Most horrifying experience with my HTC One XL - Need some advice from here on out - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So about an hour ago, I tried turning on my HOX from sleep, and to my horror I SAW NOTHING ON THE SCREEN.
After a while, I found out that the touchscreen was still responsive, and the bottom buttons were still lit. I tried to hard reset t by holding down the power button, but when my phone would restart, I would feel the vibration, but the boot screen/splash screen/EVERYTHING was pitch black - nothing showed up on my screen.
So I played around with it, knowing that my phone was on, but I couldn't see anything. I figured out after a while that if I pressed REALLY hard on the edges of my phone, my phone would flicker on - which proved to me that it was some sort of backlight issue.
All of a sudden, about 5 minutes ago, my backlight returned and everything is back to normal.
But now, I'm deathly afraid that it might happen again. What should I do? Should I go and get a replacement? Was this a freak occurrence? I'm on edge here :\

Why are you asking?! Go get that sucker replaced!

I'm hesitant because my current phone is rooted-ROMed-customized like crazy, and I was hoping someone would say something like "Yeah that's a one-time freak accident kind of thing", which would make it so I don't have to redo everything, haha.
Well in any case, since I'm here now already (and I know I can search the development forum) - what's the state on rooting/unlocking the bootloader for the newest HOX firmwares? Are there any issues with rooting/unlocking? Or is it a pain-free process like it was back in June-Julyish when I got mine?

lol I would def return it. I had similar issue . Here is a link for any rooting needs as well as how to relock and unroot your phone.

They will most likely honor the warranty because it could have just as easily happened to a non rooted phone.

Replace it.

Any advice - Desire S stuck on black screen after boot...

This is going to be a bit hard for me to explain as it's actually happened to my girlfriend's phone and she explained over the phone.
Basically the phone completely locked up, wouldn't do anything so she had to pull the battery. After reinserting it it booted up the HTC screen but then just goes to a black screen (possibly dark blue) and it just stays on there.
From googling a bit it sounds like the software's screwed up and the device is now bricked, I told her to contact HTC and she has - the phone is completely unmodded so are HTC likely to swap it?
Thanks
yep they will swap it but before she is exchanging it, why don't simply flash a ruu? will be way faster (30min) against waiting for them to replace (some days)
Man, mine was almost same issue, stucked on the HTC logo (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124855).
I decided to return it though and let them fix it. Problem though is that it would take them weeks or even worse month to return back to me.

Desire S death after market AGAIN..

my phone is not rooted at all, i've just been using launcher pro.
Thing is, few months ago, the emmc chip thing has already happened to me.
While updating in the market, it hanged, i pulled the battery, and it died.
I sent it to HTC to repair and got it back. Phone has been smooth since then.
But few days ago I clicked update all, and it hanged again. Was stuck at the htc white screen for a while, but after constant on and off, i was sooo jubilant when the launcher pro loaded. So no problem after that.
but just now, i was just downloading one or two apps in the market, and it hanged again. I tried to turn it off and on, and so far it hasnt responded well..
it stops at HTC- quietly brilliant, the music rings, and nothing else happens.
(I am guessing this is a good sign? when my emmc chip fried, the music never played)
can anyone help me now though? i don't know what to do except hold both volume buttons and shutting down and restarting again.
i might have to pull out the battery at some point and restart.
i love the phone, but this really sucks big time.
Without intentionally meaning to offer any sympathy, am I right in thinking that after a battery pull killed your first device you then went on and pulled the thing again?
have you looked at this

i know pulling the battery kills it, but i couldnt really do anything else..
well now i'm screwed again.
the thing is pretty much dead, and only gives me the white htc screen.
seriously, htc? if i were rich or had another phone replacement i'd throw this phone out the window at this moment.
now i'm not even in the country where i bought my phone and have my warranty ughh.. is htc's warranty global, or am i screwed?

Not much help now, but should you give HTC one more chance, and it locks up again, you can force a reset without battery pull by holding down both volume keys and the power button.

