigger phone!
size is almost good for me .
only problem i had always is NOTIFICATION bar . my thumb is so flexible now !

Good day fellas,
I'm seeing a lot of video and comments on screen comparisons between Htc sensation 4G and Gs 2 and on.
My question is, I'm currently on SG 1 looking to upgrade to either sensation 4G or GS2, I'm concerned about the screen quality, I'm debating wether I should order the phone or not. I can get it at a very low price (employee pricing).
The phone has a higher res. Screen, I'm trying to convince myself that the difference in screen quality is not that big, but I would like you guys to tell me what you think from your experiences, is the GS2 worth the extra $, is the screen really that much better than the S4G, anything else from your point of view that should be considered???
Thanks in advance,
Rodi

No screen washout for me, as well.
Also something to add, in almost all the videos comparisons, when looking at the phones side by side the sensation looks practically white in comparison to the gs2. My only concern with the phone is the screen.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
I personally got a Sensation while my GF has a GS2, you can clearly see that both screens aren't the same: one is SLCD & the other is AMOLED.
The GS2 has saturated, neon-ish colors which at some times seem a bit too much, it is particularly notable in the android market: the green is VERY saturated. When put side by side it can make the Sensation seem very washed out.
I have also read on wikipedia that AMOLED displays have a shorter life compared to SLCD because of the organic components in it. The varied lifespan of the organic dyes can cause a discrepancy between red, green, and blue intensity. This leads to image persistence, also known as burn-in.
After a few weeks of use I've got used to my phone and am truly happy about my display, even though it isn't as saturated as the GS2 it still is a great LCD display with rich colors, clear whites & deep blacks and my movies look crystal sharp on it. Also the extra resolution is very much appreciated and is quite notable when I compare it to my GF's GS2, specially in the menus, mails & internet browser - the pixels aren't noticeable.
What I can tell you is that I was faced with the same choice as you: HTC Sensation or SGS2 and the display was also the most important thing for me since it's the way you interact with your phone. And i'm glad I chose the Sensation
Cool thanks for the info, I just ordered it from my work

Hey guys, new here and just wondering what you think about the size of the infuse. I'm considering getting one, but I am worried that I won't get used to carrying such a massive phone around. I am also thinking about the captivate because it is smaller, but definitely like the infuse more except wrt every other aspect of the phone. Thanks

To me, I barely even notice the size until I hold a different phone. It just feels perfect in my hands. Its not really that much of a hassle to carry around since its so darn thin. Its not at all bulky. Fits nicely in my jeans pocket.

The infuse feels better in your hand than you would think. This is due to its extremely thin profile. I owned a Dell Streak 5 and I hated it yet it is only a 1/2 inch bigger in the screen....reason being the thickness. Go for the infuse, best phone out there!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
It totally depends on you actually. I know a some people have trouble using it with one hand, where I have no problem swyping one handed and reaching all corners of the keyboard. You should go check it out in store, and see if you can operate it one handed. If you usually use two hands and don't swype, definitely get this phone! The screen is gorgeous and watching media such as netflix streaming on it is unbelievable. Basically like having a mini HDTV that I can carry around in my pocket.
Also, I had a captivate and was very happy with the screen size...until I got my infuse that is. Haha. My dad uses my captivate still, and every time I pick it up I can't believe how small it feels and just feel like I could never go back to anything smaller than 4.5". Like others have said, the thin form factor definitely makes this phone svelte and very useable.

i thought the same thing. Coming from my hd2 it wasn't a really big difference. what you will really notice is the thin profile. i found... kinda hard to grasp on to. but in the end, you will find out it is the a really good device.

I agree. It really isn't "THAT" big but the biggest problem for me is the thinness. It's so light and thin that for me it is difficult to hold on to but I have other issues such as arthritis in my hands which makes it worse. Putting it in a Bodyglove rubber case added enough surface to it to resolve that.
The screen size is absolutely perfect for me. I came from a g2x where I thought the screen was way to small. I was at the movies recently showing my girl how good Netflix looked and some random Guy asked me where I got my portable TV from.

