What "rich colors"? Colors are fairly average on MT4G display.

A lot of reviews I have viewed on the MT4G say that even though it has a normal LCD (or SLCD -- depending on who you ask), the colors are fairly "rich". This may just be the affect SAMOLED has had on me (I am coming from a Vibrant) but I hardly find the colors on the MT4G to be "rich" -- especially the whites.
I have attached a screenshot of Google.com from my MT4G; Looking at Google.com on the MT4G, the white is more off-white than it is real white.
Anyone else seeing this? I am not expecting SAMOLED quality (obviously) and the colors are not "poor", but they are nothing special either.
EDIT: I just realized attaching a screenshot proves nothing since the problem is with how the LCD on MT4G shows it rather than the page itself. In other words, the screenshot will look just fine if viewed from a different device. So I have removed the screenshot.

I'd have to agree that it's the SAMOLED affecting your judgment.
No screen, other than another SAMOLED or the fictitious SAMOLED2, can really compete.
The SLCD(or regular LCD, depending on your source, like you said) screen in the MT4G is essentially the standard in smart phones these days. What sets the MT4G apart is the internals, which are far superior to anything on the market, imo. Second-generation 1GHZ Snapdragon processor and 768 RAM is what I'm referring to.
Personally, I found the screen on my second MT4G to be on par with the G2, which I also place above my Nexus One's AMOLED. So basically, again in my opinion, SAMOLED > G2/SLCD = MT4G/SLCD? > Nexus One/AMOLED > Everything else

Second generation processor and 768 MB of RAM is nice, although the GPU is a bit inferior to that of the Vibrant (just had to throw that out there).
That said, could it just be my particular phone? I compared Google.com on my MT4G and my laptop too and there is definitely a difference in the whites.

Fully admit the Vibrant has a better GPU. There's tons of benchmarks to show it.
My first MT4G had a really seemed to have a washed out screen and I replaced it because of this fact, more or less.
When you had your screenshot attached, I pulled up Google.com and held it to the screen for comparison. But, like you noted when you removed it, it's being compressed through the interwebz then re-displayed on my desktop's screen so of course I saw a difference. That being said, I do think the screen on the MT4G is good. Is it better than other things currently on the market? Eh. Maybe. I think it's pretty standard, to be quite honest. It's the other internals, the build quality of the entire device itself, and the fact that I actually like SenseUI/mySense that won me over to keep the device.

The funny thing is I hate mySense/Sense -- I loved TouchWiz, haha. It really is TouchWiz/SAMOLED that really is holding me back from returning my Vibrant just yet... I am having hell of a time making up my mind.
For me it all comes down to TouchWiz + SAMOLED vs HSPA+ + FFC.

I whole-heartedly agree with you that the screen is nothing special. While I love my mytouch 4g, I admit that the screen is just average. There's been a lot of debate as whether the screen is slcd or not. I have to say it is a regular lcd after comparing it to the g2; while the mytouch 4g is brighter, the g2 is noticeably more saturated.

If I have the choice between a fantastic SAMOLED screen on a crappy samsung phone like the vibrant and a great device with a nice bright LCD like on the MT4G. I go for the MT4G. I absolutely don't care about SAMOLED. The screen is not a self purpose and people who are buying a phone solely because of a screen are crazy. I had the N1 and the AMOLED screen was too dark and never looked really sharp. I don't watch avatar on a phone (rediculous) and I don't play games (I am over 30;-) so if I have a bright and sharp screen I am satisfied.

To me it was the opposit. Holding the Nexus One next to the MT4G I thought the nexus had better color...the 4G looked washed out. I like watching videos when traveling and my first instinct was to send the 4G back and stay with the Nexus...especially since I had the Desire Sense on it. But, the MT4G has larger internal memory, 4G, etc... I kept the 4G and my son gets the Nexus.