Wait... you said in your first post that you got past the white screen with green "htc" on it (the splash image) and onto the bootanimation (where it says "quietly brilliant" and plays the music... is that correct?
If it is, its a good sign. It means your phone is getting to the ROM and attempting a bootup. I hope you havent pulled your battery meanwhile!!! This thing may still be salvageable.
Do let us know if you can still get to the bootanimation...
the first few times it did run to the part where "quietly brilliant" came up with the music, but after that it never loaded, so i kept soft resetting many times but it would never load. Then it stopped loading pass the white HTC screen. When i soft reset, the phone blackouts for a few secs and that white screen pops up again. So there wasn't even a chance to do (volume down + power) to do a factory reset. I had to pull the battery.
Today I took it to the service center, since this is not the country where I bought my phone, it wasn't under warranty, and I will have to pay around $30 USD. it will be back by next tuesday though.
but seriously, how is this the fault of the consumer? I have not rooted or s-off my phone. It hanged while doing an ordinary phone function - downloading from the market. How is an average consumer supposed to know that he shouldn't be pulling out the battery? and he should need to know how to do all the technical recovery things himself?
f htc.. this is the last htc product i will be using in a few years.
second time it happened to this phone too, and like i said, it happened last week too, though i was able to reboot it after maybe 30 minutes.
the only one good thing is at least they gave me a temporary phone (wildfire) to use while my desire s is being fixed.
Same problem here with me, while trying to open htc likes, it hang and no response from power bottom, i waited for 2 min, still no response, so i pull out the battery, and re install and try to open my htc desire s, its doesnt power up, no response, it does not open even the white screen of htc, no vibration, its like an dead now, try to go to recovery mode, my clicking vol down+ power key. still there is no responce, i dont know what to do, as there is no htc sercive center in my country. guys please help me if there is any other way to make it alive, i ma really worried that its hardware problem or software problem, as i havent drop it or it has in contact with water, just it hang up and i pull the battery and reinstall. please guys help me

[resolved]I think my digitizer is broke. maybe its the rom

I dont know it it is a software issue to what. Last night I put my phone in my pocket. I pulled it out and the screen was a frozen white noise image. I dont know it my phone is locked up cause I used the revolution rom or the screen went bad. Any ideas?
I will try to add a phone. I currently am using my old pantech c300 due to lack of back up phones.

Before I offer any advice, what have you done so far to try and remedy this (i.e. battery pull, reformat phone, bang it on a desk...)? I just need to know what you've done before I try and offer you the same solution...
WHat I have tried
I have currently tried battery pull. Restore via power/volume down. I just tried to restart again for giggle. my bt headset did say phone 2 connected.
currently this is what the screen looks like,.
You can just text me with advice if it would be easier. thanks again.
Where you overclockign at all? GPU,CPU or OV~UV gpu failure could do that
No overclocking I know of. Heck I'd stock if I could get it back

I'm not sure exactly how this applies to HTC phones, but for Samsung phones, the 3-button boot into recovery usually clears these kinds of issues right up!
Once you get into recovery, we clear data, cache and dalvik cache, potentially restoring your phone back to stock condition. Yes, you lose all your stuff, but whatever was causing the malfunction is usually gone at that point. There's a possibility it could just be how your ROM was interacting with your lovely manufactured equipment (YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary, meaning not all phones are built the same so what works for some may not work for others due to the small differences in every manufactured part...)
Now as far as your screen goes, did you drop it or anything like that? Do you think this was physically damaged while in your pocket at all? Does it get pretty hot when in your pockets or was it hot this time when you pulled it out?
Not hot. It wont go into boot loader

I followed this. Several time. I changed batteries. changed sd card. and left the battery out for 30. Still not working.
1. Remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, then reinsert the battery.
2. Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
3. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button.
4. Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press the POWER button."
So the phone works.just had the alarm go off. If that's any help.

It was found out to be the screen. I had a friend mess with it and he said it just came back on. he made it stock again and it goes out Monday for warranty. I gotta pay for shipping but its alot cheaper than a new phone.
Interesting. Who manufactured the screen? There seem to be a lot of issues with the Sensations display, it would be cool if we could isolate it to one of the two manufacturers.
Might want to change your title to reflect "[SOLVED]" somewhere in it, also.
Sorry I couldn't help more, but hardware isn't my thing

When you say he messed with it, what exactly did he do?
I quoted wdhat he said. sorry for the vague wording. I believe he took the back off and suspended it upside down from teh back for an hour then restarted it 15 times and it came back on. after that he went put it all back together. From what he said if you press on certain parts of the screen it goes out. but then others if comes back. Similar to a teeter totter. as he put it. I am guessing a ribbon has come loose or something

Touchscreen stopped working after soft brick...