I just made the switch from the i897 Captivate to the i997 Infuse on Monday night and I carry my device directly in my pocket and I have to say I really do not notice any difference between the two devices. Where I start to notice the difference is when it comes out of the pocket and into my hand. Definately a difference when it hits your hand and you start to use it. I had a little bit of a transition from using the Infuse with the cord plugged in (Captivate plugs in on the top, Infuse on the bottom) I thought I hated the cord on the top but not I actualy prefer it over the bottom plug scenario. When it was on top it was easier to hold in hand without the cord in the way. Now that it is there I am having to constantly adjust the way I am holding the device to accomodate this placement of the cord.
Other than that little "Inconvienience" The device is fantastic, brilliant in display...I am constantly getting the WOW factor when people see the screen and how vibrant it is. And battery life is right on par with all other devices (1/2day/12-13hrs of moderate to heavy use all day). So I would say go for it if you were on the fence or hold off a little longer and get the SGSII (pretty much the same phone but with dual core) which will be out in a month or so...or so they say.
It will be difficult to step down to a smaller screen size
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
As long as you don't death grip all the time or your hands are on the smaller end of the spectrum, the Infuse should be great.
Even with the screen being larger than other smart phones, the phone itself doesn't feel massive. Between the weight, thinness and just overall dimensions; this is a great phone. Compare to a Captivate or a Vibrant, there is no inconvenience that I've seen. If anything, you get a larger screen with better resolution and more capability. Development is building for the phone as well.
Overall, I don't think you will be disappointed with this phone. I have nothing but good things to say about it.
Way, way too big.
It is literally impossible to hold it with one hand and drag the notifications down.
With the same 480x800 resolution you don't get more screen real estate than a Captivate, just everything is bigger and pixelated.

Mikey is just angry because people started asking him if he was compensating for something. =P
Just messing with you. I personally haven't seen the pixelation issue, but maybe I'm just overlooking it.
I would definitely have to agree that it isn't a phone that's super easy to manipulate with one hand, but at the same time I haven't really had any issues. I think it just takes some adjustment coming from a smaller phone.
One thing I forgot to mention earlier, is that I'm much happier with the GPS on this phone than the previous generation Galaxy S models(i.e. Vibrant, Captivate and Fascinate). I know that isn't really size related, but it's definitely an improvement.
Ok Thanks everybody. I think I'm gonna go with the Infuse. 1 other quick question. Does it's thinness and size make it more fragile? I would put a case and screen protector on it, but is the screen breaking going to be an issue? Thanks

Lol, the One S has the same screen size and is roughly the same size over all as the Sensation, though the One S is thinner. It also has a faster CPU clock (compared to original Sensation), more RAM, more internal SYSTEM memory, triple the data speeds (based on theoretical top speeds), a larger battery (though as we all know it's not removable), and drastically improved camera sensor. Sounds like a worthy successor to me!

Well, the unibody has one big advantage: the phone feels rock solid, the case won't make "squeaks" in time like the one on the Sensation does. But I can't stand the fact that I can't replace my damn battery.
Regarding screen size: for me 4.3" is big enough. 4.7" phones tend to be unconfortable in skinny jeans and hard to use single handed (ex: when you're behind the wheel).

Only an advantage if it bothers you. I build **** all the time, perfection is not easily attained. When it comes to a device with multiple radios, portable power, a screen, user interaction, etc etc, all in a 11ish mm frame, I'm grateful that it creaks and squeakes.

I think we can put in another way.
For me is a nonsense to talk about display size, because it can be a 4.3" but with a big bezel. ONE S has a bigger bezel for example (just go and read the dimensions, you'll see more mm than sensation). So the important thing is the overall dimension.
I think that the perfect phone has a 720p rgb full display (4.3, or 4.5 with no bezel I don't care), with a removable long lasting battery and with dimensions smaller than 64*125.
Sealed it better. It means the battery can be bigger while the phone remains skinny. It's not like you can't use an external battery anyway.