I may be in the minority, but I hated the SAMOLED on the Vibrant. The white balance on that device was just awful. Whites were light blue/green. Having much warmer whites that are much closer to the standard is much nicer on the mt4g. Additionally, text was so fuzzy compared to the sharp, much more readable text on the mt4g. Lastly, the colors, while certainly vivid and rich are so far from realistic, it just looked silly. No way would a good calibration specialist worth his weight in salt would arrive at those curves. It's sort of like looking at a TV on the floor of a big box retailer like Best Buy. Apparently, those settings move their TVs, and based on feedback here, people love that HDR-like cartoonish appearance. Their saturation and contrast levels are maxed out, and simply don't provide a realistic picture. The only real advantage of the Vibrant was its ability to show inky dark blacks. That was fantastic.

Agreed. I've been trying to figure out what I hated so much about the Vibrant screen, and you just nailed it for me. Personally, I think my MT4G screen is excellent. There is a point where it's simply "more than good enough", and who cares after that?
I can honestly say that, after having this phone for a few days, it is the first phone I've purchased that is worthy of replacing my Nexus One (and I've bought pretty much every Android device out there that can run on T-Mobile's network). To me, *that* means something big. I bought the Nexus on Jan. 5, and it has taken over eleven months for somebody to finally put something better out.

I loved the SAMOLED screen on my Vibrant (now sold). However, that was the only thing I loved about that phone. I have to admit, when I got the MT4G and compared both phones side by side, I was slightly disappointed in what appeared to be lacking color saturation on the MT4G's display. However, after using the phone for a couple of days, not only did I begin to like the display and its extremely sharp resolution and text appearance, I forgot all about the SAMOLED.
This was probably aided by the fact that the MT4G is a phenomenally powerful device - in terms of performance, the Vibrant is not even in the same league.

I don't have a MT4G but I did play with one extensively in the store. At the time I had a Nexus 1 and Vibrant so I was a bit sad that the screen did look washed out compared to it, but when used by itself it was perfectly fine. And I do agree the colors look too oversaturated on the amoled screens as well, but the blacks are just so nice.
The thing that I do like about SLCD displays vs. amoled is the pixel layout allows for much sharper text, something I never got used to on amoled, I just dealed with it. For browsing and reading emails the MT4G screen or any SLCD for that matter is far superior than amoled. The iPhone 4's display... wow, nice sharp text. =(

So, I think there's one of two things going on with these phones. I just got my first mt4g on sunday. it came loaded with 2.2.1 and it came with a great quality screen. I had my buddy root it, and i got a little overzealous deleting bloatware and deleted "friendstream" which in turn caused the phone to never complete "syncing" and therefore i always had the syncing logo in the task bar. I took it back to the store and got a replacement....well this one came loaded with 2.2 and had a really washed out screen. I at first thought maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me....but it was so washed out, i couldn't take it any more....so I took it to another store (a busier store that would likely not be sitting on earlier builds). This one too came with 2.2.1 but also had a washed out screen...
So T-Mobile/HTC is clearly using differen't suppliers for these screens
As it is a completely noticable difference, not only in color/contrast ration, but viewing angles as well.
I will say this, I've owned a Nexus one, a Vibrant and a g2 for a few days. ,(If/When you get a "Good" Screen) I think of all the screens this one may have the best comprimise of sharpness/contrast/color. While the Nexus and Vibrant at first glance look amazing...the text is grainy (screen door effect) and the colors are unrealistic...so when viewing some picture or video it looks like cartoonish. That said, if you get a Washed out screen....it's probably the worst of all three.
I will be going back to the store in a few days to try and exchange and get a good one again.
That's my 2 pennies.
PS, I'd also like to add...that yes...I set all of them to "auto brightness" so that was not a factor.

Follow up to my previous post. There is NOTHING in 2.2.1 that improves the screen quality. There is an obvious case of more than one manufacturer making the LCD's in these phones. Because after replacement this one came with 2.2 and has a better screen. Also, We opened 5 phones at the store and all of them had washed out colors until i finally said "let's try a plum one instead of black" and that one had a good screen with higher contrast ratio. So now I'm on a Plum MT4G...and while it's not my first choice....it's pretty cool and leaps and bounds above white or red. And the Picture Quality; Better blacks, richer colors and better viewing angles than the previous two I had.
I'd encourage anyone dissatisfied to return to the T-Mobile store you purchased and ask them to open up several, before processing the exchange so that you can get a good one. The easiest way to tell, is turn the phone slightly off angle....if it gets washed out, it's the bad one. If the colors stay rich then it's a good one. The Nexus live wall paper is also very telling on a good one as the colors pop more and the grey scale is far more defined... I will try and take a photo of mine next to a washed out one so You guys can see the difference as well, soon!