Ok..
I had this phone for a while and I started using it again recently. I have fully replaced the digitizer/lcd bezel before with no problems (been a phone repair tech for 10 years) And it has worked fine.
The other night I reverted it back to stock because it seems to be the only way to get a constant data signal. Worked fine. I then updated it to the newest OTA update without a problem.
I then rebooted it and it stuck on a black screen loop with the buttons going on and off for hours. I spent 7 hours trying to figure out what was wrong, flashing, re flashing.. Nothing. Finally I get CWM recovery installed and find out my SD card is fried. So I put a new one in, and transfer over the roms I want t flash. 3 different roms, all with no touch screen.
Revert back to stock, still no touch screen.
Could something have gone bad on the board to have caused this? Is there something system wise not getting wiped that may cause this? Its to much of a coincidence that the touch screen and buttons would go out after all this happened.
Any help would be appreciated. Im waiting on a new digitizer now to check because Ive already gone over all the connections. But if its something software wise, Id like to try that before doing another digitizer replacement.
Thanks
funny you made this thread. i just got my hands on a soft bricked g2x that was stuck on the blue lg logo. after a quick nvflash it boots right up......but with no touchscreen. not sure if it ever worked as im not the original owner.
but i'll be keeping my eyes out on this thread for sure!
Id give a pretty to see inside both of your phones. Sounds like a bad contact on the ribbons.or one of them may have been ripped during a screen installation. I've never heard of the screen just up and quoting working without some major stuff happening to the phone. My guess is these screens were replaced with the wrong screen.just a guess though.

I have done phone repairs for quite a few years, It wasnt a wrong screen and has worked fine for a year since its replacement. I have already opened the phone again and made sure all contacts were fine. What Im trying to figure out is if there is maybe some part of the system/boot that holds the touchscreen drivers and they have bee erased?
Again, I find its a huge coincidence that it worked fine up until this happened then as soon as its booting again, stops working... Which is why I think its a software issue.
Try touching the corners of the screen after booting up start with the top left and go clockwise. One of the roms used to mess up the connectivity between phone and screen. And that is supposed to reset the touch screen. A old g1 trick

Busted phone for a Dev if you want it

Alright guys, I had a conversation in Ax's "Run ROMs on different Carriers" thread, but I really want to get to the bottom of my issue, whether it be a hardware issue, ROM related, OR user related.
I've been having an issue with my phone the past few days. Started out it would read "invalid sim, need to reboot" or something along that. Anyways this was after flashing a nightly and I figured, OK, it's a nightly i'll live with it. Eventually my phone just started to power off/reboot all by itself; not real consistent but it was happening more than I would like. Today, the S*&% really hit the fan. I flashed a nightly Wednesday night(i'm not going to say which one, because i'm not sure if it was from the ROM itself or if this was a hardware issue). Anyways, Friday at about noon or so, I open a game to play on my lunch break, I get distracted so I lock my phone to attend to something else. I go back to my phone and it is powered off, now totally unresponsive to anything. I pull battery and try to restart, when I place the battery back in the phone it automatically reboots(WITHOUT ANY BUTTON PRESS) I thought to myself ok this is kind of weird. I try rebooting by using power+vol up...absolutely nothing, it's just a brick. Well, I pull the battery again, hold vol up thinking it will go into recovery...nope, it will boot for a sec or two, just enough to get the blue lettering on the top left of the screen then shuts off again. OK, let's put this b*&*h into download mode and see what happens. it goes into DL mode, all the way to the point of where it says " do not turn target off" then shuts down. I did both of these multiple times, with different batteries as well, plugged in and not. It won't stay on for a computer to recognize it. Someone suggested a stuck power button, I don't think so; it feels the same as it always has.
I was fortunate enough to be able to get another S4 with a busted screen so I switched out motherboards. I have a working phone again...which is all I was worried about. I've flashed quite a few ROMs, I follow procedure to the T when flashing... What do you guys think...hardware issue...user issue...ROM issue? I'm very curious to know because I don't want this happening again, obviously. I would even send the phone out to someone to play with(mind you, the screen doesn't work and the silver bezel is crappy because I just used my original one).
I would say stay away from whatever ROM you flashed. This could also be a hardware issue. I had my old note just randomly shut off on me and was unresponsive as well. Finally got it to boot and reset it. But in your case I would stay away from that ROM and maybe find something more stable. So as this is unknown to what happened I would not blame either. Sorry to hear about your bad experience.

Im saying nothing for sure, but a stuck power button feels just like normal. I had this issue on two separate samsung phones (they are known for this issue). I thought it was just bs, but i decided to tear it down and check. I used a q-tip and everclear and got plenty in there, wiggled and pressed the button for around five minutes. Re assembled, put the battery in and sure enough, the problem was gone. You cant always feel the button sticking. But hey, if you are offering the remains up, ill take em! I would gladly pay $200 for a replacement screen for it to test on.

Edit: Used some IPA on the power button this morning, soaked it pretty well, pressed the button many many times with varying pressure, with a hard pointy object etc. etc., jiggled side to side, tried every option I could to get it unstuck (if that's what it is) and still doing the exact same thing.