Whit the bezel getting too thin, problems arise. You will, unintentionally touch the screen with the side of your palm and it will be more likely to break it.
For me, the sensation has the perfect size. This trend for bigger and bigger screens is just madness. If I want a big screen, I just grab my tablet and give that a go.
You're right, but first I think that they could develop some kind ok sensor technology able to distinguish when you're just holding it and when you mean to touch it, second if it's impossible to reduce the bezel, well okay just make the screen smaller to fit 64x125

in terms of smaller housing on phone you guys need to remember that it needs to pass drop tests. that is the reason verizon didn't get the original razer. when moto brought it to verizon they took it at waist height and dropped it on the floor and the demo broke. it was rejected until it could pass their drop tests which were the strictest in the industry next to nextel. since then they have drastically reduced their drop test criteria. strength of the bezel is part of that test. they can create a super thin fast badass phone but it it breaks on a 1 foot drop then it will meet with *****ing and complaining from everyone. the one s seems to be a nice combination of small and strong.
The xperia s has the same CPU as the sensation

I have been using the AT&T HTC One X for the last 3 days or so and would like to share my thoughts/review on this phone.
First of all a bit of a background - In the past I have used iPhone 3GS, Blackberry 9800, Palm Pre Plus, Atrix, Atrix2 and Samsung Galaxy S2 - all on AT&T network. SOme of these were used for just a few weeks before switching over to the next within the 30 days windows. The SGS2 has been my daily driver for the past 6 months or so and I have been fairly active installing custom ROMs and kernels from the xda forums.
I had decided to wait for the SGS3 but when I went to my local Sams club - they had a sample/fake model of the sprint SGS3 and my first thought after playing with it was - damn - this is just some cheapest piece of plastic ever used on a phone - it just looked terrible. Sitting next to it was the gray HOX and there was just no comparison build quality wise. Everything on the HOX oozes quality. So right then and there bought the HOX - still in my 30 days window so will play with a real SGS3 when it comes out and make the final decision.
Now - time for the review:
+ BUild quality - best of any android phone I have handled.
+ IPS screen is beautiful. COming from SGS2 the screen just looks awesome
+ loving Sense4. Touchwiz is just too black and dull. Like the brightness and the use of whites and light green on Sense
+ Battery life is really amazing (Xi40 ROM). My SGS2 barely lasts a full day with about 2-3 hrs screen on time. The HOX lasts a full day with some to spare even with 4 hrs screen time. This is unbelievable given the IPS screen (used auto brightness) and the 1.5GHz processor
+ Camera is pretty quick- better than SGS2
+ Higher resolution helps a lot - coming from SGS2
+ touch response/sensitivity is great compared to SGS2. Not sure about SGS3 but HOX is almost iphone like.
- Hate the recessed power button. Is a pain to find in the night/morning
- Size is a lil bit too big for my hands but getting used to it. The SGS2 size seems perfect for my hands. Power button placement worsens this
- Wish there was an sd card slot
- Stock Sense4 is pretty laggy - Switched to Xi40 ROM and its working flawlessly with absolutely zero lag - seriously!!!
- Bootloader unlock/rooting was a bit more tedious than Sammy phones but what the heck
- Multitasking really is bad. I am hoping some the devs here can fix that in the custom ROMs/kernels once the source is out.
In Summary - loving this phone - obviously with the custom ROM on it. Now if only I can find a good case which will not hide the beautiful exerior of the phone. Any suggestions? I want a case that adds covering on the buttons so they become easier to press but still not hide too much of the phone's exterior and not add too much bulk
Update1: forgot to mention....another positive about the IPs screen over amoled/pentile display....scrolling does not give you a headache....if you do not understand what I mean just try flick scrolling on sgs2