Quick question.. did you have a chance to compare the "newer" screen with the screen of a G2? I had the G2 for a few weeks and when the MT4G came out, I compared both phones at a tmobile store. The difference in the contrast and color was obvious. I wonder how the newer batch of MT4G screens compare now to the G2.

I used the G2 for about 4 days before going to the MT4G. But, I went back to the NEXUS ONE in between the two for about a week and a half so it wasn't an immediate comparison. But from what I can remember this "Good" MT4G is BETTER than the G2 in screen quality. But, the MT4G's with the poor screens couldn't stand up to the G2 at all, and certainly not to the N1.
But, I like the overall screen quality of the good MT4G's over all the phones I've had. Including the N1 & Vibrant.

I noticed the same thing regarding different displays on the MT4G. My first MT4G had a display that washed out quickly at angles. My 2nd MT4G's display does not wash out as much and generally looks better.

Yes, I noticed before when my phone was on my desk and i got a text, i could read it while it was sitting there....then when i got the replacement phone i would have to pick the phone and face it toward me....now again with this "good screen" I can see the texts while it's sitting on the table.
I'm telling you folks, it's a night and day difference in Picture quality.
I think T-Mobile needed a ton of these for the holiday demand and HTC outsourced the screens from different manufacturers....and left some looking "Awesome!" and some looking " Meh? =/ "
My buddy tried to take pics at the store of his vs. one with the washed out screen, but it was difficult to tell with a phone camera, need a real digital camera to show it.

Maybe from here on in, for those of you claim there is a difference, please let us know where the "good" ones and "bad" ones were manufactured. Could be a pattern there. I believe this information can be found by the battery on the inside.

Mine does look good even contrast isn't "unlimited" because the screen is not AMOLED.

Does the Thunderbolt NOT have an SLCD display

I was going to get the thunderbolt, but then I came across the slashgear review that said it has a regular tft display. So then I checked HTC's website and it says TFT.
Hmm...

Whatever it is, it looks pretty nice.

Yeah, that pic looks awful. Good thing mine doesn't look anything like that. Might want to look at one in person before you judge it.

Coming from the Fascinate, the screen is the worst part of the Thunderbolt. We'll see if I used to it after a week or two.

I also used to have a fascinate.
Screen is a huge factor in buying a phone since, you know, that's the thing we look at on the phone lol.

Are you guys seriously getting mad??? I'm trying to figure out information about the screen because I wanted this phone, but the screen is a HUGE factor in my decision. I can't check it out in person until after work. Anyone have any pics of the screen at a direct angle?

The screen is TFT and it is not a very good one in my opinion. I don't care much about the viewing angles - for me the colors are pretty poor and it is not very sharp. The lack of sharpness is mostly due to blowing up the resolution on a larger screen but the colors on this thing are pretty bad when compared to my amoled Incredible and iPhone 4. Not crisp, not very good. The screen is very nice for video (due to the size) but otherwise completely unremarkable when compared with devices a year older.
Combined with the battery life and some serious Sense bugs, probably sending this one back. My coworker already sent his back today.
I guess I am disappointed with all the buildup of this "flagship" phone. Seems they could have presented a tighter package. I really wanted to like this phone - oh well.

Its been reported that the screen is SLCD its better than my EVOs screen. I personally dont like amoled screens, there too saterated imo. HTC is moving from amoled screens to SLCD LIKE the bolt.

I went from an iPhone 4 to Fascinate and now Thunderbolt out of those 3 the iphone had the best display and the fascinate had by far the worst i hated the screen the colors just looked fake and made everything look cartoony. I absolutely LOVE the screen on the thunderbolt SLCD ftw!

I've got a Dinc and aDX (both rooted FWIW), and a Xoom. Picked up a Thunderbolt over the past weekend. Love the screen. Much better than the DX, and I personally don't care for the saturation of the Dinc AMOLED. T-bolt screen is on par with the Xoom which is gorgeous.