I believe he was talking about the smoothness and fluidity of the ui
^^^^yep....that's what I meant....e.g. the weight of scrolling and touch sensitivity. Typically on android if you flick scroll it will scroll real fast which is sometimes irritating....on the hoc if you flick scroll it is nicely dampened
Be careful what you wish for regarding a case that covers the power button. With the awkward placement of the button, adding more material over the top of it means you really have trouble mashing it down to get a response.
the case I'm using right now is the amzer shellster, and it is awesome. Even though it doesnt cover the buttons like you want, It maintains the beauty of the phone. It is also the only slim hard case that I know of that covers the camera so you can put down the phone without worrying about scratching the camera lens.

The display is great and one thing, which definitely deserves more praise rather than just being slated by a number of people and review sites. Sure the screen isn't as good in terms of sharpness and screen real estate compared to the GS 3, one X, GN and SE phones due to the 720P res. but the colours of it are superb and IMO better than the GN (too dull), GS 2 (too over saturated), SE phones (personally not really keen on their displays when it comes to the colours) and also the GS 3 screen, but the best thing about the one S screen is just how good it performs when in sunlight (as in sun shining right on the screen), I can see stuff (even on black backgrounds) without even having to squint my eyes (and that isn't even with 100% brightness, only like 70% brightness selected) where as with the GS 2 etc. I always have to cover it slightly with my hand in order to make a text or website etc. out. And with my S, there is no yellow/blue tints at all, no matter what brightness I put the mobile to, whites are extremely bright white (better than my dell U2311H), this will vary from unit to unit though.
IMO the desire HD has one of the worst displays ever, colours are extremely washed out, viewing angles are non existent, and it isn't that sharp either.
I do notice the pentile matrix, however, I only notice it when I have my face right up to the screen or am really concentrating on trying to spot the effects of it. The most noticeable areas I notice it are on the notification icons and white/grey text on black backgrounds.
From one of the best sites when it comes to hardware stuff and so knows what they are talking about:
I’ve griped about PenTile RGBG before on this panel and other SAMOLED displays, but I find the One S to be completely enjoyable in spite of having it thanks to two things. First, how well HTC has controlled the panel (no awful hues, weird white points, or dramatic shifts as you change brightness) - this is basically the best I’ve seen this particular panel, and until SGS3, the best I’ve seen AMOLED in general. Second, because HTC doesn’t appear to be applying any processing that applies sharpening (like Samsung’s mDNIe) to text.
How you feel about PenTile really is the final factor: it’s there, but I’ve slowly become accustomed to it after staring at it for so long. If you go back to the Nexus S days, I was one of the most outspoken critics because of how large those subpixels were. With small enough subpixels (below visual acuity), PenTile starts to make sense. In other news, HTC moving back to Samsung AMOLED for phones is an interesting move after supply issues forced HTC to SLCD with some earlier phones, here on the HTC One S however, it looks great.

Although as always, you should check out for yourself first to see what you think.
Imo, I would get the OneS if I were you.
I also came from the DHD, an moved forward after the no update fiasco.
I am on pre-pay and did not want to sign a contract again, actually ever but that's another issue, so I shopped around for the OneS on sell in different places. I could not swing full retail so I looked for NIB phones that are turned over fast.
Well long story short is, I looked and looked for a slightly used phone and never scored one sadly, I would up grabbing a OneX NIB for under 400 and couldn't say no to that price.
However I still like an want a OneS, nice form factor coming from the DHD and really is a sharp looking phone.
Would I suggest one to my friends, in a heartbeat.
Get yourself a OneS an rock on.

I got it recently, chose it over OneX and S3 because of its size, and couldn't be happier with it. You won't be sorry if you get One S. Search similar threads for more info.

Same here. One X is so awesome big Take One S S4 - great phone. But remember using a case when you order the black version, cause after some time the color in the edges turns silver...