The screen owns the crap out of my Droid, which was confirmed to possess a normal TFT screen.
The T-Bolt definitely has a Super TFT LCD. I'm not sure a Super AMOLED would be necessarily better at this point, except for battery savings on 4G.

honestly this phone looks much better than my eris, and my incredible. and most definitely better than my g-tablet lol.
there is no angle where the screen loses color and it is extremely crisp looks much better than the dx when held right next to it. It just seems sharper. same res though.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Bolt screen. It's bright, vibrant and colors are very nice. I came from a Nexus One AMOLED screen.
Screen on TBolt rocks, at least on mine it does.

how are you gonna judge a phones display without seeing one in person? nerd much?
this screen looks great to me...but I couldn't care less whether you get the phone or not..

I agree. The screen is the biggest disappointment to me. It's not bad, it's just not up to par, in my taste, with either the iPhone 4 or the Nexus S and Galaxy S SAMOLED screens. It's the least satisfying thing about the phone for me, but not sure it's a deal breaker. I'd prefer a SAMOLED Thunderbolt, though!

The screen should be a huge factor in your decision, but no picture on the internet is going to give you an idea of how it looks in person...
re: Nexus One comments, it's a first generation AMOLED (no S) device with a pretty lousy implementation of it on top of everything else. Totally unusable in sunlight, totally oversaturated, totally wonky. Not sure about DINCs or anything else.
I've have every model of iPhone, including the iPhone 4, a Nexus S, Nexus 1, Galaxy S i9000, Galaxy S Vibrant, Thunderbolt, and used to have an EVO 4G. The iPhone 4's display is pretty amazing, but I think I still prefer the SAMOLEDs.
SAMOLEDs are a tough act to beat in my opinion, but only because I like INKY blacks...total lack of color/light blacks, which only the SAMOLED/AMOLED displays can deliver. Compare a Thunderbolt to a Nexus S in a darkened room with a black screen on the phone and the Nexus S will emit no light...the Thunderbolt will emit a glowing black-ish backlit light. Not important to all, but something I really notice. As said above, not a deal breaker to me, but I'll jump ship to the first decent LTE phone to come along with a SAMOLED screen.

I do not have any problem with my display. Yeah, AMOLED and SAMOLED displays will have better contrast and more vibrant colors... but I do not have any issue with my TB display.

Question about the screen S4G

Good day fellas,
I'm seeing a lot of video and comments on screen comparisons between Htc sensation 4G and Gs 2 and on.
My question is, I'm currently on SG 1 looking to upgrade to either sensation 4G or GS2, I'm concerned about the screen quality, I'm debating wether I should order the phone or not. I can get it at a very low price (employee pricing).
The phone has a higher res. Screen, I'm trying to convince myself that the difference in screen quality is not that big, but I would like you guys to tell me what you think from your experiences, is the GS2 worth the extra $, is the screen really that much better than the S4G, anything else from your point of view that should be considered???

I bought a sensation, and quite frankly, it is the best phone I have ever had. It is pretty well built, and feels awesome to hold.

No screen washout for me, as well.

Also something to add, in almost all the videos comparisons, when looking at the phones side by side the sensation looks practically white in comparison to the gs2. My only concern with the phone is the screen.

I personally got a Sensation while my GF has a GS2, you can clearly see that both screens aren't the same: one is SLCD & the other is AMOLED.
The GS2 has saturated, neon-ish colors which at some times seem a bit too much, it is particularly notable in the android market: the green is VERY saturated. When put side by side it can make the Sensation seem very washed out.
I have also read on wikipedia that AMOLED displays have a shorter life compared to SLCD because of the organic components in it. The varied lifespan of the organic dyes can cause a discrepancy between red, green, and blue intensity. This leads to image persistence, also known as burn-in.
After a few weeks of use I've got used to my phone and am truly happy about my display, even though it isn't as saturated as the GS2 it still is a great LCD display with rich colors, clear whites & deep blacks and my movies look crystal sharp on it. Also the extra resolution is very much appreciated and is quite notable when I compare it to my GF's GS2, specially in the menus, mails & internet browser - the pixels aren't noticeable.
What I can tell you is that I was faced with the same choice as you: HTC Sensation or SGS2 and the display was also the most important thing for me since it's the way you interact with your phone. And i'm glad I chose the Sensation

I've recently picked up a Sensation, and I can't help but notice how "odd" the screen looks in comparison to my Incredible S. I've read in reviews that it is a bit disappointing in terms of viewing angles and such, and that's true. It also looks as if there are faint scan lines running across it (like a monitor that has an incorrect refresh rate) and the gamma is less intense.
Is this just how the Sensation's screen is or does mine have some issue? I may simply be really used to the Incredible S display.
I'm loving the phone otherwise.

My screen suffers from yellowing at more than 30° or so, but no scan lines like you mentioned. I know there was a lot of discussion about the screen when they first came out and 2 or 3 different screens were used for the displays. I have a sharp screen on mine for reference.

I also have a " sharp" screen on mine. No lines at all. If it bothers much perhaps exchange it for one without lines. (i don't think they are supposed to be their anyway) as for contrast my daughter just got a s3 and our screen compared to the s3 screen is very poor in my opinion. Our colors seem washed out and light compared to her vivid bright screen . But I'm not really complaining I don't seem to notice unless I do a side by side comparison. If I were you I would take back the device for one without lines! Problem could worsen in the future and I know not every sensation has them. Mine doesn't . Best wishes to you .

I haven't used the Incredible S before, but a quick search reveals it has a 800x400 16M color S-LCD screen, the same tech in the Sensation's screen (except the higher resolution).
You're saying gamma is more intense than Incredible S, if this is the case then the Sensation may be calibrated with more vividly than the Incredible S. Does your Sensation screen have colours similar to AMOLED screens? How does the white balance look? I find my Sensation screen to be much more neutral than the typically over saturated AMOLED screens (which is how S-LCD should look like, factory default). White balance looks great too on my Sensation, pretty close to 6500K.
I've never seen scan lines on my Sensation, this is most likely the biggest clue you've given that your screen may have defects. Would be much more easier for everyone if you can post a picture of your actual Sensation screen on.

I've got an AUO screen myself. Is it possible my eyes are adjusting to it? I'll give a week and see how it goes.
It's a shame about the washed out colours, but it could be worse.

I haven't used the Incredible S before, but a quick search reveals it has a 800x400 16M color S-LCD screen, the same tech in the Sensation's screen (except the higher resolution).
You're saying gamma is more intense than Incredible S, if this is the case then the Sensation may be calibrated with more vividly than the Incredible S. Does your Sensation screen have colours similar to AMOLED screens? How does the white balance look? I find my Sensation screen to be much more neutral than the typically over saturated AMOLED screens (which is how S-LCD should look like, factory default). White balance looks great too on my Sensation, pretty close to 6500K.
I've never seen scan lines on my Sensation, this is most likely the biggest clue you've given that your screen may have defects. Would be much more easier for everyone if you can post a picture of your actual Sensation screen on.

My mistake, I meant to say the gamma was less intense. It seems very washed out and less saturated than my Incredible S. The blacks and whites are better though.

My only problem with the screen is that the blacks aren't black enough. Well.. I suppose that's true to all colors.. as you guys said..they're a little bit washed out.
Beside that..no scan lines and the viewing angles never disappointed me.

The scan lines-not normal.
Being washed out, highly reflective, blacks that aren't black enough, maximum brightness that isn't very good for outdoor use, and the like-normal.

I had another Sensation with an AUO screen and found it sort of unpleasant to look at. I think it was something to do with the way the pixels were arranged, made the text look fuzzy. I also remember the screen having more of a pink/purple hue compared side by side with the Sharp screen, but I don't remember seeing any sort of scan lines.
If you just bought it from a retail outlet, I would see if you could get an exchange. If not, I guess its up to whether you want to deal with exchanging it with HTC (it should still be under their 2 year warranty), or deal with the screen as is.

Is the warranty two years? The little slip inside the box says 12 months, which would mean this phone is out of warranty by now. (I got it from someone who upgraded their phone)

I've taken a picture of the scanlines here.
Ignoring the vertical lines that both phones have at this zoom, you can see the Sensation has faint horizontal lines running across it while the Incredible S doesn't. Not sure if that's just how the display quality is on the Sensation.
Make sure you zoom into the full size image to see.

Last time I spoke with HTC customer service was to get a replacement mainboard for my wife's HTC Vision/G2. When I was on the phone I inquired about my HTC Sensation warranty, as I was surprised that the G2 was even under warranty still (G2 had a 15 month warranty I believe). If I recall correctly the warranty period they told me was for two years. I was thrilled to hear it, as I was under the assumption pretty much all phone warranties were for 1 year. Give HTC a call and see what their terms are, you may be pleasantly surprised.
Also, I have some pics that I took a while back that have the Sharp screen side by side with the AUO screen, but I haven't yet located them. When/If I do, I will post them for your reference.
Edit: I am using the T-Mobile HTC Sensation 4G, not sure if this has an influence on the warranty terms, but it could (different SKU compared to European version).

From S4 AMOLED to Nexus 5 LCD ..any second thoughts?

Any other S4 owners having reservations about going back to LCD screen after enjoying AMOLED?
I know S4 colors are not perfectly accurate but I for one have always enjoyed such vibrant display on my phone. I'm all for having accurately calibrated TV but on a phone I prefer the richness AMOLED provides. When I tried switching the screen profile to "Movie", to see how it would be, I always got a "blah" feeling when I went back to my home screen, something was missing.
So, my Nexus is "out for delivery" and I'm trying to convince myself to open the box when it gets here. I like everything else about it.

I've been with the S3 since it was released and always liked the super vibrant and colour saturated screen. Been on my Nexus 5 for a few days now and I actually prefer it more. The colours aren't as saturated but the screen looks more.. realistic. I find the S3 screen to be too distracting and irritating now.

I don't know about the "vibrancy" of my Nexus 5's screen, but it is worlds ahead of my Galaxy Nexus' screen. Everything is crystal clear, and looking at them both at the same time makes my Gnex look awful.

I was in a similar boat coming from my galaxy note 2. I've always adored AMOLED displays.
To my surprise though I really like the nexus 5 screen. I like it better than my note 2. I'm really impressed.

I have never been a big fan of AMOLED. I have had it on past phones, like you I had a Galaxy S3 as my immediate prior phone. I honestly hated the display because I couldn't see anything in direct sunlight outside. It was great for indoor viewing at night, and as a clock on my night stand but that was it. I much much more prefer the screen on the Nexus 5.

AMOLED is terrible. IPS is much better

I'm still having some reservations.
I'm testing both devices for a week.

I am coming from a Note 2 as well. My first reaction to the N5 was, wow this screen looks great. Crystal clear and colors look better to me. This is another thing though that will be entirely up to the user. Some with see things different than others.

It's a cheap IPS, which is no better than S-PVA.
Just compare Nexus 5 colors to iphone or to IPS monitors from Apple or NEC.

S4 GE's bootloader is unlocked. what's the problem ?

No second thoughts at all. Love ips screens. S4 screen you can see it is something glued under something else while here you feel it is one. Also amoled screen hurts my eyes. As for the washed out colors no worries at all. PA has the cure

I'm really missing AMOLED if i'm being honest. There is no Black as such on the N5 screen, just shades of grey. IPS glow sucks! What i want on this phone is to eliminate all traces of the Holo dark theme which doesn't work at all well on this screen. If everything was light coloured it wouldn't be an issue.

I've never actually owned a phone with an AMOLED screen but I have used them a bit and I personally prefer IPS, the HTC One has the nicest displays yet I hope the N5 screen is at least comparable.

This was my experience too coming from a Note 2. I love the display.

I've never owned a phone with amoled display, but looked at Samsung note 3, my initial thoughts were that the colours were very vibrant, after some time however I have concluded that the colours are over saturated.
I realise it's a matter of personal choice which you prefer, my preference is IPS lcd .
With regards to the claimed superiority of amoled display ability to show truer black, I am typing this on my nexus 5 and the black display is almost indistinguishable from black bevel at the top of the screen.
